With a view of providing an unsurpassed opportunity to college students, who are mostly from Louisiana, in gaining a comprehensive understanding of Global Climate Change issues, we completed the first Nepal Field Experience Pilot Study Abroad from May 21-June 8, 2019. A total of fifteen students from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana, USA, and one graduate student from University of Arizona, Arizona, USA, participated in the program. Students examined and documented the effects of climate change impacts on agriculture, water resources, wildlife, local communities, forest resources, and other ecological and environmental settings of the country. They identified various climate change mitigation and adaptation measures that had been implemented and noted gaps between policy measures and ground realities. Research topics selected by the students included the following: climate change impacts on wildlife, water pollution, structural geology of Nepal, changing rainfall patterns and adaptation, climate change and agricultural production, geology of Kathmandu valley, air quality of Kathmandu valley, changing hydrology of glaciated landscape, climate change and geohazards, emerging diseases and pests on agricultural crops, climate change adaptation by local communities, green infrastructure and climate-smart technologies, climate change impact on drinking water sources, the roadside geology, and emerging diseases, parasites and zoonotics. Each student completed their individual research project, synthesized the results, and presented to local stakeholders in conference organized by a nonprofit nongovernmental organization, Asta-Ja Rsearch and Development Center (Asta-Ja RDC), Kathmandu, Nepal. Findings of the study reveal that Nepal is experiencing huge impacts of climate change in multiple fronts including atmospheric conditions and snowfall, temperature rise, occurrence of droughts and flooding, changes on monsoon pattern, emerging diseases and pests on crops and livestock, and declining drinking water sources. Environmental pollution, especially the air and water pollution and waste management, was very serious affecting public health, aesthetics, and even the tourism of the country. In order to reverse environmental degradation and enhance climate change adaptation, immediate implementation of effective, comprehensive, coordinated, and well-thought-out climate change adaptation and environmental initiatives are necessary. Nepal Field Experience was a lifetime learning experience for the students.

(1) Background: The preschool stage is a period of great psychological changes that requires the support of parents and significant adults for optimal development. Studies show that maternal mental health can be a risk factor in parenting, affecting the social-emotional development of children. (2) Methods: The present study seeks to shed light on the relation between depressive symptoms, parental stress in mothers and social-emotional development of their preschool children, using a total of 123 mother-child dyads with low Social-economic Status (SES). In mothers, depressive symptomatology and level of parental stress were evaluated, as well as social-emotional development in children. A possible mediation effect between maternal depressive symptoms and parenting stress is expected. (3) Results: The results indicate that higher levels of depressive symptoms and parenting stress in mothers relate to greater difficulties in social-emotional development of their preschool children. (4) Conclusions: These results are clinically relevant from the perspective of family therapy: Parents need support to decrease their levels of parenting stress in order not to jeopardise their children’s social-emotional development.

The NMR-based configurational analysis of complex marine natural products is still not a routine task. Different NMR parameters are used for the assignment of the relative configuration: NOE/ROE, homo- and heteronuclear J couplings as well as anisotropic parameters. The combined distance geometry (DG) and distance bounds driven dynamics (DDD) method allows a model-free approach for the determination of the relative configuration that is invariant to the choice of an initial starting structure and does not rely on comparisons with (DFT) calculated structures. Here, we will discuss the configurational analysis of five complex marine natural products or synthetic derivatives thereof: the cis-palau’amine derivatives 1a and 1b, tetrabromostyloguanidine (1c), plakilactone H (2), and manzamine A (3). The certainty of configurational assignments is evaluated in view of the accuracy of the NOE/ROE data available. These case studies will show the prospective breadth of application of the DG/DDD method.

The moving solar terminator (ST) generates atmospheric disturbances, broadly termed solar terminator waves (STWs). Despite theoretically recurring daily, STWs remain poorly understood, partially due to measurement challenges near the ST. Analyzing Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) data from NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) observatory, we present observations of STW signatures in thermospheric neutral winds, including the first reported meridional wind signatures. Seasonal analysis reveals STWs are most prominent during solstices, when they intersect the ST about ∼20° latitude from the equator in the winter hemisphere and have phase fronts inclined at a ∼40° angle to the ST. We also provide the first observed STW altitude profiles, revealing large vertical wavelengths above 200 km. Comparing these observations to four different models suggests the STWs likely originate directly or indirectly from waves from below 97 km. STWs may play an under‐recognized role in the daily variability of the thermosphere‐ionosphere system, warranting further study. Plain Language Summary: Every evening, the sunset removes the primary energy input to the upper atmosphere, causing rapid atmospheric cooling and generating disturbances called solar terminator waves (STWs). Although they theoretically occur every night, STWs remain poorly understood, partially because the rapidly changing atmospheric conditions near sunset make measurements challenging. This study examines neutral wind measurements from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High‐resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) on board NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) observatory to uncover signatures of STWs. We report the north‐south wind signatures of STWs and their altitude profile from 200 to 300 km, both of which have never been previously reported. We show that STWs are some of the largest amplitude dynamical features above 200 km near solstices, but are much weaker near equinoxes. By comparing our observations with the outputs of four different models, we find that STWs are likely generated directly or indirectly (from wave propagation) below 97 km. Future work is necessary to better understand how STWs are generated, how they vary on a daily basis, and the extent of their impacts on Earth's upper atmosphere.
