Complex vector modes, entangled in spin and orbital angular momentum, are opening burgeoning opportunities for a wide variety of applications. Importantly, the flexible manipulation the various properties of such beams will pave the way to novel applications. As such, in this manuscript, we demonstrate a longitudinal spin-orbit separation of complex vector modes propagating in free space. To achieve this we employed the recently demonstrated circular Airy Gaussian vortex vector (CAGVV) modes, which feature a self-focusing property. More precisely, by properly manipulating the intrinsic parameters of CAGVV modes, the strong coupling between the two constituting orthogonal components of CAGVV mode undergo a spin-orbit separation along the propagation direction namely, while one polarisation component, focuses at a specific plane, the other focuses at a different plane. Such spin-orbit separation, which we demonstrated by numerical simulations and corroborated experimentally, can be adjusted on-demand by simply changing the initial parameters of CAGVV modes. Our findings will be of great relevance, for example in optical tweezers, to manipulate micro- or nano-particles at two different parallel planes.

We revisit the classical change propagation framework for query evaluation under updates. The standard framework takes a query plan and materializes the intermediate views, which incurs high polynomial costs in both space and time, with the join operator being the culprit. In this paper, we propose a new change propagation framework without joins, thus naturally avoiding this polynomial blowup. Meanwhile, we show that the new framework still supports constant-delay enumeration of both the deltas and the full query results, the same as in the standard framework. Furthermore, we provide a quantitative analysis of its update cost, which not only recovers many recent theoretical results on the problem, but also yields an effective approach to optimizing the query plan. The new framework is also easy to be integrated into an existing streaming database system. Integrated photonics provides a promising platform for quantum key distribution (QKD) system in terms of miniaturization, robustness and scalability. Tremendous QKD works based on integrated photonics have been reported. Nonetheless, most current chip-based QKD implementations require additional off-chip hardware to demodulate quantum states or perform auxiliary tasks such as time synchronization and polarization basis tracking. Here, we report a demonstration of resource-efficient chip-based BB84 QKD with a silicon-based encoder and decoder. In our scheme, the time synchronization and polarization compensation are implemented relying on the preparation and measurement of the quantum states generated by on-chip devices, thus no need additional hardware. The experimental tests show that our scheme is highly stable with a low intrinsic QBER of $0.50\pm 0.02\%$ in a 6-h continuous run. Furthermore, over a commercial fiber channel up to 150 km, the system enables realizing secure key distribution at a rate of 866 bps. Silicon-based polarization-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD) has been widely studied, owing to its low cost and robustness. However, prior studies have utilized off-chip devices to demodulate the quantum states or perform polarization compensation, given the difficulty of fabricating polarized independent components on the chip. In this paper, we propose a fully chip-based decoder for polarization-encoding QKD. The chip realizes a polarization state analyzer and compensates for the BB84 protocol without requiring additional hardware. It is based on a polarization-to-path conversion method that uses a polarization splitter-rotator. The chip was fabricated using a standard silicon photonics foundry; it has a compact design and is suitable for mass production. In the experimental stability test, an average quantum bit error rate of $0.56\%$ was achieved through continuous operation for 10 h without any polarization feedback. Furthermore, using the developed feedback algorithm, the chip enabled the automatic compensation of the fiber polarization drift, which was emulated by a random fiber polarization scrambler. In the case of the QKD demonstration, we obtained a finite-key secret rate of 240 bps over a fiber spool of 100 km. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia with serious health consequences if not detected and treated early. Detecting AF using wearable devices with photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors and deep neural networks has demonstrated some success using proprietary algorithms in commercial solutions. However, further advancement of this paradigm of continuous AF detection in ambulatory settings, towards a population-wide screening use case, still faces several challenges, one of which is the lack of large-scale labeled training data. To address this challenge, in this study, we propose to leverage AF alarms from bedside patient monitors to label concurrent PPG signals, resulting in the largest PPG-AF dataset so far (8.5M 30-second records from 24100 patients) and demonstrating a practical approach to build large labeled PPG datasets. Furthermore, we recognize that the AF labels thus obtained contain errors because of false AF alarms generated from imperfect built-in algorithms from bedside monitors. Dealing with label noise with unknown distribution characteristics in this case requires advanced algorithms. We, therefore, introduce and open source a novel loss design, the cluster membership consistency (CMC) loss, to mitigate label errors. By comparing CMC with state-of-the-art methods selected from a noisy label competition, we demonstrate its superiority in multiple aspects including handling label noise in PPG data, resilience to poor-quality signals, and computational efficiency.

Quantum theory allows information to flow through a single device in a coherent superposition of two opposite directions, resulting into situations where the input-output direction is indefinite. Here we introduce a theoretical method to witness input-output indefiniteness in a single quantum device, and we experimentally demonstrate it by constructing a photonic setup that exhibits input-output indefiniteness with a statistical significance exceeding 69 standard deviations. Our results provide a way to characterize input-output indefiniteness as a resource for quantum information and photonic quantum technologies and enable table-top simulations of hypothetical scenarios exhibiting quantum indefiniteness in the direction of time., Comment: 5 + 18 pages, 11 figures

While the dominant magnetic interaction in La$_2$CuO$_4$ is superexchange between nearest-neighbor Cu moments, the pinning of the spin direction depends on weak anisotropic effects associated with spin-orbit coupling. The symmetry of the octahedral tilt pattern allows an out-of-plane canting of the Cu spins, which is compensated by an opposite canting in nearest-neighbor layers. A strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the planes can alter the spin canting pattern to induce a weak ferromagnetic phase. In light of recent evidence that the lattice symmetry is lower than originally assumed, we take a new look at the nature of the field-induced spin-rotation transition. Comparing low-temperature neutron diffraction intensities for several magnetic Bragg peaks measured in fields of 0 and 14 T, we find that a better fit is provided by a model in which spins rotate within both neighboring planes but by different amounts, resulting in a noncollinear configuration. Complex vector modes represent a general state of light nonseparable in their spatial and polarization degrees of freedom, which have inspired a wide variety of novel applications and phenomena, such as their unexpected propagation behaviour. For example, they can propagate describing periodic polarization transitions, changing from one vector beam to another. Here, we put forward a novel class of vector modes with the capability to experience an abruptly autofocusing behaviour. To achieve such beams, we encode the spatial degree of freedom in the Circular Airy Gaussian vortex (CAGV) beams. We demonstrate the experimental generation of arbitrary CAGV vector beams and evince some of their properties, such as a rotation of intermodal phase. We anticipate that the fascinating properties of theses modes will prompt the development of novel applications associated to their autofocusing behaviour and polarization distribution.

The b-factories, such as BelleII, BarBar and LHCb, emphasize the increasing importance of exotic hadron research. In this paper, we discuss the possible production of singly anti-charmed pentaquark states $\bar{c}q qqq$ from $B$ mesons in the b-factory under SU(3) symmetry analysis. Discussions of both possibilities have been driven by the hypothesis that the pentaquark state considered in this work, known as the lowest lying state $P_{\bar c}$, could be bound or unbound. We find the golden channels for the production of the pentaquark ground states, such as $B^0 \to {P}_{\bar{c}sudu}^{(\prime) 0}\Sigma^0$. We further estimate the branching ratios for the production of the ground states $P_{\bar c}$ from $B$ meson decays. Thus, multiple channels are available for experiments, which may remove certain obstacles to the discovery of new pentaquark states., Comment: 17 pages; 1 figures; 6 tables

Object detectors are vital to many modern computer vision applications. However, even state-of-the-art object detectors are not perfect. On two images that look similar to human eyes, the same detector can make different predictions because of small image distortions like camera sensor noise and lighting changes. This problem is called inconsistency. Existing accuracy metrics do not properly account for inconsistency, and similar work in this area only targets improvements on artificial image distortions. Therefore, we propose a method to use non-artificial video frames to measure object detection consistency over time, across frames. Using this method, we show that the consistency of modern object detectors ranges from 83.2% to 97.1% on different video datasets from the Multiple Object Tracking Challenge. We conclude by showing that applying image distortion corrections like .WEBP Image Compression and Unsharp Masking can improve consistency by as much as 5.1%, with no loss in accuracy.

Computer vision is often performed using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNNs are compute-intensive and challenging to deploy on power-contrained systems such as mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. CNNs are compute-intensive because they indiscriminately compute many features on all pixels of the input image. We observe that, given a computer vision task, images often contain pixels that are irrelevant to the task. For example, if the task is looking for cars, pixels in the sky are not very useful. Therefore, we propose that a CNN be modified to only operate on relevant pixels to save computation and energy. We propose a method to study three popular computer vision datasets, finding that 48% of pixels are irrelevant. We also propose the focused convolution to modify a CNN's convolutional layers to reject the pixels that are marked irrelevant. On an embedded device, we observe no loss in accuracy, while inference latency, energy consumption, and multiply-add count are all reduced by about 45%.

Optical interferometers are pillars of modern precision metrology, but their resolution is limited by the wavelength of the light source, which cannot be infinitely reduced. Magically, this limitation can be circumvented by using an entangled multiphoton source because interference produced by an N-photon amplitude features a reduced de Broglie wavelength {\lambda}/N. However, the extremely low efficiency in multiphoton state generation and coincidence counts actually negates the potential of using multiphoton states in practical measurements. Here, we demonstrate a novel interferometric technique based on structured nonlinear optics, i.e., parametric upconversion of a structured beam, capable of superresolution measurement in real time. The main principle relies in that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) state and associated intramodal phase within the structured beam are both continuously multiplied in cascading upconversion to mimic the superresolved phase evolution of a multiphoton amplitude. Owing to the use of bright sensing beams and OAM mode projection, up to a 12-photon de Broglie wavelength with almost perfect visibility is observed in real time and, importantly, by using only a low-cost detector. Our results open the door to real-time superresolution interferometric metrology and provide a promising way toward multiphoton superiority in practical applications.

We present the general Hardy-like quantum pigeonhole paradoxes for \textit{n}-particle states, and find that each of such paradoxes can be simply associated to an un-colorable solution of a specific vertex-coloring problem induced from the projected-coloring graph (a kind of unconventional graph). Besides, as a special kind of Hardy's paradox, several kinds of Hardy-like quantum pigeonhole paradoxes can even give rise to higher success probability in demonstrating the conflict between quantum mechanics and local or noncontextual realism than the previous Hardy's paradoxes. Moreover, not only multi-qubit states, but high-dimensional states can exhibit the paradoxes. In contrast to only one type of contradiction presented in the original quantum pigeonhole paradox, two kinds of three-qubit projected-coloring graph states as the minimal illustration are discussed in our work, and an optical experiment to verify such stronger paradox is performed. This quantum paradox provides innovative thoughts and methods in exploring new types of stronger multi-party quantum nonlocality and may have potential applications in multi-party untrusted communications and device-independent random number generation., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

A recent Little-Parks experiment on Kagome-structured superconductor CsV_3Sb_5 demonstrated remarkable resistance oscillations with period \phi0/3=hc/6e. Here, we perform analysis based on a theory involving three 2e superconductivity (SC) order parameters associated with the three reciprocal lattice vectors which connect M points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. In a ring geometry we unveil that, as a series of metastable states, phase of one SC order parameter winds 2\pi more or less than the other two ones around the ring, which yields local free energy minima at integer multiples of \phi0/3. Intriguingly, the ground-state degeneracy associated with a Z_2 chirality is crucial, and the Higgs-Leggett mechanism stabilizes domain walls (DW) between chiral domains. At low temperatures DW are expelled from the system resulting in free energy minima only at integer multiples of \phi_0. Based on the idea that there is no side channel in the vacuum state, the side-channel-free quantum key distribution (SCFQKD) protocol was proposed, which is immune to all attacks in the source side-channel space and all attacks in the detectors. In the original SCFQKD protocol, an important assumption is that Alice and Bob can produce the perfect vacuum pulses. But due to the finite extinction ratio of the intensity modulators, the perfect vacuum pulse is impossible in practice. In this paper, we solve this problem and make the quantum key distribution side-channel secure with real source device which does not emit perfect vacuum pulses. Our conclusion only depends on the upper bounds of the intensities of the sources. No other assumptions such as stable sources and stable side channels are needed. The numerical results show that, comparing with the results of SCFQKD protocol with perfect vacuum sources, the key rates and secure distance are only slightly decreased if the upper bound of the intensity of the imperfect vacuum source is less than $10^{-8}$ which can be achieved in experiment by two-stage intensity modulator. We also show that the two-way classical communication can be used to the data post-processing of SCFQKD protocol to improve the key rate. Specially, the active odd-parity pairing method can improve the key rates in all distances by about two times and the secure distance by about 40 km. Give that the side channel security based on imperfect vacuum, this work makes it possible to realize side channel secure QKD with real devices.

We propose to adopt redundant space such as polarization mode in the sending-or-not-sending Twin-Field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) in the Fock space. With the help of redundant space such as photon polarization, we can post-select events according to the outcome of the observation to the additional quantity. This compresses the bit-flip error rate in the post-selected events of the SNS protocol. The calculation shows that the method using redundant space can greatly improve the performance in practical TF-QKD, especially when the total number of pulses is small., Comment: This manuscript has been accepted for publication as a Regular Article in Physical Review Research

The microscopic understanding of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent complexity of crystal structures in these materials. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study an electron-doped copper oxide compound Sr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CuO$_2$ that has only bare cations separating the CuO$_2$ planes and thus the simplest infinite-layer structure among all cuprate superconductors. Tunneling conductance spectra of the major CuO$_2$ planes in the superconducting state revealed direct evidence for a nodeless pairing gap, regardless of variation of its magnitude with the local doping of trivalent neodymium. Furthermore, three distinct bosonic modes are observed as multiple peak-dip-hump features outside the superconducting gaps and their respective energies depend little on the spatially varying gaps. Along with the bosonic modes with energies identical to those of the external, bending and stretching phonons of copper oxides, our findings indicate their origin from lattice vibrations rather than spin excitations., Comment: 16 Pages, 4 figures, 5 supplemental figures

We present the method of decoy-state analysis after bit-flip error correction and using confidential observed numbers. Taking this tool we then construct a universal approach to sending-or-not-sending (SNS) protocol of twin-field quantum key distribution. In this improved protocol, the code bits are not limited to heralded events in time windows participated by pulses of intensity $\mu_z$ and vacuum. All kinds of heralded events can be used for code bits to distill the final keys. The number of intensities (3 or 4) and the kinds of heralded events for code bits are automatically chosen by the key rate optimization itself. Numerical simulation shows that the key rate rises drastically in typical settings, up to 80\% improvement compared with the prior results. Also, larger intensity value can be used for decoy pulses. This makes the protocol more robust in practical experiments.

A recent result from Fermilab suggests that the measured W-boson mass deviates from the prediction of the Standard Model (SM) with a significance of $>7\sigma$, and there may exist new physics beyond the SM. It is proposed that the inert two Higgs doublet model (i2HDM) can well explain the new W-boson mass. Meanwhile, the lightest neutral scalar $S$ in the i2HDM can be stable and play the role of dark matter with a preferred dark matter mass of $\sim 54-74$ GeV. It is also found that part of the parameter space of this model can explain both the Galactic center GeV gamma-ray excess detected by $Fermi$-LAT and the GeV antiproton excess detected by AMS-02 through a $SS\rightarrow WW^*$ annihilation. In this paper, we aim to test the possible common i2HDM origin of the three anomaly/excesses using the $Fermi$-LAT observations of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. We perform single and stacking analyses on 19 dSphs that have J-factor measurements. We find that our upper limits are below the favored parameters and seems to be able to exclude the possibility of a common origin of the three anomaly/excesses. However, because the J-factor measurements include relatively large uncertainties, which come from the measurements of stellar kinematics, whether this model could be reliably excluded needs to be further confirmed by future observations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, updated to match the accepted version

We use hyper-entanglement to experimentally realize deterministic entanglement swapping based on quantum Elegant Joint Measurements. These are joint projections of two qubits onto highly symmetric, iso-entangled, bases. We report measurement fidelities no smaller than $97.4\%$. We showcase the applications of these measurements by using the entanglement swapping procedure to demonstrate quantum correlations in the form of proof-of-principle violations of both bilocal Bell inequalities and more stringent correlation criteria corresponding to full network nonlocality. Our results are a foray into entangled measurements and nonlocality beyond the paradigmatic Bell state measurement and they show the relevance of more general measurements in entanglement swapping scenarios.

Certifying individual quantum devices with minimal assumptions is crucial for the development of quantum technologies. Here, we investigate how to leverage single-system contextuality to realize self-testing. We develop a robust self-testing protocol based on the simplest contextuality witness for the simplest contextual quantum system, the Klyachko-Can-Binicio\u{g}lu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality for the qutrit. We establish a lower bound on the fidelity of the state and the measurements (to an ideal configuration) as a function of the value of the witness under a pragmatic assumption on the measurements we call the KCBS orthogonality condition. We apply the method in an experiment with randomly chosen measurements on a single trapped $^{40}{\rm Ca}^+$ and near-perfect detection efficiency. The observed statistics allow us to self-test the system and provide the first experimental demonstration of quantum self-testing of a single system. Rings and gaps are commonly observed in the dust continuum emission of young stellar disks. Previous studies have shown that substructures naturally develop in the weakly ionized gas of magnetized, non-ideal MHD disks. The gas rings are expected to trap large mm/cm-sized grains through pressure gradient-induced radial dust-gas drift. Using 2D (axisymmetric) MHD simulations that include ambipolar diffusion and dust grains of three representative sizes (1~mm, 3.3~mm, and 1~cm), we show that the grains indeed tend to drift radially relative to the gas towards the centers of the gas rings, at speeds much higher than in a smooth disk because of steeper pressure gradients. However, their spatial distribution is primarily controlled by meridional gas motions, which are typically much faster than the dust-gas drift. In particular, the grains that have settled near the midplane are carried rapidly inwards by a fast accretion stream to the inner edges of the gas rings, where they are lifted up by the gas flows diverted away from the midplane by a strong poloidal magnetic field. The flow pattern in our simulation provides an attractive explanation for the meridional flows recently inferred in HD 163296 and other disks, including both "collapsing" regions where the gas near the disk surface converges towards the midplane and a disk wind. A standard-form Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa(WKI) type integrable hierarchy is derived from a corresponding matrix spectral problem associated with the Lie algebra sl(2, R). Each equation in the resulting hierarchy has a bi-Hamiltonian structure furnished by the trace identity. Then, the higher grading affine algebraic construction of some special cases is proposed. We also show that eneralized short pulse equation arises naturally from the negative WKI flow.
