The search for the muonic and the nonleptonio decays of the hypothetical intermediate boson among the neutrino events produced in the CERN neutrino experiment has been continued and concluded. The data do not give any clear evidence for such decays. Comparing the rate of possible boson reactions, observed in the spark chamber and the bubble chamber, with the calculated production rate, we arrive at a lower limit for the boson mass, ranging from 1.7 to 2.2 GeV/c2 for various assumptions about the relative abundanceB of leptonic decays (Table VI).

The correlations in rapidity in hadron production from e+e- annihilation near the Z0 resonance were studied by means of the method of factorial moments, using data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP. We present the first results on inclusive photo-production of prompt photons at high transverse momenta. The data were taken in an open spectrometer at CERN using a high intensity photon beam energy between 50 and 150 GeV. After subtracting the yield of photons from indirect sources, a clear excess is observed for transverse momenta above 2.5 GeV c Deep inelastic Compton scattering with appropriate QCD corrections account for this excess. The data disfavour the gauge integer charge quark models so far proposed.

A search has been made for pairs of scalar quarks (squarks) produced in e+e- annihilations at LEP (√s≃MZ0), and decaying into a standard quark and a neutral, non-interacting, stable, massive particle (the lightest supersymmetric particle, LSP). The search has been conducted for differences in the mass of the squark and LSP of 2 GeV/c2 and above. Up squarks with masses below 42 GeV/c2 and down squarks below 43 GeV/c2 were excluded. The study of the properties of inclusive production of Ds mesons and of events in which a φ{symbol} and a muon are present in the same jet provides two independent measurements of the probability, fs w, for a heavy quark to hadronize into a strange B or D meson. The data sample analysed corresponds to 243,000 hadronic Z0 decays. The combined value of these measurements is fs w=0.19±0.06±0.08. From the flight distance distributions of Ds and of (φ{symbol}-lepton) secondary vertices, with the lepton emitted at high transverse momentum relative to the jet axis, two values are obtained for the Bs 0 meson lifetime. Combining these measurements with a previous result based on the study of Ds-μ events, the Bs 0 meson lifetime is measured to be: 0.96±0.37 ps. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

From the combined data of 1990 and 1991 of the DELPHI experiment at LEP, 13057 4-jet events are obtained and used for determining the contribution of the triple-gluon vertex. The relevant variables are the generalized Nachtmann Reiter angle θNR* and the opening angle of the two least energetic jets. A fit to their two-dimensional distribution yields {Mathematical expression} where CA/CF is the ratio of the coupling strength of the triple-gluon vertex to that of gluon bremsstrahlung from quarks, and NC/NA, the ratio of the number of quark colours to the number of gluons. This constitutes a convincing model-independent proof of the existence of the triple-gluon vertex, since its contribution is directly proportional to CA/CF. The results are in agreement with the values expected from QCD:CA/CF=2.25, and NC/NA=3/8. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.

The study of the orientation of three-jet events from e + e − → Z 0 → multi-hadrons is presented, in particular the polar angle distributions of the thrust axis and of the normal to the three-jet plane, and the azimuthal correlations between the hadron plane and the one defined by the beam and thrust axes. The data are compared with results at lower energy and with QCD predictions. Good agreement with QCD predictions is observed. The scalar gluon theory is excluded by the data.

A study of the fragmentation properties of charm and bottom quarks intoD mesons is presented. From 263 700Z 0 hadronic decays collected in 1991 with the DELPHI detector at the LEP collider,D 0,D + andD *+ are reconstructed in the modesK − π +,K − π + K + andD 0 π + followed byD 0→K − π +, respectively. The fractional decay widths $$\Gamma {{(Z^0 \to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{(Z^0 \to {D \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {D {\bar D}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\bar D}}X)} {\Gamma _h }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\Gamma _h }}$$ are determined, and first results are presented for the production ofD mesons from $$c\bar c$$ and $$b\bar b$$ events separately. The average energy fraction ofD *± in charm quark fragmentation is found to be 〈X E (D *)〉 c =0.487±0.015 (stat)±0.005 (sys.). Assuming that the fraction ofD s and charm-baryons produced at LEP is similar to that around 10 GeV, theZ 0 partial width into charm quark pairs is determined to beΓ c /Γ h =0.187±0.031 (stat)±0.023 (sys). The probability for ab quark to fragment into $$\bar B_s $$ orb-baryons is inferred to be 0.268±0.094 (stat)±0.100 (sys) from the measured probability that it fragments into a $$\bar B^0 $$ orB −.

The pair production of the lightest scalar Higgs boson, h, and a pseudoscalar Higgs boson, A, was searched for in a data sample containing 10 000 hadronic Z0 decays. The search involved both leptonic and purely hadronic decay channels of each Higgs boson. No signal was found, and limits on the Higgs boson masses, in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model, ar reported up to 35 GeV/c2 at 95% CL, for both tan β > 1 and tan β < 1, where tan β is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The production rates for 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-jet hadronic final states have been measured with the DELPHI detector at the e+e- storage ring LEP at centre of mass energies around 91.5 GeV. Fully corrected data are compared to O(αs 2) QCD matrix element calculations and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS is determined for different parametrizations of the renormalization scale μ2. When used in lead-scintillator sandwich calorimetry, scintillating optical fibres offer a new way to achieve fine grain sampling and thereby to improve the energy and spatial resolution of a technique still unbeaten for timing and compactness. A small calorimeter element made of planes of 0.9 mm diameter fibres alternating with Pb plates has been built and tested in an electron beam. An energy resolution of σE/√E⋍9.8 and 7.8% was obtained with 1 and 0.5 mm Pb plates, respectively. The parameters of the fibres have been measured. Calculations performed with a refined version of the EGS code reproduce these results and suggest improved Pb-fibre calorimeters rivalling with Pb glass in energy resolution.

The number of accidental deaths resulting from carbon monoxid asphyxiation has increased to a considerable extent within the last decade. The proper treatment of patients in whom life is not yet extinct is not universally agreed on. This probably, in a measure, is due to the fact that clinicians and pathologists are not yet in unison as to the cause of death in these cases. Whether death is due to a direct action on the central nervous system by the carbon monoxid, as contended by Sibelius,1Traube2and many others, or whether the central nervous system changes are secondary to the more evident blood change as contended by Haldane,3is still a subject of controversy at this late date. - Abstract
The light backscatter signal is the fraction of light scattered at angles greater than 90 degrees with respect to the direction of the incident light. Optical remote sensing platforms collect this signal, which, when measured from the ocean, holds crucial information about its constituents. Interpretation of this signal demands a rigorous understanding of scattering by water and by particles in water. Previous backscatter measurements have mainly focused on resolving the angular distribution of scattering with much less attention given to resolving the wavelength component of backscatter. Most heritage sensors have looked at most 9 wavelengths of light at one scattering angle. Just recently an in situ sensor was presented that can measure backscattering with a 10 nm resolution. Here, we present a laboratory hyperspectral backscatter setup capable of measuring from the ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths (320 - 850 nm) at 2 nm resolution.

The complex HB324 was intensively studied as an apoptosis-inducing compound in resistant cell lines. HB324 induced apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways. Of particular interest is the upregulation of the Harakiri resistance protein, which inhibits the anti-apoptotic and death repressor proteins Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) and BCL-xL (B-cell lymphoma-extra large). Moreover, HB324 showed synergistic activity with various established anticancer drugs and overcame resistance in several cell lines, such as neuroblastoma cells. In conclusion, HB324 showed promising potential as a novel anticancer agent in vitro, suggesting further investigations on this and other preclinical ruthenium drug candidates.

- Abstract
The global spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has called for an urgent need for dedicated antiviral therapeutics. Metal complexes are commonly underrepresented in compound libraries that are used for screening in drug discovery campaigns, however, there is growing evidence for their role in medicinal chemistry. Based on previous results, we have selected more than 100 structurally diverse metal complexes for profiling as inhibitors of two relevant SARS-CoV-2 replication mechanisms, namely the interaction of the spike (S) protein with the ACE2 receptor and the papain-like protease PL
pro . In addition to many well-established types of mononuclear experimental metallodrugs, the pool of compounds tested was extended to approved metal-based therapeutics such as silver sulfadiazine and thiomersal, as well as polyoxometalates (POMs). Among the mononuclear metal complexes, only a small number of active inhibitors of the S/ACE2 interaction was identified, with titanocene dichloride as the only strong inhibitor. However, among the gold and silver containing complexes many turned out to be very potent inhibitors of PLpro activity. Highly promising activity against both targets was noted for many POMs. Selected complexes were evaluated in antiviral SARS-CoV-2 assays confirming activity for gold complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) or dithiocarbamato ligands, a silver NHC complex, titanocene dichloride as well as a POM compound. A series of ruthenium(II) complexes with N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands of the general type (arene)(NHC)Ru(II)X
2 (where X = halide) was prepared, characterized, and evaluated as antibacterial agents in comparison to the respective metal free benzimidazolium cations. The ruthenium(II) NHC complexes generally triggered stronger bacterial growth inhibition than the metal free benzimidazolium cations. The effects were much stronger against Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus ) than against Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli , Acinetobacter baumannii , Pseudomonas aeruginosa ), and all complexes were inactive against the fungus Candida albicans . Moderate inhibition of bacterial thioredoxin reductase was confirmed for selected complexes, indicating that inhibition of this enzyme might be a contributing factor to the antibacterial effects.- Published

- Abstract
Drug resistance to existing anticancer agents is a growing clinical concern, with many first line treatments showing poor efficacy in treatment plans of some cancers. Resistance to platinum agents, such as cisplatin, is particularly prevalent in the treatment of ovarian cancer, one of the most common cancers amongst women in the developing world. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop next generation of anticancer agents which can overcome resistance to existing therapies. We report a new series of organoruthenium(II) complexes bearing structurally modified pyrithione ligands with extended aromatic scaffold, which overcome platinum and adriamycin resistance in human ovarian cancer cells. The mechanism of action of such complexes appears to be unique from that of cisplatin, involving G
1 cell cycle arrest without generation of cellular ROS, as is typically associated with similar ruthenium complexes. The complexes inhibit the enzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) in a model system and reduce cell motility towards wound healing. Importantly, this work highlights further development in our understanding of the multi-targeting mechanism of action exhibited by transition metal complexes.- Published

- Abstract
Introduction: The safety of first-line (1L) durvalumab in patients with advanced nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 2 (PS2) is unknown. This is an interim unplanned safety analysis of the study SAKK 19/17 for patients with metastatic NSCLC with programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in ≥ 25% of tumor cells and an ECOG PS2 treated with 1L durvalumab. This safety analysis was triggered by the SAKK data and safety monitoring board due to a high mortality rate observed after the recruitment of the first 21 patients., Methods: This single-arm phase II study recruited patients with metastatic NSCLC with PD-L1 in ≥ 25% and ECOG PS2. Patients received durvalumab 1500 mg every four weeks. The trial aims to recruit 48 patients in total. This report includes safety analyses only. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed using National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for AEs (NCI CTCAE) Version 5.0. Efficacy data including the primary endpoint overall survival at 6 months and secondary endpoints (objective response rate, progression-free survival, and quality of life) will be reported at a later time point., Results: The data from 21 patients were available at this interim safety analysis. Among these, 13 deaths (13/21; 62%) were reported, including one treatment-related fatal colonic perforation at 9 months after treatment initiation (1/13; 8%). Twelve deaths were not treatment-related (12/13; 92%), and mostly attributed to tumor progression (10/13; 77%). Of note, seven deaths (7/13; 54%) occurred during the first 5 weeks (range 0.6-4.7 weeks) after treatment initiation. Four (4/7; 57%) were respiratory failures attributed to tumor progression. One of these patients (25%) had pre-existing COPD, and three (75%) had baseline dyspnea grade 2-3 related to the tumor. Grade ≥ 3 treatment-related AEs (TRAEs) included colonic perforation (grade 5), abdominal pain, and colitis (grade 3 each) in one patient, and fatigue (grade 3) in another. Other Grade ≥ 3 AEs unrelated to treatment were all of pulmonary origin: lung infections (19%), dyspnea (24%), cough (5%), and bronchial obstruction (5%)., Conclusions: 1L durvalumab in patients with ECOG PS2 and metastatic NSCLC with PD-L1 expression ≥ 25% resulted in an unexpectedly high number of fatal early events due to rapid tumor progression. We recommend to avoid treatment with 1 L durvalumab of patients who are highly symptomatic from the tumor, particularly those with respiratory symptoms. The study is continuing its accrual after an amendment excluding these patients.

- Abstract
An organoruthenium(II) complex with pyrithione (2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide) 1 a has previously been identified by our group as a compound with promising anticancer potential without cytotoxicity towards non-cancerous cells. To expand the rather limited research on compounds of this type, an array of novel chlorido and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (pta) organoruthenium(II) complexes with methyl-substituted pyrithiones has been prepared. After thorough investigation of the aqueous stability of these complexes, their modes of action have been elucidated at the cellular level. Minor structural alterations in the ruthenium-pyrithionato compounds resulted in fine-tuning of their cytotoxicities. The best performing compounds, 1 b and 2 b, with a chlorido or pta ligand bound to ruthenium, respectively, and a methyl group at the 3-position of the pyrithione scaffold, have been further investigated. Both compounds trigger early apoptosis, induce the generation of reactive oxygen species and G1 arrest in A549 cancer cells, and show no strong interaction with DNA. However, only 1 b also inhibits thioredoxin reductase. - Abstract
The promise of the metal(arene) structure as an anticancer pharmacophore has prompted intensive exploration of this chemical space. While N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands are widely used in catalysis, they have only recently been considered in metal complexes for medicinal applications. Surprisingly, a comparatively small number of studies have been reported in which the NHC ligand was coordinated to the Ru
II (arene) pharmacophore and even less with an OsII (arene) pharmacophore. Here, we present a systematic study in which we compared symmetrically substituted methyl and benzyl derivatives with the nonsymmetric methyl/benzyl analogues. Through variation of the metal center and the halido ligands, an in-depth study was conducted on ligand exchange properties of these complexes and their biomolecule binding, noting in particular the stability of the M-CNHC bond. In addition, we demonstrated the ability of the complexes to inhibit the selenoenzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), suggested as an important target for anticancer metal-NHC complexes, and their cytotoxicity in human tumor cells. It was found that the most potent TrxR inhibitor diiodido(1,3-dibenzylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene)(η6 -p-cymene)ruthenium(II) 1bI was also the most cytotoxic compound of the series, with the antiproliferative effects in general in the low to middle micromolar range. However, since there was no clear correlation between TrxR inhibition and antiproliferative potency across the compounds, TrxR inhibition is unlikely to be the main mode of action for the compound type and other target interactions must be considered in future.- Published

- Abstract
The use of radiotherapy in the management of carcinoma of the esophagus and gastro-esophageal junction has undergone much evolution over the past 2 decades. Advances to define its role have been slow with meta-analyses often providing the most useful data. In spite of this many institutions around the world are divided about the role of radiotherapy in this disease and attribute different roles to radiotherapy based on clinical stage, tumor site and histology. The purpose of this review is to try to define the role of radiotherapy given our current knowledge base and to review which current and future trials may fill the gaps of knowledge that we currently have. It will also highlight the difficulties in making firm recommendations about the use of radiotherapy especially in a time when technology and treatments are rapidly evolving.
