Abstract

The management of autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) continues to challenge the otologist. Steroids and cyclophosphamide, the two traditional medications for this malady, are often associated with serious adverse reactions. In an effort to use a less toxic medication, the authors treated five autoimmune SNHL patients with low-dose oral methotrexate. Methotrexate has been found to be very effective in rheumatoid arthritis patients with acceptable adverse reactions. Preliminary results from this study indicate that methotrexate has the potential of being effective for autoimmune SNHL and associated otologic symptoms. Tolerance has been very good and side effects have been minimal.

Abstract

The ability of a 406-MHz satellite to detect and locate aeronautical, maritime, and terrestrial distress incidents is investigated. The geostationary satellite, uplink and downlink budgets, and processors utilized in the experiment are described. The experiment involves: (1) benchmark testing, (2) verification of spacecraft repeater performance, (3) system evaluation, and (4) environmental testing. The Canadian processor data reveal that the processor threshold is 28 dB Hz, the degradation at 27 dB Hz is significant, the median distress message throughput time is 6 minutes, and the microcomputer can handle 10 distress incidents per hour.

Specifications for the COSPAS/SARSAT beacons are presented and related design considerations are discussed. Critical design aspects having significant impact on cost and performance are highlighted. Among these is the oscillator, whose frequency drift specifications require stabilization by ovens or digital control. Design options are presented and their impact on cost and performance assessed. Beacon designs developed to meet COSPAS/SARSAT specifications are shown.

Abstract

The NOAA 8 SARSAT system performance was tested at 121.5/243 MHz to measure detection probability, detection threshold, location accuracy, ambiguity resolution, and multiple access capacity. Detection probability exceeds 0.95 for a single satellite pass. Detection threshold margin varies from 2 dB (243 MHz, incoherent) to 20 dB (121.5, coherent). Position location error is 20 km 68% of the time. Ambiguity is resolved 75% of the time. The system can locate 10 separate test signals.
