Search

We discuss construction and observational properties of wormholes obtained by connecting two Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes with distinct mass and charge parameters. These objects are spherically symmetric, but not reflection-symmetric, as the connected spacetimes differ. The reflection-asymmetric wormholes may reflect a significant fraction of the infalling radiation back to the spacetime of its origin. We interpret this effect in a simple framework of the effective photon potential. Depending on the model parameters, image of such a wormhole seen by a distant observer (its "shadow") may contain a photon ring formed on the observer's side, photon ring formed on the other side of the wormhole, or both photon rings. These unique topological features would allow us to firmly distinguish this class of objects from Kerr black holes using radioastronomical observations., Comment: 9 pages, accepted in Phys. Rev. D

It is proved that for $n \geq 6$, the number of perfect matchings in a simple connected cubic graph on $2n$ vertices is at most $4 f_{n-1}$, with $f_n$ being the $n$-th Fibonacci number. The unique extremal graph is characterized as well. In addition, it is shown that the number of perfect matchings in any cubic graph $G$ equals the expected value of a random variable defined on all $2$-colorings of edges of $G$. We develop a non-perturbative functional framework for computing real-time correlation functions in strongly correlated systems. The framework is based on the spectral representation of correlation functions and dimensional regularisation. Therefore, the non-perturbative spectral renormalisation setup here respects all symmetries of the theories at hand. In particular this includes space-time symmetries as well as internal symmetries such as chiral symmetry, and gauge symmetries. Spectral renormalisation can be applied within general functional approaches such as the functional renormalisation group, Dyson-Schwinger equations, and two- or $n$-particle irreducible approaches. As an application we compute the full, non-perturbative, spectral function of the scalar field in the $\phi^4$-theory in $2+1$ dimensions from spectral Dyson-Schwinger equations. We report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO3)1/(SrTiO3)1. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Neel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Neel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperatures far above the N\'eel transition. These behaviors are characteristics of the Slater-Mott crossover regime, providing a unique experimental model system of the spin-half Hubbard Hamiltonian with a tunable intermediate coupling strength.

Anomaly detection is a method for discovering unusual and suspicious behavior. In many real-world scenarios, the examined events can be directly linked to the actions of an adversary, such as attacks on computer networks or frauds in financial operations. While the defender wants to discover such malicious behavior, the attacker seeks to accomplish their goal (e.g., exfiltrating data) while avoiding the detection. To this end, anomaly detectors have been used in a game-theoretic framework that captures these goals of a two-player competition. We extend the existing models to more realistic settings by (1) allowing both players to have continuous action spaces and by assuming that (2) the defender cannot perfectly observe the action of the attacker. We propose two algorithms for solving such games -- a direct extension of existing algorithms based on discretizing the feature space and linear programming and the second algorithm based on constrained learning. Experiments show that both algorithms are applicable for cases with low feature space dimensions but the learning-based method produces less exploitable strategies and it is scalable to higher dimensions. Moreover, we use real-world data to compare our approaches with existing classifiers in a data-exfiltration scenario via the DNS channel. Automatic evaluation of the goodness of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has been a challenge for the field of machine learning. In this work, we propose a distance complementary to existing measures: Topology Distance (TD), the main idea behind which is to compare the geometric and topological features of the latent manifold of real data with those of generated data. More specifically, we build Vietoris-Rips complex on image features, and define TD based on the differences in persistent-homology groups of the two manifolds. We compare TD with the most commonly used and relevant measures in the field, including Inception Score (IS), Frechet Inception Distance (FID), Kernel Inception Distance (KID) and Geometry Score (GS), in a range of experiments on various datasets. We demonstrate the unique advantage and superiority of our proposed approach over the aforementioned metrics. A combination of our empirical results and the theoretical argument we propose in favour of TD, strongly supports the claim that TD is a powerful candidate metric that researchers can employ when aiming to automatically evaluate the goodness of GANs' learning., Comment: Submitted to ICML 2020; 12 pages, 7 figures

The paper investigates strategies for expansion of active set that can be employed by the MPRGP algorithm. The standard MPRGP expansion uses a projected line search in the free gradient direction with a fixed step length. Such a scheme is often too slow to identify the active set, requiring a large number of expansions. We propose to use adaptive step lengths based on the current gradient, which guarantees the decrease of the unconstrained cost function with different gradient-based search directions. Moreover, we also propose expanding the active set by projecting the optimal step for the unconstrained minimization. Numerical experiments demonstrate the benefits of our expansion step modifications on two benchmarks -- contact problem of linear elasticity solved by TFETI and machine learning problems of SVM type, both implemented in PERMON toolbox.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has become a standard technique to map localized surface plasmon resonances with a nanometer spatial and a sufficient energy resolution over the last 15 years. However, no experimental work discussing the influence of experimental conditions during the measurement has been published up to now. We present an experimental study of the influence of the primary beam energy and the collection semi-angle on the plasmon resonances measurement by STEM-EELS. To explore the influence of these two experimental parameters we study a series of gold rods and gold bow-tie and diabolo antennas. We discuss the impact on experimental characteristics which are important for successful detection of the plasmon peak in EELS, namely: the intensity of plasmonic signal, the signal to background ratio, and the signal to zero-loss peak ratio. We show that the best results are obtained using a medium primary beam energy, in our case 120 keV, and an arbitrary collection semi-angle, as it is not a critical parameter at this primary beam energy. Our instructive overview will help microscopists in the field of plasmonics to arrange their experiments.

Gradient polyconvex materials are nonsimple materials where we do not assume smoothness of the elastic strain but instead regularity of minors of the strain is required. This allows for a larger class of admissible deformations than in the case of second-grade materials. We describe a possible implementation of gradient polyconvex elastic energies. Besides, a new geometric interpretation of gradient-polyconvexity is given and it is compared with standard second-grade materials. Finally, we demonstrate application of the proposed approach using two different models, namely, a St.-Venant Kirchhoff material and a double well stored energy density.

5d iridates have shown vast emergent phenomena due to a strong interplay among its lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom, because of which the potential in spintronic application of the thin-film form is highly leveraged. Here we have epitaxially stabilized perovskite SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$ on [001] SrTiO$_3$ substrates through pulsed laser deposition and systematically characterized the structural, electronic and magnetic properties. Physical properties measurements unravel an insulating ground state with a weak ferromagnetism in the compressively strained epitaxial film. The octahedral rotation pattern is identified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resolving a mix of $a^+b^-c^-$ and $a^-b^+c^-$ domains. X-ray magnetic resonant scattering directly demonstrates a G-type antiferromagnetic structure of the magnetic order and the spin canting nature of the weak ferromagnetism., Comment: Accepted by Physical Review Material

The success of automated reasoning techniques over large natural-language texts heavily relies on a fine-grained analysis of natural language assumptions. While there is a common agreement that the analysis should be hyperintensional, most of the automatic reasoning systems are still based on an intensional logic, at the best. In this paper, we introduce the system of reasoning based on a fine-grained, hyperintensional analysis. To this end we apply Tichy's Transparent Intensional Logic (TIL) with its procedural semantics. TIL is a higher-order, hyperintensional logic of partial functions, in particular apt for a fine-grained natural-language analysis. Within TIL we recognise three kinds of context, namely extensional, intensional and hyperintensional, in which a particular natural-language term, or rather its meaning, can occur. We revisit plasmonic modes in nanoparticle dimers with conductive or insulating junction resulting in conductive or capacitive coupling. In our study which combines electron energy loss spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, and numerical simulations, we show coexistence of strongly and weakly hybridized modes. While the properties of the former ones strongly depend on the nature of the junction, the properties of the latter ones are nearly unaffected. This opens up a prospect for independent engineering of different plasmonic modes in a single plasmonic antenna. In addition, we show that Babinet's principle allows to engineer the near field of plasmonic modes independent of their energy. Finally, we demonstrate that combined electron energy loss imaging of a plasmonic antenna and its Babinet-complementary counterpart allows to reconstruct the distribution of both electric and magnetic near fields of localised plasmonic resonances supported by the antenna as well as charge and current antinodes of related charge oscillations.

Ruddlesden-popper type Srn+1IrnO3n+1 compound is a major focus of condensed matter physics where the subtle balance between electron-electron correlation, spin-orbit interaction and crystal field effect brings a host of emergent phenomena. While it is understandable that a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state with an easy-plane anisotropy is developed in Sr2IrO4 as the 2D limit of the series, it is intriguing that bilayer Sr3Ir2O7, with slightly higher effective dimensionality, stabilizes c-axis collinear antiferromagnetism. This also renders Sr3Ir2O7 as a unique playground to study exotic physics near a critical spin transition point. However, the epitaxial growth of the Sr3Ir2O7 is still a challenging task because of the narrow growth window. In our research, we have studied the thermodynamic process during synthesis of Sr3Ir2O7 thin films. We successfully expanded the synthesis window by mapping out the relation between the thin film sample crystal structure and gas pressure. Plasmonic nanoparticles from unconventional materials can improve or even bring some novel functionalities into the disciplines inherently related to plasmonics such as photochemistry or (spectro)electrochemistry. They can, for example, catalyze various chemical reactions or act as nanoelectrodes and optical transducers in various applications. Silver amalgam is the perfect example of such an unconventional plasmonic material, albeit it is well-known in the field of electrochemistry for its wide cathodic potential window and strong adsorption affinity of biomolecules to its surface. In this study, we investigate in detail the optical properties of nanoparticles and microparticles made from silver amalgam and correlate their plasmonic resonances with their morphology. We use optical spectroscopy techniques on the ensemble level and electron energy loss spectroscopy on the single-particle level to demonstrate the extremely wide spectral range covered by the silver amalgam localized plasmonic resonances, ranging from ultraviolet all the way to the mid-infrared wavelengths. Our results establish silver amalgam as a suitable material for introduction of plasmonic functionalities into photochemical and spectroelectrochemical systems, where the plasmonic enhancement of electromagnetic fields and light emission processes could synergistically meet with the superior electrochemical characteristics of mercury.

This paper describes the design and development of specific software tools used during the creation of Family Names in Britain and Ireland (FaNBI) research project, started by the University of the West of England in 2010 and finished successfully in 2016. This paper describes a new system for semi-automatically building, extending and managing a terminological thesaurus---a multilingual terminology dictionary enriched with relationships between the terms themselves to form a thesaurus. The system allows to radically enhance the workflow of current terminology expert groups, where most of the editing decisions still come from introspection. The presented system supplements the lexicographic process with natural language processing techniques, which are seamlessly integrated to the thesaurus editing environment. The system's methodology and the resulting thesaurus are closely connected to new domain corpora in the six languages involved. They are used for term usage examples as well as for the automatic extraction of new candidate terms. The terminological thesaurus is now accessible via a web-based application, which a) presents rich detailed information on each term, b) visualizes term relations, and c) displays real-life usage examples of the term in the domain-related documents and in the context-based similar terms. Furthermore, the specialized corpora are used to detect candidate translations of terms from the central language (Czech) to the other languages (English, French, German, Russian and Slovak) as well as to detect broader Czech terms, which help to place new terms in the actual thesaurus hierarchy. Value methods for solving stochastic games with partial observability model the uncertainty about states of the game as a probability distribution over possible states. The dimension of this belief space is the number of states. For many practical problems, for example in security, there are exponentially many possible states which causes an insufficient scalability of algorithms for real-world problems. To this end, we propose an abstraction technique that addresses this issue of the curse of dimensionality by projecting high-dimensional beliefs to characteristic vectors of significantly lower dimension (e.g., marginal probabilities). Our two main contributions are (1) novel compact representation of the uncertainty in partially observable stochastic games and (2) novel algorithm based on this compact representation that is based on existing state-of-the-art algorithms for solving stochastic games with partial observability. Experimental evaluation confirms that the new algorithm over the compact representation dramatically increases the scalability compared to the state of the art.

Cathodoluminescence has attracted interest in scanning transmission electron microscopy since the advent of commercial available detection systems with high efficiency, like the Gatan Vulcan or the Attolight M\"onch system. In this work we discuss light emission caused by high-energy electron beams when traversing a semiconducting specimen. We find that it is impossible to directly interpret the spectrum of the emitted light to the inter-band transitions excited by the electron beam, because the Cerenkov effect and the related light guiding modes as well as transition radiation is altering the spectra. Total inner reflection and subsequent interference effects are changing the spectral shape dependent on the sample shape and geometry, sample thickness, and beam energy, respectively. A recent study of the X-ray source XMMUJ134736.6+173403 has revealed a strong quasi-periodic modulation of the X-ray flux. The observation of two quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) that occur on a daily timescale and exhibit a 3:1 frequency ratio strongly supports the evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus black hole (AGN BH). Assuming the orbital origin of QPOs we calculate the upper and lower limit on AGN BH mass M arriving at $M\approx 10^7-10^9M_{\odot}$. Comparing that to mass estimates of other sources, MMUJ134736.6+173403 appears to be the most massive source with commensurable QPO frequencies, and its mass represents the current observational upper limit on AGN BH mass based on QPO observations. We note it will be crucial for the falsification of particular resonance models of QPOs whether only single QPO with frequency that completes the harmonic sequence 3:2:1 is found in this source, or whether there is a new different pair of QPOs with frequencies in the 3:2 ratio. We theoretically study plasmonic antennas featuring areas of extremely concentrated electric or magnetic field, known as hot spots. We combine two types of electric-magnetic complementarity to increase the degree of freedom for the design of the antennas: bow-tie and diabolo duality and Babinet's principle. We evaluate the figures of merit for different plasmon-enhanced optical spectroscopy methods: field enhancement, decay rate enhancement, and quality factor of the plasmon resonances. The role of Babinet's principle in interchanging electric and magnetic field hot spots and its consequences for practical antenna design are discussed. In particular, diabolo antennas exhibit slightly better performance than bow-ties in terms of larger field enhancement and larger Q factor. For specific resonance frequency, diabolo antennas are considerably smaller than bow-ties which makes them favourable for the integration into more complex devices but also makes their fabrication more demanding in terms of spatial resolution. Finally, we propose Babinet-type dimer antenna featuring electromagnetic hot spot with both the electric and magnetic field components treated on equal footing.

Mono-X searches are standard dark matter search strategies at the LHC. First, we show how in the case of initial state radiation they essentially collapse to mono-jet searches. Second, we systematically study mono-X signatures from decays of heavier dark matter states. Direct detection constraints strongly limit our MSSM expectations, but largely vanish for mono-Z and mono-Higgs signals once we include light NMSSM mediators. A fundamental difference between antiferromagnets and ferromagnets is the lack of linear coupling to a uniform magnetic field due to the staggered order parameter. Such coupling is possible via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction but at the expense of reduced antiferromagnetic (AFM) susceptibility due to the canting-induced spin anisotropy. We solve this long-standing problem with a top-down approach that utilizes spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a hidden SU(2) symmetry. We demonstrate giant AFM responses to sub-Tesla external fields by exploiting the extremely strong two-dimensional critical fluctuations preserved under a symmetry-invariant exchange anisotropy, which is built into a square-lattice artificially synthesized as a superlattice of SrIrO3 and SrTiO3. The observed field-induced logarithmic increase of the ordering temperature enables highly efficient control of the AFM order. As antiferromagnets promise to afford switching speed and storage security far beyond ferromagnets, our symmetry-invariant approach unleashes the great potential of functional antiferromagnets., Comment: 3 figures

A limiting optical diode is an asymmetric nonlinear device that is bidirectionally transparent at low power, but becomes opaque when illuminated by sufficiently intense light incident from a particular direction. We explore the use of a phase-transition material, vanadium dioxide (VO2), as an active element of limiting optical diodes. The VO2 phase transition can be triggered by optical absorption, resulting in a change in refractive index orders of magnitude larger than what can be achieved with conventional nonlinearities. As a result, a limiting optical diode based on incident-direction-dependent absorption in a VO2 layer can be very thin, and can function at low powers without field enhancement, resulting in broadband operation. We demonstrate a simple thin-film limiting optical diode comprising a transparent substrate, a VO2 film, and a semi-transparent metallic layer. For sufficiently high incident intensity, our proof-of-concept device realizes broadband asymmetric transmission across the near infrared, and is approximately ten times thinner than the free-space wavelength.

Twin-peak quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed in several low-mass X-ray binary systems containing neutron stars (NSs). Timing analysis of X-ray fluxes of more than dozen of such systems reveals remarkable correlations between the frequencies of two characteristic peaks present in the power density spectra. The individual correlations clearly differ, but they roughly follow a common individual pattern. High values of measured QPO frequencies and strong modulation of the X-ray flux both suggest that the observed correlations are connected to orbital motion in the innermost part of an accretion disc. Several attempts to model these correlations with simple geodesic orbital models or phenomenological relations have failed in the past. We find and explore a surprisingly simple analytic relation that reproduces individual correlations for a group of several sources through a single parameter. When an additional free parameter is considered within our relation, it well reproduces the data of a large group of 14 sources. The very existence and form of this simple relation supports the hypothesis of the orbital origin of QPOs and provides the key for further development of QPO models. We propose an operating principle to achieve broadband and highly tunable mode conversion and amplification exploiting inter-modal four wave mixing in a multimode fiber. We address a question whether the observed light curves of X-ray flares originating deep in galactic cores can give us independent constraints on the mass of the central supermassive black hole. To this end we study four brightest flares that have been recorded from Sagittarius A*. They all exhibit an asymmetric shape consistent with a combination of two intrinsically separate peaks that occur at a certain time-delay with respect to each other, and are characterized by their mutual flux ratio and the profile of raising/declining parts. Such asymmetric shapes arise naturally in the scenario of a temporary flash from a source orbiting near a super- massive black hole, at radius of only 10-20 gravitational radii. An interplay of relativistic effects is responsible for the modulation of the observed light curves: Doppler boosting, gravitational redshift, light focusing, and light-travel time delays. We find the flare properties to be in agreement with the simulations (our ray-tracing code sim5lib). The inferred mass for each of the flares comes out in agreement with previous estimates based on orbits of stars; the latter have been observed at radii and over time-scales two orders of magnitude larger than those typical for the X-ray flares, so the two methods are genuinely different. We report on the tuning of magnetic interactions in superlattices composed of single and bilayer SrIrO$_3$ inter-spaced with SrTiO$_3$. Magnetic scattering shows predominately $c$-axis antiferromagnetic orientation of the magnetic moments for the bilayer justifying these systems as viable artificial analogues of the bulk Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates. Magnon gaps are observed in both superlattices, with the magnitude of the gap in the bilayer being reduced to nearly half that in its bulk structural analogue, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We assign this to modifications in the anisotropic exchange driven by bending of the $c$-axis Ir-O-Ir bond and subsequent local environment changes, as detected by x-ray diffraction and modeled using spin wave theory. These findings explain how even subtle structural modulations driven by heterostructuring in iridates are leveraged by spin orbit coupling to drive large changes in the magnetic interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
