Littoral nemerteans specimens have been collected in recent years including the second quarter of 1990, from various sites on the north and north‐west Spanish Atlantic coasts. They belong to 20 species, 8 of which described and classified here, are new to the fauna of the region: Procephalothrix filiformis, Baseodiscus delineatus, Lineus ruber, L. sanguineus, Amphiporus lactifloreus, Emplectonema echinoderma, E. gracile, Tetrastemma longissimum. The remaining 12 species, previously reported from the area are Cephalothrix rufifrons, Tubulanus annulatus, Cerebratulus marginatus, C. roseus, Lineus bilineatus, L. lacteus, I. longissimus, Micrura aurantiaca, M. purpurea, Prosorhochmus claparedii, Tetrastemma melanocephalum, Paradrepanophorus crassus. On the whole, the sample offers an interesting picture of the nemertean fauna of the N and NW Spanish Atlantic coasts, which appears to be strongly linked to that of Brittany and the British Isles.

The photosystem II-herbicide diuron is widely used for weed control in Champagne's vineyards. Its important use and its relative persistence make it of particular interest for ecotoxicological studies. Toxicity of diuron was assessed on Lemna minor L., a representative aquatic macrophyte regularly used for toxicological studies. Toxicity assessments were based on inhibition of growth and total chlorophyll content of L. minor cultures after 7 days. Growth was inhibited and IC 50 and IC 90 were, respectively, 25 and 60 μg l −1 , but chlorophyll content of L. minor increased in response to the herbicide. When diuron was combined with copper, growth inhibition of L. minor depended on the concentrations of both chemicals. For some concentrations, combination of these chemicals resulted in a slight (but non-significant) antagonism. Additivity was observed for all other mixtures. When diuron was combined with folpet, growth and chlorophyll content of L. minor only depended on the concentration of the herbicide. Diuron was also found to prevent the copper-induced decrease of chlorophyll content when it was combined with this metal. A multifactorial model was found more appropriate to characterize interactions between pesticides than Abott's model.

BACKGROUND: Saffold cardiovirus (SAFV) is a new human cardiovirus with 11 identified genotypes. Little is known about the natural history and pathogenicity of SAFVs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We sequenced the genome of five SAFV-1 strains which were identified from fecal samples taken from children with viral diarrhea in Beijing, China between March 2006 and November 2007, and analyzed the phylogenetic and phylodynamic properties of SAFVs using the genome sequences of every known SAFV genotypes. We identified multiple recombination events in our SAFV-1 strains, specifically recombination between SAFV-2, -3, -4, -9, -10 and the prototype SAFV-1 strain in the VP4 region and recombination between SAFV-4, -6, -8, -10, -11 and prototype SAFV-1 in the VP1/2A region. Notably, recombination in the structural gene VP4 is a rare event in Cardiovirus. The ratio of nonsynonymous substitutions to synonymous substitutions indicates a purifying selection of the SAFV genome. Phylogenetic and molecular clock analysis indicates the existence of at least two subclades of SAFV-1 with different origins. Subclade 1 includes two strains isolated from Pakistan, whereas subclade 2 includes the prototype strain and strains isolated in China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The most recent common ancestor of all SAFV genotypes dates to the 1710s, and SAFV-1, -2, and -3 to the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, respectively. No obvious relationship between variation and pathogenicity exists in the critical domains of the CD and EF loops of viral capsid proteins or the multi-functional proteins L based on amino acid sequence identity comparison between SAFV genotypes. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings suggest that intertypic recombination plays an important role in the diversity of SAFVs, highlighting the diversity of the five strains with the previously described SAFV-1 strains.

BACKGROUND: Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) have been implicated as important agents in a wide range of human illnesses. To date, 58 distinct HAdV serotypes have been identified and can be grouped into six species. For the immunological diagnosis of adenoviruses, the hexon protein, a structural protein, has been used. The potential of other HAdV proteins has not been fully addressed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, a nonstructural antigenic protein, the DNA binding protein (DBP) of human adenovirus 5 and 35 (Ad5, Ad35) - was identified using immunoproteomic technology. The expression of Ad5 and Ad35 DBP in insect cells could be detected by rhesus monkey serum antibodies and healthy adult human serum positive for Ad5 and Ad35. Recombinant DBPs elicited high titer antibodies in mice. Their conserved domain displayed immunological cross-reactions with heterologous DBP antibodies in Western blot assays. DBP-IgM ELISA showed higher sensitivity adenovirus IgM detection than the commercial Adenovirus IgM Human ELISA Kit. The acute toxicity and bioaccumulation (rates, kinetic) of tetravalent platinum in Lumbriculus variegatus under different physicochemical conditions (temperature and total water hardness) were investigated. Increased Pt4+ concentration (from 0.05 to 50 mg/L), exposure (up to 30 days), temperature (from 4 to 20 degrees C) and decreasing water hardness (from 300 to 0 mg/L CaCO3) increased Pt toxicity. The metal accumulated at a constant rate that was concentration, temperature and time dependent. The median lethal concentration (96h LC50) varied greatly from 0.397 mg/L in distilled water to 30 mg/L in the hard water from Champagne. Thus, L. var. can tolerate high levels of Pt. As a result, L. var. can be used in the laboratory to analyze mechanisms of adaptation to the induced stress and in the field as an indicator of Pt pollution.

Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract in HAE may produce abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as a result of obstruction produced by bowel wall edema. 6, 7 Patients experiencing intestinal inw~lvement may be seen with findings consistent with an acute abdomen, The patient discussed in this case report was seen with two episodes of HAE mimicking an acute abdomen and underwent surgical evaluation. The findings of abdominal tenderness, fever, leukocytosis, and a left shift in the differential white blood cell count led to serious consideration of exploratory abdominal surgery. Management was made raore difficult by ultrasonographic studies of the abdomen showing significant ascites, which to our knowledge has not been previously reported in HAE. ]Disappearance of the ascitic fluid in 3 days, concomitant with the resolution of abdominal symptoms, and its reappearance during a later episode suggest that the ascites was a manifestation of the HAE. Failure to recognize this concomitant finding in patients with HAE may lead to unwarranted surgical procedures because the nature of abdominal symptoms may be further obscured by the ascites, and exploratory laparotomy may seem advisable. We report this case so that clinicians will not be confused by the finding of ascites on ultrasonographic studies of the abdomen during an acute abdominal attack in patients with HAE. In some patients ascites may accompany other manifestations of abdominal HAE.

International audience; BACKGROUND: In Madagascar, very little is known about the etiology and prevalence of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in a rural tropical area. Recent data are needed to determine the viral and atypical bacterial etiologies in children with defined clinical manifestations of ARIs. METHODS: During one year, we conducted a prospective study on ARIs in children between 2 to 59 months in the community hospital of Ampasimanjeva, located in the south-east of Madagascar. Respiratory samples were analyzed by multiplex real-time RT-PCR, including 18 viruses and 2 atypical bacteria. The various episodes of ARI were grouped into four clinical manifestations with well-documented diagnosis: "Community Acquired Pneumonia"(CAP, group I), "Other acute lower respiratory infections (Other ALRIs, group II)", "Upper respiratory tract infections with cough (URTIs with cough, group III)"and "Upper respiratory tract infections without cough (URTIs without cough, group IV)". RESULTS: 295 children were included in the study between February 2010 and February 2011. Viruses and/or atypical bacteria respiratory pathogens were detected in 74.6% of samples, the rate of co-infection was 27.3%. Human rhinovirus (HRV; 20.5%), metapneumovirus (HMPV A/B, 13.8%), coronaviruses (HCoV, 12.5%), parainfluenza virus (HPIV, 11.8%) and respiratory syncytial virus A and B (RSV A/B, 11.8%) were the most detected. HRV was predominantly single detected (23.8%) in all the clinical groups while HMPV A/B (23.9%) was mainly related to CAP (group I), HPIV (17.3%) to the "Other ALRIs" (group II), RSV A/B (19.5%) predominated in the group "URTIs with cough" (group III) and Adenovirus (HAdV, 17.8%) was mainly detected in the "without cough" (group IV). INTERPRETATION: This study describes for the first time the etiology of respiratory infections in febrile children under 5 years in a malaria rural area of Madagascar and highlights the role of respiratory viruses in a well clinically defined population of ARIs.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory viral pathogen in children worldwide. hMPV is divided into four subtypes: hMPV_A1, hMPV_A2, hMPV_B1, and hMPV_B2. hMPV_A2 can be further divided into hMPV_A2a and A2b based on phylogenetic analysis. The typical prevalence pattern of hMPV involves a shift of the predominant subtype within one or two years. However, hMPV_A2, in particular hMPV_A2b, has circulated worldwide with a several years long term high epidemic. To study this distinct epidemic behavior of hMPV_A2, we analyzed 294 sequences of partial G genes of the virus from different countries. Molecular evolutionary data indicates that hMPV_A2 evolved toward heterogeneity faster than the other subtypes. Specifically, a bayesian skyline plot analysis revealed that hMPV_A2 has undergone a generally upward fluctuation since 1997, whereas the other subtypes experienced only one upward fluctuation. Although hMPV_A2 showed a lower value of mean dN/dS than the other subtypes, it had the largest number of positive selection sites. Meanwhile, various styles of mutation were observed in the mutation hotspots of hMPV_A2b. Bayesian phylogeography analysis also revealed two fusions of diffusion routes of hMPV_A2b in India (June 2006) and Beijing, China (June 2008). Sequences of hMPV_A2b retrieved from GenBank boosted simultaneously with the two fusions respectively, indicating that fusion of genetic transmission routes from different regions improved survival of hMPV_A2. Epidemic and evolutionary dynamics of hMPV_A2b were similar to those of hMPV_A2. Overall, our findings provide important molecular insights into hMPV epidemics and viral variation, and explain the occurrence of an atypical epidemic of hMPV_A2, particularly hMPV_A2b.

The cerebral ganglia of Lineus ruber secretes a neurohormone named gonad-inhibiting hormone (GIH) controlling reproduction. As L. ruber undergoes repeated annual cycles of reproduction during its life, the way the neuroendocrine activity of the worm is seasonally regulated is an important ecophysiological question. In other words, what environmental ‘key factors’ influences the beginning of spawning season in L. ruber?

We attempted to identify the nature and origin of the pigment produced by the marine worm Nereis diversicolor in order to isolate, in inert brown capsules, foreign objects introduced into its body cavity. This brown pigment, characterized by cytochemical techniques, could be a melanin. The activity of the enzyme phenoloxidase responsible for melanin biosynthesis was detected by enzyme cytochemistry techniques in vacuoles and the Golgi apparatus of coelomocytes activated by the presence of foreign bodies. Morphological techniques combined with a monoclonal immunological probe enabled us to establish that the "G2" granulocytes contain both the precursor of the pigment in dense bodies and the capacity for phenoloxidase synthesis when activated to encapsulate foreign bodies. The "G2" granulocyte may therefore be compared to a melanocyte in which melanin is not stored as in mammals, but immediately extruded following synthesis in the form of a thick fluid.

Effects of methanol on growth and photosynthetic activity of Lemna gibba exposed under continuous illumination were examined. As a higher plant, L. gibba appeared to be much more sensitive to methanol inhibitory effect compared with some algae (Theodoridou et al. [2002] Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 1573, 189-198). We found that stimulatory or inhibitory effects were strongly dependent on the methanol concentration and the time of exposure. When the exposure was up to 0.2% methanol, the growth rate of biomass was improved by 50%. However, stimulatory effect of methanol appeared to be smaller when plants were exposed for 48 h compared with 24 h. Increase in biomass induced by methanol was not based on the increase in primary photosynthetic process but rather on accommodation of energy dissipation during photosynthesis. Inhibitory effect on the growth of L. gibba already observed for 0.5% methanol was strongly associated with the increase in the nonphotochemical energy dissipation. The ratio between biomass and methanol concentration appeared to determine the stimulatory or the inhibitory effect. Suggested explanations for the stimulatory and the inhibitory effects are presented.

On assiste a l'apparition successive des chaines enzymatiques necessaires a la biosynthese de porphyrine et de melanine. Les etudes ultrastructurale et autoradiographique a haute resolution de ces phenomenes — montrent que la melanisation s'opere au niveau “d'organites” cellulaires specialises (premelanosomes, melanosomes). La porphyrinogenese se developpe dans des vacuoles et organites d'origine golgienne qui participent egalement a la melanogenese.

en Septate junctions, invertebrate specific, are classified into three types, i.e., Hydra type, pleated sheet type, and continuous type. In this work, we are the first to describe the body wall epithelium of Lineus ruber septate junctions that belong to the pleated sheet type. These junctions agree in structural details with corresponding junctions in molluscs and arthropods. This suggests that the studied nemertine belongs to the higher groups of protostomians.

On a etudie le metabolisme des Porphyrines de la Nemerte marine Lineus ruber a l'aide d'acide delta aminolevulinique 4 C14 ou 2–3 H3. Chez les animaux traites, le marqueur est retrouve au niveau des uroporphyrines separees par chromatographie sur papier. Ce resultat nous a permis l'etude autoradiographique de la mise en place des Uroporphyrines dans les cellules pigmentaires en regeneration. Ce type de travail permet de suivre la differenciation biochimique des cellules pigmentaires avant que ne soit commencee leur differenciation morphologique.

We compared the proportional distribution of different influenza virus types within age strata using surveillance data from twenty-nine countries during 1999-2014 (N=358,796 influenza cases).METHODS:For each virus, we calculated a Relative Illness Ratio (defined as the ratio of the percentage of cases in an age group to the percentage of the country population in the same age group) for young children (0-4 years), older children (5-17 years), young adults (18-39 years), older adults (40-64 years), and the elderly (65+ years). We used random-effects meta-analysis models to obtain summary relative illness ratios (sRIRs), and conducted meta-regression and sub-group analyses to explore causes of between-estimates heterogeneity.RESULTS:The influenza virus with highest sRIR was A(H1N1) for young children, B for older children, A(H1N1)pdm2009 for adults, and (A(H3N2) for the elderly. As expected, considering the diverse nature of the national surveillance datasets included in our analysis, between-estimates heterogeneity was high (I2>90%) for most sRIRs. The variations of countries' geographic, demographic and economic characteristics and the proportion of outpatients among reported influenza cases explained only part of the heterogeneity, suggesting that multiple factors were at play.CONCLUSIONS:These results highlight the importance of presenting burden of disease estimates by age group and virus (sub)type.
