The southern portions of the boreal region across Canada are dominated by boreal mixedwoods forests, which are character ized by varying canopy dominance of boreal broadleaf and conifer trees. This forest region encompasses a large east-to-west gradient of climate and disturbance regimes. Although the same major boreal tree species occur in all parts of the boreal mixedwood region, they vary greatly in relative abundance. This is a reflection of the interactions among the different abiotic and biotic components. As a result, there is considerable variation in post-disturbance stand development, producing a wide variety of mixedwood forest conditions existing as a mosaic in time and space. Post-disturbance dominance by broadleaf species followed by a transition to conifers is the “classic” pathway in all regions. However, there is wide variation in the transition rate and the species sequence across the gradient depending on factors such as moisture, abundance of each species, fire cycle, climate and secondary disturbances (mainly insect outbreaks). Future changes in climate and disturbance regime could influ ence the nature of stand dynamics of boreal mixedwoods and the prominence of different pathways among regions. Focussing on the commonality of processes in mixedwood stand development across the boreal is a promising way to address the management of this important forest ecosystem.

Live vegetation carbon (C) pool dynamics are central to understanding C sequestration of forest ecosystems. Despite its importance, how aboveground live C pools change with stand development in boreal mixedwoods is poorly understood. This study investigates the potential of mixed forest stands as better aboveground carbon sinks than pure stands. According to the facilitation and niche complementarity hypotheses, we predict higher carbon sequestration in mature boreal mixedwoods. Aboveground carbon contents of black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns, Poggenb.) and trembling aspen ( Populus tremuloides Michx.) mixtures were investigated in the eastern boreal forest, whereas jack pine ( Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and trembling aspen were used in the central boreal forest. No carbon gain was found in species mixtures; nearly pure trembling aspen stands contained the greatest amount of aboveground carbon, black spruce stands had the least, and mixtures were intermediate with amounts that could generally be predicted by linear interpolation with stem proportions. These results suggest that for aspen, the potentially detrimental effect of spruce on soils observed in other studies may be offset by greater light availability in mixtures. On the other hand, for black spruce, the potentially beneficial effects of aspen on soils could be offset by greater competition by aspen for nutrients and light. The mixture of jack pine and trembling aspen did not benefit any of these species while inducing a loss in trembling aspen carbon at the stand level.

Stand structure diversity is hypothesized (i) to increase with stand development and (ii) to be greater in mixedwood stands than in conifer and broadleaf stands. We examined the effects of time since stand-replacing fire (TSF) and overstory type on stand volume, stand density, and tree-size variability, which is measured using Shannon’s diversity index (H′) and coefficient of variation, in fire-origin boreal forest stands. We sampled 36 stands representing conifer, mixedwood, and broadleaf overstory types, ranging in ages from 72 to 201 years TSF on upland mesic sites in northwestern Ontario, Canada. Stand volume decreased in older mixedwood and broadleaf stands, but followed a U-shaped pattern in conifer stands with TSF. Diameter-at-breast-height-based H′ followed an inverse U-shaped pattern with TSF for all overstory types. Height-based H′ decreased with TSF in conifer and mixedwood stands but peaked at the intermediate age class in broadleaf stands. Diameter-at-breast-height- and height-based coefficient of variation indices followed an inverse U-shaped distribution with TSF. Our results partially supported the two hypotheses, as (i) the 124- to 139-year-old stands were most diverse and (ii) mixedwood stands were more than or as equally diverse as conifer and broadleaf stands, depending on stand development stage and the diversity indices used.

Red spruce ( Picea rubens Sarg.) forests are an ecologically and economically important forest type in eastern Canada. We quantified the carbon (C) stocks of natural red spruce dominated stands in central Nova Scotia. Twenty-four stands over a 140 year chronosequence were sampled. Within each stand, major C pools including above- and below-ground tree biomass, shrub and herb vegetation, dead organic matter, and upper (0–10 cm) mineral soil were measured. A nonlinear four-parameter logistic function was fitted to the total site C stock data to describe the change in total ecosystem C storage over time. Total site C storage increased throughout stand development in a general sigmoidal pattern, increasing from 94.4 Mg C·ha–1 in the youngest age-class to a maximum of 247.0 Mg C·ha–1 in the 81- to 100-year-old age-class, then decreasing in the oldest age-classes. Carbon pools of live vegetation, standing dead trees, and downed woody debris displayed recognizable changes in C storage throughout stand development, conforming to some of the fundamental ideas on forest stand dynamics. Overall, above- and below-ground tree biomass had the greatest influence on total site C storage dynamics. These results are likely to be integrated into further forest management plans and generalized in other contexts to evaluate carbon stocks at the regional scale.
