Macrocephaly affects up to 5% of the pediatric population and is defined as an abnormally large head with an occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) >2 standard deviations (SD) above the mean for a given age and sex. Taking into account that about 2–3% of the healthy population has an OFC between 2 and 3 SD, macrocephaly is considered as “clinically relevant” when OFC is above 3 SD. This implies the urgent need for a diagnostic workflow to use in the clinical setting to dissect the several causes of increased OFC, from the benign form of familial macrocephaly and the Benign enlargement of subarachnoid spaces (BESS) to many pathological conditions, including genetic disorders. Moreover, macrocephaly should be differentiated by megalencephaly (MEG), which refers exclusively to brain overgrowth, exceeding twice the SD (3SD—“clinically relevant” megalencephaly). While macrocephaly can be isolated and benign or may be the first indication of an underlying congenital, genetic, or acquired disorder, megalencephaly is most likely due to a genetic cause. Apart from the head size evaluation, a detailed family and personal history, neuroimaging, and a careful clinical evaluation are crucial to reach the correct diagnosis. In this review, we seek to underline the clinical aspects of macrocephaly and megalencephaly, emphasizing the main differential diagnosis with a major focus on common genetic disorders. We thus provide a clinico-radiological algorithm to guide pediatricians in the assessment of children with macrocephaly.

Vitamin B12 (B12) is a co-enzyme essential for fetal growth and development. Lower maternal B12 status has been associated with preterm birth (<37 gestational weeks) and low birth weight (<2500 g), which are linked to morbidity and mortality across the lifespan. In Canada, 17–25 % of women in early pregnancy had a serum total B12 concentration <148 pmol/l and maternal total B12 concentration decreased throughout pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the association between maternal B12 status and birth outcomes in Canadian mother–newborn dyads. A secondary analysis of 709 mother–newborn dyads in British Columbia (BC), Canada, was conducted. Bio-banked first- (n 656) and second-trimester (n 709) maternal serum samples of apparently healthy South Asian (50 %) and European (50 %) women from the BC Prenatal Genetic Screening Program were quantified for B12 biomarkers (total B12, holotranscobalamin (holoTC), methylmalonic acid (MMA) and total homocysteine (tHcy)). Obstetric history and birth outcome data were obtained from the BC Perinatal Data Registry. All associations were determined using multiple linear regression. Maternal serum total B12, holoTC, MMA and tHcy had a mean weekly decrease of 3·64 pmol/l, 1·04 pmol/l, 1·44 nmol/l and 0·104 μmol/l, respectively (P < 0·001). Despite a total B12 concentration <148 pmol/l among 20–25 % of the women, maternal B12 biomarker concentrations were not associated with birth weight z-score, head circumference z-score and gestational age at birth (P > 0·05). Background: Achondroplasia is the most common genetic skeletal disorder causing disproportionate short stature/dwarfism. Common additional features include spinal stenosis, midface retrusion, macrocephaly and a generalized spondylometaphyseal dysplasia which manifest as spinal cord compression, sleep disordered breathing, delayed motor skill acquisition and genu varus with musculoskeletal pain. To better understand the interactions and health outcomes of these potential complications, we embarked on a multi-center, natural history study entitled CLARITY (achondroplasia natural history study). One of the CLARITY objectives was to develop growth curves (length/height, weight, head circumference, weight-for-height) and corresponding reference tables of mean and standard deviations at 1 month increments from birth through 18 years for clinical use and research for achondroplasia patients.Methods: All available retrospective anthropometry data including length/height, weight and head circumference from achondroplasia patients were collected at 4 US skeletal dysplasia centers (Johns Hopkins University, AI DuPont Hospital for Children, McGovern Medical School University of Texas Health, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health). Weight-for-age values beyond 3 SD above the mean were excluded from the weight-for-height and weight-for-age curves to create a stricter tool for weight assessment in this population.Results: Over 37,000 length/height, weight and head circumference measures from 1374 patients with achondroplasia from birth through 75 years of age were compiled in a REDCap database. Stature and weight data from birth through 18 years of age and head circumference from birth through 5 years of age were utilized to construct new length/height-for-age, weight-for-age, head circumference-for-age and weight-for-height curves.Conclusion: Achondroplasia-specific growth curves are essential for clinical care of growing infants and children with this condition. In an effort to provide prescriptive, rather than purely descriptive, references for weight in this population, extreme weight values were omitted from the weight-for-age and weight-for-height curves. This well-phenotyped cohort may be studied with other global achondroplasia populations (e.g. Europe, Argentina, Australia, Japan) to gain further insight into environmental or ethnic influences on growth. Objective  We sought to determine if variation in head circumference (HC) within the range of normal (5th–10th and 90th–95th percentile) is associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes (NDO), which defined as mild or moderate delay by Bayley II psychometrics (BSID-II). Study Design  This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial assessing the benefits of magnesium for the prevention of cerebral palsy. Fetuses with a normal HC at birth defined as within 5th to 95th percentile were included. NDO were assessed at age 2 with BSID-II. Moderate delay was defined as a score <70 and mild delay as <85. HC was classified as small normal (5th–10th percentile), normal (10th–90th percentile), and large normal (90th–95th percentile). Logistic regression models adjusted for confounding. Linear regression models estimated the impact for every 1 cm of change in HC. Results  Of 1,236 included infants, 111 (8%) had small normal HC; 1,058 (85%) had normal HC; and 67 (5%) had large normal HC. Baseline characteristics were similar between groups. There was no association with changes in HC within the range of normal and developmental indices. When considered as a continuous variable, every 1 cm increase in HC was also not associated with a significant change in developmental indices. Conclusion  Within the normal range (5th–95th percentile), changes in HC did not correlate with changes in NDO at 2 years as measured by Bayley II scales. Key Points It is unknown if variations in normal HC are associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Alterations in HC within the range of normal (5th–95th percentile) are not associated with adverse NDO. Introduction: Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD) is one of the most common obstetric complications. Since CPD is the disproportion between the fetal head and maternal bony pelvis, evaluation of the head circumference (HC) relative to the maternal bony pelvis may be a useful adjunct to pre-labor CPD evaluation. The aim of the present study was a proof-of-concept evaluation of the ratio between HC and pelvic circumference (PC) as a predictor of CPD.Methods: Of 11,822 deliveries, 104 cases that underwent an abdominopelvic CT for any medical indication and who underwent normal vaginal deliveries (NVDs) (n = 84) or cesarean deliveries (CD) due to CPD (n = 20) were included retrospectively. Maternal pelvis dimensions were reconstructed and neonatal HC, as a proxy for fetal HC, was measured. The correlation between cases of CPD and cephalopelvic circumference index (CPCI), which represents the ratio between the HC and PC in percentage (HC/PC × 100), was evaluated.Results: The mid-pelvis CPCI (MP-CPCI) was larger in CD groups as compared to the NVD group: 103 ± 11 versus 97 ± 8%, respectively (p = 0.0003). In logistic regression analysis, the MP-CPCI was found to be independently associated with CD due to CPD: each 1% increase in MP-CPCI increased the likelihood of CD for CPD by 11% (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.11, 95% CI, 1.03-1.19, p = 0.004). The aOR for CD due to CPD increased incrementally as the MP-CPCI increased, from 3.56 (95% CI, 1.01-12.6) at MP-CPCI of 100 to 5.6 (95% CI, 1.63-19.45) at 105, 21.44 (95% CI, 3.05-150.84) at 110, and 28.88 (95% CI, 2.3-362.27) at MP-CPCI of 115.Conclusions: The MP-CPCI, representing the relative dimensions of the fetal HC and maternal PC, is a simple tool that can potentially distinguish between parturients at lower and higher risk of CPD. Background: Failed vacuum-assisted delivery (VD) is associated with increased risk of maternal perineal trauma and neonatal morbidity. Knowledge of the risk factors related to failed VD is essential in the clinical decision-making.Objective: To elucidate the strength of association and the predictive accuracy of different ante-partum ultrasound parameters in predicting the risk of failed VD prior to the onset of Labor and to test the diagnostic performance of a multiparametric model including pregnancy and Labor characteristics, ante and intra-partum ultrasound in anticipating failed VD.Study Design: Prospective study of consecutive singleton pregnancies complicated by VD undergoing a dedicated ultrasound assessment at 36-38 weeks of gestation. Head circumference (HC), estimated fetal weight (EFW) and subpubic angle and (SPA) were recorded before the onset of Labor. At the time of the VD, occiput position, head perineum distance (HPD) and angle of progression (AOP) were also recorded. Multivariate logistic regression and area under the curve (AUC) analyses were used to explore the strength of association and test the diagnostic accuracy of different maternal, Labor and ultrasound characteristics in predicting g failed VD.Results: Four hundred eight pregnancies with successful and 26 with failed VD were included in the analysis. Fetuses experiencing failed VD had a larger HC (1.21 versus 1.07 MoM; p = .0001), a higher EFW z-value (0.56 versus 0.33 z values; p = .002) and a narrower SPA (114 versus 122 p = .0001) compared to those having a successful VD. At multivariable logistic regression analysis, maternal height (aOR 0.89 95% CI 0.76-0.98), nulliparity (aOR: 1.14 95% CI 1.06-1.36), HC MoM (aOR: 1.24 95% CI 1.13-1.55) and SPA angle (aOR: 0.82 95% CI 0.67-0.95), but not EFW (p = .08) were independently associated with failed VD. When intrapartum ultrasound variables were added to the multivariate model, fetal occipital position (aOR: 1.45 95th CI 1.11-1.99) and HPD (aOR: 0.77 95th CI 0.44-0.96) were independently associated with failed VD. A multiparametric model integrating pregnancy and Labor characteristics and ante-partum ultrasound variables had an AUC of 0.837 (95% CI 0.797-0.876) for the prediction of failed VE. The addition of intra-partum ultrasound variables to the prediction model, improved the accuracy for failed VD provided by maternal and antepartum ultrasound characteristics with an AUC of 0.913 (0.888-0.937).Conclusion: Antepartum prediction of failed VD is feasible. HC, SPA but not EFW are independently associated and predictive of failed VD. Background: Feeding supplemented mother milk during hospital stay improves neurodevelopment in preterm infants. Yet the composition of mother milk varies widely between subjects. The relationship between this variation and outcome is unknown. Objective: To determine whether the protein content in native breast milk (BM) correlates with 2-year infant outcome. Design: In a monocentric prospective observational study, LACTACOL, preterm infants born between 28 and 34 weeks of gestation, whose mothers decided to exclusively breastfeed, were enrolled during the first week of life. Samples of expressed breast milk obtained at several times of the day were pooled over a 24-h period, and such pool was used for macronutrient analysis, using mid-infrared analyzer. Age and Stages questionnaire (ASQ) was used to assess 2-year neurodevelopmental outcome. We analyzed the relationship between protein content in BM, and (i) infant neurodevelopment at 2-year (primary outcome), and (ii) growth until 2-year (secondary outcome). Results: 138 infants were enrolled. The main analysis concerned 130 infants (including 40 twin infants) and 110 mothers with BM samples collected at week 3 after birth. Native BM samples were ranked in three tertiles of protein content (g/100 ml): 0.91 ± 0.09 (lower), 1.14 ± 0.05 (middle) and 1.40 ± 0.15 (upper); 48, 47 and 35 infants were ranked, respectively, in these three tertiles. Infants in the upper tertile were more often singleton (P = 0.012) and were born with lower birth weight and head circumference Z-scores (P = 0.005 and 0.002, respectively). Differences in weight and head circumference were no longer observed at 2-year. ASQ score at age 2 did not differ between the three tertiles (P = 0.780). Sensitivity analyses with imputations, including all 138 infants, confirmed the main analysis as well as analyses based on fortified BM as exposure. Conclusions: Protein content of BM (native or fortified) is not associated with preterm infant neurodevelopment at 2-year. Higher protein content was associated with a lower birth weight. Objective: To identify risk factors for increasing severity of OASI and evaluate its possible correlation with two known risk factors-birth weight (BW) and neonatal head circumference (HC).Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study at a university affiliated hospital between 2003 and 2019. We compared five groups of patients - according to presence and degree of perineal laceration - 3a, 3b, 3c and 4 and patients without OASI. Additionally, four parameters were defined to assess their relation to the severity of OASI: (1) BW ≥ 90th and HC < 90th percentiles; (2) BW < 90th and HC ≥ 90th percentile; (3) BW and HC ≥ 90th percentile and (4) BW and HC < 90th percentiles.Results: During the study period, 150,221 deliveries were evaluated. Parturients were allocated according to OASI severity - 455 patients had a 3rd (3a, 3b or 3c) or 4th degree perineal tear, while 110,966 patients had no OASI. Allocation to subgroups according to offspring anthropomorphic measures showed that as fetal size parameters increased, the rate of more severe tears increased, particularly in women delivering neonates with HC ≥ 90th percentile. Multinomial regression analysis was performed for each 3rd degree OASI subgroup. This analysis demonstrated the odds for OASI gradually increase with tear severity for BW ≥ 90th percentile and the combined BW and HC ≥ 90th percentile parameters, as compared with neonates with HC and BW < 90th percentile.Conclusions: Birth weight and head circumference above the 90th percentile are correlated with increased degree of OASI severity. The oro-facial morphology is greatly affected in neonates with a cleft lip and palate. The initial evaluation of neonate’s body and maxillary arch dimensions is important for treatment planning and predicting growth in cleft patients. The objective of this study was comparative evaluation of the anthropometric and physiologic parameters of cleft and non-cleft neonates in a hospital-based set up. This cross sectional study was conducted on 88 cleft and non-cleft neonates (n = 44 in each group) aged between 0 and 30 days after obtaining approval from the institutional ethics committee and positive written informed consent from their parents. Neonates’ body weight, body length, head length, head circumference, and maxillary arch dimensions were measured. Maxillary arch dimensions were measured on dental casts with digital sliding calipers. Statistical analyses performed using the independent t-test and one-way ANOVA analysis were followed by Bonferroni correction for post-hoc comparison. The results showed statistically significant differences in birth weight (p < 0.0001), head length (p < 0.01), head circumference (p < 0.007), and maxillary arch dimensions (p < 0.0001) between cleft and non-cleft neonates. Background: Growth failure is commonly reported in children with PMM2-CDG. The aim of the study was to delineate the longitudinal anthropometric phenotype of patients with PMM2-CDG and attempt to find some correlations between the genotype and anthropometric phenotype. Materials and methods: Retrospective chart review of PMM2-CDG patients’ medical records was performed regarding the anthropometric measurements (head circumference, body length/height, body weight, body mass index) and PMM2 variants. Results: A negative tendency of growth evolution was observed. Patients found to be heterozygous for R141H grew slower than other patients. Body weight was correlated with body height. A negative tendency of the growth rate of head circumference was observed. Patients found to be heterozygous for R141H experienced slower growth than other patients. Conclusions: Long-term observational studies are essential to characterize the anthropometric phenotype. Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and head circumference (HC) and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics in the pediatric population. The prospective study included a total of 137 participants, 75 boys and 62 girls, ranging in age from 2 to 204 months. Quantitative evaluation of CSF flow was made by using phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) in the axial plane at the level of the aqueductus cerebri. Flow dynamics were recorded as peak and mean velocity (cm/s); cranial, caudal, and net volume (ml); and aqueductus cerebri area (mm2). Correlation between baseline descriptive parameters, including age, gender, BMI, and HC, and the aforementioned CSF flow dynamics were investigated. Results The net volume was significantly lower in girls (p = 0.002). There was no association between age and aqueduct area, mean velocity, and cranial volume. The peak velocity was remarkably higher in children (p = 0.03), whereas cranial and net volume were found to be lower in infants (p = 0.04 and p = 0.03, respectively). Notably, cases with HC below normal values had lower cranial, caudal, and net volume and aqueductus cerebri area (p = 0.01, p = 0.03, p = 0.03, and p = 0.04, respectively). There was no association between BMI and indicators of CSF flow dynamics in PC-MRI. Conclusion BMI and HC may be associated with CSF flow dynamics in children. A smaller HC is accompanied by a lower forward flow volume, reverse flow volume, net volume, and aqueductal diameter. These points should be remembered during the design of further trials on determinants of CSF flow in children.

Abstract Background Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisystem genetic disorder, which has a typical eating behavior and growth pattern. In the infancy period, children with PWS have low body weight followed by hyperphagia in later childhood. Disease-specific growth charts have been recommended for monitoring PWS patients. Previous literature demonstrated growth differences among individuals with PWS of different ethnicity. Methods A retrospective multicenter study was performed in PWS patients from different areas of Thailand included collaboration with the Thai PWS support group during 2000–2017. Baseline characteristics and anthropometric data were reviewed. Both growth hormone and non-growth hormone received patients were included, but the data after receiving GH were excluded before curve construction. Growth charts for Thai PWS compared to the 50th normative centile were constructed using Generalized Least Squares (GLS) methods. Curve smoothing was performed by Fractional Polynomials and Exponential Transformation. Result One hundred and thirteen patients with genetically confirmed PWS (55 males and 58 females) were enrolled. Fifty percent of patients were diagnosed less than 6 months of age. We developed growth charts for non-growth hormone treated Thai children with PWS aged between 0 and 18 years. A growth pattern was similar to other ethnicities while there were some differences. Mean birth weight of PWS patients was less than that of typical newborns. Mean adult height at 18 years of age in Thai children with PWS was lower than that in American children, but taller than Japanese. Mean weight of Thai PWS males at 18 years of age was more than those from other countries. Conclusion This study is the first to document PWS-specific growth charts in Southeast Asian population. These growth charts will be useful in improving the quality of patient care and in evaluating the impact of growth hormone treatment in the future.

Background: Anthropometry is a branch of anatomy. One of the important parts of anthropometry is cephalometry, which is characterized by anatomical dimensions of the head area. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between brain volume, weight, and IQ in children. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was performed on 300 students. Conventional measuring instruments were used for anthropometric measurements. Body weight and skull dimensions were measured. Then, using the appropriate formulas, the volume and weight of the brain and the brain index were measured. Results: The Pearson correlation coefficient confirmed a weak correlation between the amounts of IQ and anthropometric dimension in female samples. The mean head circumference of males was 2 cm above the mean head circumference of females. Compared to the central index and the dispersion, anthropometric dimensions were significant between boys and girls. According to the analysis of neural network, the anthropometric dimensions of head height, brain weight, head width, and brain index in boys and anthropometric dimensions around the head volume of head width and head height in girls were the most important in relation to IQ. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that there was a significant statistical difference between the central index and the distribution of anthropometric dimensions in boys and girls. Moreover, there was not a significant relationship between IQ and anthropometric dimensions of the body. In girls, there was a weak correlation between IQ and head width, head height, brain volume, and brain weight.

Abstract Background Weight is critical for the medical management of infants; however, scales can be unavailable or inaccessible in some practice settings. We recently developed and validated a robust infant weight estimation method based on chest circumference (CC) and head circumference (HC). This study was designed to determine the human factors (HF) experience with, and predictive performance of, an infant weight estimation device that implements this method. Methods Prospective, multi-center, observational, masked study of 486 preterm and term infants (0–90 days) assessed by 15 raters. Raters measured the infant using calibrated scales/measures and masked versions of the device. Raters also evaluated critical tasks associated with device use. Mean error (ME) and mean percentage error (MPE) were used to assess predictive performance. Result Among 486 infants enrolled (36.8 ± 4.0 weeks gestational age, 31.5 ± 28.6 days postnatal age), predicted weight correlated highly with actual weight (r = 0.97, ME: − 69 ± 257 g, MPE: − 1.3 ± 6.9%). Predicted weight was within 10 and 15% of actual weight in 86 and 99%, of infants. HF errors were low, 0.1–0.8% depending on task. In all cases raters were confident or very confident in their measurements. Conclusion The device was statistically equivalent to the method on which it was based and approximated weight with acceptable variance from the true weight. HF data suggest the device is easy to use. This device can be used to estimate weight in infants when calibrated scales are impractical or unavailable.

Context: Growth is an important biological process by which an individual reaches a point of complete physical development. Growth monitoring of a child is a very important utility to detect the deviation from normal growth. In India, for children below 2 years of age WHO multicentre growth reference study (MGRS) 2006 charts are being used for growth monitoring, which were prepared by measuring children from six different countries who were raised in optimum conditions of health and nutrition. Aim: This study was carried out to verify the appropriateness of the WHO MRGS 2006 charts to monitor the growth of Indian children who are below 2 years of age. Settings and Design: The study was carried out in a tertiary care hospital in Pune, Maharashtra. Materials and Methods: A total of 1947 children [1089 boys (55.9%)] were measured for weight, length and head circumference. Z score for each observed value was calculated according the similar but gender-specific WHO MGRS 2006 growth charts. Statistical Analysis Used: The age- and sex-specific Z-scores or standard deviation scores along with prevalence were obtained for each study parameter using WHO standards. Results: A total of 24.08%, 21.31%, and 20.54% of the children were classified as underweight, stunted and microcephalic respectively when compared to the WHO MGRS 2006 growth charts. Conclusion: The WHO MGRS 2006 charts may not be appropriate for growth monitoring of Indian children below 2 years of age and there is a need formulate growth charts which can reflect the growth of Indian children.

Background and Objectives: Anthropometric indices, especially weight, provide useful information for the care and treatment of newborn infants and can be used to identify infants at risk. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the mean weight, height and head circumference measurements of infants and some related factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed to investigate the anthropometric indices (weight, height and head circumference), demographic characteristics, and delivery data of 1484 newborns in 2016 using multi-stage sampling. Moreover, the predictors of these indices were analyzed using a linear regression model. Results: The mean weight, height and head circumference of the newborn infants was 3185 ± 465 g, 49.92 ± 2.92 cm, and 34.58 ± 2.29 cm respectively, and 7% of newborns were low birth weight. The current typical practice for measuring the head circumference of under-five children is by using a measuring tape. However, it may create some difficulties as children cry and move during measurement, leading to less accurate results. Accurate head circumference measurement is essential for assessing brain development and early detection of brain development disorders. Therefore, a more accurate device to measure head circumference is needed. Noviemeter is a non-touch digitalized head circumference measuring device that enables easier measurement in under-five children. As a new tool, noviemeter’s accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity must be determined. This study aimed to analyze the difference in the head of under-five children circumference measurement results between a typical measuring tape as the gold standard and noviemeter and determine the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the noviemeter. It was a cross-sectional analytical study using cluster random sampling on 72 under-five children in the work area of Guntung Payung Public Health, South Kalimantan, during August 2020. The measurement was performed twice, first using a measuring tape and, second, using a noviemeter. Data were analyzed statistically using the dependent t test and diagnostic test. No significant difference was found between the results of the two measuring devices (p=0.257). The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the noviemeter were 87.0%, 88.4%, and 91.8%, respectively. Thus, noviemeter has good sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy as an easier alternative device to measure head circumference in under-five children. UJI DIAGNOSTIK NOVIEMETER SEBAGAI ALAT PENGUKUR LINGKAR KEPALA BALITA Praktik pengukuran lingkar kepala balita yang umum dilakukan saat ini adalah dengan menggunakan pita ukur. Akan tetapi, hal itu dapat menimbulkan beberapa kesulitan karena anak menangis dan bergerak selama pengukuran yang menyebabkan hasil yang kurang akurat. Pengukuran lingkar kepala yang akurat sangat penting untuk menilai perkembangan otak dan deteksi dini gangguan perkembangan otak. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan alat yang lebih akurat untuk mengukur lingkar kepala. Noviemeter merupakan alat pengukur lingkar kepala digital non-sentuh yang memungkinkan pengukuran lebih mudah pada anak balita. Sebagai alat baru, akurasi, sensitivitas, dan spesifisitas noviemeter harus ditentukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis perbedaan hasil pengukuran lingkar kepala balita antara pita ukur tipikal sebagai baku emas dan noviemeter serta mengetahui akurasi, sensitivitas, dan spesifisitas dari noviemeter tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah cross-sectional analytical dengan menggunakan cluster random sampling pada 72 balita di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Guntung Payung Kalimantan Selatan selama bulan Agustus 2020. Pengukuran dilakukan dua kali, pertama menggunakan pita pengukur dan kedua menggunakan noviemeter. Data dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan uji t dependen dan uji diagnostik. Tidak ditemukan perbedaan yang signifikan antara hasil kedua alat ukur (p=0,257). Sensitivitas, spesifisitas, dan akurasi noviemeter masing-masing adalah 87,0%; 88,4%; dan 91,8%. Dengan demikian, noviemeter memiliki sensitivitas, spesifisitas, dan akurasi yang baik sebagai alat alternatif yang lebih mudah untuk mengukur lingkar kepala pada anak balita.

Background Every antenatal woman and her treating doctor aim for a healthy newborn. In obstetrics, accurately determining the gestational age (GA) is a critical aspect of managing pregnancy and evaluating fetal growth and development. The transcerebellar diameter (TCD) is the greatest transverse measurement of the fetal cerebellum. The growth of the cerebellum is minimally affected by fluctuations in growth, making the TCD the most reliable measurement for predicting GA. The purpose of the present research is to determine the accuracy of TCD in estimating GA in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Materials and methods The study included 500 antenatal women at 18-40 weeks of gestation. We also measured TCD in addition to routine ultrasound parameters like biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL). We used IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22 (Released 2013; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States) for statistical analysis. The collected data was subjected to statistical tests, including Pearson's correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination. We conducted a regression analysis and used correlation coefficients to compare each ultrasound-measured parameter with the GA. Results The current research demonstrates a significant linear relationship between the TCD and GA (r = 0.9865; p = 0.0001), a strong association between BPD and GA (r = 0.9541; p = 0.0001), between HC and GA (r = 0.9613; p = 0.0001), between AC and GA (r = 0.9489; p = 0.0001), and between FL and GA (r = 0.9697; p = 0.0001). TCD showed the best correlation with GA among all the biometric parameters. TCD showed a correct assessment of GA by the last menstrual period (LMP) in 479 (95.8%) antenatal women. Conclusion The current research concludes that the TCD can be utilized as an independent measure to determine GA in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, particularly in cases where the LMP is unknown, no dating scan has been performed in the first trimester, initial assessment taking place in the third trimester and in fetuses with variations in head shape such as dolichocephaly and brachycephaly., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Background: Optimal management of fetuses diagnosed as small for gestational age based on an estimated fetal weight of <10th percentile represents a major clinical problem. The standard approach is to increase fetal surveillance with serial biometry and antepartum testing to assess fetal well-being and timing of delivery. Observational studies have indicated that maternal rest in the left lateral position improves maternal cardiac output and uterine blood flow. However, maternal bed rest has not been recommended based on the results of a randomized clinical trial that showed that maternal rest does not improve fetal growth in small-for-gestational-age fetuses. This study was conducted to revisit this question., Objective: This study aimed to determine whether maternal bed rest was associated with an increase in the fetal biometric parameters that reflect growth after the diagnosis of a small-for-gestational-age fetus., Study Design: A retrospective study was conducted on fetuses who were diagnosed as small for gestational age because of an estimated fetal weight of <10th percentile for gestational age. The mothers were asked to rest in the left lateral recumbent position. Fetal biometry was performed 2 weeks after the diagnosis. All fetuses before entry into the study had a previous ultrasound that demonstrated an estimated fetal weight of >10th percentile. To assess the response to bed rest, the change in fetal biometric parameters (estimated fetal weight, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length) after the recommendation of bed rest was computed for 2 periods: (1) before the diagnosis of a weight of <10th percentile vs at the time of diagnosis of a weight of <10th percentile and (2) at the time of diagnosis of a weight of <10th percentile vs 2 weeks after maternal bed rest. For repeated measures, proportions were compared using the McNemar test, and percentile values were compared using the Bonferroni Multiple Comparison Test. A P value of <.05 was considered significant. To describe changes in the estimated fetal weight without bed rest, 2 control groups in which the mothers were not placed on bed rest after the diagnosis of a small-for-gestational-age fetus were included., Results: A total of 265 fetuses were observed before and after maternal bed rest. The following were observed in this study: (1) after 2 weeks of maternal rest, 199 of 265 fetuses (75%) had a fetal weight of >10th percentile; (2) the median fetal weight percentile increased from 6.8 (interquartile range, 4.4-8.4) to 18.0 (interquartile range, 9.5-29.5) after 2 weeks of bed rest; (3) similar trends were noted for the head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. In the groups of patients who were not asked to be on bed rest, a reassignment to a weight of >10th percentile at a follow-up examination only occurred in 7 of 37 patients (19%) in the Texas-Michigan group and 13 of 111 patients (12%) in the Colorado group compared with the bed rest group (199/265 [75%]) (P<.001)., Conclusion: Patients who were prescribed 2 weeks of bed rest after the diagnosis of a fetal weight of <10th percentile had an increase in weight of >10th percentile in 199 of 265 fetuses (75%). This increase in fetal weight was significantly higher than that in the 2 control groups in which bed rest was not prescribed. Background: Preterm infants who leave the intrauterine environment early are deprived of tactile stimuli. This affects the physical, emotional and social developments of infants and their physical growth parameters such as weight, height and head circumference negatively., Aim: This research was conducted to determine the effects of massage on the development of preterm infants., Material-Method: This research was conducted as randomized controlled research with two groups (massage-control). The infants in the intervention group received massage for 30 days. Height, weight and head circumference values of the infants were recorded on days 5, 10, 20 and 30. Amount of feeding was recorded before intervention, on day 15 after intervention and on day 30 after intervention. Discharge times of the infants were recorded according to groups., Results: A significant difference was found in height and weight of the preterm infants on days 20 and 30 when compared with the control group. Discharge time of the infants in the massage group was found to be 10 days shorter on average when compared with the control group. Significant difference was also found between day 15 and 30 in terms of amount of feeding., Conclusion: Massage was found to have significant effects on physical growth parameters such as height, weight and head circumference. It was found that massage increased amount of feeding and weight intake in infants and decreased discharge time. In this case, hospital cost per infant may be reduced., (Copyright © 2023. Introduction: Human physical growth, biological maturation, and intelligence have been documented as increasing for over 100 years. Comparing the timing of secular trends in these characteristics could provide insight into what underlies them. However, they have not been examined in parallel in the same cohort during different developmental phases. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine secular trends in body height, weight, and head circumference, biological maturation, and intelligence by assessing these traits concurrently at four points during development: the ages of 4, 9, 14, and 18 years., Methods: Data derived from growth measures, bone age as an indicator of biological maturation, and full-scale intelligence tests were drawn from 236 participants of the Zurich Longitudinal Studies born between 1978 and 1993. In addition, birth weight was analyzed as an indicator of prenatal conditions., Results: Secular trends for height and weight at 4 years were positive (0.35 SD increase per decade for height and an insignificant 0.27 SD increase per decade for weight) and remained similar at 9 and 14 years (height: 0.46 SD and 0.38 SD increase per decade; weight: 0.51 SD and 0.51 SD increase per decade, respectively) as well as for weight at age 18 years (0.36 SD increase per decade). In contrast, the secular trend in height was no longer evident at age 18 years (0.09 SD increase per decade). Secular trends for biological maturation at 14 years were similar to those of height and weight (0.54 SD increase per decade). At 18 years, the trend was non-significant (0.38 SD increase per decade). For intelligence, a positive secular trend was found at 4 years (0.54 SD increase per decade). In contrast, negative secular trends were observed at 9 years (0.54 SD decrease per decade) and 14 years (0.60 SD decrease per decade). Craniosynostosis is an underdiagnosed complication associated with hypophosphatemic rickets. The study aims to describe the clinical and auxological characteristic of children with hypophosphatemic rickets and craniosynostosis, describe the usual treatment, and compare the characteristics with those of children without craniosynostosis. An observational and retrospective cohort study was conducted. Clinical notes and cranial images were reviewed. Out of 96 children, only the 50 patients who had skull images were included. Out of 50 patients, 26 (15 males) had craniosynostosis (52%). No differences were observed in birth size, age, height, body proportions, alkaline phosphatase, serum phosphate, or percent tubular reabsorption of phosphate at first appointment among children with or without craniosynostosis. Among patients with craniosynostosis, dolichocephaly was prevalent. The sagittal suture was affected in all patients with craniosynostosis, with 19 of 26 children (73%) affected with isolated scaphocephaly. Pan-sutural craniosynostosis was present in 7 children (27%). None of the children had microcephaly, 7 of them presented macrocephaly and, in the remaining subjects, head circumference was normal. Five patients had undergone at least 1 cranial remodeling surgery. One patient with craniosynostosis was diagnosed with a Chiari I malformation. Molecular characterization of PHEX gene was performed in 14 cases. Craniosynostosis is an underdiagnosed complication of hypophosphatemic rickets. Many patients with normal head size and growth may go undiagnosed, thus it is important to consider this association for early diagnosis and possible surgical treatment. This study explored the physical and clinical phenotype of Bangladeshi children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A totally of 283 children who were referred for screening and administered Module 1 of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) were included. Overall, 209 met the ADOS algorithmic cutoff for ASD. A trend for greater weight and head circumference was observed in children with ASD versus non-ASD. Head circumference was significantly (p < 0.03) larger in ASD males compared with non-ASD males. A trend was also observed for symptom severity, higher in females than males (p = 0.068), with further analyses demonstrating that social reciprocity (p < 0.014) and functional play (p < 0.03) were significantly more impaired in ASD females than males. Background: Perinatal stroke is a leading cause of hemiparetic cerebral palsy and lifelong disability. Neurodevelopmental outcomes are difficult to predict and markers of long-term poor outcome continue to be investigated. Deceleration in growth of head circumference has been associated with worse developmental outcomes in neonatal brain injury. We hypothesized that perinatal stroke would result in decreased rates of head growth during childhood that would be associated with worse developmental outcomes. Methods: Patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–confirmed neonatal arterial ischemic stroke and arterial presumed perinatal ischemic stroke were identified from a population-based research cohort (Alberta Perinatal Stroke Project). Demographics and occipital-frontal circumference data were collected from medical records. Head growth was compared to typically developing control charts using a 2-tailed t test. The Fisher exact test was used to examine associations between Pediatric Stroke Outcome Measures (PSOM) scores and occipital-frontal head circumference. Results: Three hundred fifteen occipital-frontal head circumference measurements were collected from 102 patients (48 female, 54 male), over a median of 3.2 years (standard deviation = 5.18, range = 0-18.3). After 3 months for female patients and 1 year for male patients, occipital-frontal head circumference deviated and remained below normal growth trajectories (P <.05) with a large effect size (Cohen d >0.8). Poor outcome (PSOM ≥ 1) was associated with smaller occipital-frontal head circumference (P <.05). Conclusion: Head growth deceleration is observed in children with perinatal arterial ischemic stroke and is associated with poor outcome. Aim: To develop reference growth charts for body mass index (BMI), weight, length and head circumference in children born extremely preterm (EPT) or very preterm (VPT) with a birth weight <1500 g. Methods: We analysed EPT and VPT children from the German Neonatal Network born between 2009 and 2013 without chronic diseases or medications influencing growth. These data of EPT and VPT datasets were split into a training dataset and a validation dataset. In the validation dataset, data from 385 EPT and 491 VPT children from birth to age 6 years were analysed to calculate growth charts. Results: The percentiles of length of EPT and VPT children were comparable to German reference percentiles. The BMI peak in infancy was attenuated, and BMI was lower in all the EPT and VPT children analysed. From 2 years until 6 years of age, head circumference was lower in EPT and VPT boys and girls. Conclusion: Deficits in height described in EPT cohorts born during the 1980 s and 1990 s were not seen in our cohort. However, EPT and VPT born children showed growth patterns that differed from national reference curves for BMI. ObjectiveAlthough early brain overgrowth is frequently reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the relationship between ASD and head circumference (HC) is less clear, with inconsistent findings from longitudinal studies that include community controls. Our aim was to examine whether head growth in the first 3 years differed between children with ASD from a high-risk (HR) sample of infant siblings of children with ASD (by definition, multiplex), HR siblings not diagnosed with ASD, and low-risk (LR) controls.MethodParticipants included 442 HR and 253 LR infants from 12 sites of the international Baby Siblings Research Consortium. Longitudinal HC data were obtained prospectively, supplemented by growth records. Random effects nonlinear growth models were used to compare HC in HR infants and LR infants. Additional comparisons were conducted with the HR group stratified by diagnostic status at age 3: ASD (n = 77), developmental delay (DD; n = 32), and typical development (TD; n = 333). Nonlinear growth models were also developed for height to assess general overgrowth associated with ASD.ResultsThere was no overall difference in head circumference growth over the first 3 years between HR and LR infants, although secondary analyses suggested possible increased total growth in HR infants, reflected by the model asymptote. Analyses stratifying the HR group by 3-year outcomes did not detect differences in head growth or height between HR infants who developed ASD and those who did not, nor between infants with ASD and LR controls.ConclusionHead growth was uninformative as an ASD risk marker within this HR cohort.

Background and Objectives: There is a debate regarding the preferred intravenous (IV) access for newborns. Our aim was to study practices regarding the choice of vascular access and outcomes. Methods: A seven-month prospective observational study on IV lines used in all newborns admitted to Bnai Zion Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Results: Of 120 infants followed, 94 required IV lines. Infants born at ≤32 weeks gestation, or with a head circumference ≤29 cm were more likely to require two or more IV lines or a central line for the administration of parenteral nutrition or medications for longer periods. However, central lines (umbilical or peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC)) were not associated with better nutritional status at discharge based on weight z-scores. Only one complication was noted—a central line-associated bloodstream infection in a PICC. Conclusions: Our data suggest preferring central IV access for preterm infants born at ≤32 weeks or with a head circumference ≤29 cm. We encourage other NICUs to study their own data and draw their practice guidelines for preferred IV access (central vs. peripheral) upon admission to the NICU.

Background: The monitoring of head circumference (HC) is essential to early detect any conditions affecting its growth in early childhood. A positive secular trend and regional specificities in HC suggested the need to provide updated national HC reference growth charts. Methods: We extracted all growth data collected from 42 primary-care physicians from across the French metropolitan territory who used the same electronic medical-records software. We selected HC measurements up to age five years for all children who were born after 1990 with birth weight > 2500 g. We derived new HC growth charts by using Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape, then externally validated them until 30 months of age by comparison with the national population-based Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) birth cohort and compared them to previous French and WHO growth charts. Findings: With 973,869 HC measurements from 157,762 children, new calibrated HC growth charts from birth to age five years were generated. The new HC growth charts showed good external fit by comparison with the ELFE birth cohort. As compared with the new HC growth charts, the previous French and WHO growth charts mean HC z-scores were, respectively, -0.4 and -0.6 SD for girls and -0.2 and -0.6 SD for boys. Interpretation: We produced and validated national calibrated HC growth charts by using a novel big-data approach applied to data routinely collected in clinical practice. Comparison with previous French and WHO growth charts confirmed a positive secular trend since the 1960s and regional specificities. Background: Postnatal brain growth is an important predictor of neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants. A new reliable proxy for brain volume is cranial volume, which can be measured routinely by 3-D laser scanning. The aim of this study was to develop reference charts for normal cranial volume in newborn infants at different gestational ages starting from late preterm for both sexes.Methods: Cross-sectional cohort study in a German university hospital, including singleton, clinically stable, neonates born after 34 weeks of gestation. Cranial volume was measured in the first week of life by a validated 3-D laser scanner. Cranial volume data was modeled to calculate percentile values by gestational age and birth weight and to develop cranial volume reference charts for girls and boys separately.Results: Of the 1,703 included infants, 846 (50%) were female. Birth weights ranged from 1,370 to 4,830 grams (median 3,370). Median cranial volume ranged from 320 [interquartile range (IQR) 294–347] ml at 34 weeks to 469 [IQR 442–496] ml at 42 weeks and was higher in boys than in girls.Conclusions: This study presents the first reference charts of cranial volume which can be used in clinical practice to monitor brain growth between 34 and 42 weeks gestation in infants.

Objectives: To determine whether decreased fetal growth velocity precedes antepartum fetal death and to evaluate whether fetal growth velocity is a better predictor of antepartum fetal death compared to a single fetal biometric measurement at the last available ultrasound scan prior to diagnosis of demise.Methods: This was a retrospective, longitudinal study of 4285 singleton pregnancies in African-American women who underwent at least two fetal ultrasound examinations between 14 and 32 weeks of gestation and delivered a liveborn neonate (controls; n = 4262) or experienced antepartum fetal death (cases; n = 23). Fetal death was defined as death diagnosed at ≥ 20 weeks of gestation and confirmed by ultrasound examination. Exclusion criteria included congenital anomaly, birth at < 20 weeks of gestation, multiple gestation and intrapartum fetal death. The ultrasound examination performed at the time of fetal demise was not included in the analysis. Percentiles for estimated fetal weight (EFW) and individual biometric parameters were determined according to the Hadlock and Perinatology Research Branch/Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (PRB/NICHD) fetal growth standards. Fetal growth velocity was defined as the slope of the regression line of the measurement percentiles as a function of gestational age based on two or more measurements in each pregnancy.Results: Cases had significantly lower growth velocities of EFW (P < 0.001) and of fetal head circumference, biparietal diameter, abdominal circumference and femur length (all P < 0.05) compared to controls, according to the PRB/NICHD and Hadlock growth standards. Fetuses with EFW growth velocity < 10th percentile of the controls had a 9.4-fold and an 11.2-fold increased risk of antepartum death, based on the Hadlock and customized PRB/NICHD standards, respectively. At a 10% false-positive rate, the sensitivity of EFW growth velocity for predicting antepartum fetal death was 56.5%, compared to 26.1% for a single EFW percentile evaluation at the last available ultrasound examination, according to the customized PRB/NICHD standard.Conclusions: Given that 74% of antepartum fetal death cases were not diagnosed as small-for-gestational age (EFW < 10th percentile) at the last ultrasound examination when the fetuses were alive, alternative approaches are needed to improve detection of fetuses at risk of fetal death. Longitudinal sonographic evaluation to determine growth velocity doubles the sensitivity for prediction of antepartum fetal death compared to a single EFW measurement at the last available ultrasound examination, yet the performance is still suboptimal. © 2020 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Background: Head circumference (HC) measurement is routinely not performed in early childhood and there is conflicting information about its utility in literature. The current study analyses the association between HC at two years of age and cognition at two and five years of age. Methods: A community based birth-cohort recruited between 2010 and 2012 was followed up till five years of age in an urban slum in Vellore, India. Children were recruited at birth after informed parental consent by consecutive sampling using eligibility criteria of healthy new-born, singleton pregnancy and family's availability in the study area during follow-up. HC measured at two years of age was used as the exposure variable to calculate association with cognition at both two and five years of age. Cognitive domain of Bayley scale of infant development was used at two years of age and Wechsler Preschool Primary Scales of Intelligence at five years. Results: Of the 251 enrolled children, 138 (55%) were girls and 71 (30%) belonged to lower socioeconomic status. At 2 years, 8.81% of children had HC < − 3SD. Compared to children with HC z-scores ≥ − 2 SD, those with measurements < − 3 SD had a lower cognition scores by − 2.21 [95% CI: − 3.87 - -0.56] at 2 years. Also, children with HC < − 3 SD at two years scored significantly lower scores in cognitive domains of verbal, − 7.35 [95% CI: − 11.78 - -2.92] and performance, − 7.07 [95% CI: − 11.77 - -2.36] intelligence at five years. Conclusions: This study showed that smaller HC at 2 years of age was negatively associated with cognition at both 2 and 5 years of age. Early childhood HC measurements can be utilised as a cheaper screening tool to identify children at risk in LMIC settings. Further studies can confirm these findings in diverse settings. We performed a cross-sectional study on anthropometric and laboratory characteristics of inhabitants of Rampasasa (Flores, Indonesia). Adults were categorised according to ancestry into three groups: pygmoid (P/P, offspring of pygmoid parents, n=8), mixed pygmoid (P/N, offspring of pygmoid and non-pygmoid parents, n=12) and non-pygmoid (N/N, n=10). Children (n=28) were P/N. Measurements included height, weight, sitting height, arm span, head circumference, haematological analysis and serum albumin, calcium, vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3). Pubertal stage and bone age was assessed in children. Anthropometric data were expressed as standard deviation score (SDS) for age. IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio were expressed as SDS for age, bone age and pubertal stage. Mean height SDS showed a gradient from P/P (−4.0) via P/N (−3.2) to N/N (−2.3) (−3.4, −3.1 and −2.2 adjusted for age-associated shrinking). Sitting height and head circumference showed similar gradients. Serum IGF-I SDS was similar among groups (approximately −1 SDS). IGFBP-3 SDS tended toward a gradient from P/P (−1.9) via P/N (−1.5) to N/N (−1.1), but IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio was normal in all groups. In P/P and P/N, mean head circumference SDS was >2 SD greater than mean height SDS. Children showed a progressive growth failure and bone age delay, delayed female pubertal onset and an initial low serum IGF-I, normal IGFBP-3 and low IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio. P/P showed proportionate short stature with relative macrocephaly and relatively low IGFBP-3; P/N presented an intermediate pattern. Background: Up to now, 3 epidemiological studies have shown clear inverse associations between prenatal acrylamide exposure and birth size. In addition to studying the association between acrylamide and birth size, we investigated the interaction between acrylamide and polymorphisms in acrylamide-metabolising genes, with the aim of probing the causality of the inverse relationship between acrylamide and fetal growth.Methods: We investigated the association between prenatal acrylamide exposure (acrylamide and glycidamide hemoglobin adduct levels (AA-Hb and GA-Hb) in cord blood) and birth weight, length and head circumference in 443 newborns of the ENVIRONAGE (ENVIRonmental influence ON AGEing in early life) birth cohort. In addition, we studied interaction with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP2E1, EPHX1 and GSTP1, using multiple linear regression analysis.Results: Among all neonates, the body weight, length and head circumference of neonates in the highest quartile was - 101 g (95% CI: - 208, 7; p for trend = 0.12), - 0.13 cm (95% CI: - 0.62, 0.36; p for trend = 0.69) and - 0.41 cm (- 0.80, - 0.01; p for trend = 0.06) lower, respectively, compared to neonates in the lowest quartile of AA-Hb in cord blood, For GA-Hb, the corresponding effect estimates were - 222 g (95% CI: - 337, - 108; p for trend = 0.001), - 0.85 (95% CI: - 1.38, - 0.33; p for trend = 0.02) and - 0.55 (95% CI: - 0.98, - 0.11; p for trend = 0.01), respectively. The associations for GA-Hb were similar or stronger in newborns of non-smoking mothers. There was no statistically significant interaction between acrylamide exposure and the studied genetic variations but there was a trend of stronger inverse associations with birth weight and head circumference among newborns with homozygous wildtypes alleles for the CYP2E1 SNPS and with variant alleles for a GSTP1 SNP (rs1138272).Conclusions: Prenatal dietary acrylamide exposure, specifically in the form of its metabolite glycidamide, was inversely associated with birth weight, length and head circumference. The interaction pattern with SNPs in CYP2E1, although not statistically significant, is an indication for the causality of this association. Other studies are needed to corroborate this finding. Abstract Background Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type III (Sanfilippo syndrome) comprises a group of rare, lysosomal storage diseases caused by the deficiency of one of four enzymes involved in the degradation of heparan sulfate. The clinical hallmark of the disease is severe neurological deterioration leading to dementia and death in the second decade of life. Adult MPS patients are generally of short stature. To date there is no clear description of the physical development of MPS III patients. The aim of this study was to document growth reference data for MPS III patients. We collected growth data of 182 German MPS III patients and were able to develop growth charts for this cohort. Growth curves for height, weight, head circumference, and body mass index were calculated and compared to German reference charts. Results Birth height, weight and head circumference were within the physiological ranges. Both genders were significantly taller than healthy children at 2 years of age, while only male patients were taller at the age of four. Growth velocity decelerated after the ages of 4.5 and 5 years for female and male patients, respectively. Both genders were significantly shorter than the reference group at the age of 17.5 years. Head circumference was larger compared to healthy matched controls within the first 2 years of life and remained enlarged until physical maturity. Conclusion MPS III is a not yet treatable severe neuro-degenerative disease, developing new therapeutic strategies might change the course of the disease significantly. The present charts contribute to the understanding of the natural history of MPS III. Specific growth charts represent an important tool for families and physicians as the expected height at physical maturity can be estimated and therapeutic effects can be monitored.

Background & Objectives: inappropriate diet and the lack of necessary nutrition receiving during pregnancy, effects on maternal and neonatal health. This study carried out to investigate the effect of maternal supplements during pregnancy on growth indices at birth. Material & Methods: This cohort study was carried out on part of Bandar Abbas Cohort study data. The main exposure in this study was the consumption of dietary supplements during pregnancy and the dependent variable was the growth indices of newborns. The adjusted relative risk index using a Modified Poisson Regression model was applied. All analysis were performed using the STATA software. Results: 196 of participants remained in the study. The age range of mothers was from 16 to 42 years old and the mean of that was 27.28 (± 5.62). 81, 84 and 149 of mothers had taken an iron supplement, multivitamins, and vitamin D irregularly respectively. 12.76%, 8.68%,18.88% of the newborns, had abnormal weight, height, and head circumference at birth respectively. The relative risk of low birth weight and consumption of multivitamin 2.65 was achieved. Also, the relative risks between low birth height and iron and multivitamin supplements were 3.54 and 4.56 respectively. Conclusion: There was a relationship between irregular consumption of iron and multivitamins during pregnancy with weight and height at birth, but there was no relationship between the consumption of nutritional supplements during pregnancy and the head circumference. Mothers' nutritional supplementation during pregnancy requires more attention.

Aim: The study was to determine the normal fetal lateral ventricular diameter using ultrasound at different gestational ages (GAs). Materials and Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional descriptive study of the fetal cerebral lateral ventricular diameter of 685 singleton fetuses. Measurement of the fetal lateral ventricular diameter was obtained from fetuses of pregnant mothers that met the inclusion criteria during the routine ultrasound scan in Calabar metropolis. A sufficient ultrasound gel was applied on the abdomen of the subject and scanning was done at different planes until a good ovoid shape of the fetal skull was achieved. Axial images at the level of the lateral ventricles were obtained. The widest part of the posterior lateral ventricle far from the transducer was measured more than once and the average value computed for each subject. Results: About 85.4% of the patients were multiparous while 14.6 were primipara. The ages of the pregnant mothers ranged from 20 to 35 years with a mean age of 28 ± 3 years. The male fetuses were 311 while the female was 374. The lateral ventricular diameter did not show any significant correlation with fetal characteristics such as gender, estimated fetal weight, and fetal head circumference throughout gestation. However, the fetal ventricular diameter had a weak but not statistically significant correlation with GA of the fetus (r, P = 0.13, 0.06). Conclusion: Our studies show that 10 mm is the acceptable upper limits of normal for fetal lateral ventricular diameter (FLVD) of fetuses in Southern Nigeria. Ventricular diameter out of this normal range in this region could be considered abnormal and may demand further investigations.

A descriptive cross sectional study to have normal values of the bead circumference of under one year old children in Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan had been done during january to February 1990. The sample size determined based on formula, was 356 (178 boys and 178 girls). Each sex group was devided proportionally by age in months. Only children with good nutritional status and middle to high socio economic level were included in this study. The mean value of the head circumference is still in the range of the mean of Nellhaus standard. Tbe Nellhaus standard can be used as a standard of bead circumference of under one year old children at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan.

Background: Early postnatal growth monitoring and nutrition assessment for preterm infants is a public health and clinical concern. We aimed to establish a set of postnatal growth monitoring curves of preterm infants to better help clinicians make in-hospital and post-discharge nutrition plan of these vulnerable infants. Methods: We collected weight, length and head circumference data from a nationwide survey in China between 2015 and 2018. Polynomial regression and the modified LMS methods were employed to construct the smoothed weight, length and head circumference growth curves. Results: We established the P3, P10, P25, P50, P75, P90, P97 reference curves of weight, length and head circumference that allowed for continuous use from 24 weeks of preterm birth to 50 weeks and developed a set of user-friendly growth monitoring charts. We estimated approximate ranges of weight gain per day and length and head circumference gains per week. Conclusions: Our established growth monitoring curves, which can be used continuously without correcting gestational age from 24 weeks of preterm birth to 50 weeks, may be useful for assessment of postnatal growth trajectories, definition of intrauterine growth retardation at birth, and classification of early nutrition status for preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Brain development follows a different trajectory in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) than in typically developing children. A proxy for neurodevelopment could be head circumference (HC), but studies assessing HC and its clinical correlates in ASD have been inconsistent. This study investigates HC and clinical correlates in the Simons Simplex Collection cohort. METHODS: We used a mixed linear model to estimate effects of covariates and the deviation from the expected HC given parental HC (genetic deviation). After excluding individuals with incomplete data, 7225 individuals in 1891 families remained for analysis. We examined the relationship between HC/genetic deviation of HC and clinical parameters. RESULTS: Gender, age, height, weight, genetic ancestry, and ASD status were significant predictors of HC (estimate of the ASD effect = .2 cm). HC was approximately normally distributed in probands and unaffected relatives, with only a few outliers. Genetic deviation of HC was also normally distributed, consistent with a random sampling of parental genes. Whereas larger HC than expected was associated with ASD symptom severity and regression, IQ decreased with the absolute value of the genetic deviation of HC. CONCLUSIONS: Measured against expected values derived from covariates of ASD subjects, statistical outliers for HC were uncommon. HC is a strongly heritable trait, and population norms for HC would be far more accurate if covariates including genetic ancestry, height, and age were taken into account. The association of diminishing IQ with absolute deviation from predicted HC values suggests HC could reflect subtle underlying brain development and warrants further investigation.

Abstract Background Despite considerable global efforts to reduce growth faltering in early childhood, rates of stunting remain high in many regions of the world. Current interventions primarily target nutrition-specific risk factors, but these have proven insufficient. The objective of this study was to synthesize the evidence on the relationship between active tobacco use during pregnancy and growth outcomes in children under five years of age. Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, six online databases were searched to identify studies published from January 1, 1980, through October 31, 2016, examining the association between active tobacco use during pregnancy and small-for-gestational age (SGA), length/height, and/or head circumference. Ecological studies were not included. A meta-analysis was conducted, and subgroup analyses were carried out to explore the effect of tobacco dosage. Results Among 13,189 studies identified, 210 were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review, and 124 in the meta-analysis. Active tobacco use during pregnancy was associated with significantly higher rates of SGA (pooled adjusted odds ratio [AORs] = 1.95; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.76, 2.16), shorter length (pooled weighted mean difference [WMD] = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.41, 0.44), and smaller head circumference (pooled WMD = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.29) at birth. In addition, a dose-response effect was evident for all growth outcomes. Conclusion Tobacco use during pregnancy may represent a major preventable cause of impaired child growth and development.

Background Brain volume is associated with dementia and depression in the elderly. An easy way to predict relative brain volume is to measure head circumference. In this study, we investigated the relationship between head circumference and cognition as well as depression in a non-demented elderly community. Methods Baseline and follow-up surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2010. At baseline, community residents aged 65 years or over (n=382) within a rural area of South Korea were screened for dementia and symptoms of depression and were followed using the same screening battery after 3 years (n=279). Data from anthropometric measurements (head circumference, height, and body weight), demographics, and blood tests were gathered. Neuropsychological tests, including the Korean version of mini-mental state examination (K-MMSE), clinical dementia rating (CDR) including the CDR-sum of boxes, the Korean version of instrumental activities of daily living, and geriatric depression scale (GDS), were performed. None of the 279 subjects followed were demented. Results Baseline performance on the K-MMSE and GDS was poorer for participants with smaller head circumferences. Follow-up performance on the MMSE was also poorer for participants with smaller head circumferences. Interestingly, participants with smaller head circumference showed worse GDS scores at baseline but on follow-up examination, participants with larger head circumference showed rapid worsening than those with smaller head circumference with marginal significance by ANOVA test. In regression coefficient analysis, GDS decline showed significant difference. Conclusion Head circumference was not associated with cognitive change but was associated with symptoms of depression in non-demented community residents.

Aim: The aim was to compare the performances of the World Health Organization (WHO) and population‐based (PB) references in the screening for hydrocephalus in infants aged <2 years. Methods: We collected 341 longitudinal head circumference (HC) measurements of hydrocephalic infants and 120 181 measurements of 15 145 healthy infants from primary care. The measurements were converted into z‐scores, and a new screening parameter, change in HC standard deviation score (SDS) over time (ΔHC SDS), was calculated. Comparisons were made using receiver operating characteristics analysis and linear mixed models. Results: The mean HC SDSWHO was 3.5 and the mean HC SDSPB was 2.9 in the hydrocephalic infants, and in healthy children, those numbers were 1.0 SDSWHO and 0 SDSPB, respectively. The best screening accuracy was obtained with the PB reference in combination with the ΔHC SDS parameter (AUC 0.89). The accuracy of the WHO standard could be improved to a similar level by customising the screening cut‐offs of HC SDS according to the population and combining screening parameters. Conclusions: Auxology alone was not sufficient for the screening of hydrocephalus. The WHO standard should be validated in the population, and population‐specific cut‐offs for normality defined before its introduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been observed that air pollution can affect newborn health due to the negative effects of pollutants on pregnancy development. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of maternal exposure to urban air pollution on head circumference (HC) at birth. Reduced head growth during pregnancy may be associated with neurocognitive deficits in childhood. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the association between maternal exposure to air pollution and HC at birth and to provide context with a systematic review to investigate this association. This was a prospective study of low-risk pregnant women living in São Paulo, Brazil. Exposure to pollutants, namely, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3), was measured during each trimester using passive personal samplers. We measured newborn HC until 24 h after birth. We used multiple linear regression models to evaluate the association between pollutants and HC while controlling for known determinants of pregnancy. To perform the systematic review, four different electronic databases were searched through November 2018: CENTRAL, EMBASE, LILACS, and MEDLINE. We selected longitudinal or transversal designs associating air pollution and HC at birth. Two reviewers evaluated the inclusion criteria and risk of bias and extracted data from the included papers. Thirteen studies were selected for the systematic review. We evaluated 391 patients, and we did not observe a significant association between air pollution and HC. Regarding the systematic review, 13 studies were selected for the systematic review, 8 studies showed an inverse association between maternal exposure to pollutants and HC, 4 showed no association, and one observed a direct association. In the city of São Paulo, maternal exposure to pollutants was not significantly associated with HC at birth. Background: Preterm infants in low- and middle-income countries are at high risk of poor physical growth, but their growth data are still scarce.Objectives: To describe the growth of Vietnamese preterm infants in the first 2 years, and to compare with references: World Health Organization (WHO) child growth standards, and healthy Southeast Asian (SEA) infants. Further, to assess the association between growth in the first year and neurodevelopment at 2 years corrected age (CA).Methods: We conducted a cohort study to follow up preterm infants discharged from a neonatal intensive care unit for 2 years. Weight, length and head circumference (HC) were measured at 3, 12 and 24 months CA. Neurodevelopment was assessed using Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-3rd Edition at 24 months CA.Results: Over 90% of the cohort showed catch-up weight at 3 months CA. Weight and length were comparable to healthy SEA but were lower than WHO standards. HC was significantly smaller than those of WHO standards with HC Z-scores steadily decreasing from -0.95 at 3 months CA to -1.50 at 24 months CA. Each one decrement of HC Z-score from 3 to 12 months CA was associated with nearly twice an increase in odds of mental delay at 24 months CA (odds ratio 1.89; 95% confidence interval 1.02-3.50).Conclusion: Vietnamese preterm infants exhibited early catch-up weight but poor head growth, which was associated with later delays in mental development.
