Abstract

This study was inspired by an elastomeric friction damper consisting of a soft rubber tube sliding inside a rigid cylinder. As fundamental friction data indicated that rubber friction strongly depends on the contact pressure, the mathematical model must account for this dependency for good accuracy. Here we proposed an iterative computation scheme using finite element method as the calculation tool. In the FE model, the contact area was divided into small segments, each prescribed with a unique friction coefficient. In each FE calculation, the distribution of contact pressure can be calculated, each friction coefficient is then altered based on the corresponding contact pressure just obtained, and a next FE model is formed. By repeating this process several times, all the model parameters would become stable; sensible friction prediction was then achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

169. Adoption of Good Agricultural Practices Standard by Cattle Farmers in the Binh Dinh Province of Vietnam

Abstract

This study examined factors that affect the adoption of VietGAP by Vietnamese beef cattle farmers. A random sample of 305 farmers was drawn from a total of 1279 farmers who produced and marketed beef cattle in the Binh Dinh province of Vietnam. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including percentages, means, standard deviations, a chi squares test, t-test and a binary logistic regression model were employed to analyse the data. The study found that the young male farmers with a higher education level, who have a large number of cattle, possess a large farm and own ICT tools for marketing, have high income and communication with extension officers, have a greater tendency to adopt VietGAP.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) enable smallholders in developing countries access to timely and reliable agricultural market information, allowing them to make viable decisions and hence improve their income. This research investigates factors that shape the Vietnamese smallholders’ adoption of mobile phones for marketing. A random sample of 161 smallholders was drawn from a total of 275 smallholders who produced and marketed cereals in Quang Dien district of Vietnam. Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and a binary logistic regression model were applied to analyse the data. The research found that the young male smallholders with a higher education level, who live far from an electricity base, have high income, participate in credit programs and who are members of CBOs, have a greater tendency to adopt mobile phones for marketing. Lack of knowledge/skills to use applications on mobile phones, together with language barriers and mobile phone network problems are hindering smallholder adoption of mobile phones for marketing.

190. A Comparison of Two Methods for Calculating Total Antipsychotic Dose.

Abstract

Objective: To compare two methods of calculating total antipsychotic drug dosage with a representative patient sample in Hong Kong. Methods: Antipsychotic prescription data from 8,620 inpatients and outpatients in the New Territories West Cluster hospitals of Hong Kong were collected. The total antipsychotic dose was calculated using the chlorpromazine equivalent method and the percentage of maximum recommended method. Results: There was 97.2% concordance between these two methods, with a Spearman's rank correlation of 0.92. High doses of antipsychotic medications were prescribed for 3.2% and 2.8% of the sample based on the chlorpromazine equivalent and percentage of maximum recommended methods, respectively. Conclusions: Total antipsychotic dose expressed as a percentage of the maximum recommended dose is easy to calculate and avoids the ambiguity associated with the chlorpromazine equivalent method, besides it helps to identify patients receiving high doses of antipsychotics, thus facilitating monitoring and adherence to current guidelines.
