170. Redox-Sensitive NiOxStabilizing Perovskite Films for High-Performance Photovoltaics

Abstract

Metal halide perovskite materials inherently possess imperfections, particularly under nonequilibrium conditions, such as exposure to light or heat. To tackle this challenge, we introduced stearate ligand-capped nickel oxide (NiOx), a redox-sensitive metal oxide with variable valence, into perovskite intermediate films. The integration of NiOximproved the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by offering multifunctional roles: (1) chemical passivation for ongoing defect repair, (2) energetic passivation to bolster defect tolerance, and (3) field-effect passivation to mitigate charge accumulation. Employing a synergistic approach that tailored these three passivation mechanisms led to a substantial increase in the devices’ efficiencies. The target cell (0.12 cm2) and module (18 cm2) exhibited efficiencies of 24.0 and 22.9%, respectively. Notably, the encapsulated modules maintained almost 100 and 87% of the initial efficiencies after operating for 1100 h at the maximum power point (60 °C, 50% RH) and 2000 h of damp-heat testing (85 °C, 85% RH), respectively. Outdoor real-time tests further validated the commercial viability of the NiOx-assisted PSMs. The proposed passivation strategy provides a practical and uncomplicated approach for fabricating high-efficiency and stable photovoltaics.

Abstract

In the present study, we developed an effective encapsulation method for highly stable perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). By simultaneously introducing UV absorbers with biomimetic textures on the backside of the FTO substrate and a heat-extraction composite layer composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and commercially available Norland Optical Adhesive (NOA) on the Au electrode, we successfully demonstrated highly efficient and stable PeSCs. The UV-absorbing layer with micro- and nano-hierarchical structures effectively cut UV light while increasing the transmittance of visible light, resulting in enhanced device stability without sacrificing the photocurrent caused by cutting the incident UV light. In addition, the introduction of a composite layer comprising rGO and NOA on the Au electrode offers superior protection, attributed to the hydrophobic nature of epoxy and the increased complexity of the oxygen or water diffusion pathway. Additionally, the outstanding thermal conductivity of rGO facilitated efficient heat dissipation through the encapsulation layer. Abstract

In p–i–n type lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the poor wettability of the perovskite solution on the typically used hole transport layer, poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA), is detrimental to obtaining high quality perovskite films. Moreover, the formation of excess lead iodide (PbI2) deteriorates the device stability. Herein, by introducing diamine hydrobromides with different lengths on the PTAA layer, its wettability is greatly increased, leading to a more uniform perovskite film and reduced trap density. Moreover, diamine hydrobromide can reduce excess PbI2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further prove the strong interaction between diamine hydrobromides and PbI2; diamine hydrobromides with different lengths present different binding energies with PbI2. Among them, hexanediamine hydrobromate (HDADBr) has the lowest binding energy with PbI2 and enables the least traps formed in the device. Moreover, HDADBr also has the weakest interaction with the I−-rich perovskite surface, and the distribution of the I density of states is expanded, which is more conducive to the diffusion of charge carriers. The best-performing PSC is achieved when HDADBr is used, which exhibits an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.22% from 18.41% of the control device. The device stability is also notably improved; the PCE of the unencapsulated PSC remains at 90% of the initial value after 400 h of degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

177. Intensive photochemical oxidation in the marine atmosphere: Evidence from direct radical measurements

Abstract

Comprehensive observations of hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxy (HO2) radicals were conducted in October 2019 at a coastal continental site in the Pearl River Delta (YMK site, 22.55° N, 114.60° E). The average daily maximum OH and HO2 concentrations were (4.7–9.5) × 106 cm−3 and (4.2–8.1) × 108 cm−3, respectively. The synchronized air mass transport from the northern cities and the South China Sea exerted a time-varying influence on atmospheric oxidation. Under a typical ocean-atmosphere (OCM), reasonable measurement model agreement was achieved for both OH and HO2 using a 0-D chemical box model incorporating the regional atmospheric chemistry mechanism version 2-Leuven isoprene mechanism (RACM2-LIM1). Land mass (LAM) influence promoted more active photochemical processes, with daily averages of 7.1 × 106 cm−3 and 5.2 × 108 cm−3 for OH and HO2, respectively. Intensive photochemistry occurred after precursor accumulation, allowing local net ozone production comparable with surrounding suburban environments (5.52 ppb/h during the LAM period). The rapid oxidation process was accompanied by a higher diurnal nitrous acid (HONO) concentration (> 400 ppt). After a sensitivity test, HONO-related chemistry elevated the ozone production rate by 33 % and 39 % during the LAM and OCM periods, respectively, while the nitric acid and sulfuric acid formation rates were 52 % and 35 % higher, respectively. The simulated daytime HONO and ozone concentrations were reduced to a low level (~70 ppt and ~35 ppb) without the HONO constraint. This work challenges the conventional recognition of the MBL in a complex atmosphere. For coastal cities, the particularity of the HONO chemistry in the MBL tends to influence the ozone-sensitive system and eventually magnifies the background ozone. Therefore, the promotion of oxidation by elevated precursor concentrations is worth considering when formulating emission reduction policies.

193. Development of multi-channel whole-air sampling equipment onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle for investigating volatile organic compounds' vertical distribution in the planetary boundary layer

Abstract

To achieve near-continuous vertical observations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), multi-channel whole-air sampling equipment onboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform was developed in this study. The equipment consists of a multi-position solenoid valve and specially designed lightweight quartz sampling canisters. The canisters have little adsorption loss of VOCs and good inter-canister reproducibility. The 7 d recovery test shows that most VOC species (97 %) had a 1-week decay within 20 %. Online instruments for measuring O3, NO2, CO, SO2, and meteorological parameters are also integrated into the UAV platform. During one take-off and landing, the UAV platform can reach 800 m above the ground within 40 min and take whole-air samples at six heights. Vertical profiles of VOCs and trace gases during the evolution of the PBL in south-western China are successfully obtained by deploying the newly developed UAV system.

196. Energy multi-scale method to analyze the scale effect of soil particles

Abstract

As a common geological material, soil is a key aspect of construction engineering. Soil has typical multi-scale characteristics, but current multi-scale methods analyze these characteristics only in regard to geometric space. More exploration of the coupling influence mechanism of the basic properties of particles on the microstructure and macroscopic properties of soil is needed. This study analyzed the influence of geometric scale and mineral composition on the surface energy of particles at the microscopic level for development of the energy multi-scale method. Experiments were performed to determine the influence of mineral composition and particle size on the plasticity index (Ip) of the soil, and experimental results are discussed and interpreted quantitatively using the energy multi-scale method. The conclusions derived from this work are as follows: 1) the mineral composition and particle size of the soil can cause interface and surface effects; 2) the comprehensive ratio of micro-force to weight (CRFW) of the particles can be determined using the energy multi-scale method and quantitatively reflects the influence of particle size and mineral composition on the microscopic properties of the soil; and 3) the energy multi-scale method explains the mechanism of the plasticity index of soil and has allowed identification of a new division of soil plasticity. When the CRFW was used as the control index, the plasticity index of the three materials was practically the same, even if the mineral composition and particle sizes of the three materials were different.
