Abstract

It is challenging to precisely image magnetic structures in a context of pronounced topography. Tapping mode techniques have been developed to provide a practical solution to the need for magnetic characterization in these situations. By successively scanning the topography of the sample and its magnetic signal on a line-by-line basis, the sample's inherent topography and most dust contamination can be dealt with, constituting a convenient method for the study of e.g. patterned media, or other small structures. But as research and development push the relevant dimensions downward, higher sensitivity and spatial resolution are required of the measurement. It thus becomes necessary to move to vacuum, whereby the cantilever sensitivity is increased and adhered water layers can be removed. Vacuum operation also facilitates low temperature measurements, which generally present stability advantages apart from the possibility of applying large magnetic fields. The quantitative evaluation of measurement data introduces a further constraint on the measurement, that the tip must not be modified between measurements.

Abstract

Magnetic discussion on Fe/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions, show an evidence of room temperature antiferromagnetic coupling between two ferromagnetic layers across a very thin insulating barrier. The antiferromagnetic coupling is observed are in good agreement with the equilibrium interlayer exchange theory by spin polarized quantum tunneling of electrons between the ferromagnetic layers.

Abstract

In this letter we introduce a new type of infrared sensor, based on thermocouple nanoantennas, which enables the energy detection and gathering in the mid-infrared region. The proposed detector combines the Seebeck effect, as a transduction mechanism, with the functionalities of the optical antennas for optical sensing. Abstract

A two-dimensional (2D) exchange NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) experiment with sample flip during the mixing time (direction exchange with correlation for orientation-distribution evaluation and reconstruction, DECODER) is presented, which allows investigation of molecular order in great detail. For anisotropic NMR interactions with axial symmetry (η=0), the features of the orientation distribution of certain molecular axes are reflected directly in the distribution of the intensity in the 2D spectrum. The orientation distribution in terms of two angles can be largely reconstructed by a simple rearrangement of the spectral intensity. Analogies between this NMR experiment and wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques for pole figure analysis are identified. Practical aspects of the DECODER method are considered in detail, e.g., sample orientations that are particularly suited for elucidating biaxiality with high resolution, or that are convenient in terms of sample preparation. Even with spectral overlap and for η≠0, the degree of order can be read immediately from the spectrum. Abstract

Using specially engineered structures to tailor the optical absorption in a metallic multilayer, we analyze the magnetization dynamics of a Co/Pt multilayer buried below a thick Cu layer. We demonstrate that hot electrons alone can very efficiently induce ultrafast demagnetization. Simulations based on hot electron ballistic transport implemented within a microscopic model that accounts for local dissipation of angular momentum nicely reproduce the experimental results, ruling out contribution of pure thermal transport

Abstract

Double-barrier fully epitaxial crystalline magnetic tunnel junctions employing a class of artificial antiferromagnetic (AAF) subsystem are elaborated by molecular-beam epitaxy. Our specific AAF subsystem is constituted by an Fe(10 nm)/MgO(0.7 nm)/Fe(20 nm) trilayer stack where the antiferromagnetic coupling between the two Fe layers occurs by spin-polarized tunneling of electrons across the three, atomic-layer thin MgO insulating barrier. In our junctions, the efficiency of spin filtering is validated by the tunnel magnetoresistance effects of about 140% at room temperature and a high output voltage up to 500 mV at 1.3 V. Abstract

Large area patterning of self-assembled alumina nanobumps, with hexagonally close-packed order, has been used to create ordered array of bit pattern magnetic media. We have studied the magnetic properties of perpendicular magnetic TbCo alloy and Co/Pt multilayers deposited on self assembled alumina nanobumps. Measurement of reversal field as a function of field intensity, as well as magnetic force microscopy images confirm the weakness of exchange coupling between bits in the case of Co/Pt multilayer while stronger coupling is observed in the case of TbCo alloys. Abstract

We fabricated a perpendicularlymagnetized bit pattern media using a hexagonally close-packed auto-assembled anodic alumina template with 100 nm and 50 nm periods by depositing a Co/Pt multilayer to form an ordered array of ferromagnetic nanodots, so-called nanobumps. We used Hall resistance measurements and magnetic force microscopy to characterize the dot-by-dot magnetization reversal mechanism under applied field. The role of interdot exchange coupling and dipolar coupling are investigated. Then we focus on separating the various origins of switching field distribution (SFD) in this system, namely dipolar interactions, intrinsic anisotropy distribution, and template packing faults. Finally we discuss the influence of triangular dipolar frustrations on the energy stability of demagnetized and half-switched states based on an Ising model, including local exchange coupling. The impact of SFD and lattice defects lines between misoriented ordered domains on the magnetic configurations is studied in detail.

Abstract

A new design for an in-situ combination of NMR and rheological measurements is presented. The NMR instrumentation is based on a Bruker Minispec spectrometer with a home-built magnet system consisting of 64 permanent magnets in a so-called MANDHALA arrangement. This magnet reaches a flux density of about 0.23 T, corresponding to a H-1 NMR resonance frequency of about 9.5 MHz. The NMR apparatus is combined with a Scarabaeus SISV50 instrument with modified sample cells to allow synchronous in-situ rheological and NMR measurements. This unique instrument and first exemplary measurements of a curing epoxy resin and the vulcanization of a rubber sample are presented.
