Abstract

Background: Coagulation factor IV, also known as serum ionised calcium (SIC), participates in coagulative process and tends to elevate in patients with primary lung cancer. It may be an indicator of symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) due to primary lung cancer (LC). Methods: A total of 388 patients who underwent CTPA and/or radionuclide ventilation perfusion scanning due to PE‐suspected symptoms were stratified into LCPE (lung cancer and PE) group (n = 95), PE group (n = 99), LC group (n = 98) and control group (n = 96). At admission, the level of SIC and STC (serum total calcium) was compared among four groups. At discharge, the level change of SIC and STC from admission to discharge was compared among four groups. The coefficients analysis between SIC as well as STC and the possibility of PE were performed. Results: The SIC of LCPE group was the highest among four groups at admission (P < 0.001). The level change of SIC from admission to discharge in LCPE group was the highest among four groups (P = 0.001). A ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the sensitivity and specificity of SIC for a diagnosis of PE among LC patients were 71.9% and 86.0%, respectively. The area under curve (AUC) was 0.781. Along with the increase of 0.1 mmol/L in SIC level, the risk ratio for a PE was 2.165 (1.537‐2.849) (P < 0.001). Abstract

Snow cover is of great significance for many applications. However, automatic extraction of snow cover from high spatial resolution remote sensing (HSRRS) imagery remains challenging, owing to its multiscale characteristics, similarities to clouds, and occlusion by the shadows of mountains and clouds. Deep convolutional neural networks for semantic segmentation are the most popular approach to automatic map generation, but they require huge computing time and resources, as well as a large dataset of pixel-wise annotated HSRRS images, which precludes the application of many superior models. In this study, these limitations are overcome by using a sequence of transfer learning steps. The method starts with a modified aligned 'Xception' model pre-trained for object classification on ImageNet. Subsequently, a 'DeepLab version three plus' (DeepLabv3+) model is trained using a large dataset of Landsat images and corresponding snow cover products. Finally, a second transfer learning step is employed to fine-tune the model on the small dataset of GaoFen-2, the highest resolution HSRRS satellite in China. 176. A comparison of diagnostic consistency for asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap and clinical characteristics study.

Abstract

Background: The diagnostic criteria for asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap have not been unified. Different studies have used different criteria, and this has led to diagnostic inconsistencies.Methods: We collected data of patients who were older than 40 years and hospitalised because of chronic bronchial diseases. One hundred and seventy-one patients were included in this study. We compared seven different diagnostic criteria, examined their consistency, and analysed differences among groups classified with each set.Results: The prevalence of ACO ranged between 7.02 and 27.49% depending on the criteria applied. The patients who met the Soler-Cataluna et al. criteria also met the GesEPOC criteria. Rhee has proposed the strictest diagnostic criteria; hence, the number of patients who met these criteria was the smallest, and those patients also met the diagnostic criteria proposed by the other studies. We found that applying the different sets of criteria did not lead to the selection of the same population, while there were no statistical differences in age, disease duration, allergens, and inflammatory markers.Conclusions: The diagnostic criteria of ACO have not been unified, which hinders the design and progress of clinical studies that would investigate the ACO phenotypes and underlying mechanisms. 192. Activation of Notch1 signaling alleviates dysfunction of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells induced by cigarette smoke extract

However, little is known about the impact of Notch on the proliferation, migration, and survival of MSCs in a cigarette smoke (CS) microenvironment. Here, we used CS extract to mimic the CS microenvironment in vitro, with the intention to investigate the effect of Notch in regulating proliferation, migration, and survival of BM-MSCs. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were infected with lentivirus vector containing the intracellular domain of Notch1 (N1ICD) and challenged with CS extract. Cell proliferation was detected by Ki67 staining and expression of cell cycle-related proteins. A transwell assay was used to measure cell migration and the expression of apoptotic proteins was examined. The proliferation of BM-MSCs overexpressing N1ICD significantly increased. Consistently, levels of cyclin D1, p-Rb, and E2F-1 increased in N1ICD overexpressing cells. N1ICD overexpression also increased cell migration compared with the control group. N1ICD overexpression equilibrated the expression of Bax and Bcl-2, and blocked caspase-3 cleavage, contributing to the inhibition of apoptosis. Moreover, blockade of the PI3K/Akt pathway suppressed the aforementioned cytoprotective effects of N1ICD. In conclusion, activation of Notch signaling improved proliferation, migration, and survival of BM-MSCs in a CS microenvironment partly through the PI3K/Akt pathway.
