시설물의 운영 및 유지관리는 시설물의 전 생애주기 비용의 83% 이상을 차지하기 때문에 시설물의 효과적인 관리는 필수적으로 이루어져야 한다. 본 연구에서는 시설물의 운영 및 유지관리 단계에서 요구되는 정보를 설계 및 시공단계에서부터 관리하기 위해 BIM 객체 기반의 분류목록을 개발하였다. 이 분류목록을 개발하기 위해 건설정보분류체계, 건축전기설비설계기준, 조달청 물품목록분류를 분석하였으며, 객체분류목록을 구성하기 위한 문제점을 도출하였다. 그리고 각 기준을 비교 분석하여 KSF 1540:2010 (CAD도면 작성 원칙과 기준)의 '도면의 분야 코드'를 분야분류인 대분류로 구성하고, 건설정보 분 류체계의 부위분류를 중분류로 구성하였으며, 조달청 물품목록 분류를 소분류인 장비 및 장치분류로 분류하고 해당 코드를 부여하였다. 본 연구는 설계단계 객체관점의 분류를 제공함으로써 운영 및 유지관리단계 정보교환 및 공유에 유용할 것이다. 나아가 운영 및 유지관리단계 기능별, 공간별, 용도별 장치 및 장비관리를 가능하게 함으로써 시설물의 효과적인 운영 및 유지관리를 가능하게 할 것으로 판단된다. 【It is essential to effectively manage facilities because operating and maintenance cost for them accounts for more than 83% of lifecycle cost. This study is expected to be useful to exchange and share information in operating and maintenance phase by offering object point of view classification in design and construction phase. besides, it is looking forward to effective operating and maintenance of facilities by enabling management of devices and equipments by function, space, use.】

In this study, we investigated the effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and red or blue light-emitting diode (LED) light on embryo swelling and germination of Oreorchis patens (Lindl.) Lindl. A method for determining the swelling and protocorm formation in O. patens seeds through in vitro examination of immature seeds was established. NaOCl treatment of immature seeds was found to significantly enhance the extent of embryo swelling and protocorm formation in immature zygote embryos compared to those in the untreated controls. Additionally, the effects of white fluorescent light, and red and blue LED lights on embryo swelling and protocorm formation in in vitro cultured seeds were examined and compared to the conditions with or without NaOCl treatment. The most suitable light for embryo swelling and protocorm formation was the red LED light. Keywords Germination, Medium, Orchid, Oreorchis patens Introduction Oreorchis patens (Lindl.) It commonly grows in temperate deciduous forest margins, thickets, grassy places, shaded places, and along valleys in the main ranges of Baek-du-dae-gan (Lee and Choi 2006). This plant produces scapes (30-50 cm tall) from May to July, each bearing 20-35 whitish-yellow flowers (7-15 mm long; 1.5-3 mm diameter) (Lee 2006).

Lychnis wilfordii (Regel) Maxim is a rare and valued ornamental plant. Germination rate reached 46.6% when seeds were treated with 100 mg‧l -1 GA (Gibberellic acid) 3 . The highest callus induction was observed in the leaf explants of the seedlings on MS medium containing specific concentrations of 0.5 mg ‧l -1 BA (N 6 -benzyladenine) and 3.0 mg‧l -1 NAA (a-naphthalene acetic acid). The adventitious shoot was formed in 97.3% of calli on 1/2 WPM (Woody Plant Medium) medium. Shoot elongation of in vitro propagated plantlets was no difference among various medium. The plantlets grew well after transferring to the pot. This in vitro propagation protocol should be useful for conservation of this endangered plant. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in various stages of tumor progression. miR-494, which we had previously identified as a miRNA induced by ionizing radiation (IR) in the glioma cell line U-251, was observed to enhance invasion of U-251 cells by activating MMP-2. The miR-494-induced invasive potential was accompanied by, and dependent on, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) upregulation and the activation of its downstream signaling constituents, Akt and ERK. The upregulation of EGFR by miR-494 involved the suppression of lysosomal protein turnover. Among the putative target proteins tested, p190B RhoGAP (p190B) was downregulated by miR-494, and its reduced expression was responsible for the increase in EGFR expression. A reporter assay using a luciferase construct containing p190B 3′-untranslated region (3′UTR) confirmed that p190B is a direct target of miR-494. Downregulation of p190B by small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection closely mimicked the outcomes of miR-494 transfection, and showed increased EGFR expression, MMP-2 secretion, and invasion. Ectopic expression of p190B suppressed the miR-494-induced EGFR upregulation and invasion promotion, thereby suggesting that p190B depletion is critical for the invasion-promoting action of miR-494. Collectively, our results suggest a novel function for miR-494 and its potential application as a target to control invasiveness in cancer therapy.

B ackground The advent of new agents has contributed to the prolonged survival of multiple myeloma (MM) patients. From the Durie-Salmon staging system, international staging system (ISS) and recently, revised ISS (R-ISS) have been developed to better prognosticate the survival of MM. R-ISS includes chromosomal abnormalities (CA) detected by interphase fluorescent in situ hybridization (iFISH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in addition to the ISS. However, the R-ISS has still some limitations in the real clinical settings, as it has enrolled patients exclusively on clinical trials which includes more young patients (age < 65 years old), contains non-standardized iFISH results and has short median follow-up duration. The first-line drugs used in the patients could also affect the prognosis. Therefore, a more detailed and standardized but also convenient prognostic system is needed with clinical findings commonly observed in MM patients treated with new agents in the real clinical world. Patient and Method Adult patients who were confirmed multiple myeloma between January, 2011 to December, 2017 and patients who had received thalidomide and/or bortezomib or lenalidomide-based chemotherapy as a first-line treatment were included for the analysis. A total of 861 patients from 13 centers participating Korean multiple myeloma working party were analyzed. Baseline serum albumin, serum ß2-microglobulin, cytogenetics by iFISH, LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), ALC (absolute lymphocyte count), CRP (C-reactive protein) and ferritin were measured within 4 weeks before beginning the first line of chemotherapy. Each factors of age ≥ 65 years, serum ß2-microglobulin ≥ 5.5 mg/L, LDH > normal, cytogenetic high risk by FISH (del17p, t(4;14), t(14;16)), ALC < 1500/mm3, CRP ≥ 1.5 mg/dL, and ferritin ≥ 500 ng/mL were defined as abnormal findings, which were given 1 point (Table 1) and the sum of points were used to discriminate inflammatory factor-based staging system (IFBSS). IFBSS were defined as follows: Stage I (point 0), stage II (point 2-3), stage III (point 4-5), and stage IV (point 5-7). Overall survival (OS) was defined by the date of MM diagnosis to the date of death by any cause or follow-up loss. Results Baseline characteristics of the patients were as listed in Table 2. With a median follow-up duration of 22.70 months (range, 0.20-86.80 months), age ≥ 65 years, serum ß2-microglobulin ≥ 5.5 mg/L, LDH > normal, cytogenetic high risk by FISH (del17p, t(4;14), t(14;16)), ALC < 1500/mm3, CRP ≥ 1.5 mg/dL, and ferritin ≥ 500 ng/mL showed significant higher OS by univariate and multivariate analysis. Albumin < 3.5 mg/dL were excluded into the staging system due the unpredictability to OS in univariate analysis (Table 3). Study groups of inflammatory factor-based scoring system comprised of 61 patients in stage I, 395 patients in stage II, 189 patients in stage III and 36 patients in stage IV. The median OS were not reached in stage I and II, stage III and IV showed a median OS of 36.57 months (95%CI, 33.96-.39.18) and 17.60 months (95%CI, 9.16-.26.04). The OS according to the IFBSS showed significant differences (P < 0.001), which predicted OS better compared with conventional ISS and R-ISS (Table 4). Conclusion In the new agent era, inflammatory factors incorporated into the staging system can better discriminate prognosis of multiple myeloma patients compared to the ISS or R-ISS. Validation of this finding in a larger cohort is needed to expand usage of this new staging system. In this study, electroless-plating of a nickel-phosphor (Ni&ndash, P) thin film on surface-controlled thermoelectric elements was developed to significantly increase the bonding strength between Bi&ndash, Te materials and copper (Cu) electrodes in thermoelectric modules. Without electroless Ni&ndash, P plating, the effect of surface roughness on the bonding strength was negligible. Brittle SnTe intermetallic compounds were formed at the bonding interface of the thermoelectric elements and defects such as pores were generated at the bonding interface owing to poor wettability with the solder. However, defects were not present at the bonding interface of the specimen subjected to electroless Ni&ndash, P plating, and the electroless Ni&ndash, P plating layer acted as a diffusion barrier toward Sn and Te. The bonding strength was higher when the specimen was subjected to Ni&ndash, P plating compared with that without Ni&ndash, P plating, and it improved with increasing surface roughness. As electroless Ni&ndash, P plating improved the wettability with molten solder, the increase in bonding strength was attributed to the formation of a thicker solder reaction layer below the bonding interface owing to an increase in the bonding interface with the solder at higher surface roughness.

UNLABELLED The National Agricultural Biotechnology Information Center (NABIC) constructed a web-based molecular marker database to provide information about 7,847 sequence-tagged site (STS) markers identified in the 11 species using a next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. The database consists of three major functional categories: keyword search, detailed viewer and download function. The molecular marker annotation table provides detailed information such as ownership information, basic information, and STS-related characterization information. This experiment was conducted to establish the in vitro propagation of Dendrobium moniliforme through protocorm like body (PLB) induction from the culture of leaf, stem and root explants. Frequency of PLB formation from root explants was higher than those of leaf and stem explants. PLB’s proliferation in MS medium including 1.0 mg/L NAA was better than 1.0 mg/L IBA. Frequency of PLB’s proliferation on medium with various concentrations of BA, Kinetin, Tidiazuron (0. 1.0, 3.0 mg/L) and NAA (0, 1.0 mg/L) was tested. The maximun proliferation of PLB’s was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 3.0 mg/L BA and 1.0 mg/L NAA after 6 weeks of culture. Halophytes are plants of saline habitats that grow under conditions that may vary in extremes of temperatures (freezing to very hot), water availability (drought to water logging) and salinity (mild to almost saturation). Halophytes may also face sudden micro-environmental variations within their habitats. In this study, we examine some of the factors that determine the ability of seeds of Artemisia fukudo to germinate when conditions are optimal for seedling growth and survival. Germination percentage was the highest at 77.5% when treated in 0% seawater and seedling growth was best in 0% seawater plug cell tray. Physiological quality (chlorophyll contents) and mean germination time were best in the condition in which seeds were treated with 0% seawater (control). Germination performance index in the control group showed the highest value to 3.8. Seedling growth, seedling vigor index in the length of seedling growth andthe relative growth rate were the highest values of 0.76 cm, 1.43, 0.0099, respectively.Key Words: Artemisia fukudo, Chlorophyll, germination, seawater

We already had reported that Bcl-w promotes invasion or migration in gastric cancer cells and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) by activating matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) via specificity protein 1 (Sp1) or β-cateinin, respectively. High expression of Bcl-w also has been reported in GBM which is the most common malignant brain tumor and exhibits aggressive and invasive behavior. These reports propose that Bcl-w-induced signaling is strongly associated with aggressive characteristic of GBM. We demonstrated that Sp1 protein or mRNA expression is induced by Bcl-w using Western blotting or RT-PCR, respectively, and markedly elevated in high-grade glioma specimens compared with low-grade glioma tissues using tissue array. However, relationship between Bcl-w-related signaling and aggressive characteristic of GBM is poorly characterized. This study suggested that Bcl-w-induced Sp1 activation promoted expression of glioma stem-like cell markers, such as Musashi, Nanog, Oct4 and sox-2, as well as neurosphere formation and invasiveness, using western blotting, neurosphere formation assay, or invasion assay, culminating in their aggressive behavior. Therefore, Bcl-w-induced Sp1 activation is proposed as a putative marker for aggressiveness of GBM.

We previously assessed continuous infusion (CI) of fludarabine and cytarabine plus idarubicin (CI-FLAG1) for patients under 65 years of age with resistant acute myeloid leukemia. Induction chemotherapy consisted of idarubicin (IDA) plus fludarabine and cytarabine (ARAC) as a 24-hour CI. In response to induction, 31.6% of patients achieved complete remission (CR) and in 68.4% the treatment failed. We concluded that CI-FLAG1 carried a high risk of toxicity and reduced CI-FLAG doses were recommended. Therefore, we revised the protocol (CI-FLAG2) by reducing the dose of IDA and ARAC. In total, 38 and 68 patients were enrolled into CI-FLAG1 and CI-FLAG2, respectively. When comparing outcomes between CI-FLAG1 and CI-FLAG2, there were no differences in terms of the CR rate (p = 0.306) and the overall response rate (ORR; p = 0.206). The treatment failure patterns were different between CI-FLAG1 and CI-FLAG2. The median overall survival showed only a trend towards longer survival in CI-FLAG2 (p = 0.074). Among intermediate-risk patients, there were high response rates favoring CI-FLAG2 in terms of the CR rate (p = 0.108), the ORR (p = 0.031), and overall survival (p = 0.033). This represented a relatively improved response rate compared to our previous study. There was decreased aplasia with dose reductions at the expense of increased resistance. A reduced dose of CI-FLAG might be most beneficial for intermediate-risk groups.

Ninety-nine Escherichia coli and 33 Salmonella isolates were assessed for antimicrobial susceptibility (disc diffusion test). Sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance genes were identified through PCR, and class 1 and class 2 integrons with resistance gene cassettes were identified with PCR followed by sequencing. Salmonella (63.6%) and E. coli (85.8%) isolates were multidrug resistant (resistance to 3 or more antimicrobials), and the highest incidences of resistance were observed for tetracycline, nalidixic acid, and sulfamethoxazole. The sul1, sul2, tetA, and tetB resistance determinant genes were predominant in E. coli, whereas only sul2 and tetA were identified in Salmonella isolates. In the E. coli isolates, 54 (54.5%) class 1 integrons, 6 (6.1%) class 2 integrons, and 5 (5.1%) class 1 and class 2 integrons together were detected, whereas only 3 (9.1%) integrons were found in the Salmonella serovars. Around 87% of the integrons in E. coli harbored resistance gene cassettes conferring resistance to streptomycin/spectinomycin (aadA, aminoglycoside resistance gene), trimethoprim (dfrA, dihydrofolate reductase gene), streptothricin [sat1 and sat2 (streptothricin acetyltransferase), and estX (putative esterases)]. The most common gene cassettes were aadA1+dfrA1 and dfrA1+sat2+aadA1 in class 1 and class 2 integrons, respectively. Other cassettes including aadA5+dfrA7, dfrA12+aadA2, aadA2+aadA1+dfrA12, and aadA5+aadA2/dfrA7 were also identified. Among the Salmonella serovars, Salmonella Malmoe harbored aadA1+dfrA1 and dfrA12+sat2+aadA1 genes. The aadA1, aadA2, sat2, and dfrA1 had wide variation in similarity among themselves and from previously reported genes worldwide. The diverse gene cassettes could be responsible for the prominent resistance profiles observed and a potential source for dissemination of antimicrobial resistance determinants to other bacteria.

Iris odaesanensis Y. N. Lee. is an important endangered and native plant belonging to the family Iridaceae in Korea. This study describes a method for rapid micropropagation of this species via from leaf, rhizome and root explants derived calli. Leaf, rhizome and root explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) for callus induction. Rhizome explants yielded calli at a frequency of 72% when cultured at 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D. Calli were maintained at 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D. These calli were transferred to MS medium supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/l 2,4-D in combination with 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/l BA for adventitious shoot induction. The highest number of adventitious shoot (228.9 per petri-dish) were formed at 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D and 1.0 mg/l BA. WPM medium was the best to convert calli into plantlets, where up to 98.2% of calli were regenerated into plantlets. This in vitro propagation protocol should be useful for conservation of this endangered plant.

Traditionally, Codonopsis lanceolata root have been used as a source of natural heath food. This study was initiated to investigate the impacts of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA) on adventitious growth C. lanceolata , the production of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, total phenolic compound, antioxidative activity (DPPH). The highest phenolics content was observed in treatment of 20 uM MeJA (74.53 mg/g). The content of total flavonoids followed the similar pattern as that of total phenolics, showing 38.45 mg/g of C. lanceolata treated by 20 uM MeJA. The DPPH scavenging activity was 24.2 (IC 50 ) of C. lanceolata treated by 20 uM MeJA. These results provide useful information for enhancing biological properties of cultural roots of C. lanceolata. Purpose We investigated the clinical outcome of bone marrow (BM) involvement in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who received rituximab-based therapy. Materials and Methods A total of 567 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed DLBCL treated with rituximab-CHOP (RCHOP) between November 2001 and March 2010 were included in the current study. All of the patients underwent a BM study at the initial staging and the clinical characteristics and prognosis of these patients with or without BM involvement were analyzed retrospectively. Results The total cohort included 567 patients. The overall incidence of BM involvement was 8.5%. The aim of this study was to establish plant regeneration from leaf explants of Sedum tosaense Makino, which is globally rare and endangered species. The leaf explants of S. tosaense were cultured on the MS medium supplemented with different concentration of BA and NAA for callus induction. Callus induction was showed the highest (100%) on MS medium containing 2.0 mg ․L -1 BA and 1.0 mg․L -1 NAA. The highest number of shoots were regenerated when callus were cultured on MS medium containing 2.0 mg․L -1 BA and 1.0 mg ․L -1 NAA for 5 weeks. The ax illary bud were cultured on the MS media supplemented with com- bination of BA and NAA for in vitro propagation. The highest number of adventitious shoot (7.9 per explants) formed at 1.0 mg․L -1 NAA and 2.0 mg․L -1 BA. Lilium cernum Komarvo. is an important endangered plant belonging to the family Liliaceae. A method was developed for the rapid micropropagation of L. cernum through plant regeneration from bulb scales explant-derived calli. The bulb scales segments were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mg·L -1 kinetin and 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg·L -1 NAA or 2,4-D for callus induction. In media with 0.5∼3.0 mg·L -1 kinetin and 0.1∼1.0 mg·L -1 NAA and 2,4-D, 95∼100% of explants produced callus. They were then transferred to MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of NAA (0, 0.01, 0.05 and 1.0 mg·L -1 ) in combination with BA (0, 1.0 and 2.0 mg·L -1 ) for bulbet formation. Bulbet induction (78%), weight (468 mg) and size (15.5 mm) were obtained the highest on MS medium containing 2.0 mg·L -1 BA and 1.0 m g·L -1 NAA. The habitats characteristics of Rhododendron micranthum Turcz. were investigated to compile basic data for conservation and restoration. Natural habitats were located at altitudes of 100-500 m with inclinations of 10-35 o . Rhododendron micranthum population was classified into Pinus densiflora dominant population. In the study sites, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphate, exchangeable potassium, exchangeable sodium, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium, cation exchange capacity and soil pH were 4.10-8.64%, 0.18-0.46%, 8.69-26.70 mgkg -1 , 0.10-0.23 cmol + kg -1 , 0.06-0.10 cmol + kg -1 , 0.85-4.10 cmol + kg -1 , 0.24-0.64 cmol + kg -1 , 12.76-20.90 cmol + kg -1 , 4.34-5.15. Rooting rate is too low, cutting propagation, breeding methods are not good. Also, this study was investigated seed germination of R. micranthum depends on soaking treatment. Oreorchis coreana Finet is threatened globally by over-collection from its natural habitats for horticultural purposes. Its rarity in nature makes this plant one of the most endangered species in Korea. In this study, we investigated the effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on orchid seed viability and seed germination. An in vitro bioassay swelling test using immature seeds was compared with a standard chemical procedure using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) to test seed viability. In general, the bioassay was more appropriate for estimating embryo viability after a prolonged pre-treatment (more than 1 h) in 1% NaOCl, a surface sterilant often used to enhance germination of seeds of terrestrial plants. Therefore, an efficient method for investigating in vitro swelling of immature seeds is urgently needed. We established a method for determining the viability and swelling of O. coreana seeds via in vitro examination of immature seeds. Treatment of immature seeds with 1% NaOCl for 10 min greatly enhanced the extent of swelling of immature zygote embryos when compared to untreated seeds. These data obtained here appear to be comparable to viability and swelling that occurs in O. coreana seeds via asymbiotic germination.

The clinical outcomes of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) have improved greatly, but treatment failure still occurs. Identification of patients with poor prognosis is fundamental, and we propose a new clinical prognostic system (CBC-score) consisting of WBC, platelet count, and hemoglobin level. Poultry products have consistently been identified as important sources of Salmonella infection in humans, because vertical transfer of infection from breeding hens to progeny is an important aspect of the epidemiology of Salmonella spp. infection within the poultry industry. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella contamination in poultry products from 15 different located geographical areas from among the 50 poultry slaughterhouses authorized to operate in Korea and to characterize all the isolates by genotyping, phage typing and antibiotic resistance pattern. Salmonella was isolated from 10 (66.7%) of the first and 5 (33.3%) of the last chilling waters and from 32 (42.7%) carcasses originating from 9 slaughterhouses. The major prevalent serotypes of Salmonella originating from 2 duck slaughterhouses and 13 chicken slaughterhouses tested were S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis, respectively. Regarding the characteristics of their antibiotic resistance, 8 of the 11 ampicillin resistant (AmR) isolates carried blaTEM only, two carried blaTEM and blaCTX-M-14 and one carried blaCTX-M-3 and only one AmR isolate with the blaCTX-M-3 β-lactamase gene was an ESBL-producing Salmonella strain. Twenty-seven Salmonella isolates showed nalidixic acid resistance with a mutation at amino acid codon Asp87 in gyrA and no mutation in the parC gene. In all the phenotypic and genotypic properties of the 18 S. Enteritidis and 8 S. Typhimurium based on PFGE, phage types and antibiotic resistance pattern, the predominant patterns were XEI/BEI-PT32a-NaR (n = 5) and XTI/BTI-RNDC-no resistant antibiotics (n = 6), respectively.

This multicenter phase II clinical trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of weekly Genexol-PM® and gemcitabine combination chemotherapy in patients with unresectable or metastatic biliary tract cancer. Patients and methods Patients received 100 mg/m2 Genexol-PM® and 1,000 mg/m2 gemcitabine intravenously on days 1 and 8 every 21 days. Results Out of 39 patients, there were 10 partial responses (25.6%) and 18 with stable diseases (46.2%) were confirmed with median response duration 4.1 months. The median progression-free survival was 5.9±1.6 months and overall survival 11.9±1.4 months. The median number of cycles administered was 4.0 (range=1-10). Grade 3 or more neutropenia occurred in 12 patients (26.7%). The most common grade 3/4 non-hematological toxicities were febrile neutropenia (13.4%) and elevation of liver enzymes (6.7%). Conclusion Weekly Genexol-PM® combined with gemcitabine demonstrated sufficient antitumor activity to warrant further development when used as first-line chemotherapy for advanced biliary tract cancer.

(1) Background: Application of nanotechnology or nanomaterials in agricultural food crops has attracted increasing attention with regard to improving crop production, quality, and nutrient utilization. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have been reported to enhance seed yield, germination rate, and anti-oxidant potential in food crops, raising concerns about their toxicity potential. In this study, we evaluated the oral toxicity of red ginseng exposed to colloidal Au-NPs during cultivation (G-red ginseng) in rats and their intestinal transport mechanism. (2) Methods: 14-day repeated oral administration of G-red ginseng extract to rats was performed, and body weight, hematological, serum biochemical, and histopathological values were analyzed. An in vitro model of human intestinal follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) and an intestinal epithelial monolayer system were used for intestinal transport mechanistic study. (3) Results: No remarkable oral toxicity of G-red ginseng extract in rats was found, and Au-NPs did not accumulate in any organ, although Au-NP transfer to G-red ginseng and some increased saponin levels were confirmed. Au-NPs were transcytozed by microfold (M) cells, but not by a paracellular pathway in the intestinal epithelium. (4) Conclusion: These findings suggest great potential of Au-NPs for agricultural food crops at safe levels. Further study is required to elucidate the functional effects of Au-NPs on ginseng and long-term toxicity.

Central nervous system involvement remains a challenging issue in the treatment of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. We conducted a prospective cohort study with newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients receiving rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone to identify incidence and risk factors for central nervous system involvement. Among 595 patients, 279 patients received pre-treatment central nervous system evaluation, and 14 patients had central nervous system involvement at diagnosis (2.3% out of entire patients and 5.0% out of the 279 patients). For those patients, median follow-up duration was 38.2 months and some of them achieved long-term survival. Out of 581 patients who did not have central nervous system involvement at diagnosis, 26 patients underwent secondary central nervous system relapse with a median follow-up of 35 months, and the median time to central nervous system involvement was 10.4 months (range: 3.4-29.2). Serum lactate dehydrogenase > ×3 upper limit of normal range, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≥ 2, and involvement of sinonasal tract or testis, were independent risk factors for central nervous system relapse in multivariate analysis. Our study suggests that enhanced stratification of serum lactate dehydrogenase according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network-International Prognostic Index may contribute to better prediction for central nervous system relapse in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. An MR-compatible biopsy needle stylet is instrumented with optical fibers that provide information about contact conditions between the needle tip and organs or hard tissues such as bone or tumors. This information is rendered via a haptic display that uses ultrasonic motors to convey directional cues to users. Lateral haptic cues at the fingertips improve the targeting accuracy and success rate in penetrating a prostate phantom. Although the original intent was for haptic cues to match the direction of contact forces and needle bending, more consistent results were obtained by using the cues as steering guidance (opposite to contact forces); accordingly this convention was adopted for the user experiments reported.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of various type of Magma seawater (MSW) con- centrations on plant growth and useful mineral contents in Bletilla striata. In the RO (Reverse Osmosis) and ED (Electronic Distal) treatment, hardness of medium was poored in 3.0 g/L gelrite but increased in 8.0 g/L plant agar, 38,000 and 2,000 g/cm 2 respectably. We analyzed the morphological and physiological characteristics differences of B. striata treated various MSW. Survival frequency of plant and growth (shoot length, shoot diameter, root length, root diameter, shoot/root ratio) were significantly increased in RO and ED treatment at 50% and 10%, especially. Chlorophyll contents in ED treatments were higher than those in control and RO treatment. The content of strontium (Sr) in 20, 50, 75, 100% ED treatment, were higher than those in the control and RO, ED 1, 5, 10% treatment. These results showed that treatment of ED with the range of 20 ~ 100% could be used to supply the strontium enriched orchid plant. It is considered that MSW may be applied for use in Magma seawater to promotion of growth and produced functional plant.

There has been controversy surrounding Waldeyer’s ring (WR), especially focused on the question of whether it should be regarded as a nodal or an extranodal site. We conducted retrospective analyses of marginal zone B cell lymphomas involving WR (WR-MZLs) to observe their clinical features and prognosis, with specific regard to the nodal-or-extranodal question. A total of 52 patients with histological diagnosis of WR-MZL were retrospectively analyzed. The most common involvement site was the tonsil (40.4 %). Ann Arbor stage III/VI disease was present in 48.1 % (25 of 52). The response rate of the 27 stage I/II patients was 88.9 %, with 21 complete remissions and three partial remissions. The median time to progression (TTP) was 3.7 years (95 % CI 2.5–4.9 years). The estimated 5-year TTP and overall survival rates were 39.4 and 90.5 %, respectively. An optimization in vitro seed germination was established by using triphenol tetrazolium chloride (TTC) test, which has been known as two rare orchids ( Gastrodia verrucosa Blume and Hetaeria sikokiana Tuyama) in Jeju island. We have established proper NaOCl treatment for in vitro germination of G. verrucosa and H. sikokiana through TTC test. In the case of H. sikokiana, seed viability through TTC test was high with 95% in control. However, NaOCl 1% treatment for 30 minutes showed the highest embryo swelling rate to seed viability. Likewise, swelling formation of embryos, diameter of embryos, protocorm formation and diameter of protocorms of G. verrucosa was 87%, 59 μm, 91% and 138 μm through NaOCl 1% treatment for 30 minutes. This result will be applied on the basic information for improving in vitro seed germination rate of G. verrucosa and H. sikokiana. Iris dichotoma Pall. is an important endangered plant belonging to the family Iridaceae. A method was developed for the rapid micropropagation of I. dichotoma through plant regeneration from leaf, rhizome, and root explant-derived calli. Leaf, rhizome, and root segments were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supple- mented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D; 0-3.0 mg·L -1 ) for callus induction. Callus production was highest at 1.0 mg·L -1 2,4-D, where 73.8% and 45.5% of cultured rhizome and root cuttings, respectively, produced calli. The viable calli were maintained at an induced concentration of 2,4-D (3.0 mg·L -1 ). They were then transferred to MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of 2,4-D (0-3.0 mg·L -1 ) in combination with 6-benzyladenine (BA: 0, 1.0 and 3.0 mg·L -1 ) for adventitious shoot regeneration. The addition of a low concentration of 2,4-D into BA-containing medium significantly increased the frequency of shoot regeneration in leaf, rhizome, and root-derived calli. The highest number of adventitious shoots (26.4 per callus) formed at 0.5 mg·L -1 2,4-D and 1.0 mg/l BA. For rooting of the shoots, half- strength MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of indole 3-butyric acid (IBA) 0-3.0 mg·L -1 was tested. The optimal results were observed using half-strength MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg·L -1 IBA, on which 98% of the regenerated shoots developed roots with an average of 3.5 roots per shoot within 45 days. The plantlets raised in vitro were acclimatized and transferred to soil with 95% success. This in vitro propagation protocol will be useful for conservation and mass propagation of this endangered plant.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of OROS® hydromorphone in reducing breakthrough pain (BTP) medication frequency in Korean patients with chronic cancer pain. Settings and Design: Multicenter, prospective, open-label, phase IV study. Participants: Patients with chronic malignant pain using immediate-release oxycodone more than two times per day for BTP. Interventions: Patients were stabilized on their ongoing drug for 3 days immediately before baseline measurements (day 0). Medication was changed to OROS® hydromorphone at a dose equianalgesic to oxycodone using a 2.5:1 controlledrelease oxycodone to hydromorphone hydrochloride conversion ratio; the patients were observed for 7 days. Dose was titrated, if required, and the patients were observed for another 7 days. Effectiveness and safety parameters were measured at baseline, day 7, and day 14. Main Outcomes: BTP medication frequency on days 7 and 14, compared to baseline. Results: Of the 141 patients screened, 114 received study drug and 98 completed the study. Compared to day 0, daily BTP medication frequency on day 14 decreased from 2.93 to 2.00 (p < 0.0001), daily BTP frequency decreased from 3.67 to 2.44 (p < 0.0001), and end-of-dose pain frequency decreased by 44 percent. Pain was controlled adequately during daytime and night-time. Pain intensity decreased by 11 percent as assessed using the Korean Brief Pain Inventory and by 17 percent as assessed using the numerical rating scale. About 61.2 percent patients and 60.2 percent physicians were satisfied with the treatment. Common adverse events, which occurred in 91.2 percent patients, were constipation, somnolence, and dizziness. Conclusion: Once-daily OROS® hydromorphone is efficient in the reduction of cancer pain-related BTP episodes, including end-of-dose pain.

An efficient in vitro propagation was established by using axillary bud explants of roseroot (Rhodiola rosea L.), which has been known as a medicinal plant in East Asia. Among various media tested, MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA and 1.0 mg/L GA3 was found to be the best for multiple shoot formation (15 axillary shoots per axillary bud). In addition 1/2MS medium containing 50 g/L sucrose was best for shoot elongation (7.8 cm) and increasing total chlorophyll contents (8.64 mg/g) best. Maximum number of roots (17.7 roots per explant) was observed on the medium without plant growth regulators. Propagated plants were successfully acclimatized to ex vitro conditions, with a sur- vival frequency of 97% after 12 weeks. Most rooted shoots grew well and produced viable seeds when grown in vitro culture conditions. Therefore, R. rosea can be effectively propagated in vitro by the system we developed in this study.

We conducted a phase 3 randomized trial comparing 2 different doses of daunorubicin as induction chemotherapy in young adults (60 years of age or younger) with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Of 383 patients who were analyzed, 189 received standard-dose daunorubicin (SD-DN, 45 mg/m2 per day times 3 days) and 194 received high-dose daunorubicin (HD-DN, 90 mg/m2 per day times 3 days) in addition to cytarabine (200 mg/m2 per day times 7 days) to induce complete remission (CR). The CR rates were 72.0% in the SD-DN arm and 82.5% in the HD-DN arm (P = .014). At a median follow-up of 52.6 months, overall (OS) and event-free (EFS) survival were higher in the HD-DN arm than in the SD-DN arm (OS, 46.8% vs 34.6%, P = .030; EFS, 40.8% vs 28.4%, P = .030). Differences in CR rate and both OS and EFS remained significant after adjusting for other variables (CR, hazard ratio [HR], 1.802, P = .024; OS, HR, 0.739, P = .032; EFS, HR, 0.774, P = .048). The survival benefits of HD-DN therapy were evident principally in patients with intermediate-risk cytogenetic features. The toxicity profiles were similar in the 2 arms. In conclusion, HD-DN improved both the CR rate and survival duration compared with SD-DN in young adults with AML. This study is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT00474006.

Introduction Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of primary nodal (PN) or primary extranodal (PEN) origin may differ immunophenotypically, in that PEN lymphoma cells may originate from activated rather than germinal center B (GCB) cells. We evaluated the relationship between DLBCL clinicopathological features, including expression of B-cell differentiation markers, and primary tumor site. Patients and Methods Expression of CD10, Bcl-6, Bcl-2, and MUM1 was determined in paraffin-embedded tissues from 123 patients with DLBCL. Results Of the 123 patients with DLBCL, 40 (32.5%) had the GCB and 83 (67.5%) had the non-GCB phenotype. Fifty-one patients (42%) showed disease involvement at PEN sites, including 29 with disease in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (14 in the stomach, 15 in the intestine). Of these 51 patients, 16 (31.4%) were classified with the GCB and 35 (68.5%) with the non-GCB subtype. There were no differences in the frequencies of GCB and non-GCB subtypes among primary sites. Of the 72 patients with PN DLBCL, 22 (31%) had the GCB and 50 (69%) had the non-GCB subtype. There were no differences in the frequencies of GCB and non-GCB subtypes between patients with PN and PEN DLBCL. Although lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration > normal, stage >II, and rituximab-cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (RCHOP) treatment were independent predictors of overall survival (OS), GCB subtype, and presence of PEN disease failed to predict survival upon multivariate analysis. Conclusion There was no difference in GCB and non-GCB phenotypes between patients with PN and PEN DLBCLs. Additional studies are needed to further assess molecular differences between the two groups.

A novel concept of the gridable desalination plant is to provide an operation management to enable an electricity plant operation cost reduction. Adjusting recovery rate responded to electricity price, an electricity plant operation cost can be saved. To show a suggested approach, the data of 10 [MIGD](Million Imperial Gallons per Day) SWRO testbed are used. The result shows that total cost reduction rate is calculated about 1.6[%] of annual total electric plant operation cost.

Upfront allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) as first line therapy for older than 40 or 50 years is not usually recommended for severe aplastic anemia patients even though there are suitable matched sibling donors because they usually have poor outcomes after alloHCT. Therefore, first line immune suppression therapy (IST) is recommended. However, current outstanding alloHCT outcome can make it possible to try upfront alloHCT even in older AA patients. The purpose of this retrospective study is to determine the transplantation-related results in AA patients older than 40 years. This study collected data retrospectively for older AA patients. Congenital bone marrow failure was excluded from this study. alloHCT was divided as upfront and second alloHCT according to prior IST. Total 129 patients were enrolled in this study from 2001 to 2017. Age at diagnosis and at alloHCT were 25 to 63 (median 48.0) years and 40.3-64.9 (median 49.1) years, respectively. Median time from diagnosis to alloHCT was 5.2 (range, 1-234.1) months. Upfront and second alloHCT were 42 and 87 patients, respectively. Upfront alloHCT received more stem cells from related donors, more BM stem cells and more fludarabine conditioning compared with second alloHCT (83.3% vs. 58.6%, p=0.005; 52.4% vs. 74.7%, p=0.011; 52.4% vs. 30.2%, p=0.015, respectively). However, ABO mismatching (p=0.747), TBI conditioning (p=0.547), cyclophosphamide conditioning (p=0.114), ATG conditioning (p=0.483) were similar between upfront and second alloHCT. Any engraftment failure, neutrophil engraftment failure and platelet engraftment failure were similar between upfront and second alloHCT (28.6% vs. 28.7%, p=0.985; 19.0% vs. 18.4%, p=0.928; 19.0% vs. 34.5%, p=0.072). Hepatic SOS, acute GvHD and chronic GvHD were also similar between upfront and second alloHCT (4.8% vs. 5.7%, p=0.817; 28.6% vs. 36.5%, p=0.376; 19.0% vs. 19.5%, p=0.947). Survival rates at 1Y, 2Y, 3Y and 5Y were 90.7, 82.2, 73.5 and 64.3%, respectively. Survival rates at 5 years in upfront and second alloHCT were 76.2 and 54.1%, respectively (p=0.059). Survival rates at 5 years (5YSR) in age 40-50y, 50-60y, and older than 60y were 64.1, 62.4 and 50.0%, respectively (p=0.349). alloHCT from matched related donor or other donors had similar survival rates (p=0.404). However, upfront alloHCT showed superior survival rate (5YSR 76.5% vs. 53.2%, p=0.114) without statistical significance compared with second alloHCT even in matched related donor subgroup. This trend is similar in alternative donor subgroup (5YSR 75.0% in upfront alloHCT vs. 54.9% in second alloHCT, p=0.459). alloHCT in older AA showed promising results even in patient older than 60 years although upfront alloHCT showed marginal statistical superiority. Introduction Four cycles of bortezomib/thalidomide/dexamethasone (VTD) induction therapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is one of the standard therapy for patients aged less than 65 years with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM). Complete remission (CR) status before ASCT is an important prognostic factor for progression-free survival (PFS). We analyzed whether two additional cycles of VTD improved the pre- and post-transplant responses as well as PFS compared to the four cycles of VTD induction therapy. Methods A total of 222 patients with NDMM between September 2014 and August 2016 from eleven hospitals in South Korea were included in the current study. The patients received at least four or more cycles of VTD induction therapy before administration of high-dose therapy (HDT, melphalan 200mg/m2) followed by ASCT. VTD regimen was consisted of bortezomib subcutaneous infusion (1.3 mg/m2 on days 1, 4, 8, and 11), thalidomide (100 mg daily), and dexamethasone (40 mg on days 1-4, 8-11), which was administered every 4 weeks. Results The median age was 57 years (range 30−64 years), and 120 patients (61.9%) were male. Revised international scoring system (R-ISS) classified 59 (30.4%), 86 (44.3%), and 49 patients (25.3%) as stage I, II, and III, respectively. VTD induction was administered 4 cycles in 194 patients (VTD4, 67.5%) and more than 4 cycles in 63 (VTD6, 32.5%) before HDT. Patient characteristics at diagnosis did not differ between VTD4 and VTD6. CR rate before HDT was significantly higher in VTD6 than VTD4 (31.7% vs 13.0%, P = 0.003). However, CR rate after HDT/ASCT was similar between VTD4 and VTD6 (69.0% vs 65.5%, P = 0.726). There was no difference in the incidence of peripheral neuropathy (PN) (≥ grade 2 or that required dose reduction) between two groups. The median follow-up duration was 18.0 months (range 7.0-43.8 months). The 2-year PFS did not differ between the two groups (51.7 ±5.7% in VTD4 and 62.1±8.6% in VTD6, P = 0.240). Multivariate analysis revealed that the achievement of CR was a favorable prognostic factor for PFS (HR 0.27 [0.08−0.90], P = 0.034). Deletion 17p (HR 2.87 [1.01−7.92], P = 0.048) and t(4;14) (HR 3.38 [1.76−6.48], P < 0.001) in FISH were adverse prognostic factors for PFS. Patients with stage I/II by R-ISS receiving additional two cycles of VTD showed prolonged PFS (median PFS not reached vs. 27.6 months, P = 0.034). In the multivariate analysis, VTD6 was a favorable prognostic factor for PFS for patients with stage I/II by R-ISS, (HR 0.11 [0.02−0.52], P = 0.005). Conclusion CR rates increased with additional cycles of VTD induction therapy for NDMM. However, the PFS benefit was observed only in patients with R-ISS stage I/II. For patients with high-risk MM, intensive induction therapy that overcome poor prognostic factors should be administered to improve long-term outcomes. Figure. Figure. Pepper mild mosaic virus(PMMoV) and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) are important pathogens in various vegetable crops worldwide. We have found that hot water extract of Phellinus linteus mycelium strongly inhibit PMMoV and CMV infection. Based on these results, the inhibitor named as ‘PLM-WE1’ formulated from extract of Phellinus linteus mycelium was tested for its inhibitory effects on PMMoV and CMV infection to each local lesion host plant (Nicotiana glutinosa: PMMoV, Chenopodium amaranticolor: CMV). Pretreatment effect of PLM-WE1 against infections of each virus (PMMoV and CMV) to local host plant was measured to be 99.2% to PMMoV and 80.3% to CMV, and its permeability effect was measured to be 45.0% to PMMoV and 41.9% to CMV. Duration of inhibitory activity of PLM-WE1 against PMMoV infection on N. glutinosa was maintained for 3 days at 75% inhibition level and CMV infection on C. amaranticolor maintained for 3 days at 62% inhibition level. Inhibitory effects on systemic host plants of PLM-WE1 were measured to be 75~85% to PMMoV and 75% to CMV. Under electron microscope, PMMoV particles were not denatured or aggregated by mixing PLM-WE1. It is suggested that the mode of action of PLM-WE1 differ from that of inactivation due to the aggregation of viruses. The methanol extract of P. linteus mycelium was sequentially partitioned with haxane, ethyl acetate, BuOH and H O. The H O fraction was showed high activity than the other fractions. The active compound was isolated with a partial acid hydrolysis, fractional precipitation with ethanol. The inhibitory effect of the precipitate isolated from 70% ethanol fraction was 99.1% to PMMoV and 88.0% to CMV. The structure of isolated compound was determined by H-NMR and C-NMR. This compound was identified as a polysaccharide consisting alpha or beta-glucan.

In this paper, local and global smart grid security standard and security vulnerabilities in power grid are reviewed, and 2 level smart grid service model is proposed.

In this study, a method for electroless Ni–P plating with excellent adhesion via chemical wet etching to fabricate a Bi2Te3 thermoelectric module is proposed. The electroless Ni–P plating formed through the proposed process showed excellent adherence and did not desquamate, even under heat treatment at 200 °C for 24 h. Wet etching and electroless Ni–P plating was performed on a Bi2Te3 thermoelectric module, which showed excellent bond strength at approximately 10 MPa. The surface roughness of the Bi2Te3 thermoelectric element increased largely due to wet etching, and the adherence of the Ni–P plating could be secured by means of the anchor (surface roughness) effect.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a combination regimen of S-1, paclitaxel plus cisplatin in patients with advanced gastric cancer.Patients with previously untreated metastatic or recurrent, measurable gastric cancer received intravenous paclitaxel 80 mg/m² plus cisplatin 30 mg/m² on days 1, 8 and S-1 35 mg/m² orally twice daily on days 1-14 based on a 3-week cycle.Forty-four patients were enrolled in the current study, among whom 38 were assessable for efficacy and all assessable for toxicity. Two complete response and 24 partial responses were confirmed, giving an overall response rate of 59.1%. At a median follow-up of 11.4 months, the median time to progression and median overall survival was 9.4 (95% CI 6.8-12.1) months and 11.2 (95% CI 7.6-14.8) months, respectively. Grade 3/4 neutropenia occurred in 45 events (20.9%) and febrile neutropenia was observed in five events (2.3%). The common non-hematologic toxicity was nausea (grade 1/2, 27.2%) and diarrhea (grade 1/2, 9.0%).The combination of S-1, paclitaxel and cisplatin was found to be well tolerated and effective in patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Previous reports suggest that, in addition to its therapeutic effects, ionizing radiation (IR) increases the invasiveness of surviving cancer cells. Here, we demonstrate that this activity of IR in lung cancer cells is mediated by a signaling pathway involving p38 kinase, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, Akt, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-2). The invasion-promoting doses of IR also increased and reduced the levels of vimentin and E-cadherin, respectively, both of which are markers for the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Interestingly, all of these malignant actions of IR were mimicked by the overexpression of Bcl-X(L), a pro-survival member of the Bcl-2 family, in lung cancer cells. Moreover, both RNA and protein levels of Bcl-X(L) were elevated upon irradiation of the cells, and the prevention of this event using small-interfering RNAs of Bcl-X(L) reduced the ability of IR to promote invasion signals and EMT-associated events. This suggests that Bcl-X(L) functions as a signaling mediator of the malignant effects of IR. It was also demonstrated that IR enhances signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation, and the reduction of STAT3 levels via RNA interference prevented IR-induced Bcl-X(L) accumulation, and thus all the tested Bcl-X(L)-dependent events. Overall, the data suggest that IR induces Bcl-X(L) accumulation via STAT3, which then promotes cancer cell invasion and EMT-associated markers. Our findings demonstrate a novel function of Bcl-X(L) in cancer, and also advance our understanding of the malignant actions of IR significantly.

The present study analyzed the polymorphisms of DNA repair genes and their impact on the response to chemotherapy and survival of patients with colorectal cancer.A total of 94 patients with recurrent or metastatic colorectal cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based combination chemotherapy were enrolled in the present study. The single nucleotide polymorphisms of 16 DNA repair genes were determined using a PCR-RFLP assay.During the median follow-up duration of 15.9 (2.1-53.0) months, 67 (71.3%) progressions and 29 (30.9%) deaths were observed. Among the 60 patients assessable for response, response to the oxaliplatin-based regimens was found in 27 (45%) patients (9 CR and 18 PR). In a logistic regression analysis adjusted to age, sex, primary site, disease status, and regimen, the POLR2C rs4937 and MSH2 rs3732183 polymorphisms were statistically associated with the response to the oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. A multivariate survival analysis showed that the TT genotype of the MGMT (rs1625649) -535GT polymorphism was found to correlate with a worse progression-free survival (PFS) than the combined GG + GT genotypes (HR = 3.137; 95% CI = 1.423-6.914; P = 0.005), which was also observed among the 60 evaluable patients (HR = 2.653; 95% CI = 1.101-6.392; P = 0.030) For the clinical parameters, curative resection was the most significant prognostic factor in a Cox model for PFS and overall survival (HR = 0.229 and 0.205; P0.001 and 0.001, respectively).The MGMT -535GT polymorphism (rs1625649) was found to be correlated with PFS in patients with advanced colorectal cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.

Objective This prospective multicenter study conducted by the Korean Cancer Study Group evaluated the efficacy and safety of pemetrexed in Korean patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had prior chemotherapy. Patients and methods: Patients with stage IIIB or IV NSCLC in whom prior chemotherapy failed received pemetrexed 500mg/m 2 every 3 weeks with folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation until disease progression or the development of intolerable toxicity. Eighty-one patients were enrolled. Results The overall response rate for 78 evaluable patients was 5.1% [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.4–12.6; partial response 4/78, no complete response]. The disease control rate including complete, partial response and stable disease was 46.2% (36/78, 95% CI 34.8–57.8). With a median 8.7 months follow-up, the median time to progression was 3.1 months (95% CI 1.17–5.03) and the median overall survival (OS) was 7.8 months (95% CI 5.19–10.35). The median OS for patients with adenocarcinoma histology was 18.7 months compared to 6.1 months for non-adenocarcinoma. In a multivariate analysis, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0–1 [hazards ratio (HR)=0.331, 95% CI 0.135–0.814] and adenocarcinoma (HR=0.504, 95% CI 0.283–0.899) were independent factors for prolongation of overall survival.Conclusions Pemetrexed monotherapy has promising efficacy in patients with advanced NSCLC as a second-line therapy with less hematologic and non-hematologic toxicity, especially in those with adenocarcinoma histology.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel and cisplatin combination chemotherapy in patients with metastatic esophageal cancer.Patients with untreated metastatic squamous cell esophageal cancer, which was histologically proven with at least one measurable lesion, were eligible for the study. Docetaxel 70 mg/m(2) and cisplatin 70 mg/m(2) were intravenously given on day 1 of 21 days schedule.From December 2004 to December 2007, total of 39 patients (M/F = 39/0) were enrolled. The median age was 65 years. Thirty-four patients were evaluable for response. There were 3 (7.7%) complete remission, 10 (25.6%) partial remission, 11 (28.2%) stable disease, and 10 (25.6%) progression disease. The objective tumor response rate was 33.3% in intention-to-treat (ITT). Median PFS was 5.0 months and median survival was 8.3 months. Median number of cycles administered was 3. The relative dose intensity of docetaxel and cisplatin was 92 and 91%, respectively. This treatment was comparatively tolerated with grade 3/4 neutropenia in 20.5%/10.3%, grade 3 infection in 2.6% of patients.Docetaxel plus cisplatin combination chemotherapy showed promising antitumor activity with manageable toxicities in patients with metastatic squamous esophageal cancer.

In general, the root color of Codonopsis lanceolata is white, but red or blue-colored root is found at a low frequency in nature. Red or blue-colored roots have scarcity value, thus farmers wish to produce colored roots. The factors for determining the color of roots are unclear whether the color is controlled by genetically or simply by environmentally such as soil environment. Using in vitro culture system which is advantageous for setting of the same culture condition, we analyzed the physiological and morphological characteristics and genetic differences among red-, blue- and white lines of C. lanceolata. In the red colored roots, stems of in vitro cultured plantlet were colored in dark red pigment. Histological analysis revealed that the red pigment was accumulated in the outer cortex layer of the stem and determined as anthocyanin. Chlorophyll contents in red root lines were higher than those in white- and blue root lines. Plantlets from red roots were smaller in both shoot length and total leaf area than those from white- and blue roots. Genetic differences among the three different colored C. lanceolata were determined by RAPD (Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA) analysis. Each line of colored roots had clear DNA polymorphism. These results indicate that the occurrence of red- and blue colored roots in nature was determined by genetic factors rather than soil enviromental conditions.

Dendropanax morbifera (Araliaceae) is an endemic species in Korea and distributed in the southern part of Korea. The roots and stems of this plant have been used for folk medicine for the treatment of migraine headache, dysmenorrheal, and remove wind dampness and for Vanishes production. Production of adventitious roots in D. morbifera by in vitro cultures could be used as alternatives materials. Leaf, stem, and root segments from D. morbifera seedling were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 3.0 mg/L IBA and 30 g/L sucrose. After 4 weeks of culture, the highest induction of adventitious roots was obtained from the leaf segment. Frequency of adventitious root formation on medium with various kinds of auxins (IAA, NAA, 2,4-D, and IBA) and various concentrations of IBA (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mg/L) was tested. The maximum induction of adventitious root was obtained on medium with 1.0 mg/L IBA. In liquid culture, growth of root was best 1/2MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L IBA and 30 g/L sucrose. Adventitious roots were cultured in 5 L bioreactor containing 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L IBA and 30 g/L sucrose and mass-production of adventitious roots was successfully achieved. This study demonstrated for the first time to produce adventitious roots in D. morbifera.
