The article, based on the latest literature on the subject, presents selected methodological issues which arise in research following the historical perspective in organizational and management studies. Attention was paid to dilemmas related to the combination of various theoretical approaches in organization and management, as well as the ways of understanding what history is and the crucial methodological principles of historical sciences. The three selected publications based on empirical research - referred in the article - illustrate the thesis on the diversity of research conducted in this area. Their analysis also confirms basic assumptions regarding the nature of the studied phenomena, the used sources, and the methods of their interpretation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Behavioral operations is now an established and fundamental research field dedicated to understanding how the behavior of managers, workers, and customers influences operational decisions and outcomes. Just 20 years ago, behavioral research within operations management was relatively small and dispersed. Manufacturing & Service Operations Management has played an integral role in the field's development since then through its openness to new research questions and methodologies. In this article, we reflect on the research goals pursued in behavioral operations as well as the operational contexts explored. We also share thoughts on promising areas for future research. Over the last 20 years, the journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management (M&SOM) has expanded its original focus to include innovative operations, environmentally sustainable operations, and socially responsible operations. As we celebrate M&SOM's 20th anniversary, this special issue is intended to renew M&SOM's commitment to publish operations management research articles that are relevant, innovative, and rigorous. Well-being is the satisfaction felt by each individual, in relation to what surrounds him, and which refers not only to the material conditions, namely the accumulation of goods and services, but also to safety of each, through which it can be put value on the individual personality. By comparing the budgets of different categories, we retrieve the way they operate after a certain hierarchy of needs, from the most elementary to the least needed. Studying the consumption model is necessary to see human needs at some point in a society. Consumer models make it possible to distribute economic resources optimally in order to improve the quality of life of individuals, groups, communities and the willingness to bring these levels of consumption closer. Uterine clear cell cancer (UCCC) is a rare but aggressive disease. Due to its rarity, large, prospective studies focused on UCCC are exceedingly difficult therefore available data are generally from small, retrospective studies. There is also pertinent information from subsection analysis of larger studies that include UCCC and other histotypes. In 2009, the clinical practice committee of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) published a review on UCCC aimed at guiding management. Since that publication, there have been developments which are relevant to UCCC, these include availability of data from landmark trials regarding adjuvant therapy, increasing utilization of sentinel lymph node approach and availability of immunotherapy as a treatment option. This SGO review is updated with all relevant, published information since 2009 considered clinically important for management of UCCC. In addition, it follows the new SGO's style for this type of publication which includes utilization of the question and answer format. • Updated recommendations for the treatment of UCCC are provided. • Recent results from 3 phase III NRG/GOG trials are incorporated. • Information about immune therapy in women diagnosed with UCCC is included. • Recommendations regarding early stage UCCC treatment are modified. This article analyses sub-dialects of the South-Western Kurzeme region in Latvia. The focus is on the most prominent phonetic, morphological and lexical features of these sub-dialects, and their usage in the 21st century. The sub-dialects of South-Western Kurzeme have many characteristic features found in their phonetics and morphology. In the South-Western Kurzeme sub-dialects, there are native lexemes – words from the ancient Curonian language and also borrowed lexemes, as language contact has been an ongoing fact of life in South-Western Kurzeme. Political decision-makers operate under a constant tension between bureaucratic autonomy on one hand and political control on the other. Extant scholarship rarely analyzes this tension beyond the context of modern states. However, three recent books show that it has a transhistorical relevance. Francis Fukuyama's two volumes on The Origins of Political Order and Political Order and Political Decay analyze the various ways the tension has been addressed in the period before and after the French Revolution. In Democracy's Slaves, Paulin Ismard documents that the tension was relevant even in the context of the direct democracy of Athens in the Classical period. Taking these three books as the point of departure, we show how politicians have attempted to balance autonomy and control in patrimonial, meritocratic, politicized, and neo-patrimonial types of administration. This paper deals with how the legal concept of person is built on an old metaphor related to the theatrical mask --the performance of a role--, and the various interpretations of this notion in Western antiquity and at which other philosophical conceptions have arrived today. Particularly, the objective is to point out that the word is not clear and that, if it is currently linked to the idea of humanity and certain demands, it is due to the semantic evolution of the term. According to the 'French Republican integration pattern' – based on the principle of colour-blind universality – naming people using ethnic or racial references is illegal in the administration's documentation as well as in the census. Yet, aspects of the colonial rights system were adopted into the French Republican ideology, thereby constituting a very specific relationship between nationality and citizenship in the administrative management of colonial natives on French mainland soil. This paper reveals the ambiguities of the Republican ideas when they were implemented by street-level administrators within Lyon's metropolitan area (1950–1970). Examining the administration's documentation in the Archives of the Rhône Department (ARD), this paper demonstrates how the Ministry of the Interior took leadership in the welfare sector, especially in housing and urban policies. Its role and work built upon the roots of institutionalized racism which accompanied the settlement of Algerian populations in France, even after Algeria's independence (1962). By institutionalizing racial treatment, the successive administrations in charge of housing and urban policies within the Lyon metropolitan area have contributed to the legitimization of an ideology of segregation based on opposing aims: on the one hand, the mixing and coexistence of different cultural and ethnic groups, and on the other hand, the adherence to a supposed 'tolerability threshold' using arbitrarily developed quotas for the settlement of Algerians. The present work is dedicated to propose the existence of a Financial Geography, justifying this assertion through the characterization of what has been discussed in the geographic scope on the subject of finance. Thus, based on bibliographic research, we present some of the approaches adopted by the Brazilian geographers when dedicating themselves to this theme and, in sequence, we detail some of the main works dedicated to the theme. Internal migration is one of the most important drivers for reducing poverty and facilitating economic development. However, the factors that affect population mobility within a country, as well as the relationship between internal migration and economic development, are difficult to understand. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the population mobility in Romania, so that one understands the relationship between the economic development and internal migration. In order to achieve this objective, official data provided by the National Institute of Statistics as well as various statistical and econometric techniques (simple regression, entropy) are used. The research led to three major findings: (i) the internal migratory process is characterized by 7 historical periods, highly related to the social, economic and political phenomena that shaped the Romanian history; (ii) economic development of a county and the internal migration inflows are highly dependent; (iii) internal migration flows concentrate towards just four counties: Bucharest, Timisoara, Cluj and Constanta, leading to major agglomerations. Malaysia is one of the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious countries in Southeast Asia. Due to the pluralistic nature of Malaysia, it has a political structure based on ethnic politics. The ethnic preferential policies affected most domains of this country. The objective of this article is to examine the origin and background of ethnic politics in Malaysia. Findings of this study indicate that, ethnic politics originated during the British colonial period, it became a tool used by the Barisan Nasional for the legitimacy of regime. Moreover, ethnic politics in Malaysia today is intertwined with religion. Besides, there is the dilemma of the choice between the interest of certain ethnic group and national interests. However, with the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan won the election in 9th May, UMNO-led BN lost power and interrupted its 61 years control, which leaves us an interesting topic to think about the future of Malaysian ethnic politics. Building on the renewed interest in social work historiography, this article examines how disability was perceived and constructed by the social work profession in the first decades of the State of Israel. A discourse analysis of articles published in the country's main social work journal (Welfare, 1957–77) underscores the importance of individualised discourses focused on the disabled person, her body, tragedy and, most importantly, her personality. This emphasis leads to an examination of the personality characteristics of disabled persons as seen or attributed by practitioners. The analysis then examines the social discourses arising from these articles and that which is sorely missing in them—the voice of the disabled. Finally, the study discusses some of the factors behind these professional discourses and conceptualises them within the theoretical framework of othering. Specifically, it concludes that these discourses turned welfare into a cultural location of disability, where disabled people were constructed and (re)shaped as the Other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that although it is now possible to travel more quickly and easily than ever before, transport-related social exclusion is more likely than it was in the past. Using evidence drawn from life writing and oral testimonies I examine the ways in which people accessed everyday transport over the past two centuries. In the early nineteenth century mobility options were limited and most people travelled in similar ways, though the rich always had access to the fastest and most comfortable transportation. From the mid-nineteenth century the railways provided fast travel for most people. Progressively, in the twentieth century British society became car dependent so that those without access to a car were disadvantaged. Such transport-related social exclusion was exacerbated by the denuding of public transport, and by heightened expectations for mobility which often could not be achieved. It is argued that a return to a less differentiated mobility system could increase transport-related social inclusion.

Academic inquiry into entrepreneurial phenomena has had a rich history over several decades and continues to evolve. This editorial draws attention to the classics: seminal articles that make profound contributions to the development of an academic field in entrepreneurship studies. We focus on the formative years of entrepreneurship research, specifically the 1970s and 1980s, to identify classics using a key informant approach that surveys members of the journal editorial board. Each nominated classic is introduced and discussed by an editorial board member, with particular focus on research opportunities that may be pursued going forward. Analyzing classics allows for the recognition of substantive advances in entrepreneurship research and provides an opportunity to delve into the academic progress achieved in understanding entrepreneurial phenomena.

The essay analyses the figure of Maria Montessori as a teacher and the teaching that she conducted in her career. A historical perspective is adopted, with reference to some fundamental moments in Montessori’s teaching life, described with the help of her own early writings (often unpublished), and the testimonies of some of her colleagues and students. M. Montessori began her career as a teacher in 1899 at the “Higher Institute of Teaching for Women” and then she continued at the “Pedagogical School” of the University of Rome. The analysis presented in this article shows that Montessori considered it essential to combine theory and practice, to promote students’ active participation, linking what is learnt in the classroom with the outside world. From her earliest experiences as a teacher, it became fundamental for Montessori to place her teaching against the background of social and civil commitment, open it up to comparison, and to integrate her experience with work and empirical research.

This article argues that contemporary antislavery activism in the United States is programmatically undermined and ethically compromised unless it is firmly grounded in a deep understanding of the African American past. Far too frequently those who claim to be “the new abolitionists” evince no interest in what the original abolitionist movement might have to teach them and seem entirely detached from a U.S. history in which the mass, systematic enslavement of African Americans and its consequences are dominating themes. As a result contemporary antislavery activism too often marginalizes the struggle for racial justice in the United States and even indulges in racist ideology. In an effort to overcome these problems, this article seeks to demonstrate in specific detail how knowledge of the African American past can empower opposition to slavery as we encounter it today.
