Abstract

Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have obtained promising results in image processing tasks including super-resolution (SR). However, most CNN-based SR methods treat low-resolution (LR) inputs and features equally across channels, rarely notice the loss of information flow caused by the activation function and fail to leverage the representation ability of CNNs. In this letter, we propose a novel single-image super-resolution (SISR) algorithm named Wider Channel Attention Network (WCAN) for remote sensing images. Firstly, the channel attention mechanism is used to adaptively recalibrate the importance of each channel at the middle of the wider attention block (WAB). Secondly, we propose the Local Memory Connection (LMC) to enhance the information flow. Finally, the features within each WAB are fused to take advantage of the network's representation capability and further improve information and gradient flow. Analytic experiments on a public remote sensing data set (UC Merced) show that our WCAN achieves better accuracy and visual improvements against most state-of-the-art methods., Comment: This work is proposed for remote sensing images, but the idea of the whole paper do not foucs on the characteristics of remote sensing images. Abstract

Regular latitude-longitude grids in global simulations encounter polar singularities in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. In contrast, unstructured meshes have the potential to overcome this issue; however, so far, the performance of unstructured meshes in polar areas is barely investigated. This study examined the efficacy of unstructured meshes over Antarctica using the integrated Atmospheric Model Across Scales (iAMAS, v1.0) with multi-source observations. Four mesh configurations of the iAMAS model were assessed, varying in resolutions (120 km, 60 km, 16 km, and 4 km) over the Antarctic region. The study evaluates the iAMAS simulation performance for both surface layer and upper meteorological fields (temperature, pressure, specific humidity, and wind speed), by comparing simulations against the fifth-generation ECMWF reanalysis (ERA5) data and measurements from automatic weather stations and radiosondes. The results indicate that the iAMAS model does not exhibit the polar singularity issue observed in ERA5, where the ERA5 with regular latitude-longitude grids significantly underestimates wind speeds at the polar grid center (i.e., the South Pole at 90° S). In the relatively flat region of East Antarctica, all four iAMAS experiments at various resolutions demonstrate comparable and even superior performance in simulating temperature and wind speed when compared to ERA5. In regions with complex terrain, such as near the Transantarctic Mountains, the iAMAS model (particularly at coarse grid resolutions like 120 km) exhibits a cold bias and stronger wind speeds, consistent with biases identified in other Antarctic simulations using regional models with latitude-longitude grids. Notably, mesh refinement at 4 km in complex terrains significantly enhance iAMAS's accuracy in simulating the meteorological fields for both the surface layer and upper atmosphere, suggesting that a grid resolution of 4 km (or even higher) is optimal in such regions. Conversely, in flatter areas, like the high East Antarctic plateau, increases in grid resolution yield minimal improvements in simulation accuracy, and a 60-km grid resolution appears sufficient. Abstract

Simulating accurately the South Asian summer monsoon is crucial for food security of several South Asian countries yet challenging for global climate models (GCMs). The GCMs suffer from some systematic biases including dry bias in mean monsoon rainfall over the India subcontinent and excessive equatorial light rain between which the relationship was rarely discussed. Numerical experiments are conducted for one month during active monsoon with global quasi-uniform resolution of 60 km (U60 km) and 3 km (U3 km) separately. Evaluation with observations shows that U3 km reduces the dry bias over northern India and excessive light rain over the equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) that are both prominent in U60 km. Excessive light rain in U60 km contributes critically to stronger rainfall and latent heating over the EIO. A Hadley-type anomalous circulation is thus induced, whose subsidence branch suppresses updrafts and reduces moisture transport into northern India, contributing to the dry bias. 187. Pure spin currents induced by asymmetric H-passivation in B3C2P3 nanoribbons.

Abstract

Inspired by the recently reported novel two-dimensional material B3C2P3, we performed one-dimensional shearing along the zigzag direction to obtain four B3C2P3 nanoribbons with various edge atom combinations. An asymmetric hydrogen passivation scheme was employed to modulate the electronic properties and successfully open the band gap, especially the 2H-1H passivation with dihydrogenation and monohydrogenation at the top and bottom edges, respectively, achieving bipolar magnetic semiconductors with edge P-atoms contributing to the main magnetism. Furthermore, three crucial spin-polarized transmission spectra yielded a significant spin-dependent Seebeck effect (SDSE), displaying superior thermoelectric conversion capabilities by generating pure spin currents. Our work shows that this asymmetric H-passivation effectively enables the enhancement of the spin caloritronic transport properties of the B3C2P3, which is of great significance for the exploitation of novel materials and their applications in spintronics. Abstract

As urbanization and economic growth advance, large-scale customers and real-time traffic conditions have become crucial factors in urban route planning. Deep reinforcement learning is considered the most effective method for solving urban route planning problems involving large-scale customers and real-time traffic conditions. Due to memory usage limitations, existing deep reinforcement learning methods cannot identify candidate customers or determine optimal travel routes in large-scale and real-time environments. To tackle these problems, this study introduces a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning method utilizing an improved transformer model (HDRLITF) based on the divide-and-conquer concept. Graph attention networks and gate mechanisms are integrated into the transformer model to capture dynamic features and improve the model's performance. A two-stage training method, based on the actor-critic algorithm, is proposed to determine the optimal policy function. To evaluate the HDRLITF method, experiments were conducted using datasets from the cities of Shenzhen and Chengdu in China. The experimental results suggest that the HDRLITF method can effectively interact with real-time traffic environments and obtain high-quality solutions compared to other deep reinforcement learning methods. 189. Coexistence of polar distortion and metallicity in PbTi1-xNbxO3

Abstract

Ferroelectricity has been believed unable to coexist with metallicity since the free carriers can screen the internal coulomb interactions of dipoles. Very recently, one kind of materials called as ferroelectric metal was reexamined. Here, we report the coexistence of metallicity and polar distortion in a new candidate for ferroelectric metal PbTi1-xNbxO3 via doping engineering. The ferroelectric-like polar distortion in all the doped PbTi1-xNbxO3, with x ranging from 0.04 to 0.12, was confirmed by the piezoresponse force microscopy and the scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements. PbTi1-xNbxO3 films become more conductive with more doping density, and emerge a metallic behavior when x reaches 0.12. Our first principle calculations further revealed that the doped Nb ions in the films can only provide free electrons, but not be able to damage the dipoles in unite cells even with the heaviest doping density of 0.12 due to their little impact on the off-centering of the Ti ions. We believe that these results confirm a feasibility of realizing the coexistence of metallicity and polar distortion for other ferroelectrics in a common way, and motivate the synthesis of some new materials with artificially designed properties even incompatible in nature.

Abstract

Purpose: This study compared the timing effects of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICIs) administration on the efficacy and safety of concurrent chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer. Methods: This study included patients with advanced cervical cancer who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy with ICIs. The patients were divided into early-application (n=51) and late-application groups (n=56) according to the ICI application timing. The primary objective was assessing progression-free survival (PFS) and its associated factors; secondary objectives included assessing objective remission rates (ORR) and treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs). Results: Before propensity score matching (PSM), the median PFS (mPFS) times were significantly different: 11.5 months (95% CI: 11.0–13.2) and 7.5 months (95% CI: 6.5–9.0) for the early and late groups, respectively (P<0.001). After PSM, the mPFS times remained significantly different: 11.5 months (95% CI: 11.0–13.8) and 6.5 months (95% CI: 6.1–9.0), respectively (P<0.001). The PSM tumor-response ORR in the early combination group (74.3%) was significantly greater than the 31.4% in the late combination group (P<0.001). After PSM, multivariate Cox analysis showed tumor diameter (P=0.004), distant organ metastasis (P=0.047), and timing of combination therapy (P<0.001) were independently associated factors affecting PFS. The most common TRAEs in the two groups of patients were neutropenia, nausea and vomiting, and fatigue, with no significant difference in incidence (P>0.050).All adverse reactions were resolved, and no adverse reaction-related deaths occurred. Conclusion: In patients with cervical cancer treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, earlier immunotherapy improves survival and is equivalent in safety to ICIs late application.
