Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization. As of May 18, 2020, there have been more than 4.7 million cases and over 316,000 deaths worldwide. COVID-19 is caused by a highly infectious novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), leading to an acute infectious disease with mild-to-severe clinical symptoms such as flu-like symptoms, fever, headache, dry cough, muscle pain, loss of smell and taste, increased shortness of breath, bilateral viral pneumonia, conjunctivitis, acute respiratory distress syndromes, respiratory failure, cytokine release syndrome (CRS), sepsis, etc. While physicians and scientists have yet to discover a treatment, it is imperative that we urgently address 2 questions: how to prevent infection in immunologically naive individuals and how to treat severe symptoms such as CRS, acute respiratory failure, and the loss of somatosensation. Previous studies from the 1918 influenza pandemic have suggested vitamin D’s non-classical role in reducing lethal pneumonia and case fatality rates. Recent clinical trials also reported that vitamin D supplementation can reduce incidence of acute respiratory infection and the severity of respiratory tract diseases in adults and children. According to our literature search, there are no similar findings of clinical trials that have been published as of July 1st, 2020, in relation to the supplementation of vitamin D in the potential prevention and treatment for COVID-19. In this review, we summarize the potential role of vitamin D extra-renal metabolism in the prevention and treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, helping to bring us slightly closer to fulfilling that goal. We will focus on 3 major topics here: 1. Vitamin D might aid in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection: Vitamin D: Overview of Renal and Extra-renal metabolism and regulation. Vitamin D: Overview of molecular mechanism and multifaceted functions beyond skeletal homeostasis. Vitamin D: Overview of local immunomodulation in human infectious diseases. Anti-viral infection. Anti-malaria and anti-systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). 2. Vitamin D might act as a strong immunosuppressant inhibiting cytokine release syndrome in COVID-19: Vitamin D: Suppression of key pro-inflammatory pathways including nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). 3. Vitamin D might prevent loss of neural sensation in COVID-19 by stimulating expression of neurotrophins like Nerve Growth Factor (NGF): Vitamin D: Induction of key neurotrophic factors. .

Abstract Objective To explore the efficacy of primary chemoradiation with cisplatin versus cetuximab with respect to HPV/p16 and smoking statuses. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients from our center with locally advanced non-nasopharyngeal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who received primary chemoradiation with cisplatin or cetuximab between 2006 and 2018. Results The median OS for cisplatin (n = 66) was not reached versus 132 months when treated with cetuximab (n = 55) (p = 0.03). For HPV/p16-positive patients, we found the median OS for cisplatin (n = 34) was not reached versus 60 months with cetuximab (n = 21) (p = 0.036). In the smoking group, the median OS was not reached in the cisplatin group (n = 44) versus 60 months when treated with cetuximab (n = 32) (p = 0.03). Conclusion HPV/p16-positive and smoking cohorts treated with cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy had a significantly better OS versus cetuximab.

Abstract Here, we report a unique acute myeloid leukemia (AML) bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) with both mesenchymal and endothelial potential, which we have named Mesenchymal Cancer Stem Cells (MCSCs). These MCSCs are CD90-CD13-CD44+ and differ from MSCs in isolation, expansion, differentiation, immunophenotype, and cytokine release profile. Furthermore, blocking CD44 inhibited the proliferation and cluster formation of early MCSCs with lower ICAM-1 protein levels. Similar CD90-CD44+ cancer stem cells have been reported in both gastric and breast cancers, which grew in floating spheres in vitro and exhibited mesenchymal features and high metastatic/tumorigenic capabilities in vivo. Our novel discovery provides the first evidence that certain AMLs may be comprised of both hematopoietic and stromal malignant cells. Targeting MCSCs and their cytokine release has potential as a novel therapeutic approach in AML.

Hydro-mechanical power-split transmissions (HPSTs) are a kind of continuously variable transmission; HPSTs integrated with the hydraulic energy recovery and accumulation function are the most coherent selection to im-prove the energy efficiency of the garbage truck. With an accumulator located in the speed-increasing hydraulic converter of the HPSTs, it is possible to recover and accumulate energy during braking and reuse energy when starting, accelerating or using other technologies in the process of garbage collection and transportation. Some results of simulation research and analysis of the energy recovery and accumulation process introduced in this paper can be used as a scientific basis for the complete design of energy saving powertrain systems, quality, and environmental friendliness for garbage trucks. In this study, the results of the simulation and analysis of the energy recovery and accumulation process were reported. Our findings can be used as a scientific basis for the complete design of energy saving powertrain systems, quality, and environmental friendliness for garbage trucks.

Nghiên cứu nhằm xác định thực trạng phát sinh rác nhựa và đề xuất các giải pháp nhằm hạn chế phát sinh rác nhựa tại Trường Đại học Cần Thơ. Loại rác thải nhựa, loại nhựa trong rác thải nhựa phát sinh từ các phòng học và trong khuôn viên trường đã được khảo sát từ tháng 9/2020 đến tháng 1/2021. Điều tra về sử dụng sản phẩm nhựa và biện pháp giảm phát sinh rác nhựa được thực hiện bằng cách phỏng vấn cán bộ (n = 108), người học (n = 600) và người kinh doanh dịch vụ (n = 15). Kết quả cho thấy về khối lượng, rác nhựa chiếm 11,4% tổng khối lượng rác và nhựa LDPE phát sinh nhiều nhất (44,3%) trong khuôn viên trường. Túi nhựa loại LDPE phát sinh nhiều nhất từ phòng học, chiếm 31,9% tổng số loại rác thải nhựa. Hầu hết (80%) các đơn vị kinh doanh không phân loại sản phẩm nhựa sau sử dụng để tái chế hay bán phế liệu. Sự hạn chế công tác tuyên truyền, sự tiện lợi của sản phẩm nhựa và việc phân loại rác nhựa chưa tốt là các khó khăn chính trong việc hạn chế phát sinh rác nhựa. Tổng hợp các biện pháp gồm: tuyên truyền, phân loại rác, khen thưởng và chế tài (trừ điểm rèn luyện người học), nghiên cứu mô hình tái chế rác nhựa cần được tiến hành để hạn chế phát sinh rác nhựa.

Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá hiệu quả tài chính, xã hội và môi trường trong vùng đê bao ở thời điểm trước và sau xả lũ, làm cơ sở đề xuất biện pháp quản lý lũ vùng đê bao hiệu quả tại huyện Tri Tôn, An Giang. Nghiên cứu áp dụng phương pháp phân tích chi phí - lợi ích, thang đo Likert trong đánh giá số liệu. Các chỉ tiêu dựa trên các tiêu chí đánh giá đất đai của Tổ chức Nông lương Liên Hợp Quốc (FAO) và các nghiên cứu đã được thực hiện ở Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long. Sau xả lũ, trung bình năng suất lúa (6,4 tấn/ha) cao hơn trước xả lũ (5,6 tấn/ha); lợi nhuận 15,8 triệu đồng/ha/vụ cao hơn trước xả lũ 11,4 triệu đồng/ha/vụ; lượng phân bón, lượng thuốc bảo vệ thực vật cũng như tần suất sử dụng thuốc giảm so với trước xả lũ. Môi trường đất sau xả lũ được cung cấp thêm phù sa, dinh dưỡng và tăng nguồn lợi thủy sản. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy canh tác lúa sau xả lũ mang lại hiệu quả kinh tế, xã hội và môi trường so với trước xả lũ. Mô hình canh tác lúa sau xả lũ cho tổng số điểm 3 mục tiêu (kinh tế, xã hội và môi trường) lớn hơn thời điểm trước xả lũ với số điểm lần lượt là 0,96 và 0,86.

Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá sự đa dạng của thực vật nổi trong và ngoài đê bao khép kín xã Vọng Đông, huyện Thoại Sơn, tỉnh An Giang. Mẫu thực vật nổi được thu 02 đợt trong năm 2019 vào thời điểm mùa khô (tháng 04) và mùa mưa (tháng 10) với tổng cộng 30 vị trí/đợt. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã xác định được số loài trong đê (42 loài) thấp hơn ngoài đê (74 loài) ở mùa khô, nhưng vào mùa mưa thì số loài trong đê (113 loài) cao hơn ngoài đê (101 loài). Trong đê thì ngành tảo khuê và tảo mắt chiếm ưu thế và ngoài đê thì tảo lục và tảo mắt chiếm ưu thế. Mật độ thực vật nổi trong đê thấp hơn ngoài đê, mật độ ghi nhận được trong đê mùa khô 4.980 ct/L và ngoài đê 13.943 ct/L; và mùa mưa mật độ là 11.540 ct/L và 13.550 ct/L. Chỉ số Shannon-Weiner (H') trong đê dao động từ 1,22-3,55 và ngoài đê dao động từ 1,27-3,58. Chất lượng nước tại các vị trí thu mẫu được đánh giá từ ô nhiễm nhẹ đến ô nhiễm nặng. Nhìn chung, việc bao đê ở vùng nghiên cứu đã làm giảm số loài và số lượng thực vật nổi về lâu dài sẽ làm mất đi một lượng phân hữu cơ cho đất.

Nghiên cứu được thực hiện tại xã Phú Xuân (khu vực trong đê bao khép kín) và Hiệp Xương (khu vực ngoài đê bao khép kín), huyện Phú Tân, tỉnh An Giang với mục tiêu đánh giá tính chất đất giữa trong đê và ngoài đê bao khép kín. Mẫu đất được thu tại (i) 15 điểm trong đê với 2 đợt thu mẫu vào tháng 2/2018 và tháng 10/2018 và (ii)15 điểm ngoài đê với 2 đợt thu mẫu vào tháng 2/2018 và tháng 8/2018. Mẫu đất được thu theo phương pháp tổ hợp gồm 5 mẫu đất (tầng 0-20 cm) để phân tích dung trọng, tỷ trọng, độ xốp, sa cấu đất, pH, độ dẫn điện, chất hữu cơ, khả năng trao đổi cation (CEC), tổng đạm, tổng lân, tổng kali và nitrate (NO3-N). Kết quả nghiên cứu đã cho thấy pH, dung trọng, tỷ trọng và độ xốp không có sự khác biệt giữa trong đê và ngoài đê, ngoại trừ độ dẫn điện thì trong đê cao có ý nghĩa so với ngoài đê. Các thông số như hàm lượng chất hữu cơ, CEC, tổng đạm và tổng lân trong đê có giá trị cao hơn ngoài đê với các giá trị lần lượt: chất hữu cơ (8,67% và 5,49%), CEC (26,1 cmol kg-1 và 20,7 cmol kg-1), tổng đạm (0,32 %N và 0,25 %N) và tổng lân (0,19 %P2O5 và 0,14 %P2O5). Thông số NO3-N cũng cho thấy được giá trị trong đê (1,74 mg kg-1) cao hơn ngoài đê (1,52 mg kg-1) nhưng không có khác biệt (p>0,05). Tương tự, hàm lượng tổng kali không khác biệt giữa trong đê (1,33%) và ngoài đê (1,32%). Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy hàm lượng chất hữu cơ, đạm, lân trong đê cao hơn ngoài đê.

Đề tài nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm mục tiêu đánh giá tính chất vật lý, hóa học đất trong và ngoài đê bao ngăn lũ ở nhóm đất phèn ở Tri Tôn và đất phù sa cổ ở Tịnh Biên. Số lượng mẫu đất được thu ngẫu nhiên trên mỗi nhóm đất là 32 mẫu gồm: 16 mẫu trong đê (vùng lúa 3 vụ) và 16 mẫu ngoài đê (lúa 2 vụ). Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy việc canh tác lúa 3 vụ trong đê bao đã làm pH đất trong đê thấp hơn so với pH đất ngoài đê; EC của đất trong đê cao hơn so với EC của đất ngoài đê. Hàm lượng chất hữu cơ tầng mặt trong đê (3 vụ lúa) cao hơn so với đất ngoài đê (2 vụ lúa). Từ đó dẫn đến khả năng trao đổi cation (CEC), đạm tổng số của đất trong đê cũng cao hơn so với đất ngoài đê, đặc biệt ở tầng đất mặt Ap. Trong khi đó, hàm lượng lân tổng số và kali tổng số khác biệt không có ý nghĩa thống kê ở cả hai điểm nghiên cứu. Độ nén dẽ của tầng đất Bg luôn cao hơn ở đất trong đê so với đất ngoài đê ở cả hai điểm nghiên cứu Tri Tôn và Tịnh Biên thể hiện qua độ xốp và hệ số thấm thấp, dung trọng và độ chặt của đất cao.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)—the most frequent form of adult blood cancer—is characterized by heterogeneous mechanisms and disease progression. Developing an effective therapeutic strategy that targets metabolic homeostasis and energy production in immature leukemic cells (blasts) is essential for overcoming relapse and improving the prognosis of AML patients with different subtypes. With respect to metabolic regulation, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase 1 (FBP1) is a gluconeogenic enzyme that is vital to carbohydrate metabolism, since gluconeogenesis is the central pathway for the production of important metabolites and energy necessary to maintain normal cellular activities. Beyond its catalytic activity, FBP1 inhibits aerobic glycolysis—known as the “Warburg effect”—in cancer cells. Importantly, while downregulation of FBP1 is associated with carcinogenesis in major human organs, restoration of FBP1 in cancer cells promotes apoptosis and prevents disease progression in solid tumors. Recently, our large-scale sequencing analyses revealed FBP1 as a novel inducible therapeutic target among 17,757 vitamin-D-responsive genes in MV4-11 or MOLM-14 blasts in vitro, both of which were derived from AML patients with FLT3 mutations. To investigate FBP1′s anti-leukemic function in this study, we generated a new AML cell line through lentiviral overexpression of an FBP1 transgene in vitro (named FBP1-MV4-11). Results showed that FBP1-MV4-11 blasts are more prone to apoptosis than MV4-11 blasts. Mechanistically, FBP1-MV4-11 blasts have significantly increased gene and protein expression of P53, as confirmed by the P53 promoter assay in vitro. However, enhanced cell death and reduced proliferation of FBP1-MV4-11 blasts could be reversed by supplementation with post-glycolytic metabolites in vitro. Additionally, FBP1-MV4-11 blasts were found to have impaired mitochondrial homeostasis through reduced cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 (COX2 or MT-CO2) and upregulated PTEN-induced kinase (PINK1) expressions. In summary, this is the first in vitro evidence that FBP1-altered carbohydrate metabolism and FBP1-activated P53 can initiate leukemic death by activating mitochondrial reprogramming in AML blasts, supporting the clinical potential of FBP1-based therapies for AML-like cancers.
