157. Reconfigurable Three-Dimensional Thermal Dome

Abstract

Thermal metamaterial represents a groundbreaking approach to control heat conduction, and, as a crucial component, thermal invisibility is of utmost importance for heat management. Despite the flourishing development of thermal invisibility schemes, they still face two limitations in practical applications. First, objects are typically completely enclosed in traditional cloaks, making them difficult to use and unsuitable for objects with heat sources. Second, although some theoretical proposals have been put forth to change the thermal conductivity of materials to achieve dynamic invisibility, their designs are complex and rigid, making them unsuitable for large-scale use in real three-dimensional (3D) spaces. Here, we propose a concept of a thermal dome to achieve 3D invisibility. Our scheme includes an open functional area, greatly enhancing its usability and applicability. It features a reconfigurable structure, constructed with simple isotropic natural materials, making it suitable for dynamic requirements. The performance of our reconfigurable thermal dome has been confirmed through simulations and experiments, consistent with the theory. The introduction of this concept can greatly advance the development of thermal invisibility technology from theory to engineering and provide inspiration for other physical domains, such as direct current electric fields and magnetic fields.

Abstract

Students can learn about analysis by performing extraction, cleanup, and measurement of capsaicin, using hot peppers. Caution is important in this exercise, and all extraction steps should be done in a hood with gloves on. The extract is analyzed by C-18 reverse-phase HPLC and UV detection at 281 nm. External standardization with authentic standards is used. The mobile phase is 77% methanol and 23% water. Students bring the hottest peppers they know of, noting species and variety, and the group with the hottest, based on capsaicinoid concentration analysis wins a free lunch at a hot-food restaurant. Habanero and Jamaican had the most capsaicin. The active ingredients are capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin.

Abstract

Undergraduate students can learn from a field experiment for measuring exposure to indoor environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Students can examine the real-world problem in cafes, nightclubs and restaurants with personal sampling pumps supplied to each group, one pump for aldehydes and one for nicotine. Common variables can be illustrated. Students are not encouraged be in places they would not otherwise go to, given health problems associated with exposure to ETS, especially for the pregnant or those with allergies. A control location is sampled first.

Abstract

It is important to investigate how to enhance the flow rate of single-file water molecules across nanochannels. To our knowledge, all the existing methods are based on pressure gradients, external point charges or uniform/graded electric fields. Accordingly, these methods are all based on exogenous tools, and thus bring challenges for both energy-saving and miniaturisation. In contrast, here we manage to reveal an endogenously determined mechanism of flow enhancement. On the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate water permeation across a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT A) in the presence of another SWCNT (SWCNT B). We find that the flow rate of the single-file water molecules across SWCNT A is enhanced for the case of unblocked SWCNT B compared with the rate for the case of blocked SWCNT B, and that this flow rate is determined by the separation between the two SWCNTs and the diameter of SWCNT B. Abstract

The periodic interparticle interaction mechanism has been previously proposed for heat management, especially the practical application of thermal transparency. In our mechanism for engineering and manipulating thermal metamaterials, particles are arranged in periodic lattices with symmetric interactions. In this work, we relax the constraints in the previous work and allow rectangle lattice and arbitrary relative positioning between the two types of particles. We use a machine learning-based approach to solve the inverse design problem by training autoencoders to compress the dimensionalities of both the design space and the response space and training a neural network tailored for the inverse design problem. We employ the finite-element method for generating the training set for the neural network and for validating the calculated design parameters for a given thermal transparency problem. 198. Breaking efficiency limit of thermal concentrators by conductivity couplings

Abstract

The concentrating efficiency of a thermal concentrator can be reflected in the ratio of its interior to exterior temperature gradients, which, however, has an upper limit in existing schemes. Here, we manage to break this upper limit by considering the couplings of thermal conductivities and improve the concentrating efficiency of thermal concentrators. For this purpose, we first discuss a monolayer scheme with an isotropic thermal conductivity, which can break the upper limit but is still restricted by its geometric configuration. To go further, we explore another degree of freedom by considering the monolayer scheme with an anisotropic thermal conductivity or by adding the second shell with an isotropic thermal conductivity, thereby making the concentrating efficiency completely free from the geometric configuration. Nevertheless, apparent negative thermal conductivities are required, and we resort to external heat sources realizing the same effect without violating the second law of thermodynamics. Finite-element simulations are performed to confirm the theoretical predictions, and experimental suggestions are also provided to improve feasibility. These results may have potential applications for thermal camouflage and provide guidance to other diffusive systems such as static magnetic fields and dc current fields for achieving similar behaviors.

199. Direct visualization of percolating metal-insulator transition in V2O3using scanning microwave impedance microscopy

Abstract

Using the extensively studied V2O3as a prototype system, we investigate the role of percolation in metal-insulator transition (MIT). We apply scanning microwave impedance microscopy to directly determine the metallic phase fraction pand relate it to the macroscopic conductance G, which shows a sudden jump when preaches the percolation threshold. Interestingly, the conductance Gexhibits a hysteretic behavior against suggesting two different percolating processes upon cooling and warming. Based on our image analysis and model simulation, we ascribe such hysteretic behavior to different domain nucleation and growth processes between cooling and warming, which is likely caused by the decoupled structural and electronic transitions in V2O3during MIT. Our work provides a microscopic view of how the interplay of structural and electronic degrees of freedom affects MIT in strongly correlated systems.
