Addition of the carbonium ion to vinylidene chloride to give α-substituted acetic acid discovered by Bott1,2 has been found of wide applicability. For example, the reaction of 1-bromo-, 1-hydroxy-, or 1-acetoxy-adamantane with vinylidene chloride in concentrated sulfuric acid gives a satisfactory yield of adamanty1-(1)-Acetic acid.3,4

The temperature dependences of 81Br nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies and quadrupolar relaxation times of Cs2ZnBr4 were measured. The librational motion of [ZnBr4]2− about the Zn–Br axis parallel to the a axis in the crystal is more active than those about the other axes. The reason why this compound shows no phase transition can be accounted for by the molecular packing, especially the packing of [ZnBr4]2− along the a axis. General examination of the relative size of cation/anion in the class of compounds of A2MX4 type led to a criterion which may be used to rationalize existence and absence of a phase transition.

Secondary (6) and tertiary (8) phosphates of exo-5,6-trimethylenenorborn-exo-2-yl alcohol (exo-tricyclo-[5.2.1.0(2,6)]dec-exo-8-yl alcohol, 3) and a secondary ester (9) of a mixture of exo-tricyclo[5.2.1.0(2,6)]dec-3-en-8- and -9-yl alcohol (2) were prepared. The most convenient route to 6 was direct esterification of phosphoric acid with 3. 9 was obtainable by the addition of phosphoric acid to endo-dicyclopentadiene (1). These phosphates were tested in vitro for antiviral activity against Newcastle disease virus using a monolayer culture of chick embryo fibroblasts. 6 was found ca. twice more potent than, while 8 was as active as, amantadine hydrochloride under the present test conditions.

The solubility of trihexyphenidyl (Thp) was improved by its combination with β-cyclodextrin (β−CD) and modified β-CDs. The solubility of Thp was found to be increased in the presence of β-CD, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), methyl-β-cyclodextrin (Me-β-CD) and sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD). In particular, the solubility of Thp in conjunction with SBE-β-CD was increased by a factor of 11. The formation constant (K c ) for the Thp/SBE-β-CD inclusion complex was determined to be 2300 L/mol based on fluorometry data. The structure of the Thp/SBE-β-CD complex in aqueous solution was examined by 1H-1H rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY) NMR, and the phenyl moiety of the Thp was found to coordinate with the secondary hydroxyl face of the SBE-β-CD. A solid Thp/SBE-β-CD inclusion complex was prepared by freeze-drying.
