Intelligent information technology has signi?cantly progressed along with the rapid growth of computer communication networks in the last decade. The - search in this domain became highly active under the worldwide growing en- ronment providing the objective study issues. The research situation in Japan is no exception in this trend. An enormous number of studies in intelligent - formation technology are presented every year in Japanese domestic conferences associated with this?eld. Many of them are outstanding in terms of the tech- cal originality, quality and signi?cance. The annual conference of JSAI (Japan Society for Arti?cial Intelligence) is one of the key and representative domestic meetings in the?eld of intelligent information technology. In particular, award papers in this conference have an excellent quality in international standards. TheannualconferenceofJSAIalsoorganizesco-locatedinternationalworkshops to provide excellent study reports for worldwide researchers. The objectives of this book are to present the award papers from the 19th annual conference of JSAI 2005 and the selected papers from the?ve co-located international workshops and to promote the study exchange among worldwide researchers. Five papers received awards among more than 200 presentations in the conference, and 40 papers were selected from the workshops of Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics 2005 (LENLS 2005), Learning with Logics and Logics for Learning (LLLL 2005), Agent Network Dynamics and Intelligence (ANDI 2005), Conversational Informatics (CI 2005) and Risk Management Systems with Intelligent Data Analysis (RMSIDA 2005).

Since knowledge was recognized as a crucial part of intelligent systems in the 1970s and early 1980s, the problem of the systematic and efficient acquisition of knowledge was an important research problem. In the early days of expert systems, the focus of knowledge acquisition was to design a suitable knowledge base for the problem - main by eliciting the knowledge from available experts before the system was c- pleted and deployed. Over the years, alternative approaches were developed, such as incremental approaches which would build a provisional knowledge base initially and would improve the knowledge base while the system was used in practice. Other approaches sought to build knowledge bases fully automatically by employing machine-learning methods. In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.

For most of our history the wealth of a nation was limited by the size and stamina of the work force. Today, national wealth is measured in intellectual capital. Nations possessing skillful people in such diverse areas as science, medicine, business, and engineering produce innovations that drive the nation to a higher quality of life. To better utilize these valuable resources, intelligent, knowledge-based systems technology has evolved at a rapid and significantly expanding rate. Reflecting the most fascinating AI-based research and its broad practical applications, intelligent, knowledge-based systems technology is being utilized by nations to improve their medical care, advance their engineering technology, and increase their manufacturing productivity, as well as play a significant role in a very wide variety of other areas of activity of substantive significance. Today, in the beginning of the 21st century, it is difficult to imagine the development of the modern world without extensive use of the AI information technology that is rapidly transforming the global, knowledge- based economy as well as entire societies. The breadth of the major application areas of intelligent, knowledge-based systems technology is very impressive. These include, among other areas: Agriculture, Business, Chemistry, Communications, Computer Systems, Education, Electronics, Engineering, Environment, Geology, Image Processing, Information Management, Law, Manufacturing, Mathematics, Medicine, Meteorology, Military, Mining, Power Systems, Science, Space Technology, and Transportation. The great breadth and expanding significance of this field on the international scene require a multi-volume, major reference work for an adequately substantive treatment of the subject,'Intelligent Knowledge-Based Systems: Business and Technology in The New Millennium.'This work consists of the following distinctly titled and well integrated volumes. Volume I. Knowledge-Based Systems; Volume II. Information Technology; Volume III.Expert and Agent Systems; Volume IV.Intelligent Systems; Volume V.Neural Networks. This five-volume set clearly manifests the great significance of these key technologies for the new economies of the new millennium. “Intelligent systems must perform in order to be in demand. ” Intelligent systems technology is being applied steadily in solving many day-to-day problems. Each year the list of real-world deployed applications that inconspicuously host the results of research in the area grows considerably. These applications are having a significant impact in industrial operations, in financial circles, in transportation, in education, in medicine, in consumer products, in games and elsewhere. A set of selected papers presented at the seventeenth in the series of conferences on Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems (IEA/AIE 2004), sponsored by the International Society of Applied Intelligence, is offered in this manuscript. These papers highlight novel applications of the technology and show how new research could lead to new and innovative applications. We hope that you find these papers to be educational, useful in your own research, and stimulating. In addition, we have introduced some special sessions to emphasize a few areas of artificial intelligence (AI) that are either relatively new, have received considerable attention recently or perhaps have not yet been represented well. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, PKDD 2004, held in Pisa, Italy, in September 2004 jointly with ECML 2004. The 39 revised full papers and 9 revised short papers presented together with abstracts of 5 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 194 papers submitted to PKDD and 107 papers submitted to both, PKDD and ECML. The papers present a wealth of new results in knowledge discovery in databases and address all current issues in the area.
