Complex formation of poly(glutumic acid) with cupric ions in aqueous solution was investigated by three different methods: optical spectroscopy, optical rotatory dispersion, and electron spin resonance. Formation of a characteristic complex was found to occur in a pH region suitable for the helix-coil transition. An analysis of the ESH spectrum of the complex is given, and the results of calculation of bonding parameters suggest that the bond between copper and nitrogen atoms had an appreciably covalent character. The change in the secondary structure of the polymer as a result of complex formation is discussed.

Detailed spatiotemporal patterns of the influence of urbanization-induced eutrophication on a metazoan benthic community in Osaka Bay were determined using sediment cores and fossil ostracode assemblages from the last 200 yr. Results suggest that total abundance of ostracodes increased in the middle part of the bay as a result of the increase of food supply by eutrophication. Conversely, abundance decreased in the inner bay, likely because of bottom-water hypoxia by eutrophication. The variation in species composition among sites within the bay may have decreased because of the effect of eutrophication, i.e., the dominance of species that prefer food-rich environments throughout all sites. These eutrophication-induced changes occurred around 1900 as a result of Japan’s industrial revolution and around 1960 as a result of rapid urbanization, depending upon location.

The gaseous products from the radiolysis of squalane, (C/sub 30/H/sub 62/ ) were studied. The G values and relative retention time of the gaseous products were determined. The bond energies in the squalane molecule were calculated by the Brown Method. (C.J.G.)

Cyclooctatetraene was irradiated at low pressure for several days with gamma rays from Co/sup 60/ at a dose rate of about 5300 r/min, total doses ranging from 30 to 50 mr. The H/sub 2/ and acetylene produced were identified and measured, and other products were measured after istilling the unreacted cyclooctatetraene out of the rection cell. It is evident that liquid cyclooctatetraene is one of the most radiation-stable organic liquids. (J.R.D.)

IN the course of investigations on the effect of γ-rays on inorganic colloids, we observed formation of gold sol from an aqueous solution of chloroauric acid. This communication presents our preliminary findings since very little is known about the formation of a heterogeneous system of this nature induced by irradiation1,2.
