The effect of microbial activity on the deterioration of archaeological stone items is a worldwide issue, and conserving them with low-toxicity, ecologically benign and naturally biocides is a difficult undertaking. Molecular identification of the microbial communities from a deteriorated archaeological object (Ptahshepses stone statue) located from the Saqqara excavation, Giza, Egypt was recorded. Six essential oils (EOs) (black cumin, clove, geranium, lavender, lemongrass, and thyme) were tested for antimicrobial activity against six degrading fungal and bacterial species. Alternaria alternate, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Cladosporium halotolerans, Penicillium crustosum, and Trichoderma viride and three bacterial species, Pseudomonas protegens, P. putida, and Serratia odorifera, were isolated. Of the most effective EOs, thyme showed the highest inhibition percentage (143.4%) against Serratia odorifera, followed by P. putida (135%), and Pseudomonas protegens (131.5%). Lemongrass and clove EOs had minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.5 µL/mL to 2 µL/mL for all isolated deteriorated fungal and bacterial species, while the lowest efficiency EOs were lavender, geranium and black cumin. It can be concluded that thyme and lemongrass EOs have a potential use for protecting the Ptahshepses stone statue from microbial deterioration.

Oils extracted from Cymbopogon citratus, Lantana camara, Artemisia camphorata, and Imperata cylindrica plants were used as potential insecticides against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The phytochemical composition of the isolated oils was identified by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Oil contact toxicities were evaluated against the adults of S. oryzae. The activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and transaminases enzymes (AST) were measured. L. camara oil (LC50 = 9.81 mg/cm2) demonstrated the highest effect, followed by C. citratus oil (LC50 = 10.89 mg/cm2), A. camphorata EO (LC50 = 16.12 mg/cm2), and I. cylindrica oil (LC50= 36.85 mg/cm2) against the adults of S. oryzae. The inhibition percentages of AChE were 38.8, 41.7, 35.0, and 27.2%; ALP were 42.4, 49.3, 28.1, and 18.7%; AST were 33.9, 38.7, 20.8, and 11.8%; and ALT were 22.7, 30.5, 14.6, and 9.6% after treated S. oryzae with oils from C. citratus, L. camara, A. camphorata and I. cylindrica, respectively. The highest abundant compounds in C. citratus were geranial (25.95%), nerylacetal (8.85%), and neral (8.45%), in L. camara were caryophyllene (12.2%), and 3-elemene (8.89%), in A. camphorata were germacrene D-4-ol (20.83%), and borneol (19.47%), and in I. cylindrica were 5-phenylundecane (10.68%), and 6-phenyldodecane (8.70%).

The present study was performed during two successive seasons 2019 and 2020 to investigate the effect of the soil application of fulvic acid (FA), seaweed extract (SE), and their different combinations on vegetative growth, yield, and fruit quality of six-years-old guava (Psidium guajava L.) cv. ‘Maamoura’. The trees were planted 4 × 4 m2 apart in clay soil under a flood irrigation system. They were treated three times starting from mid-March with one-month intervals with the following treatments: Control (water only), 3 and 4 g/L FA, 3 and 4 g/L SE, and their different combinations; 3 g/L FA + 3 g/L SE, 3 g/L FA + 4 g/L SE, 4 g/L FA + 3 g/L SE, and 4 g/L FA + 4 g/L SE. The results clearly showed that the application of FA or SE solely or in combinations increased shoot length and diameter, as well as leaf chlorophyll compared with the control. The treatments also increased fruit set percentage, fruit yield, and fruit physical and chemical characteristics such as fruit weight, size, TSS%, total reduced and non-reduced sugars, as well as leaf mineral content, while they decreased the fruit acidity compared with the control in the two seasons.

Smart, environmentally friendly alternatives, i.e., frankincense and rice starch, are recommended for usage in modern paper conservation processes during the re-sizing process treatments. Different concentrations of frankincense and rice starch were applied to paper samples before and after ageing. Multiple analysis methods were performed to ensure the effectiveness of these materials. Promising results were found, but at varying degrees according to the type and concentration of the materials. Scanning electron microscopy illustrated that the frankincense particles were completely absorbed into the cell walls after ageing. Results indicated that there was no considerable change in pH before and after treatment or ageing; the best results for decreasing the acidity utilized a treatment with a mixture of frankincense and rice starch in a 2 to 1 ratio (F2S1). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy illustrated an increased CH2 region and decreased OH stretching as a result of the bonds formed from the starch and crystals formed by frankincense, which agreed with the increased coating and strength of the paper fibers. The total color change values of all the treated samples after ageing were less than 4.5. Frankincense was found to provide strength in supporting wood fibers.

Exogenous potassium (K + ) and endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) synergistically alleviate drought stress through regulating H + -ATPase activity, sugar metabolism and redox homoeostasis in tomato seedlings . Present work evaluates the role of K+ in the regulation of endogenous H2S signaling in modulating the tolerance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. Mill.) seedlings to drought stress. The findings reveal that exposure of seedlings to 15% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG) led to a substantial decrease in leaf K+ content which was associated with reduced H+-ATPase activity. Treatment with sodium orthovanadate (SOV, PM H+-ATPase inhibitor) and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA, K+ channel blocker) suggests that exogenous K+ stimulated H+-ATPase activity that further regulated endogenous K+ content in tomato seedlings subjected to drought stress. Moreover, reduction in H+-ATPase activity by hypotaurine (HT; H2S scavenger) substantiates the role of endogenous H2S in the regulation of H+-ATPase activity. Elevation in endogenous K+ content enhanced the biosynthesis of H2S through enhancing the synthesis of cysteine, the H2S precursor. Synergistic action of H2S and K+ effectively neutralized drought stress by regulating sugar metabolism and redox homoeostasis that resulted in osmotic adjustment, as witnessed by reduced water loss, and improved hydration level of the stressed seedlings. The integrative role of endogenous H2S in K+ homeostasis was validated using HT and TEA which weakened the protection against drought stress induced impairments. In conclusion, exogenous K+ and endogenous H2S regulate H+-ATPase activity which plays a decisive role in the maintenance of endogenous K+ homeostasis. Thus, present work reveals that K+ and H2S crosstalk is essential for modulation of drought stress tolerance in tomato seedlings.

A field trial was conducted to investigate the productivity of three bread wheat cultivars, namely Giza-168, Shandawel-1, and Misr-2, under different fertilization treatments, i.e., azotobacter inoculation, 25% nitrogen (N) + azotobacter, 50%N + azotobacter, 75%N + azotobacter, and 100%N of the recommended level (180 kg/ha). The treatments were laid in a split-plot design, and each was replicated three times. The findings showed that wheat cultivars examined in the two seasons exhibited significant variations (p ≤ 0.05) in plant height (PH, cm), number of tillers m−2 (NTM), number of spikelets per spike (NSS), 1000-grain weight (TGW, g), spike length (SL, cm), biological yield (BY, ton ha−1), grain yield (GY, ton ha−1), straw yield (SY, ton ha−1), harvest index (HI, %), protein content (PC, %), days to 50% heading (DTH), and chlorophyll content (CC, SPAD). As a result, Giza-168 had a higher GY (14%), HI (27%), and TGW (10%) than any of the other two cultivars in both growing seasons. Furthermore, Misr-2 exhibited the highest PH (16%), NTM (26%), NSS (28%), SL (10%), BY (30%), SY (46%), and CC (3%). The application of the two treatments of 100%N and N75% + azotobacter exhibited high and statistically similar performance, resulting in an increase in all studied traits by greater than 30–50% compared to the other three treatments. According to the findings of the current investigation, the application of N fertilizer combined with azotobacter increased wheat yield more than either solely azotobacter or N application. We concluded that the application of nitrogen combined with azotobacter reduced the quantity of applied nitrogen by 25%.

Productivity of maize (

In this study, 130 uniform ‘Flame Seedless’ grape trees were selected for and subjected to the same cultural practices. The trees were sprayed three times, before flowering, during full bloom, and three weeks later with the following treatments: control (water only), 250, 500, and 750 ppm glycine; 50, 100, and 150 ppm folic acid (FA); 2%, 4%, and 6% leaf moringa aqueous extract (MLAE); and their combinations. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of moringa leaf aqueous extract (MLAE) showed the presence of the phenolic compounds ellagic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, catechol, and gallic acid with values of 54.18, 18.79, 14, 12.32, and 12.12 mg/100 g, respectively. The obtained results showed that the foliar spraying of 250, 500, and 750 ppm glycine, 4% and 6% MLAE, and their combinations of glycine 500 ppm + FA 100 ppm + MLAE 4% and glycine 750 ppm + FA 150 ppm + MLAE 6% significantly increased the shoot length, shoot thickness, leaf chlorophyll content, yield, and fruit quality over the control. Glycine at 750 ppm was the best treatment followed by glycine at 500 ppm compared with the other applied treatments and the control in both experimental seasons.

Present investigation reports the role of calcium (Ca2+) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) crosstalk associated with Vigna radiata seedlings subjected to K+ deficient conditions under short-term (24 h) and long-term (72 h) NaCl stress. Perusal of the data reveals that under short-term NaCl stress an initial decline in K+ level led to the elevation in Ca2+ and H2S levels along with improvement in antioxidant system and reduction in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Under long-term NaCl stress a further decline in K+ content was deleterious that led to a lower K+/Na+ ratio. This was followed by reduction in antioxidant system along with excessive accumulation of ROS and methylglyoxal content, and increased membrane damage. However, supplementation of the seedling roots with Ca2+ enhanced biosynthesis of H2S through enhancing cysteine pool. The present findings suggest that synergistic action of Ca2+ and H2S induced the activity of H+-ATPase that created H+ gradient which in turn induced Na+/H+ antiport system that accelerated K+ influx and Na+ efflux. All of these together contributed to a higher K+/Na+ ratio, activation of antioxidative defense system, and maintenance of redox homeostasis and membrane integrity in Ca2+-supplemented stressed seedlings. Role of Ca2+ and H2S in the regulation of Na+/H+ antiport system was validated by the use of sodium orthovanadate (plasma membrane H+-ATPase inhibitor), tetraethylammonium chloride (K+ channel blocker), and amiloride (Na+/H+ antiporter inhibitor). Application of Ca2+-chelator EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis(b-aminoethylether)-N,N,Nʹ,Nʹ-tetraacetic acid) and H2S scavenger hypotaurine abolished the effect of Ca2+, suggesting the involvement of Ca2+ and H2S in the alleviation of NaCl stress. Moreover, use of EGTA and HT also substantiates the downstream functioning of H2S during Ca2+-mediated regulation of plant adaptive responses to NaCl stress. To sum up, present findings reveal the association of Ca2+ and H2S signaling in the regulation of ion homeostasis and antioxidant defense during K+-deficient NaCl stress.

In Egypt, water shortage has become a key limiting factor for agriculture. Water-deficit stress causes different morphological, physiological, and biochemical impacts on plants. Two field experiments were carried out at Etay El-Baroud Station, El-Beheira Governorate, Agriculture Research Center (ARC), Egypt, to evaluate the effect of potassium silicate (K-silicate) of maize productivity and water use efficiency (WUE). A split-plot system in the four replications was used under three irrigation intervals during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Whereas 10, 15, and 20 days irrigation intervals were allocated in main plots, while the three foliar application treatments of K-silicate (one spray at 40 days after sowing; two sprays at 40 and 60 days; and three sprays at 40, 60, and 80 days, and a control (water spray) were distributed in the subplots. All the treatments were distributed in 4 replicates. The results indicated that irrigation every 15 days gave the highest yield in both components and quality. The highly significant of (WUE) under irrigation every 20 days. Foliar spraying of K-silicate three times resulted in the highest yield. Even under water-deficit stress, irrigation every fifteen days combined with foliar application of K-silicate three times achieved the highest values of grain yield and its components. These results show that K-silicate treatment can increase WUE and produce high grain yield requiring less irrigation.

The acute toxicity from volatile toxin from the Limonia acidissima (La-VO) was evaluated on the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Screening of La-VO showed five major bioactive compounds with a major peak estragole. The mortality rate was significantly greater at 150 ppm La-VO. The lethal concentration (LC50) was observed at 65.24 ppm. Sub-lethal dosage of La-VO resulted in significant changes in developmental times. Enzymatic profile of larvae post treatment showed upregulation of CYP450 and GST levels. A maximum repellent activity was observed at 75 ppm La-VO at 98% up to 210 minutes. The La-VO provided evidence of insecticidal and toxicity to the mosquito.

Three natural extracted oils from Citrus reticulata peels, C. aurantifolia leaves, and Linum usitatissimum (linseeds) were used as antifungal agents against the growth of Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium chrysogenum. The following main compounds (determined via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) were found. The essential oil (EO) from C. aurantiifolia leaves contained limonene (22.96%), geranyl acetal (13.53%), and geraniol acetate (13.33%); the n-hexane oil from C. reticulata peels contained methyl-13-cyclopentyltridecanoate (16.74%), and D-limonene (16.06%); and linseed oil contained linoleic acid (27.36%), and oleic acid (19.01%). The inhibition of fungal growth significantly was reached 100% against A. flavus at all tested C. aurantifolia leaf EO concentrations and at a concentration of 2000 µL/mL for linseeds oil. The growth inhibition reached 100% against P. chrysogenum with C. aurantifolia leaf EO concentrations of 125-2000 µL/mL. Citrus reticulata peel EO had 100% growth inhibition of P. chrysogenum at concentrations of 2000 µL/mL and 1000 µL/mL, while linseeds oil had 100% growth inhibition at 2000 µL/mL. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that C. aurantifolia EO yielded the greatest thermal stability and color change protection to cotton pulp, while linseed oil was found to protect wood pulp-based and historical papers.

Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of drumstick, Moringa oleifera, leaves were evaluated in vitro to ascertain their principal active components and determine their immunostimulant, cytotoxic, antitumoral, bactericidal and antioxidant activities. Phytochemical screening of M. oleifera leaf extracts showed a greater abundance of phenolic and cyanogenic glycosides in aqueous than in ethanolic extracts, characterized by several flavonoids, condensed tannins and saponins. No significant effects on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) head-kidney leucocyte activities (phagocytic ability and capacity, respiratory burst and peroxidase) were detected after incubation for 24 h with different concentrations (0.001/1 mg mL−1) of either extract. In addition, the aqueous extract showed a marked cytotoxic effect on both SAF-1 (at doses above 0.01 mg mL−1) and PLHC-1 (at doses above 0.25 mg mL−1) cell lines. The ethanolic extract improved the viability of SAF-1 cells and decreased the viability of PLHC-1 cells when used at higher concentrations. Both the ethanolic and, particularly, the aqueous extracts showed significant bactericidal activity on pathogenic Vibrio anguillarum and Photobacterium damselae strains. The antiradical activity of M. oleifera, as determined by the ABTS assay, increased in a linear dose-response with increasing extract concentrations. The results as a whole for the cytotoxic, bactericidal and antioxidant activities of M. oleifera leaf extracts point to their possible use as additives in functional diets for farmed fish.

Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop that belongs to the family Solanaceae. Root-knot nematodes reflect the highly critical economically damaging genera of phytoparasitic nematodes on tomato plants. In this study, the eco-nematicide activity of freshwater green macroalga Cladophora glomerata aqueous extract and their synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) against root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne javanica was investigated on tomato plants. The formation and chemical structure of Ag-NPs was examined. The aqueous extract from C. glomerata was applied against the root-knot nematodes besides the biosynthesized green silver nanoparticles with 100, 75, 50, and 25% (S, S/2, S/3, S/4) concentrations. To investigate the plant response toward the Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles (GSNPs) treatment, expression profiling of Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase (PAL), Poly Phenol Oxidase (PPO), and Peroxidase (POX) in tomato were examined using Quantitative Real-Time PCR (Q-PCR). The results indicated that GSNPs from C. glomerata exhibited the highest eco-nematicide activity in the laboratory bioassay on egg hatchability and juveniles (J2S) mortality of M. javanica compared with the chemical commercial nematicide Rugby 60%. Also, results showed a significant reduction in galls number, egg masses, females per root system/plant, and mortality of juveniles. The results of PAL and PPO enzyme expression for the control plants remained relatively stable, while the plant inoculated with nematode M. javanica as well as the activity of genes in scope was increased from 14 to 28 Days after Nematode Inoculation (DANI). These activities were improved in inoculated plants and treated with C. glomerata extract and their green syntheses of Ag-NPs and the other plants treated with Rugby 60% (4 mL/L). The greatest activities of the three enzymes were evident after 14 days after the nematode inoculation. It can be concluded that the green synthesized nanoparticles using C. glomerata could be used as potent nematicides against M. javanica which induces the immune system to defend against nematode infection.

Strawberry is a non-climacteric fruit but exhibits a limited postharvest life due to rapid softening and decay. A strawberry coating that is natural and safe for human consumption can be used to improve the appearance and safeguard the fruits. In this study, 20% and 40% Aloe vera gel alone or in combination with 1% lemongrass essential oil (EO) was used as an edible coating for strawberries. After application of all the treatments, the strawberry fruits were stored at a temperature of 5 ± 1 °C at a relative humidity (RH) of 90%–95% for up to 16 days and all the parameters were analyzed and compared to control (uncoated fruits). The results show that A. vera gel alone or with lemongrass EO reduced the deterioration and increased the shelf life of the fruit. Treatment with A. vera gel and lemongrass EO decreased acidity and total anthocyanins and maintained fruit firmness. Treatment with A. vera gel 40% + lemongrass EO 1% led to the lowest weight loss, retained firmness and acidity, but increased the total soluble solids and total anthocyanins compared to uncoated fruits during storage of up to 16 days. The phenolic compounds of A. vera gel were analyzed by HPLC, and the most abundant compounds were found to be caffeic (30.77 mg/mL), coumaric (22.4 mg/mL), syringic (15.12 mg/mL), sinapic (14.05 mg/mL), ferulic (8.22 mg/mL), and cinnamic acids (7.14 mg/mL). Lemongrass EO was analyzed by GC–MS, and the most abundant compounds were identified as α-citral (neral) (40.10%) ꞵ-citral (geranial) (30.71%), γ-dodecalactone (10.24%), isoneral (6.67%), neryl acetal (5.64%), and linalool (1.77%). When the fruits were treated with 20% or 40% A. vera gel along with 1% lemongrass, their total phenolic content was maintained during the storage period (from 4 to 8 days). The antioxidant activity was relatively stable during the 8 days of cold storage of the fruits coated with A. vera gel combined with lemongrass EO because the activity of both 20% and 40% gel was greater than that for the other treatments after 12 days of storage in both experiments. Moreover, all the treatments resulted in lower numbers of total microbes at the end of the storage period compared with the control treatment. This study indicates that the use of Aloe vera gel with lemongrass EO as an edible coating considerably enhances the productivity of strawberry fruits and the treatment could be used on a commercial scale.

Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), versatile signaling molecules, play multiple roles in plant growth, physiological and biochemical processes under heavy metal stress. However, the mechanisms through which NO in association with endogenous H2S mediated hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) toxicity mitigation are still not fully understood. Therefore, we investigated the role of NO and H2S in sulfur (S)-assimilation and the effect of NO on endogenous H2S, and cysteine (Cys) biosynthesis and maintenance of cellular glutathione (GSH) pool in tomato seedlings under Cr(VI) stress. Cr(VI) toxicity caused an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS; O2•- and H2O2) formation and activity of chlorophyll (Chl) degrading enzyme [Chlorophyllase (Chlase)] and decrease in seedlings growth attributes, Chl a and b content, and activity of Chl synthesizing enzyme [δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD)], gas exchange parameters, S-assimilation, and Cys and H2S metabolism. An increase in the content of glycinebetaine (GB), total soluble carbohydrates (TSCs) and total phenols (TPls), and decrease in DNA damage and ROS in NO treated seedlings conferred Cr(VI) toxicity tolerance. Under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, the inclusion of H2S scavenger hypotaurine (HT) in growth medium containing NO validated the role of endogenous H2S in S-assimilation, H2S and Cys and GSH metabolism by withdrawing activity of enzymes involved in S-assimilation [adenosine 5-phosphosulfatereductase (APS-R), ATP-sulfurylase (ATP-S)], in the biosynthesis of H2S [L-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-CD) and D-cysteine desulfhydrase (D-CD)], Cys [O-acetylserin (thiol) lyase (OAST-L)], and GSH [glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GS)], and in antioxidant system. On the other hand, application of cPTIO [2-(4-32 carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide], a NO scavenger and HT diminished the effect of NO on internal H2S levels, Cys and glutathione homeostasis, and S-assimilation, which resulted in poor immunity against oxidative stress induced by Cr(VI) toxicity. The obtained results postulate that NO-induced internal H2S conferred tolerance of tomato seedlings to Cr(VI) toxicity and maintained better photosynthesis process and plant growth.

Nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule with diverse physiological functions, improves immunity of the plant against different environmental stresses. Heavy metal stress-induced structural and functional damages in cells are common consequences. Seed germination and seedlings development are crucial phases in the life cycle of a plant. The present experiment was designed to investigate how NO suppresses hexavalent chromium Cr(VI)-provoked impairment in the key processes during seed germination and seedlings development of tomato. This study reports that Cr(VI) stress significantly impaired seed germination attributes and the activity of hydrolyzing enzymes, such as α-amylase (α-A) and protease (Pr). However, exogenous NO donor sodium nitroprusside substantially improved seed germination parameters and upregulation of α-A and Pr. Furthermore, NO improved the content of nitrogen (N), NO, and proline (Pro), and modulated the activity of enzymes involved in Pro and N-assimilation. Under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, NO improved the content of metal ligation compounds (non-protein thiols and total thiols), ascorbate and glutathione (GSH), and maintained higher content of GSH in glutathione pool (GSH:GSSG) and suppressed the formation of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal and protein carbonylation, and electrolyte leakage. It may be concluded that NO improved the activity of hydrolyzing and Pro and N-metabolism enzymes. Application of NO also enhanced non-enzymatic antioxidants, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity under Cr(VI) toxicity conditions, thereby improved enhanced seed germination and seedlings vigor.

Our experiment was conducted during the seasons of 2018 and 2019 on 10-year-old "Anna" apple trees (Malus domestica L. Borkh) planted at 4 × 4 m apart in a clay soil under drench irrigation. Sixty uniform trees were selected and subjected to the same cultural practices during both seasons. Apple trees were sprayed three times as follows: before flowering, during full bloom, and 1 month later with the following treatments: control (water only); tryptophan at 25, 50, and 100 ppm; glycine at 25, 50, and 100 ppm; and their combinations, 25 ppm tryptophan + 25 ppm glycine, 50 ppm tryptophan + 50 ppm glycine, and 100 ppm tryptophan + 100 ppm glycine. The results demonstrated that the foliar spraying of "Anna" apple trees with glycine and tryptophan at 25, 50, and 100 ppm and their combinations significantly increased shoot length and diameter, leaf area, total chlorophyll, percentages of fruit set and yield, fruit physical and chemical characteristics, and leaf mineral composition of N, P, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, Mn, and B, whereas it reduced the fruit drop percentage in both seasons in comparison with control. Better results were obtained from the concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm which were more effective in both seasons in comparison with the concentration of 25 ppm. Moreover, the combination of 50 ppm glycine 50 ppm tryptophan was the best treatment and provided the highest results in both experimental seasons in comparison with the other applied treatments and control.

Ordinary kraft pulping of bagasse was adjusted by utilizing green liquor at the laboratory and research of Misr-Edfu Pulp, Writing and Printing Paper in a small pilot batch digester (Edfu, Aswan, Egypt) as an environmentally friendly method. Bagasse pulp was produced with and without green liquor, and the physical and mechanical properties of unbleached bagasse were assessed. The parameter states of cooking were completed utilizing antacid substance charge from 10% to 13%, cooking temperature from 160 to 170 °C, cooking time from 20 to 50 min, and solid to liquor ratio of 7:1 that was steady in all preliminaries. The results demonstrated the exploratory idea that green liquor can provide critical pulping advantages in comparison with customary kraft pulping. Screened pulp yield improved 2.6%, rejects content decreased 0.9%, kappa number was reduced by 26.9%, and brightness was increased by 3%. There also was improved mechanical quality of bagasse pulp: increases of 14.3% (tensile index), 8.7% (tear index record), 4.6% (burst index), and 15.4% (double fold number) were observed compared with conventional kraft pulping. This process also saved money related to the expense of depleted vitality, lime consumed during causticizing process, and upkeep of the causticizing plant.

Borax-agar gel has been used recently in the deacidification and other conservation processes for paper manuscripts. However, the residues of borax-agar can be damaging to the cellulose fibers. Conservators are trying to solve this problem, especially with the great success achieved by the borax / agar based gel in the acidity neutralization and improve the mechanical properties of the paper manuscripts. The current study considers whether the use of paper barriers such as Japanese gampi, linen, and rayon can reduce harmful borax-agar residues. Historical paper specimens were treated with 3% and 6% of agar poultice with different barriers such as rayon, pure linen, and Japanese gampi paper. After drying, the treated paper samples were exposed to hot-moist ageing at 80 °C and 65% relative humidity for 72 h. The role of different barriers used in the reduction of residues from agar poultice and the effect of these residues on cellulose fibers were studied via some analytical techniques, such as digital optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, pH, color change, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were used. The results showed that 3% of the agar poultice-borax with a linen barrier gave the best results with no residue left after treatment.

A new perspective on the effect of unconditioned indoor (especially storage areas) and outdoor environments on wood acidity is provided in this work. A comparison between the quantity and types of the organic acids formed in the unconditioned indoor environment and different outdoor environments was made. Moreover, the acidity of some wood samples due to different environmental conditions was determined using a pH meter and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to detect the changes in wood components at the molecular level due to environmental conditions. The results suggest that the unconditioned indoor environment was more aggressive than the outdoor environment with respect to wood deterioration. The polluted atmosphere increased the wood acidity and motivated polysaccharide breakdown.

Unprecedented anthropogenic activities have led to contamination of soil and water with toxic metals that present a great threat to crop yields. This situation has compelled researchers to understand metal toxicity responses in order to develop strategies to curtail toxic metal-mediated losses in crop yields. Past decade has witnessed tremendous developments with regard to the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulating abiotic stresses including toxic metal in crop plants. However, mechanisms related with NO-mediated mitigation of metal toxicity are still less known, and thus investigation in this domain remains underway. Therefore, in this study potential of NO along with its mechanisms of action in mitigating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] toxicity in tomato roots were investigated. Root length and dry weight were declined by Cr(VI) which coincided with increased accumulation of Cr. Major amount of Cr was in the cell wall fraction followed by soluble (including vacuoles) and cell organelles fraction and thus, leading to the cell death in roots. Further, Cr(VI) also declined endogenous NO by inhibiting nitric oxide synthase like activity, and down-regulated ascorbate-glutathione cycle and glutathione biosynthesis, but stimulated oxidative stress markers. In contrast, exogenous addition of NO (as a sodium nitroprusside) reduced toxic effects of Cr(VI) in tomato roots by decreasing Cr accumulation as well as triggering sequestration of Cr into vacuoles and thus collectively protect root from cell death. Moreover, NO also up-regulated ascorbate-glutathione cycle and glutathione biosynthesis, and stimulated phytochelatins, but greatly declined oxidative stress markers. Interestingly, addition of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (c-PTIO) further worsened Cr(VI) toxicity, and Cr(VI) toxicity alleviatory effect of NO was partly reversed by the addition of c-PTIO, suggesting that NO has a crucial role in rendering Cr(VI) toxicity tolerance in tomato roots. Collectively, results suggest that NO mitigates Cr(VI) toxicity in tomato roots by reducing Cr and oxidative stress markers accumulation, triggering sequestration of Cr into vacuoles, and up-regulating ascorbate-glutathione cycle and glutathione biosynthesis, and phytochelatins.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is the second most abundant sugar crop after sugarcane. Two field experiments were conducted at the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Saba Basha, Alexandria, Egypt, to study the effects of foliar application treatments and boron (B) fertilizer applications on monogerm sugar beet plants (cultivar classic) during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons. The treatments were replicated three times in a split-plot design. Four foliar applications [fulvic acid (FvA), NPK nanoparticles (NPK NPs), FvA + NPK NPs, and a control (water)] were randomly allocated to the main plots. Different numbers of foliar spray applications of B [one application at 120 days after sowing or two applications at 120 and 150 days after sowing, as well as a control (water)] were assigned within the subplots. FvA + NPK NPs significantly increased the root length, root diameter, root weight, and root/shoot ratio of the sugar beet plants; the greatest values were obtained by spraying FvA + NPK NPs during both seasons. B significantly increased the root yield, shoot yield, and biological yield, and two applications of B resulted in the greatest values of root yield, shoot yield, biological yield, and quality of sugar beet. The interaction between FvA or NPK NPs and B significantly affected the yield and quality parameters of the sugar beet plants. However, the greatest mean values of these traits resulted from foliar applications of FvA + NPK NPs in conjunction with applications of B under the conditions at Alexandria, Egypt.

The beneficial roles of melatonin (Mel) and gibberellic acid (GA3) in the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments, osmoregulation, and methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification and antioxidant system were studied in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Five Star) seedlings under NaCl stress. The exogenous application of Mel (100 µM) and GA3 (1.4 µM) together more efficiently affected growth performance of seedlings under salt stress. The decreased chlorophyll (Chl) degradation and Chl-degrading enzyme (chlorophyllase) activity in seedlings receiving Mel plus GA3 resulted in increased Chl content by upregulating Chl synthesizing enzyme (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase) under salinity. Exogenous Mel plus GA3 suppressed the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS; superoxide and hydrogen peroxide) and activity of glycolate oxidase. Application of Mel with GA3 reduced MG content by enhancing the activity of enzymes (glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II) involved in the MG detoxification system. Both Mel and GA3 together protected seedlings from ROS induced damage by regulating Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase activity, and content of proline (Pro) and glycine betaine (GB). Seedlings receiving Mel + GA3 exhibited a substantial upregulated activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and lipoxygenase, and redox homeostasis that reduced oxidative damage induced by salinity. These outcomes advocate that Mel and GA3 played beneficial roles in Chl, Pro and GB biosynthesis, and improved redox homeostasis, and MG detoxification and antioxidant system under salt stress.

Despite numerous reports on the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulating plants growth and mitigating different environmental stresses, its participation in sulfur (S) -metabolism remains largely unknown. Therefore, we studied the role of NO in S acquisition and S-assimilation in tomato seedlings under low S-stress conditions by supplying NO to the leaves of S-sufficient and S-deficient seedlings. S-starved plants exhibited a substantial decreased in plant growth attributes, photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll (Chl) and other photosynthetic parameters, and activity of enzymes involved in Chl biosynthesis (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase), and photosynthetic processes (carbonic anhydrase and RuBisco). Also, S-deficiency enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) (superoxide and hydrogen peroxide) and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde) levels in tomato seedlings. Contrarily, foliar supplementation of NO to S-deficient seedlings resulted in considerably reduced ROS formation in leaves and roots, which alleviated low S-stress-induced lipid peroxidation. However, exogenous NO enhanced proline accumulation by increasing proline metabolizing enzyme (Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase) activity and also increased NO, hydrogen sulfide (a gasotransmitter small signaling molecule) and S uptake, and content of S-containing compounds (cysteine and reduced glutathione). Under S-limited conditions, NO improved S utilization efficiency of plants by upregulating the activity of S-assimilating enzymes (ATP sulfurylase, adenosine 5-phosphosulfate reductase, sulfide reductase and O-acetylserine (thiol) lyase). Under S-deprived conditions, improved S-assimilation of seedlings receiving NO resulted in improved redox homeostasis and ascorbate content through increased NO and S uptake. Application of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxy l-3-oxide (an NO scavenger) invalidated the effect of NO and again caused low S-stress-induced oxidative damage, confirming the beneficial role of NO in seedlings under S-deprived conditions. Thus, exogenous NO enhanced the tolerance of tomato seedlings to limit S-triggered oxidative stress and improved photosynthetic performance and S assimilation.

Vegetables cultivated near roads absorb toxic metals from polluted soil, which enter the human body through the food chain and cause serious health problems to humans. The present study investigated the concentration of lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) in soils and vegetables grown along the roadside of District Swat, Pakistan, and the health risks associated with the consumption of the tested vegetables. In results, Pb concentration was higher in plants located at the distance between 0-10 m away from the roadside than the WHO permissible limit. In such plants, Pb concentration was higher than Ni. The contamination of agricultural soil with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu) persists and intensifies in food crops posing a risk to human health. When used as effective soil manures, biomass conversion to organic amendments can help to deal with this deteriorating problem and, at the same time, remediate PTEs within contaminated soil. The present study compared the potential of orange peel-derived biochar (OPDBC) and poultry manure (PM) toward reducing the bioavailability of PTEs when they are applied to degraded agricultural soil (DAS). It further evaluated PTEs bioaccumulation in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) and the associated health risks. The DAS was amended with OPDBC and PM at 1%, 3%, and 5% application rates, and okra was grown in these modified soils in pots (2.5 kg soils each). Compared to control (contaminated soil), OPDBC treatments significantly reduced Cd availability, reduced Cd uptake to plants (21-37%), followed by Ni (18-27%), and increased okra plant biomass (15-39%) and fruits weight (40-93%). PM effectiveness was lower than OPDBC and reduced Cd uptake (8-33%) and increased vegetative biomass and fruit yield (3-22% and 13-33%, respectively). OPDBC 5% demonstrated the best results in terms of immobilization and reduction of Cd uptake by plants (37%) and fruits (41%). Temperature is a key factor influencing plant growth and productivity, but its sudden rise can cause severe consequences on crop performances. Early sowing and application of growth promoting agents as a foliar spray can be a sustainable approach to cope with high temperature stress at grain filling stage of cereal crops. Therefore, a test was designed to explore the potential of different growth helping agents including sorghum water extract (SWE, 10 ml L-1), moringa leaf extract (MLE, 3%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 2 μM), salicylic acid (SA, 50 mg L-1) and ascorbic acid (ASA, 50 mg L-1) as foliar agents at different sowing dates (early and optimum) to cope with temperature stress in maize. The results stated that foliar application of growth promoting substances successfully persuaded high temperature tolerance at reproductive phase of maize in early and optimum sowings when compared to control. However, SWE + ASA, MLE + H2O2 and SWE + ASA + SA + H2O2 were the best combinations for improving growth, development, and physiological variables under both sowing dates even under suboptimal temperature. All foliar applications significantly increased maize grain and biological yields while maximum was observed in SWE + ASA followed by SWE + ASA + SA + H2O2 or MLE + H2O2 that were statistically at par with ASA + SA + H2O2 but plants without spray or distilled water application did not improve grain and biological yields. Overall, the foliar applications of growth promoting substances enable the plant to enhance its growth, development, morphology, yield and biochemical variables.

The contamination of agricultural soil with heavy metals is a complex phenomenon that causes negative consequences for various organisms. Poplars may have considerable phytoremediation potential, and this plant species can tolerate Cd, Cu, and Pb up to 15.6, 63.6, and 173.3 mg kg-1 soil, respectively, with 100% survival. The analyzed data revealed significant reduction in vegetative growth traits and leaf N, P, K, and carbohydrate (%) and leaf green color degree. However, a simultaneously significant increase in enzymatic activities and electrolyte leakage were recorded in comparison to control plants. A bioconcentration factor of plant organs was ˂ 1, and the translocation factors (TF) of Cd and Cu were ˂ 1 ( ˂100%) under various concentrations of each heavy metal, while TF of Pb was ˃ 1(>100%), except for the first level. More Cd, Cu, and Pb contents were localized in roots compared to leaves or stems. Thus, the risk of contamination through leaf can be minimized. Populus nigra has defense mechanisms against Cd, Cu, and Pb up to 7.8, 29.8, and 91.1 mg/kg soil, respectively because the tolerance index (TI) of either biomass or root was >0.8. Finally, it is a good candidate for research of phytoremediation and phytoextraction.

Jasmonic acid (JA) is an important phytohormone associated in defense responses against stress. Crop plants experience heavy metal toxicity and needs to be explored to enhance the crop production. Lead (Pb) is one of the dangerous heavy metal that pollutes soil and water bodies and is released from various sources like discharge from batteries, automobile exhaust, and paints. The present study was designed to evaluate the role of JA (100 nM) on photosynthetic pigments, secondary metabolites, organic acids, and metal ligation compounds in tomato seedlings under different concentrations of Pb (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mM). It was observed that Pb treatment declined pigment content, relative water content, and heavy metal tolerance index. Expression of chlorophyllase was also enhanced in Pb-treated seedlings. Seeds primed with JA lowered the expression of chlorophyllase under Pb stress. JA application enhanced the contents of secondary metabolites (total phenols, polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanin) which were confirmed with enhanced expression of chalcone synthase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase in Pb-exposed seedlings. Treatment of JA further elevated the levels of organic acids and metal chelating compounds under Pb toxicity. JA up-regulated the expression of succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate hydratase in Pb-exposed seedlings. Results revealed that seeds primed with JA reduced Pb toxicity by elevating, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, secondary metabolites, osmolytes, metal ligation compounds, organic acids, and polyamine accumulation in tomato seedlings.

In present studies we have evaluated mulching impact of Jatropha curcas leaves on soil health and yield of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties Wadan-2017 (rainfed) and Pirsabak-2013 (irrigated) under imposed water stress. Mulch of Jatropha leaves was spread on the soil surface at the rate of 0, 1, 3 and 5 Mg ha−1 after seed germination of wheat. Water stress was imposed by skipping irrigations for one month at anthesis stage of wheat maintaining 40% soil field capacity. We found a significant decline in soil microbial biomass carbon (30.27%), total nitrogen (22.28%) and organic matter content (21.73%) due to imposed water stress in non-mulch plots. However, mulch application at 5 Mg ha−1 significantly improved soil organic matter (38.18%), total nitrogen (37.75%), phenolics content (16.95 mg gallic acid equivalents/g) and soil microbial biomass carbon (26.66%) as compared to non-mulch control. Soil health indicators like soil carbonates, bicarbonates, electrical conductivity, chloride ions and total dissolved salts were decreased by 5 Mg ha−1 mulch application. We noted a decline in yield indicators like spike weight (14.74%), grain spike−1 (7.02%), grain length (3.79%), grain width (3.16%), 1000 grains weight (6.10%), Awn length (9.21%), straw weight (23.53%) and total grain yield (5.98%) of wheat due to imposed water stress. Reduction in yield traits of wheat due to water stress was higher in Pirsabak-2013 than Wadan-2017. Jatropha leaves mulch application at 5 Mg ha−1 significantly minimized the loss in yield traits of wheat crop caused by water stress. Jatropha curcas leaves mulch application at 5 Mg ha−1 is recommended for the successful establishment of wheat crop under water deficit conditions.

Seed priming technique has a marvelous potential in enhancing seed germination and crop establishment under limited soil moisture conditions, which ultimately increases yield. Therefore, we investigated the effects of seed priming on physiology, growth, yield and antioxidant defense system of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) under rain-fed condition. The experiments were conducted under laboratory as well as field conditions comprising three treatments i.e., non-primed seeds (control, T0), priming with tap water (hydropriming) (T1) and priming with 2% KNO3 2% for 6 hours at 25°C followed by shade drying (T2). The results showed that chlorophyll content (10.37–14.15%) and relative water content (RWC) (12.70–13.01%) increased whereas proline (-19.44 to -25%) and soluble sugar (-15.51 to -29.13%) contents decreased on account of seed priming in pearl millet under field conditions. The seed priming significantly improved the plant height, final plant stand and grain weight which resulted in increased yield. Enhanced activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) (5.89 to 8.10 unit/g/seed/min), catalase (CAT) (22.54 to 39.67 µmol/min/g/seed) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) (8.92 to 22.10 µmol/cm/min/g) and concomitant decrease in H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content suggests their role in imparting oxidative tolerance at initial stages of growth in primed seed. The lab studies suggest that the improved yield might be attributes to increased seed germination and seedling vigor. It is recommended that the hydropriming (tap water) or KNO3 (2%) priming of seeds for 6 hours under ambient conditions is effective to enhance growth and yield of pearl millet under rainfed conditions.

To feed the increased world population, sustainability in the production of crops is the need of the hour, and exploration of an effective symbiotic association of rhizobia with legumes may serve the purpose. A laboratory-scale experiment was conducted to evaluate the symbiotic effectiveness of twenty wild rhizobial isolates (MR1–MR20) on the growth, physiology, biochemical traits, and nodulation of mung bean to predict better crop production with higher yields. Rhizobial strain MR4 resulted in a 52% increase in shoot length and 49% increase in shoot fresh mass, while MR5 showed a 30% increase in root length, with 67% and 65% improvement in root fresh mass by MR4 and MR5, respectively, compared to uninoculated control. Total dry matter of mung bean was enhanced by 73% and 68% with strains MR4 and MR5 followed by MR1 and MR3 with 60% increase in comparison to control. Rhizobial strain MR5 produced a maximum (25 nodules) number of nodules followed by MR4, MR3, and MR1 which produced 24, 23, and 21 nodules per plant. Results related to physiological parameters showed the best performance of MR4 and MR5 compared to control among all treatments. MR4 strain helped the plants to produce the lowest values of total soluble protein (TSP) (38% less), flavonoids contents (44% less), and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (52% less) among all treatments compared to uninoculated control plants. Total phenolics contents of mung bean plants also showed significantly variable results, with the highest value of 54.79 mg kg−1 in MR4 inoculated plants, followed by MR5 and MR1 inoculated plants, while the minimum concentration of total phenolics was recorded in uninoculated control plants of mung bean. Based on the results of growth promotion, nodulation ability, and physiological and biochemical characteristics recorded in an experimental trial conducted under gnotobiotic conditions, four rhizobial isolates (MR1, MR3, MR4, and MR5) were selected using cluster and principal component analysis. Selected strains were also tested for a variety of plant-growth-promoting molecules to develop a correlation with the results of plant-based parameters, and it was concluded that these wild rhizobial strains were effective in improving sustainable production of mung bean.

Wheat is an important cereal crop, which is adversely affected by water deficit stress. The effect of induced stress can be reduced by the application of salicylic acid (SA). With the objective to combat drought stress in wheat, an experiment was conducted in greenhouse under hydroponic conditions. The treatments consisted of (a) no drought (DD0 = 0 MPa), mild drought (DD1 = -0.40 MPa) and severe drought (DD2 = -0.60 MPa) by applying PEG-8000, (b) two contrasting wheat varieties Barani-17 (drought tolerant) and Anaj-17 (drought-sensitive), and (c) foliar treatments of salicylic acid (0, 50 mM, 75 mM, and 100 mM). Evaluation of wheat plants regarding biochemical, physiological, and morphological attributes were rendered after harvesting of plants. Statistically, maximum shoot and root fresh and dry weights (18.77, 11.15 and 1.99, 1.81 g, respectively) were recorded in cultivar Barani-17 under no drought condition with the application of SA (100 mM). While, minimum shoot and root fresh and dry weights (6.65, 3.14 and 0.73, 0.61 g, respectively) were recorded in cultivar Anaj-2017 under mild drought stress without SA application. The maximum shoot length (68.0 cm) was observed in cultivar Barani-2017 under no drought condition with the application of SA (100 mM). While, maximum root length (59.67 cm) was recorded in cultivar Anaj-17 under moderate drought stress without application of SA. Further, minimum shoot length (28.67 cm) was recorded in Anaj-17 under moderate drought stress without SA application. Minimum root length (38.67 cm) was recorded in cultivar Barani-17 under no drought condition without SA application. Furthermore, maximum physio-biochemical traits, including membrane stability index (MSI), chlorophyl content, photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, antioxidant enzymatic activities and relative water content (RWC) were found highest in cultivar Barani-17 under no drought stress and SA application at 100 mM. However, minimum values of these traits were recorded in cultivar Anaj-17 under severe drought stress without SA application. Our results also demonstrated that under severe drought, application of SA at 100 mM significantly increased leaf nitrogen (N), phosphrus (P) and potassium (K) contents and cultivar Barani-17 demonstrated significantly higher values than Anaj-17. The obtained results also indicated that the cultivation of wheat under drought stress conditions noticeably declines the morphological, physiological, and biochemical attributes of the plants. However, the exogenous application of SA had a positive impact on wheat crop for enhancing its productivity.

Vegetables cultivated near roads absorb toxic metals from polluted soil, which enter into the human body through the food chain and cause serious health problems to humans. The present study investigated the contamination level of lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) in soils and vegetables grown along the roadside of District Swat, Pakistan, and the health risks associated with the consumption of the tested vegetables have been investigated. The plant samples were collected from the cultivated field within a 120-meter range from the roadside. Spinacia oleracea, Allium cepa, Rumex dentatus, and Trachyspermum ammi were selected based on their importance as vegetables. In results, Pb concentration was higher in plants located at the distance between 0-10 m away from the roadside than the WHO permissible limit. In such plants, Pb concentration was higher than Ni. Rumex dentatus contained the highest concentration of Pb among the tested vegetables while Ni concentration was highest in Trachyspermum ammi as compared to other plants. Concentration and accumulation of both the metals decreased in soil and plants with increasing distance from the road. Similarly, target hazard quotient values noted for Pb and Ni were greater than unity, which shows that there is a potential risk associated with the consumption of tested vegetables near the road. Moreover, the values of target cancer risk were greater than 0.0001, which shows that there is a risk of cancer with the consumption of tested vegetables. In conclusion, the consumption of the tested vegetables was very dangerous as it may lead to higher risks of cancer.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential plant nutrient, therefore, N-deficient soils affect plant growth and development. The excessive and unwise application of N fertilizers result in nutrient losses and lower nutrient use efficiency that leads to the low crop productivity. Ammonia volatilization causes a major loss after N fertilization that causes environmental pollution. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of coating and uncoating N fertilizer in enhancing yield and nutrient-use efficiency with reduced ammonia emissions. The recommended rate of nitrogen and phosphorus, urea and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizers were coated manually with 1% polymer solution. DAP (coated/uncoated) and potassium were applied at the time of sowing as subsurface application. While urea (coated/uncoated) was applied as surface and subsurface application. Results showed that nutrient use efficiencies of wheat were found to be maximum with the subsurface application of coated N fertilizer which increased nutrient-use efficiency by 44.57 (N), 44.56 (P) and 44.53% (K) higher than the surface application of uncoated N fertilizer. Ammonia emissions were found the lowest with subsurface-applied coated N fertilizer. Thus, coated fertilizer applied via subsurface was found the best technique to overcome the ammonia volatilization with an improvement in the yield and nutrient-use efficiency of wheat.

The appraisal of foliar treatment of iron (Fe) and salicylic acid (SA) on plant under artificial magnetism is very crucial in understanding its impact on growth and development of plants. The present study was designed to document the potential role of Fe and SA on pea (Pisum sativumL.) Matore variety exposed to different magnetism treatments (geomagnetism and artificial magnetism). Thus a pot experiment was conducted using Completely Randomized Design under factorial with three replicates. Various artificial magnetic treatment were applied in pots prior to sowing. Further, 15 days germinated pea seedlings were foliarly supplemented with 250 ppm Fe and 250μM SA, moreover after 20 days of foliar fertilization plants were harvested to analyze and record various morpho-physiological attributes. Data elucidate significant variations in pea plants among different treatments. Artificial magnetism treatments in combination with foliar application of Fe and SA significantly improved various growth attributes (root and shoot length, fresh and dry weights of root and shoot, leaf area), photosynthetic pigments (Chla,band carotenoids) and the contents of soluble sugars. However, oxidative stress (H2O2and MDA) enhanced under different magnetism treatment but foliar application of Fe and SA hampered the production of reactive oxygen species thereby limiting the concentration of H2O2and MDA in plant tissues. Furthermore the accumulation of nutrients (iron, potassium and nitrate) profoundly increased under artificial magnetism treatment specifically under Fe and SA foliar treatment excluding nitrate where Fe foliar treatment tend to limit nitrate in plant. Consequently, the present research interestingly highlights progressive role of Fe and SA foliar treatment on pea plants under artificial magnetism. Thus, foliar supplementation may be suggested for better growth and development of plants combined with magnetic treatments.

Recent investigations of a Greco-Roman site at Sais have provided well-preserved archaeobotanical remains within a pile of metal fragments. The remains are compared with comparable modern taxa. The morphology and anatomy are studied using Light microscope (LM), Environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and X-ray computed tomography (CT). To investigate the preservation mode, Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis and elemental mapping are conducted. Results revealed that the archaeobotanical remains are exhibiting close affinity with modern juniper cones. Although, the studied archaeobotanical remains are buried for more than 2 millenniums, they underwent early stages of silicification and copper mineralization. These results are discussed in relation to other excavated objects in the find and to our knowledge and understanding of daily life in the Greco-Roman period.

Background: Natural plant extracts and microbial antagonists have the potential for use in increasing the fungal resistance and productivity of horticulture plants. Methods: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of both natural plant extracts and microbial antagonists as a biotical control of some fungal pathogens, i.e., Fusarium ssp., Exserohilum ssp. and Nigrospora ssp., along with improving the growth and productivity performance of zucchini under greenhouse conditions. Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaf extract (LE), Citrus sinensis LE, Ficus benghalensis fruit extract (FE), and two microbial antagonists Pseudomonas fluorescens (accession no. MW647093) and Trichoderma viride (accession no. MW647090) were tested under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Through morphological characteristics and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, Fusarium solani (accession no. MW947256), F. oxysporum (accession no. MW947254), Exserohilum rostratum (accession no. MW947255), and Nigrospora&nbsp, lacticolonia (accession no. MW947253) were identified. HPLC analysis was used for the identification of phenolic compounds (PCs) and flavonoid compounds (FCs) in the extracts. Results: The highest inhibition percentage of fungal growth (IPFG) against F. oxysporum was obtained with P. fluorescens, T. viride, and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L), F. solani with P. fluorescens, T. viride, and C. sinensis LE (4000 mg/L), Exserohilum rostratum with P. fluorescens, Ficus benghalensis FE (4000 mg/L) and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L), and N. lacticolonia with P. fluorescens. Using HPLC analysis, the abundant PCs in E. camaldulensis LE were pyrogallol, and caffeic acid, those in C. sinensis LE were syringic acid and ferulic acid, and those in F. benghalensis FE were gallic acid and syringic acid. In addition, the abundant FCs in E. camaldulensis LE were kaempferol, and naringin, those in C. sinensis LE were hesperidin and quercetin, and those in F. benghalensis FE were kaempferol and quercetin. Under greenhouse experiments, T. viride and E. camaldulensis LE (4000 mg/L) followed by P. fluorescens + T. viride treatments gave the best results of zucchini plants in terms of leaf area, fruits number per plant, yield per plant, and total yield (marketable and non-marketable). Conclusions: Plant extracts and bioagents can be used to control some zucchini fungal pathogens and increase the productivity performance of zucchini plants.

Broad-leaved subtropical forests are the most productive, diversified, and complex ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, they are currently under severe threat from anthropogenic activities, such as. deforestation, housing settlements, and agricultural expansion. In response to these severe effects, the present study was conducted to explore the current conservation status and population structure of a wide range of bird species inhabiting different subtropical broad-leaved urban forests of Pakistan. In total, 2879 individuals comprising 53 species and 28 families were detected between December 2017 and November 2018 as revealed through the distance sampling line transect method. The habitat selection among bird species varied according to vegetation structure and composition, food resources, adjoining habitats, and human settlements. According to IUCN Red List data, one species was deemed vulnerable out of 53 bird species, while the remaining 52 species were ranked as ofleast concern. The findings of the density analysis revealed that bird density varied between six subtropical broad-leaved forests. Palamar (3.954 ± 0.221 birds/ha) and Kityari (3.138 ± 0.162 birds/ha) were densely populated, whereas Kamal Khan (1.102 ± 0.178 birds/ha) was of the least concern. Likewise, the diversity analysis showed that Kamal Khan was a more diverse habitat (Shannon–Wiener Index; H’ = 3.581 ± 0.021). Shahabad was richer (Margalef Richness Index; R1 = 8.007 ± 0.053) and Dob Ghar was evenly distributed (Pielou J Evenness Index; E = 0.940 ± 0.005) compared to other urban habitats studied. Eight foraging guilds were identified among the bird species. Insectivores were the most abundant bird species utilizing the urban dwelling habitats. carnivores/piscivores/insectivores utilized Dob Ghar forest, while more frugivores utilized Kamal Khan and Dob Ghar. Based on the data, it was concluded that subtropical broad-leaved urban forests are dynamic, complex, and of vital significance for a diverse range of bird species.

Current research focused on the potential role of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and potassium (K+) in mitigation of arsenic (As) toxicity in Vicia faba L. seedlings. Faba bean seedlings were grown for 30days in potted soil. As stress curtailed root and shoot length, chlorophyll (Chl) content and net photosynthetic rate in V. faba seedlings. However, ZnONPs and K+ curtailed As stress in faba bean seedling through enhanced activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) enzyme. Furthermore, ZnONPs and K+ significantly enhanced cysteine (Cys) content and serine acetyletransferase (SAT) activity in faba bean seedling exposed to As-toxificated soil. Application of ZnONPs and K+ curtailed superoxide ionic content and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in V. faba seedlings exposed to As-polluted soil. Nitric oxide (NO) content also increased in faba bean seedlings treated with ZnONPs and K+ in normal and As-polluted soil. As stress alleviation was credited to reduce As uptake in faba bean seedlings treated with synergistic application of ZnONPs and K+. It is proposed that K+ interaction with nanoparticles can be exploited at molecular level to understand the mechanisms involved in abiotic stress tolerance.

This study evaluated the effect of phosphorus and potassium (PK) fertilizer levels and foliar seaweed extract on early and total yield productivity and the growth of globe artichoke plants. Field experiments were conducted over two seasons on loamy–clay soil at the vegetable research farm, of the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, Egypt. Fertilizer levels of 0, 25, 50 and 75 mL L−1, and seaweed extract concentrations of 0, 5 and 10 mg L−1, individually and in combination, were used. Globe artichoke plants treated with PK liquid fertilizer, with and without seaweed extract, showed critical increases in growth (plant height and number of leaves per plant as well as foliage dry weight), yield, and some chemical constituents compared to untreated plants. The PK3 fertilizer level and 10 mL L−1 seaweed extract as a foliar spray showed greater effects than other combinations.

Leaf rust is a devastating disease in wheat crop. The disease forecasting models can facilitate the economic and effective use of fungicides and assist in limiting crop yield losses. In this study, six wheat cultivars were screened against leaf rust at two locations, during three consecutive growing seasons. Subsequently, the stepwise regression analysis was employed to analyze the correlation of six epidemiological variables (minimum temperature, maximum temperature, minimum relative humidity, maximum relative humidity, rainfall and wind speed) with disease severity and yield loss (%). Disease predictive models were developed for each cultivar for final leaf rust severity and yield loss prediction. Principally, all epidemiological variables indicated a positive association with leaf rust severity and yield loss (%) except minimum relative humidity. The effectiveness of disease predictive models was estimated using coefficient of determination (R2) values for all models. Then, these predictive models were validated to forecast disease severity and yield loss at another location in Faisalabad. The R2 values of all disease predictive models for each of the tested cultivars were high, evincing that our regression models could be effectively employed to predict leaf rust disease severity and anticipated yield loss. The validation results explained 99% variability, suggesting a highly accurate prediction of the two variables (leaf rust severity and yield loss). The models developed in this research can be used by wheat farmers to forecast disease epidemics and to make disease management decisions accordingly.
