Abstract

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is an evolving treatment strategy against human pathogenic microbes such as the Candida species, including the emerging pathogen C. auris. Using a modified EUCAST protocol, the light-enhanced antifungal activity of the natural compound parietin was explored. The photoactivity was evaluated against three separate strains of five yeasts, and its molecular mode of action was analysed via several techniques, i.e., cellular uptake, reactive electrophilic species (RES), and singlet oxygen yield. Under experimental conditions (λ = 428 nm, H = 30 J/cm2 , PI = 30 min), microbial growth was inhibited by more than 90% at parietin concentrations as low as c = 0.156 mg/L (0.55 µM) for C. tropicalis and Cryptococcus neoformans , c = 0.313 mg/L (1.10 µM) for C. auris , c = 0.625 mg/L (2.20 µM) for C. glabrata , and c = 1.250 mg/L (4.40 µM) for C. albicans. Mode-of-action analysis demonstrated fungicidal activity. Parietin targets the cell membrane and induces cell death via ROS-mediated lipid peroxidation after light irradiation. In summary, parietin exhibits light-enhanced fungicidal activity against all Candida species tested (including C. auris) and Cryptococcus neoformans , covering three of the four critical threats on the WHOʼs most recent fungal priority list. Abstract

Numerical association rule mining (NARM) is a popular method under the umbrella of data mining, focused on finding relationships between attributes in transaction databases. Numerical association rules for time series are a new paradigm that extends the applicability of NARM to the domain of time series. Association rule mining algorithms result in numerous rules, the interpretation of which is sometimes not easy for human experts. Therefore, various visualization methods have been developed to improve the explanation results of the rule mining process. This article is a novel contribution to the development of a new visualization method capable of presenting the association rules for time series developed according to the principles of explainable artificial intelligence. The experiments are conducted in the context of smart agriculture (i.e., agricultural time series data), and show the great potential of the proposed visualization method for the future. Abstract

Smart forestry, an innovative approach leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), aims to enhance forest management while minimizing the environmental impact. The efficacy of AI in this domain is contingent upon the availability of extensive, high-quality data, underscoring the pivotal role of sensor-based data acquisition in the digital transformation of forestry. However, the complexity and challenging conditions of forest environments often impede data collection efforts. Achieving the full potential of smart forestry necessitates a comprehensive integration of sensor technologies throughout the process chain, ensuring the production of standardized, high-quality data essential for AI applications. This paper highlights the symbiotic relationship between human expertise and the digital transformation in forestry, particularly under challenging conditions. We emphasize the human-in-the-loop approach, which allows experts to directly influence data generation, enhancing adaptability and effectiveness in diverse scenarios. A critical aspect of this integration is the deployment of autonomous robotic systems in forests, functioning both as data collectors and processing hubs. These systems are instrumental in facilitating sensor integration and generating substantial volumes of quality data. We present our universal sensor platform, detailing our experiences and the critical importance of the initial phase in digital transformation—the generation of comprehensive, high-quality data. Abstract

One of the "hottest" topics in recent information systems and computer science is metadata. Learning Object Metadata (LOM) appears to be a very powerful mechanism for representing metadata, because of the great variety of LOM Objects. This is on of the reasons why the LOM standard is repeatedly cited in projects in the field of eLearning Systems. This multimedia learning related technology could enhance conventional learning systems. Some applications have many possibilities to interpret and use the information of the LOM base schema. One of the disadvantages of the very complex metadata structure is the fact that it is difficult or confusing to determine the relevant elements for a satisfying result. Therefore, a learning system based on the LOM standard is expected to provide an intuitive user interface that supports the user in getting good results. This article describes why metadata is needed, discusses the development from Dublin Core, Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM), and Warwick-Framework to the IEEE LOM, and presents four examples of successfully implemented systems.
