Abstract

Abstract: Quantum chemical calculations of the structures and cation-anion interaction of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium lactate ([Em-im][ LAC]) ion pair at the B3LYP/6-31++G** theoretical level were performed. The relevant geometrical characteristics, energy properties, intermolecular H-bonds (H-bonds), and calculated IR vibrations with respect to isolated ions were systematically discussed. The natural bond orbital (NBO) and atoms in molecule (AIM) analyses were also employed to understand the nature of the interactions between cation and anion. The five most stable geometries were verified by analyzing the relative energies and interaction energies. It was found that the most of the C-H…O intermolecular H-bonds interactions in five stable conformers have some covalent character in nature. The elongation and red shift in IR spectrum of C-H bonds which involve in H-bonds is proved by electron transfers from the lone pairs of the carbonyl O atom of [LAC]− to the C-H antibonding orbital of the [Emim]+. The interaction modes are more favorable when the carbonyl O atoms of [LAC]− interact with the C2-H of the imidazolium ring and the C-H of the ethyl group through the formation of triple H-bonds.

Abstract

Humidity-based power generation that converts internal energy of water molecules into electricity is an emerging approach for harvesting clean energy from nature. Here it is proposed that intrinsic gradient within a humidity field near sweating surfaces, such as rivers, soil, or animal skin, is a promising power resource when integrated with liquid-infused nanofluidics. Specifically, capillary-stabilized ionic liquid (IL, Omim+Cl-) film is exposed to the above humidity field to create a sustained transmembrane water-content difference, which enables asymmetric ion-diffusion across the nanoconfined fluidics, facilitating long-term electricity generation with the power density of ≈12.11 µW cm-2. This high record is attributed to the nanoconfined IL that integrates van der Waals and electrostatic interactions to block movement of Omim+ clusters while allowing for directional diffusion of moisture-liberated Cl+. This humidity gradient triggers large ion-diffusion flux for power generation indicates great potential of sweating surfaces considering that most of the earth is covered by water or soil. © 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene-based lamellar membranes bearing interlayers of tunable hydrophilicity are promising for high-performance water purification. The current challenge lies in how to engineer the pore wall's surface properties in the subnano-confinement environment while ensuring its high selectivity. Herein, poly(ionic liquid)s, equipped with readily exchangeable counter anions, succeeded as a hydrophilicity modifier in addressing this issue. Lamellar membranes bearing nanochannels of tailorable hydrophilicity are constructed via assembly of poly(ionic liquid)-armored MXene nanosheets. By shifting the interlayer galleries from being hydrophilic to more hydrophobic via simple anion exchange, the MXene membrane performs drastically better for both the permeance (by two-fold improvement) and rejection (≈99 %). This facile method opens up a new avenue for building 2D material-based membranes of enhancing molecular transport and sieving effect.

Abstract

High‐purity H2 production accompanied with a precise decarbonization opens an avenue to approach a carbon‐neutral society. Metal–organic framework nanosheet membranes provide great opportunities for an accurate and fast H2/CO2 separation, CO2 leakage through the membrane interlayer galleries decided the ultimate separation accuracy. Here we introduce low dose amino side groups into the Zn2(benzimidazolate)4 conformation. Physisorbed CO2 served as interlayer linkers, gently regulated and stabilized the interlayer spacing. These evoked a synergistic effect of CO2 adsorption‐assisted molecular sieving and steric hinderance, whilst exquisitely preserving apertures for high‐speed H2 transport. The optimized amino membranes set a new record for ultrathin nanosheet membranes in H2/CO2 separation (mixture separation factor: 1158, H2 permeance: 1417 gas permeation unit). This strategy provides an effective way to customize ultrathin nanosheet membranes with desirable molecular sieving ability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Stimuli-responsive materials have important applications in chemistry and chemical engineering. Here, we synthesized five different polyetheramine-fatty acids (PEFA) ionic liquids (ILs), possessing the dual stimuli-responsive ability to temperature and CO2. These PEFA ILs have reversible lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase behavior over a wide temperature range of 37–91 °C, and reversible heterogeneous-homogeneous phase transition towards the addition and removal of CO2. Furthermore, the droplet size of the IL—water mixture system increased from 6.5 to 21.0 nm as the temperature increased from 25 to 56 °C, and then recovered to 6.5 nm when the temperature decreased to 25 °C. The addition and removal of CO2 also reversibly modulated the droplet size of the system. Results from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra further showed that the temperature-dependent conformation of polyether amine chain in the cation dominates the temperature response, while the reversible formation of bicarbonate and fatty acids (FA) from CO2 and anion controls the CO2-based reversible phase transition. Molecular simulations revealed a microscopic response mechanism of the IL—water system to temperature and CO2, and a synergistic effect between the dual stimuli of temperature and CO2. These findings may provide a basis for the rational design and understanding of ILs-based stimuli-responsive materials and nanoreactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
