Abstract

In this paper, we introduce CAIL2019-SCM, Chinese AI and Law 2019 Similar Case Matching dataset. CAIL2019-SCM contains 8,964 triplets of cases published by the Supreme People's Court of China. CAIL2019-SCM focuses on detecting similar cases, and the participants are required to check which two cases are more similar in the triplets. There are 711 teams who participated in this year's competition, and the best team has reached a score of 71.88. We have also implemented several baselines to help researchers better understand this task. 152. Bound states with complex frequencies near the continuum on lossy periodic structures

Abstract

On a lossless periodic dielectric structure sandwiched between two homogeneous media, bound states in the continuum (BICs) with real frequencies and real Bloch wavevectors may exist, and they decay exponentially in the surrounding homogeneous media and do not couple with propagating plane waves with the same frequencies and wavevectors. The BICs are of significant current interest, because they give rise to high-$Q$ resonances when the structure or the Bloch wavevector is slightly perturbed. In this paper, the effect of a small material loss on the BICs is analyzed by a perturbation method and illustrated by numerical results. It is shown that bound states with complex frequencies near the continuum appear, but they behave differently depending on whether the BIC is symmetry-protected or not. The Bloch wavevector of a bound state with a complex frequency can be real if the original BIC is symmetry-protected, and it is usually complex if the original BIC is not symmetry-protected. Our study improves the theoretical understanding on BICs and provides useful insight for their practical applications.

173. Construction of Staphylococcus aureus bioluminescence tracing system based on Antares2

Abstract

Objective To construct a new fusion luciferase-labeled Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) tracing system. Methods An S. aureus tracer strain was constructed by using DNA homologous recombination technique. The gene encoding fusion luciferase Antares2 was knocked in the genome of S. aureus strain USA300 by fusing with the enolase (Eno) encoding gene. The bioluminescence intensity was analyzed by mixing with the tracer strain and different substrates. The suitable tracer/substrate system was selected based on the detection of bioluminescence intensity. The sensitivity of the tracer/substrate system in vitro and in vivo was also evaluated. Results The knock-in plasmid pBT2-eno-antares2 was constructed. After transformed into S. aureus USA300, the Antares2 knock-in strain was screened out. The tracer strain USA300/Eno-Antares2 was identified by DNA sequencing as well as Western blot detection of Eno-Antares2 fusion proteins. Bacterial growth curve and hemolytic activity tests showed comparable results between USA300/Eno-Antares2 tracer strain and its wild-type USA300. USA300/Eno-Antares2 catalyzed substrates diphenylterazine (DTZ), furimazine (FUR), and hydrofurimazine (HFZ) to produce macroscopical bioluminescence. Analysis of different substrates at diverse concentrations revealed that USA300/Eno-Antares2/HFZ system exhibited the best performance. This system enabled reliable bioluminescence tracking of S. aureus with sensitivities of approximately 50 colony forming unit (CFU) in vitro and 100 CFU in vivo. Conclusion S. aureus USA300/Eno-Antares2/HFZ tracing system is a good tool, which can be used for the study of S. aureus infection, colonization, and dissemination.

Abstract

Neutrinos are copiously produced at particle colliders, but no collider neutrino has ever been detected. Colliders, and particularly hadron colliders, produce both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of all flavors at very high energies, and they are therefore highly complementary to those from other sources. FASER, the recently approved Forward Search Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, is ideally located to provide the first detection and study of collider neutrinos. We investigate the prospects for neutrino studies of a proposed component of FASER, FASER$\nu$, a 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m emulsion detector to be placed directly in front of the FASER spectrometer in tunnel TI12. FASER$\nu$ consists of 1000 layers of emulsion films interleaved with 1-mm-thick tungsten plates, with a total tungsten target mass of 1.2 tons. We estimate the neutrino fluxes and interaction rates at FASER$\nu$, describe the FASER$\nu$ detector, and analyze the characteristics of the signals and primary backgrounds. For an integrated luminosity of 150 fb$^{-1}$ to be collected during Run 3 of the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider from 2021-23, and assuming standard model cross sections, approximately 1300 electron neutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASER$\nu$, with mean energies of 600 GeV to 1 TeV, depending on the flavor. Abstract

A generic heavy Higgs has both dim-4 and effective dim-6 interactions with the Standard Model (SM) particles. The former has been the focus of LHC searches in all major Higgs production channels, just as the SM one, but with negative results so far. If the heavy Higgs is connected with Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics at a few TeV scale, its dim-6 operators will play a very important role - they significantly enhance the Higgs momentum, and reduce the SM background in a special phase space corner to a level such that a heavy Higgs emerges, which is not possible with dim-4 operators only. We focus on the associated VH production channel, where the effect of dim-6 operators is the largest and the SM background is the lowest. Main search regions for this type of signal are identified, and substructure variables of boosted jets are employed to enhance the signal from backgrounds. The parameter space of these operators are scanned over, and expected exclusion regions with 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3 ab$^{-1}$ LHC data are shown, if no BSM is present. The strategy given in this paper will shed light on a heavy Higgs which may be otherwise hiding in the present and future LHC data.

Abstract

FASERnu is a proposed small and inexpensive emulsion detector designed todetect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their properties.FASERnu will be located directly in front of FASER, 480 m from the ATLASinteraction point along the beam collision axis in the unused service tunnelTI12. From 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC, roughly 1,300 electronneutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASERnuwith TeV-scale energies. With the ability to observe these interactions,reconstruct their energies, and distinguish flavors, FASERnu will probe theproduction, propagation, and interactions of neutrinos at the highesthuman-made energies ever recorded. The FASERnu detector will be composed of1000 emulsion layers interleaved with tungsten plates. The total volume of theemulsion and tungsten is 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m, and the tungsten target mass is1.2 tonnes. From 2021-23, 7 sets of emulsion layers will be installed, withreplacement roughly every 20-50 1/fb in planned Technical Stops. In thisdocument, we summarize FASERnu's physics goals and discuss the estimates ofneutrino flux and interaction rates. We then describe the FASERnu detector indetail, including plans for assembly, transport, installation, and emulsionreplacement, and procedures for emulsion readout and analyzing the data. Weclose with cost estimates for the detector components and infrastructure workand a timeline for the experiment.

Abstract

In this paper, we give an overview of the Legal Judgment Prediction (LJP) competition at Chinese AI and Law challenge (CAIL2018). This competition focuses on LJP which aims to predict the judgment results according to the given facts. Specifically, in CAIL2018 , we proposed three subtasks of LJP for the contestants, i.e., predicting relevant law articles, charges and prison terms given the fact descriptions. CAIL2018 has attracted several hundreds participants (601 teams, 1, 144 contestants from 269 organizations).
