Abstract

This report contains the Proceedings of the ICFA Mini-Workshop on Beam-Beam Effects in Hadron Colliders held at CERN from 18 to 22 March 2013. It was the first of its kind after the successful start of LHC operation where a vast amount of beam-beam observations emerged. It brought together 58 international experts in the field and the purpose of this workshop was to review the present knowledge in the fields of beam-beam theory, simulations and observations. In the summary session the participants acknowledged the enormous progress made in recent years and the introduction of new concepts and tools. The workshop was concluded by a discussion on future research work with emphasis on the LHC operation and future circular colliders. Abstract

The mechanism of Landau damping is observed in various systems from plasma oscillations to accelerators. Despite its widespread use, some confusion has been created, partly because of the different mechanisms producing the damping but also due to the mathematical subtleties treating the effects. In this article the origin of Landau damping is demonstrated for the damping of plasma oscillations. In the second part it is applied to the damping of coherent oscillations in particle accelerators. Abstract

A novel type of 2.76 m long slotted, or perforated, strip-line pick-up, or kicker electrode structure, for CSRe stochastic cooling of non-relativistic particle beams with β~ 0.7 is presented. It is installed inside a bending vacuum chamber with the output signal taken from the downstream end. This slotted structure features a sufficiently broad bandwidth, good beam coupling impedance, low losses and a comparatively easy mechanical construction and installation into the CSRe dipole chamber. In this paper the electrode structure and pickup tank, as well as the beam test results will be presented.

Abstract

Coherent instabilities of bunches in the LHC bunch train can be observed when the tune spread from beam-beam interactions becomes insufficient to ensure Landau damping. In particular these effects are seen on bunches with a reduced number of beam-beam interactions due to their collision pattern. Furthermore, such a reduction of the necessary stability can occur during the processes when the beams are prepared for collisions or during the optimization procedure. We discuss observations and possible countermeasures, in particular alternatives to the existing beam manipulation processes where such a situation can occur.

Abstract

During the 2012 run transverse coherent beam instabilities have been observed in the LHC at 4 TeV, during the betatron squeeze and in collision for special filling patterns. Several studies to characterize these instabilities have been carried out during operation and in special dedicated experiments. In this paper we summarize the observations collected for different machine parameters and the present understanding of the origin of these instabilities.

Abstract

We report the observation of coherent instabilities on individual bunches out of the LHC bunch train. These instabilities occurred spontaneously after several hours of stable beam while in the other cases they were related to the application of a small transverse beam separation during a luminosity optimization. Only few bunches were affected, depending on their collision schemes and following various tests we interpret these instabilities as a sudden loss of Landau damping when the tune spread from the beam-beam interaction becomes insufficient.

Abstract

While significantly more complicated in term of operation, bringing the beams into collisions prior to the β squeeze rather than after presents some advantages. Indeed, the large tune spread arising from the non-linearity of head-on beam-beam interactions is profitable, as it can damp impedance driven instabilities much more efficiently than external non-linearity such as octupoles. Moreover, this operation allows to level the luminosity in the case when the peak luminosity is too high for the experiments. Operational issues are discussed and experimental results from the LHC are presented.

Observations of instabilities while leveling luminosity with a transverse offset at the interaction point during the 2012 physics run of the LHC suggests that the beam stability in this confguration can be critical. 196. MD on squeeze with colliding beams

Abstract

Beam stability during the ramp, the squeeze and the process where the beams are brought into collisions proved to be a critical issue in 2012. To control instabilities both octupoles and chromaticity had to be increased significantly. But it was also observed that the beams are very stable as soon as they are colliding head-on in ATLAS and CMS, the large beam-beam tune spread providing Landau damping. Following those observation it seemed natural to evaluate the option of operating the squeeze with colliding beams. This way of running the squeeze is rather similar to the concept of betastar-leveling, except that the betastar step size corresponds to the entire squeeze range, which makes it more tricky as the beams have to be kept in collision all the time. The MD described in this note extends tests of luminosity leveling with betastar that were made in June and July 2012 during and after the second MD period. A successful experiment was performed in order to show that betastar leveling can be achieved in the LHC, and that it can be made operational, the results are described in this note.

Abstract

In high brightness colliders, the tune spread due to the collisions has a significant impact on the quality of the beams. The impact of the working point on emittance growth and beam lifetime has been observed in beam experiments in LHC. Strong-strong beam-beam simulations that were accomplished to better understand such observations are shown. Compared to experiments, wide ranged parameter scans can be done easily. Tune footprints and scans of the emittance growth obtained from simulations are discussed. Three cases are considered: Very high intensity, moderate intensity and collisions with separated beams.
