Abstract

To assess the effects of exercise training on the prevalence of valvular regurgitation, 2-dimensional echocardiography and Doppler flow mapping were performed in 45 athletes and 26 sedentary control subjects of similar age and sex. Mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonic regurgitations were sought in all possible views and mitral and tricuspid flow velocities were recorded. Mitral and tricuspid anulus diameters and the maximal areas of regurgitant flow were planimetered. Abstract

Anemia, a condition of decreased red blood cells and a concomitant deficiency of iron, has been reported in some endurance athletes. The anemia appears to be caused by two major factors: the athlete's blood volume may be inflated by increased level of plasma, the noncellular fluid component of blood, diluting the ratio of blood cells to fluid; and there may be a decreased amount of iron stored in the body. There appears to be an association between this observed anemia and the level of overall exertion with training. This effect is also associated with the form of exercise, affecting long-distance runners, for example, but not rowers. In previous research, 50 percent of ultraendurance triathletes have been found to have reduced iron status according to at least one test. Blood iron levels of 50 triathletes in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship were studied. The group included 31 men and 19 women. Each athlete completed a questionnaire and a log of total food intake over a three-day period. The participants' exercise schedule included 7.8 miles per week for swimming, 285.5 miles per week bicycling and 43.2 miles per week running. The study focused on individual differences from the average, and 26 percent of the athletes had a significant reduction in at least one value which measured iron. None of the athletes could be classified as having an iron deficiency anemia. Eleven athletes had abnormally low hemoglobin levels, indicative of low iron; only two subjects were clearly deficient. The apparent depressed iron status of triathletes may be associated with inflammation, which is known to give a suppressed measurement of iron, and the difficult training and racing conditions for these athletes may lead to low level infections which also give false iron values. The iron status of triathlon athletes should be determined by a battery of tests, and care must be used to separate true anemia from artificially depressed results stemming from low level inflammation.

Abstract

Experimental flow investigations on smooth airfoils were done using numerical solutions for transonic airfoil streaming with shockless supersonic range. The experimental flow reproduced essential sections of the theoretically computed frictionless solution. Agreement is better in the expansion part of the of the flow than in the compression part. The flow was nearly stationary in the entire velocity range investigated.

The keto-enole tautomerism 3 half arrow right over half arrow left 4 is further investigated with aid of semiempirical quantum chemical calculations, based upon the molecular geometry of 3a, deduced from an X-ray study.
