Abstract

Background and Objectives: Here, non-thermal effects induced in the suspension of hollow alginate silver microcontainers after application of short electric field pulses (about 1 ms) of high intensity (about 1 kV/cm) were studied as a prospective tool for remote activation of microcontainers. Alterations in microcontaner’s shells were studied as a function of their composition. Magnetic nanoparticles immobilized within microcontainer’s shells were found to enhance effects that occurred after application of electric field pulses. Alterations found in microcontaner’s shells can be further employed for remote activation of microcontainers and release of encapsulated cargo. Results: The obtained results are the basis for further research of multifunctional microcontainers based on an organic alginate matrix and inorganic metal nanoparticles of silver and magnetite as drug carriers, the permeability, and structure of which can be switched using a non-thermal pulsed electrical action. Conclusion: The proposed microcontainers can be employed as carriers in new effective systems for encapsulation, targeted delivery, and controlled release of various substances in aqueous media responsive towards electric and magnetic fields which are promising in a wide range of biomedical tasks and other applications.

Abstract

Chapter 12 introduces a new economic framework to analyse power in the food value chain. Spurred on by the increased interest of policy makers and antitrust authorities over the last decade, academic scholarship has made progress in analysing the origins and consequences of different dimensions of power across the value chain: buyer power, bargaining power, economic dependence. This Chapter summarises the key concepts used to analyse and measure power in the food value chain and explores the different theories of harm that have been developed and occasionally tested in recent cases. Far from representing just a ‘mirror image’ of the exercise of seller power, the analysis of buyer power may at times require a different set of analytical tools and a more detailed, case-by-case understanding of its specific origins and effects. From then on, the authors move to suggesting a broader theoretical framework that would encompass all different dimensions of power in the value chain, under the rubric of vertical power. After defining the theoretical contours of the concept, the authors offer some metrics that enable an empirical verification of the existence and exercise of vertical power.

192. On -Cocycles over Irrational Rotations with Secondary Collisions.

Abstract

We consider a skew product over irrational rotation of a circle . It is supposed that the transformation which is a -map has the form , where is a rotation in through the angle and is a diagonal matrix. Assuming that with a sufficiently large constant and the function is such that possesses only simple zeroes, we study hyperbolic properties of the cocycle generated by . We apply the critical set method to show that, under some additional requirements on the derivative of the function , the secondary collisions compensate weakening of the hyperbolicity due to primary collisions and the cocycle generated by becomes uniformly hyperbolic in contrast to the case where secondary collisions can be partially eliminated.
