Wine quality depends on grape quality, which is affected by many factors such as edaphic, climatic and genetic, i.e., cultivar and rootstock. Rootstocks have been selected in worldwide viticulture to confer to vines some adaptation to several types of soil conditions in vineyards, but this adaptation may affect vine physiology and consequently may affect the chemical compounds of grapes, especially their phenolic compounds. Thus, this study compares the chemical composition of grapes and wines, and the sensory profile of wines from vines of the cv. Syrah grafted on two rootstocks, 5C and Gravesac, grown under a biodynamical management system. The results showed higher skin total phenols and skin total tannins in grapes from 5C rootstock. In the resulting wines, the same results were observed. The multivariate analysis demonstrated that the 5C wines presented a higher relationship with all the families of the low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds, while the Gravesac wines showed a strong relationship with acetylated and p-coumaroylated anthocyanins. The sensory analysis showed that the 5C wines presented more color intensity, more astringency and more meaty aromas compared with the Gravesac wines. The low availability of micronutrients in the soil leads to a deficit of these micronutrients in crops, causing malnutrition in the population. Approximately 3,000 million people in the world have health problems caused by inadequate Zn intake. Agronomic biofortification is a way to produce crops rich in micronutrients and mitigate malnutrition problems. Nano biofortification with zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs-ZnO) is a good strategy to mitigate and increase the nutritional content of the edible part of the plant. The aim was to determine the effect of foliar spraying with NPs-ZnO on yield and biosynthesis of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant compounds and their bioaccumulation. In this study, the effect of foliar fertilization with NPs-ZnO: 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg L-1, on yield, the content of bioactive compounds and their bioaccumulation in grapevine berries was evaluated. The distribution of the treatments was under a completely randomized design, each treatment consisted of 10 plants, each representing one experimental unit. The treatments were applied by foliar sprays at fruit formation, in veraison and 15 days before harvest. Foliar spraying with NPs-ZnO positively modifies yield, the content of bioactive compounds, and their bioaccumulation. Doses of 50-75 mg L-1 of NPs-ZnO increased crop yield, and oenological parameters. In addition, all doses evaluated modified enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and improving Zn concentration in grapevine berries. BACKGROUND: The ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation can alter grape metabolism during berry development, but little is known on the effect of postharvest UV‐B exposure. In this study, we evaluated the effect of postharvest UV‐B exposure on berry primary and secondary metabolites in four grapevine varieties (Aleatico, Moscato bianco, Sangiovese, and Vermentino) in order to evaluate the possibility to increase the grape quality and its nutraceutical properties. RESULTS: The treatment did not significantly affect the berry primary metabolism in terms of organic acids, carbohydrates, and amino acids profile, regardless of the variety. UV‐B exposure reduced the total anthocyanin content, particularly the tri‐substituted and di‐substituted forms in Aleatico and Sangiovese, respectively. An overall negative effect of UV‐B irradiation on the flavonols profile of Aleatico, Moscato bianco, and Vermentino berries was found, whereas it enhanced the quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol concentration in Sangiovese. The free fraction of berry volatile organic compounds increased in UV‐B‐treated Aleatico and Moscato bianco berries, especially C13‐norisoprenoids and volatile phenols, as well as key monoterpenes, such as the linalool derivatives. However, higher concentrations of glycosylated monoterpenes and C13‐norisoprenoids were measured in Sangiovese and Vermentino berries treated with UV‐B. BACKGROUND: Melatonin is an endogenous free radical scavenger with antioxidant activity that preserves the commercial value of postharvest fruits and delays fruit senescence. To explore the effect of exogenous melatonin on antioxidants and aroma volatile compounds of grapes (Vitis labrusca × vinifera 'Kyoho'), the grapes were treated with distilled water (control), 50 μmol L−1 of melatonin (M50), and 100 μmol L−1 of melatonin (M100) for 30 min and were then stored at 4 °C for 25 days. RESULTS: Exogenous melatonin decreased the rachis browning index, the decay development, the weight loss rate, the berry abscission rate, and the respiration rate, promoted the accumulation of total phenolics and total flavonoids, and delayed the reduction of anthocyanins and total soluble solids. In volatile compounds, the accumulation of esters, aldehydes, and alcohols in grapes was promoted, and the terpenes content was reduced by exogenous melatonin. CONCLUSION: Exogenous melatonin had potentially positive effects on the postharvest life and quality maintenance of grapes. Since climate is a key determinant in the production and quality of grapes, the viticultural potential of a region is greatly affected by climate changes, particularly by an increase in temperature. Oltenia is one of the traditional Romanian winegrowing regions that is presently undergoing a progressive warming trend. The implication is that the region may require adaptation measures in the near future to keep its grape production and quality potential at current levels. The analysis is based on monthly values of temperature (mean, maximum, and minimum), precipitation amount, and sunshine duration from 10 meteorological stations located within the study area. The data cover the period 1961–2021. The changes in the main climatic parameters and in specific bioclimatic indices are analysed for the entire period and on two distinct sub-periods (1961–1990 and 1991–2021). The obtained results reveal an increase of the heliothermal resources in the region and a certain stability of the precipitation amounts over the last three decades. Thus, both Winkler and Huglin indices emphasize a northward shift of the area corresponding to quality red wines (about 60 km), which means also a shift in the quality white wines in areas considered without great potential so far. Trends detected in the climatic parameters and bioclimatic indices emphasize potential problems for viticulture in Oltenia, mainly in its southern and southwestern part, where climate suitability for quality wines is under pressure on the background of increasing temperature and reduced precipitation amounts during the growing season. Background: Grape composition is of high interest for producing quality wines. For that, grape analyses are necessary, and require sample preparation, whether with classical analyses or with NIR analyses. The aim of the study was to test the ability of hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a nondestructive analysis to assess their composition. For that, seven grape varieties were analyzed for two vintages. Partial least squares (PLS) and discriminate (PLS‐DA) and PLS‐R were realized respectively in order to classify the berries, to validate the data sets, and to provide models to assess grape composition after a 1st derivative data pretreatment. Results: HSI allowed a 100% good classification of the grape varieties. It showed good results to assess technological ripening parameters (sugar and acid contents) as well as phenolic content (TPI, Total Phenolics, Total Anthocyanins, Total Flavonoids, and their extractable equivalents) (globally R2 > 0.81). However, it was not possible to reach the color intensity of grapes. Conclusion: HSI led to generate good models to assess wine grape composition. Among phytosanitary problems of the grapevine, viruses stand out for their capacity of reducing the quality and yield of grapes. However, detecting and identifying viral infections in grapevines can be challenging. This study performed a high throughput sequencing (HTS) of the viral pathogens present in a vine showing virus-like symptoms to elucidate the etiology. HTS analysis reported in a hybrid grapevine with mild curling down of leaf edges, the presence of four viruses and viroids, which were probably implicated in the observed symptoms. Climate is one of the main factors conditioning the chemical composition of grapes and wine. At a vineyard scale, during the growing season, topography can explain spatial temperature variability. Furthermore, each topographical factor (altitude, slope, exposure) may have a different impact on grapevine production, even in low altitude terrains. This work aims to evaluate the mesoclimate of Uruguay's Atlantic region and determine the topography and ocean's effect on temperature and, thus on the response of the 'Tannat' grapevine. Data from 19 temperature sensors, installed in a coastal vineyard under contrasted topography conditions, were used over three growing seasons in order to study the relationships between bioclimatic indicators of different sites and the plant response of nine 'Tannat' plots under similar agronomical management and soil type. Mesoclimate, especially due to altitude and exposition to the ocean winds, mostly explained 'Tannat' variability. Significant differences in extreme temperatures (minimum and maximum) were observed: The plots at higher altitudes (118-140 m a.s.l.) exposed to oceanic winds had a lower daytime temperature than the plot sheltered at lower altitude (70-94 m a.s.l.). The average difference was 0.9 °C during the hottest summer, reaching 1,7 °C between the most contrasted sites. In particular, the local sea breeze circulation during heat waves of the ripening period, prevent extreme high temperatures in sites facing the ocean. Temperature drop of 4.3°C in upwind sites was noticed, against 0.9°C in sheltered plots. The plots at lower altitude presented a nighttime temperature lower than plots at higher altitude (up to 1.0°C lower, on average, during ripening), thus resulting in greater diurnal thermal amplitude (1.5 °C greater). A direct association between altitude, mesoscale temperature and 'Tannat' grape metabolites was observed for three consecutive years: plots at higher altitude recorded significative greater malic acid (+1.7 g L-1), while plots at lower altitude recorded greater anthocyanin potential (ApH1) (+1920 mg L-1). Other variables such as soluble solids, total titratable acidity, pH and polyphenols were differentiated at least over one growing season. No significant differences in agronomic response parameters such as yield, pruning weight and Ravaz Index were observed. Topographic differences less than 70 m a.s.l. but enhanced by the Atlantic Ocean influence, made it possible to differentiate plots with equal vine responses. Seasonal and spatial climatic characterization of the region at fine scale along with grapevine response will allow to optimize agronomic decisions especially in search of fresh terroirs where the vines can adapt to climate change. The Douro Demarcated Region (DDR) has peculiar edaphoclimatic characteristics that provide a suitable terroir for premium wine production. As climate change effects continue to emerge, ensuring productivity and quality becomes increasingly important for viticulturists, as those directly determine their profits. Cultural approaches, such as the use of biostimulants, are actively being developed to mitigate abiotic stress. The main objective of this work was to assess the effect of foliar sprays of a seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum)-based extract (ANE) and glycine betaine (GB) on grape berry quality, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activity. A trial was installed in a commercial vineyard (cv. 'Touriga Franca') in the Douro Superior (Upper Douro) sub-region of the Douro Demarcated Region. In 2020 and 2021, three foliar sprayings were performed during the growing season, namely at pea size, bunch closure, and veraison. There was a positive effect of both biostimulants (ANE and GB) on the physiological and biochemical performance of cv. 'Touriga Franca' exposed to summer stress. In general, the GB 0.2% spraying was the most promising treatment for this grape cultivar, as it increased berry quality, the concentration of bioactive compounds (total phenolics, flavonoids, and ortho-diphenols), and the antioxidant activity. Pre-harvest application of elicitors improves grape quality, specifically the phenolic compounds and color characteristics. Limited research has been conducted on the impact of elicitors on the C6 compounds found in grapes. This is due to lack of comprehensive studies examining the combined effects of bound aroma compounds, enzyme activity, and substrate availability. This study aimed to assess the impact of benzothiadiazole (BTH) on the physicochemical properties and C6 compounds of Cabernet Gernischt grapes during ripening. Compared with the control group (CK), BTH treatment significantly increased the 100-berry weight, skin/berry ratio, pH, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content in ripe grapes. Additionally, BTH treatment led to significant reductions in reducing sugar, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and free C6 aldehydes. Furthermore, BTH treatment significantly decreased the contents of free C6 alcohols and increased the levels of free and bound C6 esters. BTH treatment also increased the activities of lipoxygenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and alcohol acetyltransferase enzymes, while it decreased the activity of hydroperoxide lyase enzyme. The application of BTH resulted in changes to the physicochemical properties and levels of C6 compounds in Cabernet Gernischt grapes by up-regulating enzyme activity and down-regulating precursors. Leaf removal is a cultural practice mainly aimed at improving cluster zone microclimates and impacting primary and secondary metabolites, such as volatiles. This research aimed to assess the impact of defoliation on free and glycosylated aromas of a neutral ('Nebbiolo') and a semi-aromatic ('Aleatico') red variety. Defoliation was performed at fruit set (BBCH 71) and, for 'Nebbiolo', also at berries touch (BBCH 81) phenological stages. Skins and pulps were separately analyzed by Solid Phase Extraction–Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. Results showed that the response to defoliation was variety-dependent. For 'Nebbiolo', especially when performed at the berries' touch stage, defoliation had a significant effect on the accumulation of free volatiles and glycosidic precursors. Differently, free and bound 'Aleatico' volatiles were less impacted by defoliation. Interestingly, in both grapevine varieties, defoliation significantly enhanced the accumulation of aroma precursors in grapes' skins, which is of particular relevance for red wine production and their aging potential. In northwest China, where winter is extremely cold and the grapevine is vulnerable to freezing damage, the application of soil covering has promoted the vigorous development of the local grape and wine industries. However, in recent years, the negative effects of burying soil for cold protection on the environment have gradually emerged. In some viticultural regions, the phenomenon of "summer forest, winter desert" has appeared. Therefore, it is urgent for the Chinese grape industry to find a better solution to overwinter safely and environmentally friendly. This review summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of widely used solutions to overwinter such as covering vines with soil, breeding of cold-resistant grapes, cold-resistant cultivation model, physical and chemical covering materials, and protected grape facilities were reviewed. Future overwintering measures were proposed which avoid burial and grape overwintering research directions. Table grapes are harvested based on well-known maturity indices that must be monitored after fruit veraison. The aim of this study was to assess these indices across multiple locations and environmental conditions, encompassing different table grape cultivars such as Black Pearl, Crimson Seedless, Superior Seedless, and Red Globe. For this reason, grape sampling was conducted across six distinct locations characterized by varying altitudes above sea level (m asl) and environmental conditions over the ripening season. The main maturity indices, including pH, sugar content, titratable acidity, berry firmness, and other parameters were monitored over the growing season. Moreover, the quantification of total polyphenols, total anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity was determined using spectrophotometric assays at harvesting. The study has examined the effect of the vineyard's location on grape quality and its interaction with the cultivar and environment. Crimson Seedless maintained a relatively high level of acidity with altitude near harvesting. Black Pearl exhibited a notable decline in both sugar content and berry firmness as elevation increased, whereas Red Globe demonstrated contrasting outcomes. The optimal maturity of Superior Seedless was observed at an elevation of 1000 m asl. Black Pearl and Crimson Seedless exhibited better adaptability to intermediate elevations (650 and 950 m asl), while Red Globe and Superior Seedless showed better adaptability to higher elevations (1000–1150 m asl). Among the studied cultivars, Black Pearl exhibited significantly higher levels of total polyphenols and anthocyanins, while close values were noticed between red and green cultivars. The use of microbial biostimulants in agriculture is recognized as a sustainable approach to promoting crop productivity and quality due to improved nutrient uptake, enhanced stress tolerance, and improved ability to cope with nonoptimal environments. The present paper aimed to comparatively investigate the effect of seven different commercial mycorrhizal-based treatments in terms of yield, phytochemical components, and technological traits of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grape (Vitis vinifera L.) plants. Metabolomic analysis and photosynthetic performance were first investigated in leaves to point out biochemical differences related to plant growth. Higher photosynthetic efficiency and better PSII functioning were found in biostimulant-treated vines, reflecting an overall decrease in photoinhibition compared to untreated plants. Untargeted metabolomics followed by multivariate statistics highlighted a robust reprogramming of primary (lipids) and secondary (alkaloids and terpenoids) metabolites in treated plants. The analysis of berry yield and chemical components exhibited significant differences depending on the biostimulant product. Generally, berries obtained from treated plants displayed improved contents of polyphenols and sugars, while yield remained unchanged. The Thompson Seedless (Sultanina) seedless variety of grapes is an important crop in Egypt, both for local consumption and export. In recent years, the H4 strain of this grape variety has gained popularity due to its high productivity. However, a drawback of this strain is that the grape clusters become densely packed, resulting in small berries and reduced overall quality. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of pruning severity and bud load on the growth, yield, and quality of H4 grapes. The study included several different treatments, namely T1 Control: (10 canes × 12 buds), T2: (8 canes × 6 buds), T3: (8 canes × 8 buds), T4: (8 canes × 10 buds), T5: (8 canes × 12 buds), T6: (6 canes × 13 buds), T7: (8 canes × 13 buds), T8: (10 canes × 13 buds), and T9: (12 canes × 13 buds). The behavior of the buds, vegetative growth, yield, and quality of the grapes were analyzed. The results showed that pruning of the H4 strain with either 8 canes and 10–12 buds per cane, or 6 canes with 13 buds, produced the best results in terms of managing excessive fruit production, achieving a balance between vegetative growth and yield, and improving the physical and chemical characteristics of the grape clusters and berries. Overall, maintaining 8 canes with 10–12 buds per cane or 6 canes with 13 buds is recommended for obtaining maximum crop yield and quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vineyards are agroecosystems of great importance in the Niagara Region, Ontario (Canada). Due to its microclimate, this region is projected to be impacted by climate change with temperature increases, changes in precipitation patterns in all seasons, and greater frequency of extreme weather events. The aim of this review paper is to summarize which seasonal changes are expected to occur in the Niagara Region and assess how such changes are likely to affect the main components of the vineyard ecosystem (i.e., soil, vines, invertebrates, and pathogens). It is expected that by 2080 the region will experience an increase in temperature in all four seasons; an increase in precipitation during the fall, winter, and spring; and a decrease in precipitation during summer months. Impacts of the projected changes will likely lead to vine water stress, yield loss, increases in incidents of diseases, increases in the spread of new pests, and changes in grape quality ultimately resulting in lower wine quality and/or production. Current management practices will need to be better understood and adaptive strategies introduced to enhance grape growers' ability to minimize these impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of bunch normalization and defoliation on winter eye fertility, quantity and yield quality in Cabernet Franc. It was found that the application of green pruning resulted in an increase in mass per bunch and per 100 grains, but a decrease in yield per vine. The sugar content increased slightly in the green pruned variants. In the two-year period of the study, high temperatures and low rainfall during the growing season reduced the effect of bunch rationing and defoliation on grape yield and quality. There was no significant difference in grape quality between the treatments under high temperatures. After the hot and dry year of 2021, lower values of the actual fertility indicators - percentage of fruiting shoots and fertility coefficient - were observed in 2022. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red wine grapes have an important impact on the economy of many regions, both for wine quality and for their richness in phenolic compounds, which have many health benefits. Climate has been changing substantially in the last years, which affects greatly grape polyphenolic composition and wine quality. In this review, we will unveil the importance of climate in grape development, both physically and chemically, the different methodologies used to evaluate grape quality, the interesting new approaches using NIR spectroscopy, and the functional properties of grapes and red wine, due to their high phenolic content. Climate has an impact in the development of phenolic compounds in grapes, namely in the anthocyanins biosynthesis. The phenolic chemical composition changes during maturation, therefore, it is essential to keep on track the accumulation of these key compounds. This information is crucial to help producers choose the best harvest date since specific compounds like polyphenols are responsible for the color, taste, and mouthfeel of wines, which directly affects wine quality. The usage of different methodologies to assess quality parameters in grapes and wine, can be used to provide essential information to create the chemical profile of each variety to develop calibration methods. NIR spectroscopy seems to be a reliable method to be used in vineyards during grape maturation to provide real time information on quality parameters to producers since many reliable calibration models have been developed over time. Phenolic compounds are plant secondary metabolites with strong antioxidant potential. They are involved in stress tolerance, plant defense mechanism, and protection against environmental factors. Due to their medicinal and antioxidant properties, they have been part of the human diet for centuries. They also affect the overall quality of the grapes for commercial use. Fruit color is one quality attribute that is directly influenced by the production of anthocyanins in the berry skin. The production of anthocyanins is, however, linked with the production of abscisic acid. This review is focused on the production of different phenolic compounds in grapes, the role of abscisic acid in the production of anthocyanin contents through the phenylpropanoid pathway, and its effect on color development and final quality. Grapevine water status strongly impacts vine yield and berry quality, hence the importance of a cost- and time-effective methodology to estimate it in commercial vineyards. A two-year experiment was carried out in a rainfed commercial vineyard (cv. 'Vermentino' grafted on '1103P') to test the ability of vegetation indices (VIs) derived from Sentinel-2 (S2) multispectral imagery in estimating the stem water potential (Ψstem). The S2 VIs calculated including NIR and SWIR bands (NDMI, MSI and NMSI), performed better (R² values of 0.66, 0.66 and 0.59, respectively) than those calculated using the bands in the VIS-NIR region (R² values 0.47, 0.58 and 0.58 for NDVI, GNDVI and NDWI, respectively). The slope between B8a and B11 bands was also significantly affected by grapevine water status. The different weather conditions occurred during the two experimental years also allowed to observe as the S2 VIs performed better in estimating Ψstem under prolonged drought conditions. Sustainability in grapevine cultivation requires the precise use of water and fertilizers, particularly nitrogen (N), to produce grapes of the highest quality for winemaking, while simultaneously avoiding harm to the surrounding waters and atmosphere by reducing NO3− losses and N2O and NH3 emissions from the vineyards. To address the challenge of optimizing N use in viticulture, many N fertilization trials have been carried out over the last decades, and a compilation and analysis of worldwide trials was therefore needed. The present study tackled this challenge through a meta-analysis of published research, which included 374 fertilization trials. From the compiled data, six vine production parameters and eight grape quality traits were extracted and normalized to enable comparisons between experiments. The Mitscherlich law of diminishing returns was able to satisfactorily describe the set of vine production parameters against nitrogen application rate, and the same occurred with the yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN). In vines, both reproductive and vegetative growth similarly responded to the N application rate. In general, the nitrogen requirements for 95% of the maximum grape yield amounted to rates between 30 and 40 kg·N·ha−1, which increased nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) to values between 0.27 and 0.36 t·kg·N−1. Although several grape quality traits could not be described against the N rate in terms of any mathematical relationship, an N rate between 20 and 25 kg·N·ha−1 could be considered as maximizing grape quality for winemaking. Such N fertilization range increases NUE up to values between 0.41 and 0.47 t·kg·N−1, thus almost doubling the known NUE standards when grape quality is targeted instead of yield, although soil fertility could be exhausted in the mid-to-long term. Whatever the case, anthocyanins and polyphenols are well preserved in red grapes at such low N rates, although YAN is not. Microbes are an important part of the vineyard ecosystem, which significantly influence the quality of grapes. Previously, we identified a bud mutant variety (named 'Fengzao') from 'Kyoho' grapes. The variation of microbial communities in grape and its bud mutant variety has not been studied yet. So, in this study, with the samples of both 'Fengzao' and 'Kyoho', we conducted high-throughput microbiome sequencing and investigated their microbial communities in different tissues. Obvious differences were observed in the microbial communities between 'Fengzao' and 'Kyoho'. The fruit and the stem are the tissues with relatively higher abundance of microbes, while the leaves contained less microbes. The fruit and the stem of 'Kyoho' and the stem of 'Fengzao' had relatively higher species diversity based on the alpha diversity analysis. Proteobacteria, Enterobacteriaceae and Rhodobacteraceae had significantly high abundance in 'Fengzao'. Firmicutes and Pseudomonas were highly abundant in the stems of 'Kyoho', and family of Spirochaetaceae, Anaplasmataceae, Chlorobiaceae, and Sphingomonadaceae, and genera of Spirochaeta, Sphingomonas, Chlorobaculum and Wolbachia were abundant in the fruits of 'Kyoho'. These identified microbes are main components of the microbial communities, and could be important regulators of grapevine growth and development. This study revealed the differences in the microbial compositions between 'Kyoho' and its bud mutant, and these identified microbes will be significant resources for the future researches on the quality regulation and disease control of grapevines. Current climatic conditions may cause significant changes in grapevine phenology and maturity dynamics linked often with changes to ecoclimatic indicators. The influence exerted by different meteorological conditions during four consecutive years on the aromatic potential of Grignolino grapes was investigated for the first time. The samples were collected from three vineyards characterized by different microclimatic conditions mainly related to the vineyard exposure and by a different age of the plants. Important differences as far as temperature and rainfall patterns are concerned during ripening were observed among the 4 years. Grape responses to abiotic stress, with particular emphasis on aromatic precursors, were evaluated using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The results highlighted significant differences among the vintages for each vineyard in terms of the berry weight and the aromatic precursor concentration. For the grapes of the younger-vine vineyard, the content of aroma compounds showed a different variability among the vintages if compared to the old-vine vineyards. Optimal conditions in terms of temperature and rainfall during the green phase followed by a warm and dry post-veraison period until harvest favored all classes of compounds especially terpenoids mainly in the grapes of the old vines. High-temperature (>30°C) and low-rainfall pattern before veraison led to high benzenoid contents and increased differences among vineyards such as berry weight, whereas cooler conditions favored the terpenoid levels in grapes from southeast-oriented vineyards. In a hilly environment, lack of rainfall and high temperature that lately characterize the second part of berry development seem to favor the grape quality of Grignolino, a cultivar of medium-late ripening, by limiting the differences on bunch ripening, allowing a greater accumulation of secondary metabolites but maintaining at the same time an optimum balance sugar/acidity. Vegetation indices (VI), especially the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), are used to determine management units (MU) and to explain quantity and quality of vineyard production. How do NDVI maps from different sensing technologies differ in a production context? What part of the variability of yield and quality can they explain? This study compares high-resolution multispectral, multi-temporal data from CropCircle, SpectroSense + GPS, Parrot Sequoia + multispectral camera equipped UAV, and Sentinel-2 imagery over two seasons (2019 and 2020). The objective was to assess whether the date of data collection (phenological growth stage) influences the correlations between NDVI and crop production. The comparison of vineyard NDVI data from proximal and remote sensing in both a statistical and a productive context showed strong similarities between NDVI values from similar sensors (0.69 < r < 0.96), but divergences between proximal and airborne/spaceborne observations. Exploratory correlation analysis between NDVI layers and grape yield and total soluble solids data (TSS) showed high correlations (maximum |r|= 0.91 and |r|= 0.74, respectively), with correlations increasing as the season progressed. No relationship with must titratable acidity or pH was found. Finally, proximal sensors explained better the variability in yield and quality for grapes in the early and late growth stages. The UAV's MUs described the yield of both years better than the other sensors. In 2019, the PCA-based MUs explained the TSS variability better than the UAV-related zones. Grapes are a globally popular fruit, with grape cultivation worldwide being second only to citrus. This article focuses on the low efficiency and accuracy of traditional manual grading of red grape external appearance and proposes a small-sample red grape external appearance grading model based on transfer learning with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In the naturally growing vineyards, 195,120,135 samples of Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III red grapes were collected using a Canon EOS 550D camera, and a data set of 1800 samples was obtained using data enhancement technology. Then, the CNN transfer learning method was used to transfer the pre-trained AlexNet, VGG16, GoogleNet, InceptionV3, and ResNet50 network models on the ImageNet image dataset to the red grape image grading task. By comparing the classification performance of the CNN models of these five different network depths with fine-tuning, ResNet50 with a learning rate of 0.001 and a loop number of 10 was determined to be the best feature extractor for red grape images. Moreover, given the small number of red grape image samples in this study, different convolutional layer features output by the ResNet50 feature extractor were analyzed layer by layer to determine the effect of deep features extracted by each convolutional layer on Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification performance. This analysis helped to obtain a ResNet50 + SVM red grape external appearance grading model based on the optimal ResNet50 feature extraction strategy. Experimental data showed that the classification model constructed using the feature parameters extracted from the 10th node of the ResNet50 network achieved an accuracy rate of 95.08% for red grape grading. These research results provide a reference for the online grading of red grape clusters based on external appearance quality and have certain guiding significance for the quality and efficiency of grape industry circulation and production. Grape maturity estimation is vital in precise agriculture as it enables informed decision making for disease control, harvest timing, grape quality, and quantity assurance. Despite its importance, there are few large publicly available datasets that can be used to train accurate and robust grape segmentation and maturity estimation algorithms. To this end, this work proposes the CERTH grape dataset, a new sizeable dataset that is designed explicitly for evaluating deep learning algorithms in grape segmentation and maturity estimation. The proposed dataset is one of the largest currently available grape datasets in the literature, consisting of around 2500 images and almost 10 k grape bunches, annotated with masks and maturity levels. The images in the dataset were captured under various illumination conditions and viewing angles and with significant occlusions between grape bunches and leaves, making it a valuable resource for the research community. Thorough experiments were conducted using a plethora of general object detection methods to provide a baseline for the future development of accurate and robust grape segmentation and maturity estimation algorithms that can significantly advance research in the field of viticulture. BACKGROUND: Grape aromas are formed by a great number of volatile compounds. Methyl jasmonate (MeJ) and urea (Ur) foliar applications have been studied to improve grape quality, but their combined application has never been studied. RESULTS: In both seasons, MeJ application enhanced terpenoids and C6 compounds synthesis, though decreased alcohols content. Moreover, MeJ + Ur treatment reduced benzenoids and alcohols and did not affect C13‐norisoprenoids content. However, there was no clear effect of these treatments on the rest of the volatile compounds. Multifactorial analysis showed a season effect on all volatile compounds, except terpenoids. Discriminant analysis showed a good separation among samples under treatment criterion. The great effect of MeJ treatment on terpenoids was probably due to this elicitor influencing their biosynthesis. CONCLUSION: Season has a strong influence on grapes aromatic composition since it affects all volatile compound families except terpenoids. MeJ foliar application enhanced terpenoids, C13‐norisoprenoids and C6 compounds synthesis, whereas decreased alcohols content; however, MeJ + Ur foliar treatment did not affect C13‐norisoprenoids and C6 compounds, and decreased benzenoids and alcohols grape compounds. Therefore, no synergistic effect was observed between Ur and MeJ on grape volatile compounds biosynthesis. Grapevine nutrition has been a major focus for increasing grapes quality, productivity, and the way of minimizing the gap between actual and potential grape yield. Several nutrient elements are reported to influence grapevine physiological growth, yield, and grape quality. Being a perennial crop, the vines are fertilized with organic fertilizers to ensure a supply of organic carbon, improved soil organic matter content, and enhanced soil microorganisms. Globally, fertilizers with different NPK ratios and micronutrients are used to achieve a better yield and desirable quality of grapes. The deficiency of mineral nutrients results in chlorosis and eventual necrosis of leaves, which affect vine growth, yield, and grape quality in terms of sugar and polyphenols contents, consequently compromising wine quality and other grape-derived products. Thus, the establishment of the vineyard fertilizer program should be nutrient-specific, which takes into account vineyard management strategies that influence nutrient use efficiency from fallen leaves, pruning, soil testing, plant analysis, and other factors that affect yield and quality. However, applying mineral nutrients to grapevines may interfere with the physicochemical composition of grapes and derived products. Therefore, it is important to increase productivity, improve grape quality and ensure sustainable production through an integrated approach of using organic and inorganic fertilizers. The Bohai Bay region is a famous wine-growing area in China, where the rainfall is concentrated in the summer due to the influence of the temperate semi-humid monsoon climate. As such, the vineyard terrain has a significant impact on the flavor quality of the grapes and the resulting wines. To explore the relationship between the 'Cabernet Sauvignon' wine style and terrain, this study takes four different plots in the Jieshi Mountain region to investigate the differences in the aroma profile of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and wines of two consecutive vintages. Based on two-way ANOVA, there were 25 free and 8 glycosylated aroma compounds in the grapes and 21 and 10 aroma compounds with an odor activity value greater than 0.1 in the wines at the end of alcohol fermentation (AF) and malolactic fermentation (MLF), respectively, that varied among the four plots. Wines from the four plots showed a significant difference in floral and fruity aroma attributes, which were mainly related to esters with high odor activity values. The difference in concentration of these compounds between plots was more pronounced in 2021 than in 2020, and a similar result was shown on the Shannon–Wiener index, which represents wine aroma diversity. It has been suggested that high rainfall makes the plot effect more pronounced. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that concentrations of (E)-3-hexen-1-ol in grapes and ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, ethyl hexanoate, isoamyl acetate, isopentanoic acid, and phenethyl acetate in wines were strongly positively correlated with the concentrations of N, P, K, Fe, and electrical conductivity in soil but negatively correlated with soil pH. Accurate, timely assessment of the vineyard on a field scale is essential for successful grape yield and quality. Remote sensing can be an effective and useful monitoring tool, as data from sensors on board Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) can measure vegetative and reproductive growth and thus directly or indirectly detect variability. Through the images obtained from UAV, the Vegetation Indices (VIs) can be calculated and compared with various agronomic characteristics of the vineyard. The objective of this study was to evaluate the multispectral response of the vineyard in three specific phenological phases and to analyse the spatial distribution of vegetative vigour. A multirotor UAV equipped with a camera featuring multispectral sensors was used. Four VIs namely Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalised Difference Red Edge (NDRE), Green Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI), were calculated using the georeferenced orthomosaic UAV images. Computer vision techniques were used to segment these orthoimages to extract only the vegetation canopy pixels. High level of agronomic variability within the vineyard was identified. Pearson's coefficient showed a significant correlation between NDVI and NDRE indices and yield since early phenological stages (r = 0.80 and 0.72 respectively), GNDVI at grape ripening (r = 0.83). Shoot pruning weight (SPW) shows the highest values of correlation (r = 0.84) with NDVI during the phenological stage of berries pea size. Simple linear regression techniques were evaluated using VIs as predictors of the SPW, and accurate predictive results were obtained for NDVI and NDRE with RMSE values of 0.18 and 0.24, respectively. Geostatistical analysis was applied to model the spatial variability of SPW, and thus vineyard vigour. Leaf removal (LR) treatments improve the photosynthetic capacity of the remaining leaves and induce flavonoid synthesis as a stress response in the common grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.). However, excessive exposure of grape berries to UV‐B radiation as a result of cultural practices in the Mediterranean climate may have negative effects on berry composition. This 2‐year study determined the effects of defoliation on the autochthonous red grape variety 'Babica' in a Mediterranean climate (wine‐growing region Dalmatia, Croatia). Six leaves were removed before flowering (FLR) and at the end of véraison (the onset of grape ripening; VerLR) and were compared to the untreated control. Yield parameters, sugar content, grape must pH, total polyphenols (TP), total anthocyanin (TA) content, and individual anthocyanin compounds were measured in grape skin extracts and wines. However, the greater mean daily temperature during the vegetation period and lesser rainfall before harvest in 2018 increased yield per vine, average cluster weights, density, and total acidity, compared to 2017. Both defoliation treatments significantly reduced TP in grape extracts, but these differences were not observed in wine. Compared to the control (NLR), VerLR treatment significantly reduced TA in grape skin extracts and wine. Significantly lesser TP concentrations, in grape skin extracts and wine, as well as TA were noticed during the 2017 season. VerLR treatment reduced the concentration of nine individual anthocyanins compared to the control in grape skin extracts, while this effect was not observed in wine. Season year was a statistically significant source of variability of the individual anthocyanin contents in wine. A number of publications deal with the influence of global warming on the chemical composition and sensory properties of grapes and wines. High-temperature values shorten the time needed for grape harvesting. All parts of the berries cannot reach full ripeness and the sugar concentration in the grapes increases. The acidity of the grapes often decreases, which is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pH. All this leads to harvesting the grapes before the berries have reached their full technological maturity, which refers mainly to the skin and the seeds. The insufficient ripeness of the grapes affects the chemical composition and the quality of the wine. The wine does not have the required color intensity. With a long maceration, there is a risk of increased extraction of bitter tannins. In this situation, oenologists must apply the technological procedure used in conditions of incompletely ripened grapes, or wait for the grapes to fully ripen and then apply technological procedures to reduce alcohol content and pH. Elevated temperatures during berry ripening are detrimental to grape quality. The crop forcing technique (summer pruning that 'forces' the vine to start a new cycle) increases must acidity and malic acid concentration at harvest by delaying the date of veraison. However, little information is available on the sensitivity to water stress of forced vines. A 3-year trial was conducted to test three irrigation strategies in forced vines: a minimum threshold of mid-day stem water potential (Ψs) of −0.75 MPa before forcing (DI), a minimum Ψs threshold of −1.2 MPa only after veraison (RDI), and the combination of both treatments (DI + RDI). Results were compared to a non-forced treatment with a minimum Ψs threshold of −1.2 MPa after veraison (C-RDI). Must acidity increased, and pH decreased in the forced treatments. However, yield was reduced by 35% and irrigation requirements increased by 20% when comparing forced and unforced treatments. As a result, water use efficiency was reduced in forced treatments. Only after a dry spring did the, DI (11%) and DI + RDI (30%) treatments, save water compared to the C-RDI treatment. Moreover, although Ψs before forcing never fell below −0.75 MPa, a significant negative correlation (R2 = 0.76) was found between the integral of water stress before the vines were forced and the number of forced bunches per vine. Post-veraison water stress in forced vines reduced the polyphenol content of the wine. Our findings suggest that forced vines are extremely sensitive to even mild water stress. In recent decades, worldwide wine-growing regions have been affected by increasingly more frequent effects of climate change, such as long period of droughts during the growing season, summer heat waves, and late spring frost events, thus causing concern for the grape quality and production. In this context, it is necessary to develop innovative agronomic practices to counter the various negative effects from those extreme weather events, by equipping the vineyards with effective and reliable multifunctional systems, which are also economically sustainable. Particularly, a multifunctional irrigation system can be used to reduce the risk of extreme weather events and, at the same time, to improve quality and quantity of grape production, reducing their inter-annual variability as well, by providing an optimized plant water nutrition. In a vineyard situated south of Lake Garda (Northern Italy), a multifunctional irrigation system equipped with drippers and mini-sprinklers (the latter to protect from both late spring frost and summer high-temperature event) was assessed. The results obtained for the growing season 2020–21 showed that the optimized drip irrigation reduced water consumption without affecting the grape yield, both in quantity and quality. The frost protection operated by mini-sprinklers increased the air temperature at bud's level of about 1 °C, suggesting a positive effect on plant production. Finally, in 2020, must quality was positively affected by summer sprinkler irrigation, increasing the levels of malic acid and titratable acidity of over 0.7 g L−1 while lowered total soluble solids. A variation in the climatic parameters of an orographic vineyard influences the growth and development of vines and grapes. Understanding the effects of this is highly beneficial in determining how viticulture practices can be modified to enhance grape quality. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of in-row grape position, altitude and vigour on berry morphology and grape maturity. The effects of vigour, altitude and in-row grape position on berry weight and diameter, titratable acidity, pH and sugar concentration of Carignan and Grenache noir grapes grown in a vineyard located in Priorat were investigated in the 2021 vintage. The results show that Carignan grapes with a lower vigour demonstrated a higher sugar concentration, berry weight and diameter, as well as lower titratable acidity, while the Grenache noir grapes with a lower vigour achieved only a higher sugar concentration. The grapes at high altitude had a higher sugar concentration in Carignan and higher titratable acidity in Grenache noir. Outer-row grapes of Carignan were characterised by lower titratable acidity and a higher sugar concentration, berry weight and diameter, while the outer-row grapes of Grenache noir displayed lower berry diameter, and a higher pH and sugar concentration. Vigour and in-row grape position have stronger effects on berry morphology and chemical composition than altitude. Crossbreeding programs allow the selection of new genotypes with better agronomic and oenological properties for the production of quality wine, and allow the development of a more sustainable form of viticulture. This paper describes the white genotype 'Calblanque', and the red genotypes 'Calnegre', 'Gebas' and 'Myrtia', the first wine grape varieties registered by the Instituto Murciano de Investigación y Desarollo Agrario y Medioambiental (IMIDA) as commercial varieties after confirming the winemaking quality of their grapes in a semi-arid climate with high temperatures. These new varieties have recently been authorized for winemaking in the Region of Murcia. 'Calblanque', 'Calnegre' and 'Gebas' were obtained from crosses between 'Monastrell' and 'Cabernet Sauvignon', and 'Myrtia' from crosses between 'Monastrell' and 'Syrah'. The red genotypes were selected for their phenolic quality—which was very superior to that of the parentals—and for their different harvest dates that allow a staggered harvest and their cultivation in different areas. 'Calblanque' was selected for its good balance of acidity and aromatic profile. The improvement of grape varieties is inevitable in increasing the yield of grapes and the quality of wine. A wide range of clones within each grape variety are currently highlighted. The purpose of our research is to study the behavior of different clones of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety in the Mereni wine-growing area, the Codru wine-growing region of the Republic of Moldova. The Mereni wine-growing area includes the localities of the Anenii Noi district (approx. 30 km SE from the Chisinau city), it is characterized by uneven, warm winters and dry summers with low precipitation. The goal of the field trial was to evaluate the agronomic performance of 21 (10 red and 11 white) winegrape varieties obtained from recent breeding programmes for disease resistance developed in Hungary, Germany, and Italy. The tested red varieties were as follows: ‘Cabernet Carbon’, ‘Cabernet Eidos’, ‘Cabernet Volos’, ‘Julius’, ‘Merlot Khorus’, ‘Merlot Kanthus’, ‘Monarch’, ‘Prior’, UD. 31.103, ‘Vinera’. The tested white varieties were as follows: ‘Aromera’, ‘Bronner’, ‘Fleurtai’, ‘Johanniter’, ‘Muscaris’, ‘Souvignier Gris’, ‘Sauvignon Kretos’, ‘Sauvignon Nepis’, ‘Sauvignon Rytos’, ‘Solaris’, ‘Soreli’. ‘Merlot’ (red) and ‘Glera’ (white) were included as control. The experimental vineyard was established in Castelfranco Veneto on the plain, in 2014. Spray treatments were applied against downy and powdery mildew, by using only copper and sulphur. Grape production, grape quality, and phenology were recorded over a six-year-period, while disease resistance (downy mildew, powdery mildew, black rot and anthracnose) was detected only during a few years. The most significant findings were: a) all varieties showed a good level of downy mildew resistance, especially ‘Cabernet Carbon’, ‘Monarch’, ‘Prior’, UD 31.103, ‘Muscaris’, ‘Solaris’, ‘Souvignier Gris’, ‘Bronner’, ‘Fleurtai’, ‘Aromera’; b) no powdery mildew attacks were detected in any variety; c) ‘Monarch’, ‘Muscaris’, ‘Solaris’ and ‘Souvignier Gris’ also showed a high level of resistance towards black rot and anthracnose; d) red grape varieties had an earlier bud burst as compared to ‘Merlot’, and, concerning ripening, some varieties were earlier than ‘Merlot’, other ones were later; e) white varieties had a later bud burst but an earlier ripening time as compared to ‘Glera’; f) grape production and quality changed significantly depending on the varieties, being titratable acidity higher than 6.4 g L-1 tartaric acid and pH lower than 3.5; also the year affected in a significant way those parameters as well as the interaction between the genotype and the year. Weight loss associated with fruit texture during storage has received numerous reports; however, no research has been conducted on the mathematical relationships between weight loss and textural traits of table grapes stored at cold and ambient temperatures. In this study, it was found that the weight loss of 'Red Globe' was in the range of 0 to 0.0487, 0 to 0.0284 and 0 to 0.0199 compared to 0 to 0.0661, 0 to 0.0301 and 0 to 0.028 of 'Wink' at 13 °C, 3 °C, and 0 °C of storage for 13 days. Stored for 13 days at 13 °C, 3 °C, and 0 °C, the range of the textural traits of failure force, strain and penetration work in 'Red Globe' were 6.274 to 3.765, 6.441 to 3.867, 6.321 to 4.014; 51.931 to 11.114, 51.876 to 13.002, 51.576 to 20.892; 21.524 to 13.225, 21.432 to 14.234, 21.321 to 15.198 in contrast to in 'Wink' of 4.4202 to 2.2292, 4.4197 to 2.653, 4.4371 to 2.8199 and 15.674 to 2.7881, 15.776 to 4.1431, 15.704 to 5.702 and 12.922 to 7.754, 12.909 to 8.021, 12.915 to 8.407. Meanwhile, the weight loss and textural traits of two table grapes were examined using time-dependent and weight loss-dependent modeling at 13 °C, 3 °C, and 0 °C of storage. The Logistic, ExpDec1, and ExpDec2 models, as well as the Boltzmann model, were identified as the best fit for the obtained data. The equations proved to be more effective in characterizing the change in weight loss and texture of 'Red Globe' and 'Wink,' with the best equations suited to the weight loss and textural parameters having an average mean standard error of 2.89%. The viability of the established models was evaluated, and parametric confidence intervals of the equations were proposed to fit different grape cultivars. According to the findings, the weight loss and texture of the two grape cultivars could be accurately predicted by the established models; additionally, the results showed that cold storage is better for the quality of table grapes and that weight loss can predict the textural quality of table grapes. This study provides a theoretical framework for optimum storage temperature together with a significantly convenient and quick approach to measure the texture of grapes for fruit dealers and enterprises. Operations planning is an important step in any activity as it aligns resources to achieve economic production value. In agriculture operations where uncertainty is present, planners must deal with biological and environmental factors, among others, which add variability and complexity to the production planning process. In this work, we consider operations planning to harvest grapes for wine production where uncertainty in weather conditions will affect the quality of grapes and, consequently, the economic value of the product. In this setting, planners make decisions on labor allocation and harvesting schedules, considering uncertainty of future rain. Weather uncertainty is modeled following a Markov Chain approach, in which rain affects the quality of grapes and labor productivity. We compare an expected value with a multi‐stage stochastic optimization approach using standard metrics such as Value of Stochastic Solution and Expected Value of Perfect Information. We analyze the impact of grape quality over time, if they are not harvested on the optimal ripeness day, and also consider differences in ability between workers, which accounts for the impact of rain in their productivity. Results are presented for a small grape harvest instance and we compare the performance of both models under different scenarios of uncertainty, manpower ability, and product qualities. Results indicate that the multi‐stage approach produces better results than the expected value approach, especially under high uncertainty and high grape quality scenarios. Xinjiang is the largest grape-producing region in China and the main grape cultivation area in the world. The Eurasian grape resources grown in Xinjiang are very rich in diversity. The sugar composition and content are the main factors that determine the quality of berries. However, there are currently no systematic reports on the types and contents of sugars in grapes grown in Xinjiang region. In this research, we evaluated the appearance and fruit maturity indicators of 18 grape varieties during fruit ripening and determined their sugar content using GC-MS. All cultivars primarily contained glucose, D-fructose, and sucrose. The glucose content in varieties varied from 42.13% to 46.80% of the total sugar, whereas the fructose and sucrose contents varied from 42.68% to 50.95% and 6.17% to 12.69%, respectively. The content of trace sugar identified in grape varieties varied from 0.6 to 2.3 mg/g. The comprehensive assessment by principal component analysis revealed strong positive correlations between some sugar components. A comprehensive study on the content and types of sugar will provide the foundation to determine the quality of grape cultivars and effective ways to utilize resources to improve sugar content through breeding. Foliar nutrient sprays are broadly used in commercial agriculture. To date, the application of Ca and Si has been little explored in vineyard production but may lead to positive responses at various levels. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of supplying single or combined calcium (Ca, 120 mM) and silicon (Si, 120 mM) sprays in Tempranillo grape composition. Foliar treatment with Ca + Si foliar enhanced all families of aromatic compounds, whereas single Ca and Si sprays induced lower effects. Regarding phenolic compounds, all foliar treatments led to minor effects. However, all three foliar Ca and Si treatments increased the total grape amino acid content. Consequently, the application of combined Ca and Si sprays to a vineyard is recommended as a tool for improving grape quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
