The Archean Hollandaire volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is a felsic–siliciclastic VMS deposit located in the Murchison Domain of the Youanmi Terrane, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. It is hosted in a succession of turbidites, mudstones and coherent rhyodacite sills, has been metamorphosed to upper greenschist/lower amphibolite facies and includes a pervasive S1 deformational fabric. The coherent rhyodacitic sills are interpreted as syndepositional based on geochemical similarities with well-known VMS-associated felsic rocks and similar foliations to the metasediments. We offer several explanations for the absence of textural evidence (e.g. breccias) for syn-depositional origins: (1) the subaqueous sediments were dehydrated by long-lived magmatism such that no pore-water remained to drive quench fragmentation, (2) pore-space occlusion by burial, and/or (3) alteration overprinting and obscuring of primary breccias at contact margins. Mineralisation occurs by sub-seafloor replacement of original host rocks in two ore bodies, Hollandaire Main (∼125 × >500 m and ∼8 m thick) and Hollandaire West (∼100 × 470 m and ∼5 m thick), and occurs in three main textural styles, massive sulfides, which are exclusively hosted in turbidites and mudstones, and stringer and disseminated sulfides, which are also hosted in coherent rhyodacite. Most sulfides have textures consistent with remobilisation and recrystallisation. Hydrothermal metamorphism has altered the hangingwall and footwall to similar degrees, with significant gains in Mg, Mn and K and losses in Na, Ca and Sr. Garnet and staurolite porphyryoblasts also exhibit a footprint around mineralisation, extending up to 30 m both above and below the ore zone. This paper introduces a new cell design for the construction of lithium ion batteries with conventional electrochemical performance whilst allowing in situ neutron diffraction measurement. A cell comprising of a wound cathode, electrolyte and anode stack has been prepared. The conventional hydrogen-containing components of the cell have been replaced by hydrogen-free equivalents. The electrodes are fabricated using a PTFE binder, the electrolyte consists of deuterated solvents which are supported in a quartz glass fibre separator. Typical battery performance is reported using the hydrogen-free components with a specific capacity of 140 mA h g-1 being observed for LiFePO4 at a rate of 0.2 C. Neutron diffraction patterns of full cells were recorded with phase change reactions monitored. When aluminium packaging was used a better signal to noise ratio was obtained. The obtained atomic positions and lattice parameters for all cells investigated were found to be consistent with parameters refined from the diffraction pattern of a powder of the pure electrode material. This paper highlights the pertinent points in designing cells for these measurements and addresses some of the problems.

Oxygen-deficient ferrates with the cubic perovskite structure SrxY1-xFeO3-delta were prepared in air (0.71 <= x <= 0.91) as well as in N-2 (x=0.75 and 0.79) at 1573 K. The oxygen content of the compounds prepared in air increases with increasing strontium content from 3-delta=2.79(2) for x=0.75 to 3-delta=2.83(2) for x=0.91. Refinement of the crystal structure of Sr0.25Y0.25FeO2.29 using TOP neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data shows high anisotropic atomic displacement parameter (ADP) for the oxygen atom resulting from a substantial cation and anion disorder. Electron diffraction (ED) and highresolution electron microscopy (HREM) studies of Sr0.75Y0.25FeO2.79 reveal a modulation along (1 0 0)(p) with G +/- similar to 0.4(1 0 0)(p) indicating a local ordering of oxygen vacancies. Magnetic susceptibility measurements at 5-390 K show spin-glass behaviour with dominating antiferromagnetic coupling between the magnetic moments of Fe cations. Among the studied compositions, Sr0.75Y0.25Fe02.79 shows the lowest thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of 10.5 ppm/K in air at 298-673 K. At 773-1173 K TEC increases up to 17.2 ppm/K due to substantial reduction of oxygen content. The latter also results in a dramatic decrease of the electrical conductivity in air above 673 K. Partial substitution of Fe by Cr, Mn and Ni according to the formula Sr0.75Y0.25Fe1-yMyO3-delta (y=0.2, 0.33, 0.5) leads to cubic perovskites for all substituents with y=0.2. Their TECs are higher in comparison with un-doped Sr0.75Y0.25Fe02.79. Only M=Ni has increased electrical conductivity compared to un-doped Sr0.75Y0.25Fe02.79.

We present a study of order-disorder phenomena in the series of tetrahedral ordered vacancy compounds Zn1-xMnxGa2Se 4 by means of time-of-flight neutron diffraction at high temperature together with dc magnetic susceptibility, Raman spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and optical absorption experiments. Samples of nominal composition x = 0, 0.24, 0.5, 0.77 and 1 have been studied. An order-disorder phase transition has been detected, with Tc ranging from 472 to 610°C, which involves a structural change from a defect chalcopyrite phase, with space group (s.g.) and three different cation sites, to a partially disordered defect stannite, in which Zn, Mn and half of the Ga ions share the 4d site in s.g. Neither the vacancies nor the Ga ions occupying site 2a are involved in the phase transition. An additional ordering process is observed on approaching the phase transition from below, which is attributed to several factors: the activation of cation diffusion at ∼300°C, the partially disordered cation distribution exhibited by the as-grown single crystals and the preference of Mn atoms for the 2d crystallographic site in the structure. The reversibility of the phase transition is analysed with the aid of magnetic, optical and Raman experiments. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The novel perovskites La2CrB2/3Nb1/3O6, B = Mg, Ni, and Cu have been synthesised at 1350 degrees C in air via the citrate route. Rietveld refinements using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data showed that the compounds adopt the GdFeO3 type structure with space group Pbnm, and unit cell parameters a approximate to b approximate to root 2 x a(p) and c approximate to 2 x a(p), where a(p) approximate to 3.8 angstrom. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of B = Ni and Cu samples confirmed space group Pbnm. However, distinct reflections forbidden in Pbnm symmetry, but allowed in the monoclinic sub-group P2(1)/n and unit cell parameters a approximate to b approximate to root 2 x a(p) and c approximate to 2 x a(p), beta approximate to 90 degrees were present in SAED patterns of B = Mg sample. This indicates an ordering of the B-cations within the crystal structure of La2CrMg2/3Nb1/3O6. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) study indicating uniform, without formation of clusters, ordering of B-cations in the crystallites of La2CrMg2/3Nb1/3O6. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the compounds are antiferromagnetic (with some glass or spin clustering effects due to additional ferromagnetic interactions between the B-cations) with T-N for La2CrB2/3Nb1/3O6, B = Mg, Ni, Cu being 90, 125 and 140K, respectively., AuthorCount:11
