Fernandez, P.N.J.; Fernandez, E.G.B.; Cadondon, J.G., and Subade, R.F., 2024. Enhancing coastal management through the design and development of an in situ water quality monitoring system. Journal of Coastal Research, 40(6), 1090–1102. Charlotte (North Carolina), ISSN 0749-0208. The Philippines, with its extensive coastline rich in water resources, faces challenges because of the heavy reliance of residents on coastal waters for recreation and livelihood. This leads to water quality deterioration. Balancing human development with environmental protection necessitates regular, close monitoring of water resources. Traditional methods of water quality analysis are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and regular monitoring is financially burdensome. This study introduces the design and development of a customized water quality monitoring device as an alternative to traditional laboratory analysis. The device is portable, user-friendly, and capable of rapidly gathering real-time data. It features a multiparameter sensor that simultaneously measures temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and electrical conductivity (EC). After testing and calibration, the device showed a mean error of 0.91°C for temperature, –0.025 mg/L for DO, 0.09 for pH, and 0.033 mS/cm for EC. Forty seawater samples from nine Environmental Management Bureau coastline monitoring stations were analyzed using the device. Comparison with commercially available in situ devices showed a moderate coefficient of determination for DO and pH and a high coefficient of determination for EC and temperature, indicating that some environmental and user-related factors affect readings. Insights from empirical results and consultations with local stakeholders will inform future improvements of the device. Implementing this prototype can help to inform decisions on resource management, pollution control, and public health protection. Real-time data can aid in early detection of contaminants and pollution sources, which allows swift remedial action, and adaptive management practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For patients with breast cancer, delays in chemotherapy initiation have been adversely associated with recurrence and survival. We evaluated patient‐level factors associated with delayed chemotherapy initiation, from both diagnosis and surgery, in a community‐based cohort of women with early‐stage breast cancer. For the Optimal Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Dosing study, we identified a cohort of 34,109 women diagnosed with stage I–IIIA breast cancer at two U.S. integrated healthcare delivery systems between 2004 and 2019. We used logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to identify patient factors associated with delays in chemotherapy initiation after diagnosis (≥90 days) and surgery (≥60 days). Among 10,968 women receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, 21.1% experienced delays in chemotherapy initiation after diagnosis and 21.3% after surgery. Older age, non‐Hispanic Black and Hispanic race and ethnicity, and ER+ and/or PR+ disease were associated with increased likelihood of delays to chemotherapy initiation after diagnosis and surgery. People diagnosed in 2012–2019 (vs. 2005–2011), with a higher grade and larger tumor size were less likely to experience delays. Other factors were associated with a higher likelihood of delays specifically from diagnosis (earlier stage, mastectomy vs. breast‐conserving surgery), or surgery (higher comorbidity, increased nodal number). Women diagnosed with breast cancer who were at highest risk of progression and recurrence were less likely to experience delays in chemotherapy initiation after diagnosis and surgery. Understanding reasons for chemotherapy delays beyond patient factors may be potentially important to reduce risk of breast cancer recurrence and progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To know the spectrum of the aerobic bacteria causing post operative wound infections. Materials and methods: The present study was undertaken to know the bacteriological profile of SSIs in Obstetrics & Gynaecology ward, including their antibiogram and find the preventive measures. Age group 20-60 years, Presence of post operative SSI’s, involves only the skin or subcutaneous tissue were included in study. Results: In 94(45.7%) culture isolates, 42(44.70%) were Gram negative enteric rods, 26(27.65%) were Staphylococcus species and 26(27.65%) were Non fermenters. Predominant isolates were Klebsiella pneumoniae (28.72%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (25.53%) & Staphylococcus aureus (17.04%) respectively. Wound infection rate was more in emergency Obstetric cases (96.3%) compared to elective cases of Gynaec (77%) & Obstetric (73.3%). Methicillin resistant CoNS (60%). 6 CoNS were resistant out of 10 isolates which is significant hence speciation of CoNS should be done. Antibiogram in sensitive strains of Enterobacteriaceae shows highest sensitivity to Amikacin (86.3%). The antibiogram in resistant strains of Enterobacteriaceae shows highest sensitivity to Colistin (95%) & Imipenem (90%) and lowest sensitivity to AmoxyClav (30%). Sensitivity pattern in non-fermenters shows highest sensitivity to Imipenem (88.46%), whereas MBL producers shows highest sensitive to Colistin (100%) & Polymyxin (100%). Antibiogram of the Staphylococcus species shows highest sensitive to Clindamicin (100%) whereas for MRSA strains highest sensitive to Linezolid (100%). Conclusion: Drug resistance mechanisms which include ESBL, Amp C betalactamases, MBL producers exhibited by the predominant Gram-negative rods and MRSA strains in Gram positive isolates are due to overuse of antibiotics leading to selective pressure. Government has to intervene in strict implementation of antibiotic policy in all health care institutions. Availability of drug to patient is restricted only on doctor prescription. This article explores the genetic characteristics of malignant melanoma in adults with congenital nevi, a topic that has been primarily studied in children. The researchers analyzed a group of 76 patients and identified seven adults with melanoma arising from a congenital nevus. The study found that adult CMN melanomas had different genetic features compared to pediatric CMN melanomas, including the presence of certain mutations and deletions. The findings suggest potential therapeutic targets but also indicate resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment. Further research is needed to gain a better understanding of the genomic characteristics of CMN melanomas in adults. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
Background: Guidelines informing chemotherapy regimen selection are based on clinical trials with participants who do not necessarily represent general populations with breast cancer. Understanding who receives nonguideline regimens is important for understanding real-world chemotherapy administration and how it relates to patient outcomes. Methods: Using data from the Optimal Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Dosing (OBCD) study, based at Kaiser Permanente Northern California (2006-2019) and Kaiser Permanente Washington (2004-2015), we use logistic regression to examine the associations between patient characteristics and receipt of nonguideline chemotherapy regimens among 11,293 women with primary stage I to IIIA breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. Results: The use of nonguideline regimens was strongly associated with several factors, including older age [=80 vs. 18-39 years: OR, 5.25; 95% confidence interval (CI), 3.06-9.00; P-trend = 0.002] and HER2 status (HER2
+ vs. HER2- : OR, 3.44; 95% CI, 3.06-3.87) and was less likely in women with larger tumor size (>5 cm vs. 0.1 to =0.5 cm: OR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.36-0.87; P-trend = 0.01) and diagnosed in later years (2012-2019 vs. 2005-2011: OR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.71-0.90). Factors associated varied by type of nonguideline regimens. For example, women with comorbidity and older age were more likely to receive nonguideline drug combinations in particular, whereas women with larger tumor size were less likely to receive nonguideline administration schedules. Conclusions: Nonguideline chemotherapy regimens are more likely in certain patient populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has facilitated the first genome-wide evaluations of the contribution of de novo noncoding mutations to complex disorders. Using WGS, we identified 255,106 de novo mutations among sample genomes from members of 1902 quartet families in which one child, but not a sibling or their parents, was affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In contrast to coding mutations, no noncoding functional annotation category, analyzed in isolation, was significantly associated with ASD. Casting noncoding variation in the context of a de novo risk score across multiple annotation categories, however, did demonstrate association with mutations localized to promoter regions. We found that the strongest driver of this promoter signal emanates from evolutionarily conserved transcription factor binding sites distal to the transcription start site. These data suggest that de novo mutations in promoter regions, characterized by evolutionary and functional signatures, contribute to ASD.

Genomic association studies of common or rare protein-coding variation have established robust statistical approaches to account for multiple testing. Here we present a comparable framework to evaluate rare and de novo noncoding single-nucleotide variants, insertion/deletions, and all classes of structural variation from whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Integrating genomic annotations at the level of nucleotides, genes, and regulatory regions, we define 51,801 annotation categories. Analyses of 519 autism spectrum disorder families did not identify association with any categories after correction for 4,123 effective tests. Without appropriate correction, biologically plausible associations are observed in both cases and controls. Despite excluding previously identified gene-disrupting mutations, coding regions still exhibited the strongest associations. Thus, in autism, the contribution of de novo noncoding variation is probably modest in comparison to that of de novo coding variants. Robust results from future WGS studies will require large cohorts and comprehensive analytical strategies that consider the substantial multiple-testing burden.

- Abstract
Online distance learning is defined as using the internet to obtain appropriate learning resources, engage with the subjects, the teachers, and other students, and receive support during the learning process. In this study, the researchers attempt to analyze the effectiveness of online distance learning in the academic performance of grade 12 HUMSS students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. This research will significantly aid students in improving their academic performance through online distance learning. The researchers used Qualitative Method and Descriptive Research Design to obtain a general overview of the topic that pertains to the effectiveness of online distance learning in the academic performance of grade 12 HUMSS students. A Survey Questionnaire was used to gather information needed to discuss the topic. A convenience sampling technique was used in choosing the respondents. The study found that online distance learning is effective in students' academic performance, particularly in their assessment, score and retention. In online distance learning, students can keep track of their progress and maintain their assessment. Students can effortlessly submit their exams, quizzes, and other activities using their mobile devices, allowing them to maintain a good score. They can have prior knowledge about the lesson, allowing them to participate and collaborate in online distance learning. While answering, they can easily recall the lesson.

- Abstract
Horses and cattle have shown low susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2, and there is no evidence of experimental intraspecies transmission. Nonetheless, seropositive horses in the US and seropositive cattle in Germany and Italy have been reported. The current study investigated the prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in horses and cattle in Switzerland. In total, 1940 serum and plasma samples from 1110 horses and 830 cattle were screened with a species-specific ELISA based on the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) and, in the case of suspect positive results, a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) was used to demonstrate the neutralizing activity of the antibodies. Further confirmation of suspect positive samples was performed using either a pseudotype-based virus neutralization assay (PVNA; horses) or an indirect immunofluorescence test (IFA; cattle). The animals were sampled between February 2020 and December 2022. Additionally, in total, 486 bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), oropharyngeal, nasal and rectal swab samples from horses and cattle were analyzed for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA via reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Six horses (0.5%; 95% CI: 0.2–1.2%) were suspect positive via RBD-ELISA, and neutralizing antibodies were detected in two of them via confirmatory sVNT and PVNA tests. In the PVNA, the highest titers were measured against the Alpha and Delta SARS-CoV-2 variants. Fifteen cattle (1.8%; 95% CI: 1.0–3.0%) were suspect positive in RBD-ELISA; 3 of them had SARS-CoV-2-specific neutralizing antibodies in sVNT and 4 of the 15 were confirmed to be positive via IFA. All tested samples were RT-qPCR-negative. The results support the hypotheses that the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infections in horses and cattle in Switzerland was low up to the end of 2022.

- Abstract
We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational-wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM onboard triggers and subthreshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma rays from binary black hole mergers.

BODY image disturbance , *EATING disorders , *WEIGHT gain , *BODY weight , *GENDER identity - Abstract
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is distinct from other restrictive eating disorders in that body image disturbance or fear of weight gain do not drive restrictive eating. ARFID occurs across the full weight spectrum and youth with ARFID may still experience body weight/shape concerns, not necessarily pathological like body image disturbance is, but research is currently very limited. The current study examined how body weight/shape concerns vary across the full weight spectrum in youth with ARFID. As an exploratory aim, this study also assessed whether body weight/shape concerns differ by ARFID subtypes, age, and gender. Participants included 272 youth between the ages of 8 and 19 presenting for ARFID care at an urban pediatric hospital. Non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to examine relations between weight/shape concerns and weight status (i.e. underweight, normal weight, overweight/obesity), ARFID subtypes, age, and gender. Results showed that youth with ARFID and overweight/obesity weight status endorsed greater weight/shape concerns than those with ARFID and normal and underweight statuses (
p = .009). Youth who identified as gender identity other than male or female endorsed greater weight/shape concerns than those identifying as cis-male or cis-female (p = .01). However, there were no differences in weight/shape concerns by age or ARFID subtype. These findings demonstrate body weight/shape concerns among youth with ARFID, especially those with overweight/obesity weight status and who are gender diverse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

ENGLISH language ,PEARSON correlation (Statistics) ,CATHOLIC universities & colleges ,SCHOOL year ,STANDARD deviations ,SELF-confidence - Abstract
This study measured the level of self-confidence in English of 36 first-year English majors of Kabankalan Catholic College who were officially enrolled for the Academic Year 2022-2023. The participants' self-confidence in English was classified into five macro skills namely reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing skills. Their selfconfidence in the five skills was correlated to their performance in Purposive Communication course. Descriptivecorrelational design was used to determine the association between the two variables. An adopted and compiled standardized questionnaires from different sources were administered. Mean, standard deviation, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient were utilized for data analyses. The results revealed that males garnered higher mean results in the level of self confidence in English in terms of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills while females excelled in viewing skills. This finding implies that males are more confident in English compared to females. In terms of school of origin when taken as a whole, viewing skills got the highest mean while writing skills got the lowest mean for both private and public schools which implies that viewing skill is dominant due to digitalization and wide impact of media. Significant differences also vary in the five macro skills. A significant relationship was found between the students' self-confidence in English in terms of reading skills and their performance in Purposive Communication. Thus, the study suggests that language programs may be implemented to help enhance the students' English skills so they can fully excel in their academics and in the use of English language. Climate change poses a significant challenge for forest growers. However, understanding climate change adaptation including the behaviour and decisions of forest growers remains unexplored in New Zealand, despite the forestry sector being a significant export leader and major contributor to regional economies. To explore this, we conducted surveys of 60 forest growers from organisations which collectively manage more than 70% of New Zealand's plantation forests. The results showed that 47% of the respondents perceived that climate change will affect their forest growing, and 60% perceived that climate change will increase wildfire frequency and pest and disease outbreaks. Only 21% of the respondents reported that they had taken adaptation measures directly. Lack of resources and motivation were among the barriers that respondents identified. A logistic regression analysis revealed that climate change perception, research to improve forest growers' adaptive capacity, climate change information, forest grower age and forestry experience are significantly associated with actual adaptation decisions. Risk perceptions central to protection motivation theory (e.g. vulnerability, probability and severity) were not linked to actual adaptation decisions, suggesting that widening adaptation analyses beyond individual perceptions as predictors of climate change adaptation may provide insights for fit-for-purpose climate change adaptation policies for the sector. This research sheds light on the educational effects of WhatsApp in encouraging first-year engineering students to enhance their English Language proficiency. When it comes to apps that help you learn a new language on the go, WhatsApp is among the best. A WhatsApp English-club chat group was formed by sixty first-year engineering graduate students. For four months, the students spoke, shared, and commented on news stories in English. Furthermore, participants were asked to complete a post-test, a pre-test, and a questionnaire after the study was finished. Results showed that WhatsApp was an effective method of piqueing students' interest in improving their literacy skills. Their grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills all saw significant improvements. Students also had a positive impression of WhatsApp as a teaching tool for English, according to the report. Researchers found that students enrolled in WhatsApp English-club groups were more likely to work together to improve their language skills and had more opportunities to use the language in context, especially when it came to writing. Therefore, the research suggests that English instructors use WhatsApp as a teaching tool and encourage their students to create and join English-club groups on the messaging app. This would allow them to engage in more informal chats and practise contextualised language usage, which may be challenging in a traditional classroom environment.
