Nanochitin and nanochitosan (with random-copolymer-based multiscale architectures of glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine units) have recently attracted immense attention for the development of green, sustainable, and advanced functional materials. Nanochitin and nanochitosan are multiscale materials from small oligomers, rod-shaped nanocrystals, longer nanofibers, to hierarchical assemblies of nanofibers. Various physical properties of chitin and chitosan depend on their molecular- and nanostructures; translational research has utilized them for a wide range of applications (biomedical, industrial, environmental, and so on). Instead of reviewing the entire extensive literature on chitin and chitosan, here, recent developments in multiscale-dependent material properties and their applications are highlighted; immune, medical, reinforcing, adhesive, green electrochemical materials, biological scaffolds, and sustainable food packaging are discussed considering the size, shape, and assembly of chitin nanostructures. In summary, new perspectives for the development of sustainable advanced functional materials based on nanochitin and nanochitosan by understanding and engineering their multiscale properties are described., (© 2022 The Authors. Fluorescent chitin nanofibers (FChN), as a new type of promising fluorescent nanomaterials, exhibit the characteristics of low toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, sustainability, and high crystallinity and mechanical modulus. However, there is a tradeoff between fluorescence and nanosizing efficiency in processing and conversion of chitin into FChN, because amino groups in chitin are easily converted into fluorescent groups during the first modification process; therefore, FChN are usually prepared with low efficiency via nanosizing first and then modification. Herein, FChN with excellent fluorescence properties were efficiently prepared via a modification-first strategy assisted by a mild and facile click chemistry of partially deacetylated chitins (DEChs). Enough amino groups (22%–30%) were retained in fluorescent DEChs by precise adjustment of reaction activity of amino–yne/hydroxy–yne click chemistry of DEChs, which was the key for the successful preparation of FChN with high efficiency of almost 98%. The first click modification process was mild and had no negative effect on the morphology of FChN, which was similar to that of unmodified chitin nanofibers. In addition, FChN dispersion showed excellent fluorescence and could be used as fluorescent inks for anti-counterfeit printing; FChN films not only showed high fluorescent stability in water, ethanol, DMF, DMSO and 8 wt% NaOH aqueous solution for 30 days, but also exhibited high stress of 200.12 ± 1.70 MPa, excellent UV-blocking properties and controlled biodegradability. This facile and efficient method provides a more sustainable strategy for preparation of functional chitin nanofibers which has high potential for application to anti-counterfeiting, biosensing and smart packaging materials. Photocatalytic hydrogen production has garnered considerable attention as a latent solution to various energy challenges. Because of their distinct optical characteristics, persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) can emit light long after illumination ends, making them highly advantageous for round-the-clock photocatalysis. However, photocatalytic activity is currently restricted owing to the low specific surface area and the high number of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. In this study, PLNP (ZnGa5Si5O18)/sulfur-doped carbon nitride (SCN) was synthesized via a solvothermal method and calcination. Under irradiation with a xenon lamp, the resulting PLNPs/SCN (1 : 1) composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 3963.80 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 15 times and 1.4 times higher than that of PLNPs (307.1 μmol g−1 h−1) and SCN (2800.80 μmol g−1 h−1), respectively. The formation of a stable type II heterojunction is responsible for the high photocatalytic activity. This heterojunction effectively suppressed the electron–hole complexation generated during photoexcitation and enhanced the carrier flexibility. In addition, the PLNPs/SCN (1 : 1) composite had a larger specific surface area than the PLNPs. The synthesis of this novel composite heterojunction under mild conditions not only provides a new strategy for preparing PLNP-based composite catalysts but also holds significant potential for enabling round-the-clock photocatalysis. Nowadays, there has been significant interest in two-dimensional (2D) materials for thermoelectrical (TE) application due to their intrinsic high electrical conductivity and weak phonon transport ability. Since a series of novel 2D 7-atomic materials (such as the MoSi2N4 monolayer) have been proposed (Y. L. Hong et al., Science, 2020, 369, 670), some of them are expected to be potential TE materials. In this study, through a combination of first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory, we systemically investigate the electrical and thermal transport properties of the original 2D ZrSn2N4 monolayer. It is interesting to find that p-type (n-type) doped ZrSn2N4 has a high PF value of 3.13 (2.71) mW m-1 K-2 at 1200 K. Besides, the high phonon anharmonic scattering results in a low thermal conductivity of 3.27 (3.57) W m-1 K-1 for p-type (n-type) ZrSn2N4 at 1200 K. Consequently, the optimal ZT values for p-type (n-type) doped ZrSn2N4 show a moderate level of 1.15 (0.91) at 1200 K. Crustacean shells, waste from the seafood industry, have been identified as a potential sustainable material for the adsorption of lead, a potent heavy metal found in the discharge of industrial processes. The dynamics and kinetics of its performance were evaluated in batch experiments under pH, temperature, time, and initial concentration. A unique and non-intuitive key finding was that among the native components of the crab shell matrix, i.e., chitin, protein, and calcium carbonate, calcium carbonate was instrumental in sequestration. The role of protein was minimal, whereas the efficiency of chitin in lead complexation was linked to the lead atomic radius, which, of the crab shell components, we determined was very prone to interacting with chitin. We provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of island frugivory and seed dispersal and identify knowledge gaps that are important for fundamental research on—and applied conservation of—island ecosystems. We conducted a systematic literature search of frugivory and seed dispersal on islands, omitting large, continental islands. This revealed a total of 448 studies, most (75%) published during the last two decades, especially after 2010. Nearly 65% of them were focused on eight archipelagos. There is a paucity of studies in Pacific archipelagos near Asia and Australia, and in the Indian Ocean. Data on island frugivory and seed dispersal are diverse but highly uneven in geographic and conceptual coverage. Despite their limited biodiversity, islands are essential reservoirs of endemic plants and animals and their interactions. Due to the simplicity of insular ecosystems, we can assess the importance of seed dispersal theory and mechanisms at species and community levels. These include the ecological and biogeographical meaning and prevalence of non-standard mechanisms of seed dispersal on islands; the seed dispersal effectiveness and the relative roles of different frugivore guilds (birds and reptiles being the most important); and patterns of community organization and their drivers as revealed by interaction networks. Island systems are characterized by the extinction of many natives and endemics, and high rates of species introductions. Therefore, understanding how these losses and additions alter seed dispersal processes has been a prevailing goal of island studies and an essential foundation for the effective restoration and conservation of islands. Introduction: Lactate is a useful prognostic marker, as its level increases in hypoxic tissue and/or during accelerated aerobic glycolysis due to excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation and decreased lactate clearance. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign Bundle 2018 Update suggests premeasurement of lactate within 2–4 h so that physicians perform, assist, administer, and introduce lactate-guided resuscitation to reduce mortality due to sepsis. Methods: A total of 108 patients with septic shock who underwent continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for acute kidney injury were enrolled in this observational study. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected, and patients were divided into two groups: survivors and non-survivors. Results: Multivariate analysis demonstrated that lactate levels at 24 h after initiation of CRRT treatment, but not lactate levels at intensive care unit (ICU) admission, were associated with mortality. Lactate clearance was associated with lower mortality among the survivors (OR = 0.140) at 6 h after ICU admission and late mortality (OR = 0.260) after 24 h. The area under the ROC curves for mortality was 0.682 for initial lactate; 0.797 for lactate at 24 h; and 0.816 for lactate clearance at 24 h. Conclusions: Our result reinforces that the determination of lactate dynamics represents a good predictor for mortality, and serial lactate measurements may be more useful prognostic markers than initial lactate in patients with septic shock. Background: During the physiological cardiac cycle, the helix orientation of the muscle fibres induces the rotation of the apex relative to the base of the left ventricular (LV). In heart failure, LV torsion is impaired, and rotation at basal and apical levels occurs in the same direction, a phenomenon called rigid body rotation (RBR). We aimed to evaluate whether the RBR pattern and GLS together could improve the diagnosis of cardiotoxicity in patients treated with anthracyclines and/or anti-HER2. Methods: With an observational, retrospective study involving 175 patients (mean age 55 ± 12 years, 94% females), we evaluated the development of cancer therapeutic–related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) defined according to ESC guidelines. We characterised LV dysfunction by echocardiographic standard and speckle-tracking (GLS and RBR pattern) measurements. Patients with a previous diagnosis of structural heart disease or atrial fibrillation were excluded. Results: At the time of enrolment, the chemotherapy regimen included trastuzumab (96%), pertuzumab (21%), and anthracyclines (13%). Twenty-two patients (12.5%) developed cardiotoxicity, and thirteen patients developed an RBR within 6 months of follow-up. In all cases, the RBR pattern was associated with cardiotoxicity (p < 0.001), reporting an optimal specificity but poor sensitivity at three and six months. However, the addition of the RBR pattern to the global longitudinal strain (GLS) ≥ −16% increased the odds ratio (OR) from 25.6 to 32.6 at three months and from 32.5 to 49.6 at six months rather than GLS alone. BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) has significant patient morbidity and recurrence that drives the management towards less invasive procedures. We describe the different indications of middle meningeal artery embolization (MME) in management of CSDH. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to report and evaluate our institutional experience using MME in management of CSDH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis was conducted between 2020 and 2023, we reviewed the different indications of MME using different embolization material. Clinical and radiological outcomes were described 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. RESULTS: Twenty one CSDHs were treated in 16 patients (5 patients had bilateral CSDH). In patients with bilateral CSDH each hematoma was considered separately. Of the 21 hematomas, 7 (33.3%) were treated upfront without prior surgical treatment, 4 (19.1%) were treated for recurrence after prior surgical evacuation, and 10 (47.6%) were treated prophylactically following surgical evacuation. Post embolization, one hematoma needed to be evacuated due to failure of hematoma volume reduction. By the end of one year follow up, 50% reduction in hematoma size was achieved in 13 hematomas (62%), while total disappearance was evident in 7 hematomas (33.3%). Recurrence was noted in one patient on renal dialysis which was managed conservatively. The modified Rankin scale (mRS) improved after 6 months in comparison to the admission time from 3 ± 1.2 to 1.6 ± 0.63 with p value of 0.003. CONCLUSION: The MME is a safe and effective technique that should be considered in management of CSDH in patients with multiple morbidities and patients who have high risk of recurrence. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a systemic autoinflammatory disorder caused by inherited mutations in the MEFV (Mediterranean FeVer) gene, located on chromosome 16 (16p13.3) and encoding the pyrin protein. Despite the existing data on MEFV mutations, the exact mechanism of their effect on the development of the pathological processes leading to the spontaneous and recurrent autoinflammatory attacks observed in FMF, remains unclear. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are considered an important tool to study the molecular genetic mechanisms of various diseases due to their ability to differentiate into any cell type, including macrophages, which contribute to the development of FMF. In this study, we developed iPSCs from an Armenian patient with FMF carrying the M694V, p.(Met694Val) (c.2080A>G, rs61752717) pathogenic mutation in exon 10 of the MEFV gene. As a result of direct differentiation, macrophages expressing CD14 and CD45 surface markers were obtained. We found that the morphology of macrophages derived from iPSCs of a patient with the MEFV mutation significantly differed from that of macrophages derived from iPSCs of a healthy donor carrying the wild-type MEFV gene. Background: Malnutrition is related to impaired oral health and function that causes poor dietary intake, declining the general health of older adults. The role of dietary intake in the association between oral function and nutritional status of Chinese older adults (aged 75 and above) was examined in this cross-sectional study. Methods: Through the randomized cluster sampling method, 267 older adults living in rural areas of Qingdao, Shandong (aged 81.4 ± 4.3, 75–94 years) were chosen as the primary research participants. A Mini Nutritional Assessment - Short Form was used to determine nutritional status, and Food Frequency Questionnaire and 24-hour Food Intake Recall were used to assess dietary intake. The oral function was evaluated by analyzing the teeth, oral problems, bite force, tongue pressure, lip sealing pressure, chewing function questionnaire, whole saliva flow rate, 10-Item Eating Assessment Tool, and water swallow test. Results: Based on the MNA-SF score, it was divided into a well-nourished group and a malnutrition group, with the malnutrition group comprising 40.6% of participants. The participants in the malnutrition group showed a higher rate of xerostomia, lower bite force, tongue pressure, and lip sealing pressure, and higher Chewing Function Questionnaire and 10-Item Eating Assessment Tool scores. Furthermore, their plant fat, iron, cereals and potatoes, vegetables, fruits, and seafood intake were relatively low. The regression model indicated that exercise frequency, stroke, chewing and swallowing function, intake of vegetables and fruits were risk factors for nutritional status of older adults. Conclusion: Malnutrition was relatively common among the Chinese older adults aged 75 and above, and it was significantly correlated with exercise frequency, stroke, chewing and swallowing function, and intake of vegetables and fruits. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, for which cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone with rituximab(R–CHOP) is one of the standard regimens. Given that R–CHOP is highly emetogenic, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) prevention is clinically important. However, there is a paucity of studies focusing on these patients. This study aimed to ascertain the effectiveness of an oral fixed-dose combination of netupitant and palonosetron (NEPA) in preventing CINV in patients with DLBCL undergoing first-line R-CHOP chemotherapy. Seventy patients were enrolled in this single-center prospective non-comparative study conducted between November 2020 and May 2023 in South Korea. NEPA was administered 1 h prior to chemotherapy initiation on day 1. The primary endpoint of the study was the complete response rate (no emesis, and no rescue medication) during the acute, delayed, and overall phases, which were assessed over a period of 120 h post-chemotherapy. The complete response rates for NEPA were 90.0% [95% CI 80.5, 95.9] for the acute phase, 85.7% [95% CI 75.3, 92.9] for the delayed phase, and 84.3% [95% CI 73.6, 91.9] for the overall phase, with no-emesis rates (acute: 97.1% [95% CI 97.1, 99.7], delayed: 95.7% [95% CI 88.0, 99.1], overall: 92.9% [95% CI 84.1, 97.6]). NEPA was well tolerated with no severe treatment-emergent adverse events. NEPA exhibited substantial efficacy in mitigating CINV in DLBCL patients undergoing R–CHOP chemotherapy, demonstrating high CR and no-emesis rates, and favorable safety profiles. Meningioma is the most common primary brain tumor and many studies have evaluated numerous biomarkers for their prognostic value, often with inconsistent results. Currently, no reliable biomarkers are available to predict the survival, recurrence, and progression of meningioma patients in clinical practice. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of immunohistochemistry-based (IHC) biomarkers of meningioma patients. A systematic literature search was conducted up to November 2023 on PubMed, CENTRAL, CINAHL Plus, and Scopus databases. Two authors independently reviewed the identified relevant studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the studies included. Meta-analyses were performed with the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and progression-free survival (PFS). The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool. A total of 100 studies with 16,745 patients were included in this review. As the promising markers to predict OS of meningioma patients, Ki-67/MIB-1 (HR = 1.03, 95%CI 1.02 to 1.05) was identified to associate with poor prognosis of the patients. Overexpression of cyclin A (HR = 4.91, 95%CI 1.38 to 17.44), topoisomerase II α (TOP2A) (HR = 4.90, 95%CI 2.96 to 8.12), p53 (HR = 2.40, 95%CI 1.73 to 3.34), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (HR = 1.61, 95%CI 1.36 to 1.90), and Ki-67 (HR = 1.33, 95%CI 1.21 to 1.46), were identified also as unfavorable prognostic biomarkers for poor RFS of meningioma patients. Conversely, positive progesterone receptor (PR) and p21 staining were associated with longer RFS and are considered biomarkers of favorable prognosis of meningioma patients (HR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.88 and HR = 1.89, 95%CI 1.11 to 3.20). Additionally, high expression of Ki-67 was identified as a prognosis biomarker for poor PFS of meningioma patients (HR = 1.02, 95%CI 1.00 to 1.04). Although only in single studies, KPNA2, CDK6, Cox-2, MCM7 and PCNA are proposed as additional markers with high expression that are related with poor prognosis of meningioma patients. In conclusion, the results of the meta-analysis demonstrated that PR, cyclin A, TOP2A, p21, p53, VEGF and Ki-67 are either positively or negatively associated with survival of meningioma patients and might be useful biomarkers to assess the prognosis. We report a new quaternary compound, ThV2Si2C, containing V2C square nets that are sandwiched by Si sheets. The compound crystallizes in a CeCr2Si2C-type structure with cell parameters of a = b = 4.1008 Å and c = 5.4150 Å. Magnetic, electrical transport, and specific heat measurements confirm the Pauli paramagnetic metal behavior in ThV2Si2C, concomitant with low magnetoresistance. At temperatures below 2 K, a possible weak superconducting transition is found. First-principles calculations reveal that V-3d orbitals dominate the electronic states at around the Fermi energy. These states predominantly originate from the dx2−y2, dz2, and dyz orbitals, defining the primarily anisotropic nature of conduction within the V2Si2C block. This study aimed to develop the Food Acceptance Questionnaire (FAQ) to assess the masticatory ability of Thai older adults (≥60 years). Fifty participants were interviewed using open-ended questions about food they regularly consumed and avoided due to difficulty chewing. From a list of 140 items, 100 were recruited for a trial version of the FAQ. A total of 154 participants responded to the 5-point Likert scale on their chewing perception of each food item (1, impossible to chew; 5, most easily eaten). The average response of each food item was used as the chewing index (CI). The 100 food items were ranked and divided into five grades based on their CIs. Masticatory performance (MP) was objectively assessed by a visual scoring method using gummy jelly (UHA Mikakuto). Two foods from each grade that demonstrated the highest correlation with MP were selected to form the final 10-item FAQ. The FAQ score was calculated by summarizing the responses of 10 items. MP correlated strongly with the FAQ score (r = 0.57, p < 0.001), indicating its predictive validity. Furthermore, the FAQ indicates strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.90), indicating high reliability. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury causes liver damage during surgery. In hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, the blood coagulation cascade is activated, causing microcirculatory incompetence and cellular injury. Coagulation factor Xa (FXa)- protease-activated receptor (PAR)-2 signaling activates inflammatory reactions and the cytoprotective effect of FXa inhibitor in several organs. However, no studies have elucidated the significance of FXa inhibition on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. The present study elucidated the treatment effect of an FXa inhibitor, edoxaban, on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, focusing on FXa-PAR-2 signaling. A 60 min hepatic partial-warm ischemia-reperfusion injury mouse model and a hypoxia-reoxygenation model of hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells were used. Ischemia-reperfusion injury mice and hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells were treated and pretreated, respectively with or without edoxaban. They were incubated during hypoxia/reoxygenation in vitro. Cell signaling was evaluated using the PAR-2 knockdown model. In ischemia-reperfusion injury mice, edoxaban treatment significantly attenuated fibrin deposition in the sinusoids and liver histological damage and resulted in both anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury upregulated PAR-2 generation and enhanced extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2) activation; however, edoxaban treatment reduced PAR-2 generation and suppressed ERK 1/2 activation in vivo. In the hypoxia/reoxygenation model of sinusoidal endothelial cells, hypoxia/reoxygenation stress increased FXa generation and induced cytotoxic effects. Edoxaban protected sinusoidal endothelial cells from hypoxia/reoxygenation stress and reduced ERK 1/2 activation. PAR-2 knockdown in the sinusoidal endothelial cells ameliorated hypoxia/reoxygenation stress-induced cytotoxicity and suppressed ERK 1/2 phosphorylation. Thus, edoxaban ameliorated hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury in mice by protecting against micro-thrombosis in sinusoids and suppressing FXa-PAR-2-induced inflammation in the sinusoidal endothelial cells. Myocardial necrosis following the successful reperfusion of a coronary artery occluded by thrombus in a patient presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) continues to be a serious problem, despite the multiple attempts to attenuate the necrosis with agents that have shown promise in pre-clinical investigations. Possible reasons include confounding clinical risk factors, the delayed application of protective agents, poorly designed pre-clinical investigations, the possible effects of routinely administered agents that might unknowingly already have protected the myocardium or that might have blocked protection, and the biological differences of the myocardium in humans and experimental animals. A better understanding of the pathobiology of myocardial infarction is needed to stem this reperfusion injury. P2Y12 receptor antagonists minimize platelet aggregation and are currently part of the standard treatment to prevent thrombus formation and propagation in STEMI protocols. Serendipitously, these P2Y12 antagonists also dramatically attenuate reperfusion injury in experimental animals and are presumed to provide a similar protection in STEMI patients. However, additional protective agents are needed to further diminish reperfusion injury. It is possible to achieve additive protection if the added intervention protects by a mechanism different from that of P2Y12 antagonists. Inflammation is now recognized to be a critical factor in the complex intracellular response to ischemia and reperfusion that leads to tissue necrosis. Interference with cardiomyocyte inflammasome assembly and activation has shown great promise in attenuating reperfusion injury in pre-clinical animal models. And the blockade of the executioner protease caspase-1, indeed, supplements the protection already seen after the administration of P2Y12 antagonists. Importantly, protective interventions must be applied in the first minutes of reperfusion, if protection is to be achieved. Background: In bypass surgery for moyamoya disease (MMD), the superficial temporal artery's (STA) pressure needs to surpass that of the cortical M4 recipient of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), boosting cerebral blood flow into the MCA and enhancing cerebral circulation. This study investigates the STA-MCA arterial pressure parameters and gradients during bypass surgery, aiming to deepen our understanding of hemodynamic shifts pre- and post-operation. Methods: DSA imaging data were prospectively collected from patients diagnosed with bilateral MMD who underwent STA-MCA bypass surgery between 2022 and 2023 and stratified according to the Suzuki stage. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the donor and recipient arteries was directly measured during the STA-MCA bypass procedure, and these data were statistically analyzed and evaluated. Results: Among 48 MMD patients, Suzuki grading revealed that 43.8% were in early stages (II and III), while 56.2% were in advanced stages (IV, V, and VI). Predominantly, 77.1% presented with ischemic-type MMD and 22.9% with hemorrhagic type. Pre-bypass assessments showed that 62.5% exhibited antegrade blood flow direction, and 37.5% had retrograde. The mean recipient artery pressure was 35.0 ± 2.3 mmHg, with a mean donor-recipient pressure gradient (δP) of 46.4 ± 2.5 mmHg between donor and recipient arteries. Post-bypass, mean recipient artery pressure increased to 73.3 ± 1.6 mmHg. No significant correlation (r = 0.18, P = 0.21) was noted between δP and Suzuki staging. Conclusion: Our study elucidated that cerebral blood pressure significantly decreases beyond the moyamoya network at the distal M4 segment. Furthermore, we observed bidirectional flow in MCA territories and a significant positive pressure gradient between the STA and M4 segments. The lack of correlation between Suzuki stages and M4 pressures indicates that angiographic severity may not reflect hemodynamic conditions before surgery, highlighting the need for customized surgical approaches. Microbial communities inhabiting sedimentary environments in river source regions serve as pivotal indicators of pristine river ecosystems. While the correlation between antibiotic resistome and pathogenicity with core gut bacteria in humans is well established, there exists a significant knowledge gap concerning the interaction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human pathogenic bacteria (HPB) with specific microbes in river source basins, often referred to as "terrestrial gut". Understanding the microbial composition, including bacteria and resident genetic elements such as ARGs, HPB, Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs), and Virulence Factors (VFs), within natural habitats against the backdrop of global change, is imperative. To address this gap, an enrichment-based culturomics complementary along with metagenomics was conducted in this study to characterize the microbial biobank and provide preliminary ecological insights into profiling the dissemination of ARGs in the Lancang River Source Basin. Based on our findings, in the main stream of the Lancang River Source Basin, 674 strains of bacteria, comprising 540 strains under anaerobic conditions and 124 under aerobic conditions, were successfully isolated. Among these, 98 species were identified as known species, while 4 were potential novel species. Of these 98 species, 30 were HPB relevant to human health. Additionally, bacA and bacitracin emerged as the most abundant ARGs and antibiotics in this river, respectively. Furthermore, the risk assessment of ARGs predominantly indicated the lowest risk rank (Rank Ⅳ) in terms of endangering human health. In summary, enrichment-based culturomics proved effective in isolating rare and unknown bacteria, particularly under anaerobic conditions. Cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) is a key cell cycle regulator, with essential roles during G1/S transition. The clinicopathological significance of CDK2 in ductal carcinomas in situ (DCIS) and early-stage invasive breast cancers (BCs) remains largely unknown. Here, we evaluated CDK2's protein expression in 479 BC samples and 216 DCIS specimens. Analysis of CDK2 transcripts was completed in the METABRIC cohort (n = 1980) and TCGA cohort (n = 1090), respectively. A high nuclear CDK2 protein expression was significantly associated with aggressive phenotypes, including a high tumour grade, lymph vascular invasion, a poor Nottingham prognostic index (all p-values < 0.0001), and shorter survival (p = 0.006), especially in luminal BC (p = 0.009). In p53-mutant BC, high nuclear CDK2 remained linked with worse survival (p = 0.01). In DCIS, high nuclear/low cytoplasmic co-expression showed significant association with a high tumour grade (p = 0.043), triple-negative and HER2-enriched molecular subtypes (p = 0.01), Comedo necrosis (p = 0.024), negative ER status (p = 0.004), negative PR status (p < 0.0001), and a high proliferation index (p < 0.0001). Tumours with high CDK2 transcripts were more likely to have higher expressions of genes involved in the cell cycle, homologous recombination, and p53 signaling. We provide compelling evidence that high CDK2 is a feature of aggressive breast cancers. The clinical evaluation of CDK2 inhibitors in early-stage BC patients will have a clinical impact. To determine the effects of mat Pilates training on blood pressure, inflammatory, and antioxidative markers in hypertensive elderly people, 34 hypertensive subjects aged 60–75 years were randomly divided into a control group (CON; n = 17) and a mat Pilates training group (MP; n = 17). The CON participants conducted normal daily activities and participated in neither organized exercises nor sports training, while those in the MP group received mat Pilates training for 60 min three times/week for 12 weeks. Parameters including blood pressure, cardiovascular function, nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrotic factor-alpha (TNF-α), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malonaldehyde (MDA) were collected at baseline and the end of 12 weeks. The MP group had significantly decreased blood pressure, improved cardiovascular variables, decreased MDA and TNF-α, and increased NO and SOD compared with the CON group and the pre-training period (p < 0.05). In conclusion, these findings demonstrate the positive effects of 12 weeks of mat Pilates training in terms of reducing blood pressure and increasing blood flow related to improvements in anti-inflammatory and antioxidative markers in hypertensive elderly people. A familiar polyalcohol, 1,2-propanediol (12PDO), is among the simple alcoholic solvents with high solubility for lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), as well as a wide temperature range for liquids. The viscosity of 12PDO solutions containing LiBF4 was measured in the temperature range of 280‒340 K using a vibrational viscometer, and it exhibited non-Arrhenius behavior fitted with the Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman (VFT) equation, which is an empirical model for describing liquid dynamics. The viscosity (η) increased with the increasing mole fraction of LiBF4 (x), and the variation in η was found to be mainly controlled by the pre-exponential factor η0 in the VFT expression. The VFT-fitting parameters, the strength parameter (D), and ideal glass transition temperature (T0), which indicate the Arrhenius behavior and an ideal glass transition temperature, respectively, correlated with the thermal analysis results that were obtained via differential scanning calorimetry. With the increasing x, the value of D decreased rapidly for x < 0.20, whereas it remained approximately unchanged for x > 0.20. The concentration dependence of T0 also differed at approximately x = 0.20. The changes in D and T0 with x indicated that the intrinsic hydrogen-bonding networks between the solvent molecules were rapidly destroyed by the added ions at reduced salt concentrations, while such a structural breaking effect of the added ions weakened owing to ion associations at increased salt concentrations. Background: The main issues faced during the treatment of apical periodontitis are the management of bacterial infection and the facilitation of the repair of alveolar bone defects to shorten disease duration. Conventional root canal irrigants are limited in their efficacy and are associated with several side effects. This study introduces a synergistic therapy based on nitric oxide (NO) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the treatment of apical periodontitis. Results: This research developed a multifunctional nanoparticle, CGP, utilizing guanidinylated poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (ε-Caprolactone) polymer as a carrier, internally loaded with the photosensitizer chlorin e6. During root canal irrigation, the guanidino groups on the surface of CGP enabled effective biofilm penetration. These groups undergo oxidation by hydrogen peroxide in the aPDT process, triggering the release of NO without hindering the production of singlet oxygen. The generated NO significantly enhanced the antimicrobial capability and biofilm eradication efficacy of aPDT. Furthermore, CGP not only outperforms conventional aPDT in eradicating biofilms but also effectively promotes the repair of alveolar bone defects post-eradication. Importantly, our findings reveal that CGP exhibits significantly higher biosafety compared to sodium hypochlorite, alongside superior therapeutic efficacy in a rat model of apical periodontitis. Introduction: Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) that is associated with structural and functional changes in the brain. However, whether a joint structural and functional alteration pattern exists that is related to CI in ESRD is unclear. Methods: In this study, instead of looking at brain structure and function separately, we aim to investigate the covariant characteristics of both functional and structural aspects. Specifically, we took the fusion analysis approach, namely, multimodal canonical correlation analysis and joint independent component analysis (mCCA+jICA), to jointly study the discriminative features in gray matter volume (GMV) measured by T1-weighted (T1w) MRI, fractional anisotropy (FA) in white matter measured by diffusion MRI, and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) measured by blood oxygenation-leveldependent (BOLD) MRI in 78 ESRD patients versus 64 healthy controls (HCs), followed by a mediation effect analysis to explore the relationship between neuroimaging findings, cognitive impairments and uremic toxins. Results: Two joint group-discriminative independent components (ICs) were found to show covariant abnormalities across FA, GMV, and ALFF (all p < 0.05). The most dominant joint IC revealed associative patterns of alterations of GMV (in the precentral gyrus, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, parahippocampal gyrus, and hippocampus), alterations of ALFF (in the precuneus, superior parietal gyrus, and superior occipital gyrus), and of white matter FA (in the corticospinal tract and inferior frontal occipital fasciculus). Another significant IC revealed associative alterations of GMV (in the dorsolateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex) and FA (in the forceps minor). Moreover, the brain changes identified by FA and GMV in the above-mentioned brain regions were found to mediate the negative correlation between serum phosphate and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: The mCCA+jICA method was demonstrated to be capable of revealing covariant abnormalities across neuronal features of different types in ESRD patients as contrasted to HCs, and joint brain changes may play an important role in mediating the relationship between serum toxins and CIs in ESRD. A new layered titanoniobate, Li3Ti5NbO14, a member of the AxM2nO4n+2 family, has been synthesized using a molten salt reaction between H3Ti5NbO14 and an eutectic mixture of LiOH and LiNO3. This compound crystallizes in the P21/m space group with a = 9.273(15) Å, b = 3.788(6) Å, c = 8.871(3) Å, and β = 114.33(1)°, as determined by 3D electron diffraction single crystal analysis. It exhibits [Ti5NbO14]3− layers similar to K3Ti5NbO14, but differs from the latter by a 'parallel configuration' of its [Ti5NbO5]3− ribbons between the two successive layers. The topotactic character of the reaction suggests that exfoliation plays a prominent role in the synthesis of this new form. Layered metal oxychalcogenide materials have gained significant attention in recent years due to their numerous applications in various emerging fields. The bismuth (Bi) based ternary and quaternary oxychalcogenide materials have become popular due to their excellent potential in optoelectronic, thermoelectric, and semiconducting applications. Adding copper (Cu) to these building matrices has enhanced their usefulness in various ways. In this work, Bi and Cu-based ternary and quaternary layered oxytellurides are synthesized using a unique, rarely used "microwave (MW) assisted method," and their temperature and laser power-dependent Raman measurements are carried out. All the samples are prepared at the same MW power and at a fixed irradiation time. Crystallographic studies show that the good crystallinity of the synthesized materials matches well with the phases reported previously. Nanosheet-like morphology was observed for all the prepared samples. The optical properties and band gap energies of these materials were obtained using the diffuse reflectance spectroscopy technique, which are in the range of 1.15–2.52 eV. The photoluminescence spectrum shows broad peaks around orange-red regions, indicating the potential applicability of these materials in various optoelectronic applications. The effect of high temperature and laser power on the Raman spectra of the oxytellurides is demonstrated, where the appearance of different vibrational modes along with a redshift in peak positions with the increase in temperature and power is observed. Background: Curcumin (CUR), an effective traditional Chinese medicinal extract, displays good anti-cancer activity against various cancers. Nevertheless, the impacts and fundamental mechanisms of CUR to treat esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) yet to be comprehensively clarified. This study examined the suppressive impacts of CUR on ESCC. Methods: For a comprehensive understanding of the effect of CUR in ESCC. The CUR targets and ESCC-related genes were identified respectively, and the intersection targets between CUR and ESCC were acquired. Then, we examined the intersection targets and discovered genes that were expressed differently in ESCC. Using DAVID, enrichment analyses were conducted on the targets of CUR-ESCC. The STRING database and Cytoscape v.3.9.1 were utilized to build networks for protein-protein interaction (PPI) and drug-target-pathway. Furthermore, the interactions between CUR and its core targets were confirmed by molecular docking studies. To confirm the effects of CUR on ESCC cells, in vitro experiments were finally conducted. Results: Overall, 47 potential CUR targets for ESCC treatment were identified. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis identified 61 signaling pathways, primarily associated with the FoxO signaling, the cell cycle, cellular senescence, the IL-17 signaling pathway which play important roles in ESCC progression. In the PPI network and the docking results identified CHEK1 and CDK6 as the core targets that positively associated with ESCC survival. CUR arrested ESCC cells at the G2/M and S phases, as shown by flow cytometry. Colony formation and CCK8 assays showed that CUR can inhibit the proliferative ability of ESCC cells. The Transwell invasion results validated that CUR can significantly inhibit the invasion rates of ESCC cells. This study investigated the relative influences of environmental, spatial, and historical factors, including the island‐specific history of land connectivity, on bat assemblages in the Japanese Archipelago. We collected bat distribution data from 1408 studies and assigned them to Japan's First Standard Grid (approximately 6400 km2). Japanese bat assemblages were analyzed at two scales: the entire Japanese Archipelago comprised 16 islands and exclusively the four main islands. At first, we calculated taxonomic and functional total beta diversity (βtotal) by Jaccard pairwise dissimilarity and then divided this into turnover (βrepl) and richness‐difference (βrich) components. We conducted hierarchical clustering of taxonomic beta diversity to examine the influence of the two representative sea straits, Tsugaru and Tokara, which are considered biogeographical borders. Variation partitioning was conducted to evaluate the relative effects of the three factors on the beta diversity. Clustering revealed that the Tokara Strait bordered the two major clades; however, the Tsugaru Strait did not act as a biogeographical border for bats. In the variation partitioning, shared fraction between spatial and historical factors significantly explained taxonomic and functional βtotal and taxonomic βrepl at the entire archipelago scale, but not at the four main islands scale extending only Tsugaru Strait but not Tokara Strait. Pure environmental factors significantly explained functional βtotal at both scales and taxonomic βtotal only at the four main islands scale. These results suggest that spatial and historical factors are more pronounced in biogeographical borders, primarily structuring assemblage composition at the entire archipelago scale, especially in taxonomic dimension. However, current environmental factors primarily shape the assemblage composition of Japanese bats at the main island scale. The difference in results between the two scales highlights that the primary processes governing assemblages of both dimensions depend on the quality of the dispersal barriers between terrestrial and aquatic barriers for bats. Simple Summary: Phenotypic difference between males and females (sexual dimorphism) is widespread in animals. These sexual dimorphisms, in particular vocalizations and acoustic signals, have been shown to play important roles in mating choice and sexual selection. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying these phenotypic variations. In this study, we used the four taxa of the horseshoe bats to explore the patterns of gene regulations responsible for sex differences of echolocation pulse frequency. By analyzing the transcriptomes of both males and females in each taxon, we identified the genes with either a differential expression or alternative splicing and some of these genes are found to be related to hearing in human or mice. Our results support that differences in the degree of phenotypic sexual dimorphism can be encoded by the magnitude of sex-biased gene expression or splicing. In addition, our results indicate that the sex differences of the echolocation pulse may contain multiple parameters apart from the frequency component. Overall, this study provides growing evidences for supporting the important roles of both gene expression changes and alternative splicing in phenotypic variations. Sexual dimorphism of calls is common in animals, whereas studies on the molecular basis underlying this phenotypic variation are still scarce. In this study, we used comparative transcriptomics of cochlea to investigate the sex-related difference in gene expression and alternative splicing in four Rhinolophus taxa. Based on 31 cochlear transcriptomes, we performed differential gene expression (DGE) and alternative splicing (AS) analyses between the sexes in each taxon. Consistent with the degree of difference in the echolocation pulse frequency between the sexes across the four taxa, we identified the largest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and alternatively spliced genes (ASGs) in R. sinicus. However, we also detected multiple DEGs and ASGs in taxa without sexual differences in echolocation pulse frequency, suggesting that these genes might be related to other parameters of echolocation pulse rather than the frequency component. Some DEGs and ASGs are related to hearing loss or deafness genes in human or mice and they can be considered to be candidates associated with the sexual differences of echolocation pulse in bats. We also detected more than the expected overlap of DEGs and ASGs in two taxa. Grain size is a quantitative trait with a complex genetic mechanism, characterized by the combination of grain length (GL), grain width (GW), length to width ration (LWR), and grain thickness (GT). In this study, we conducted quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis to investigate the genetic basis of grain size using BC1F2 and BC1F2:3 populations derived from two indica lines, Guangzhan 63-4S (GZ63-4S) and TGMS29 (core germplasm number W240). A total of twenty-four QTLs for grain size were identified, among which, three QTLs (qGW1, qGW7, and qGW12) controlling GL and two QTLs (qGW5 and qGL9) controlling GW were validated and subsequently fine mapped to regions ranging from 128 kb to 624 kb. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis and expression analysis revealed that qGW7 influences cell expansion, while qGL9 affects cell division. Conversely, qGW1, qGW5, and qGW12 promoted both cell division and expansion. Furthermore, negative correlations were observed between grain yield and quality for both qGW7 and qGW12. Nevertheless, qGW5 exhibited the potential to enhance quality without compromising yield. Importantly, we identified two promising QTLs, qGW1 and qGL9, which simultaneously improved both grain yield and quality. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding conserved molecules with lengths varying between 18-25nt. Plants miRNAs are very stable, and probably they might have been transferred across kingdoms via food intake. Such miRNAs are also called exogenous miRNAs, which regulate the gene expression in host organisms. The miRNAs present in the cluster bean, a drought tolerant legume crop having high commercial value, might have also played a regulatory role for the genes involved in nutrients synthesis or disease pathways in animals including humans due to dietary intake of plant parts of cluster beans. However, the predictive role of miRNAs of cluster beans for gene–disease association across kingdoms such as cattle and humans are not yet fully explored. Thus, the aim of the present study is to (i) find out the cluster bean miRNAs (cb-miRs) functionally similar to miRNAs of cattle and humans and predict their target genes' involvement in the occurrence of complex diseases, and (ii) identify the role of cb-miRs that are functionally non-similar to the miRNAs of cattle and humans and predict their targeted genes' association with complex diseases in host systems. Here, we predicted a total of 33 and 15 functionally similar cb-miRs (fs-cb-miRs) to human and cattle miRNAs, respectively. Further, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis revealed the participation of targeted genes of fs-cb-miRs in 24 and 12 different pathways in humans and cattle, respectively. Few targeted genes in humans like LCP2, GABRA6, and MYH14 were predicted to be associated with disease pathways of Yesinia infection (hsa05135), neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction (hsa04080), and pathogenic Escherichia coli infection (hsa05130), respectively. However, targeted genes of fs-cb-miRs in humans like KLHL20, TNS1, and PAPD4 are associated with Alzheimer's, malignant tumor of the breast, and hepatitis C virus infection disease, respectively. Similarly, in cattle, targeted genes like ATG2B and DHRS11 of fs-cb-miRs participate in the pathways of Huntington disease and steroid biosynthesis, respectively. Additionally, the targeted genes like SURF4 and EDME2 of fs-cb-miRs are associated with mastitis and bovine osteoporosis, respectively. We also found a few cb-miRs that do not have functional similarity with human and cattle miRNAs but are found to target the genes in the host organisms and as well being associated with human and cattle diseases. Interestingly, a few genes such as NRM, PTPRE and SUZ12 were observed to be associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma and Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma diseases, respectively, in humans and genes like SCNN1B associated with renal disease in cattle. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of cardiovascular death and remains the most common cause of heart failure. Reopening of the occluded artery, i.e., reperfusion, is the only way to save the myocardium. However, the expected benefits of reducing infarct size are disappointing due to the reperfusion paradox, which also induces specific cell death. These ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) lesions can account for up to 50% of final infarct size, a major determinant for both mortality and the risk of heart failure (morbidity). In this review, we provide a detailed description of the cell death and inflammation mechanisms as features of I/R injury and cardioprotective strategies such as ischemic postconditioning as well as their underlying mechanisms. Due to their biological properties, the use of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) has been considered a potential therapeutic approach in AMI. Despite promising results and evidence of safety in preclinical studies using MSCs, the effects reported in clinical trials are not conclusive and even inconsistent. These discrepancies were attributed to many parameters such as donor age, in vitro culture, and storage time as well as injection time window after AMI, which alter MSC therapeutic properties. In the context of AMI, future directions will be to generate MSCs with enhanced properties to limit cell death in myocardial tissue and thereby reduce infarct size and improve the healing phase to increase postinfarct myocardial performance.
