The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has carried out extensive studies of the gamma-ray source Geminga. Following the detection of pulsed X-rays (Halpern and Holt 1992) from Geminga, Bertsch et al. (1992) reported the same 237 ms periodicity to be visible in the EGRET data. A full analysis of the Geminga source shows that the energy spectrum is compatible with a power law with a spectral index of -1.50 +/- 0.08 between 30 MeV and 2 GeV. A falloff relative to the power law is observed for energies above 2 GeV. Phase-resolved spectra also show power laws with high-energy cutoffs, but with significant variation of the spectral index with phase. No unpulsed emission is observed. No evidence for time variation was found within the EGRET observations.

A sample of 22 Seyfert galaxies, 11 type 1 and two type 2 galaxies selected according to their X-ray fluxes in the AGN survey catalogs of EXOSAT and Ginga, two additional type 1 galaxies for which detections in low-energy gamma rays have been reported in the past, plus six more type 1 galaxies and one unclassified Seyfert that have been studied by the OSSE collaboration, have been examined for high-energy gamma ray emission in observations by the EGRET telescope on the Compton Observatory. No high-energy gamma-ray emission has been detected from any of them. The 2 σ upper limits of the gamma-ray fluxes above 100 MeV for these 22 Seyfert galaxies are given here. The significance of these negative results is discussed. Implications of the EGRET result for NGC 4151 are discussed in more detail

The quasar CTA 102 (QSO 2230 + 114) was observed four times in 1991-1992 by the EGRET high-energy gamma-ray telescope on the Compton GRO satellite. In the 1992 January 23-February 6 observation, emission was detected at the level (2.4 +/- 0.5) x 10 exp 7 photons/sq cm s (E is greater than 100 MeV). The other observations produced upper limits or detections with lower significance which are consistent with the same flux. The photon spectrum can be represented by a power law with a number index of 2.6 +/- 0.2, the softest so far observed by EGRET. The emitted gamma-ray luminosity, if isotropic, is 5 x 10 exp 47 ergs/s (H(0) = 75 km/s Mpc , q(0) = 0.5), although there are good reasons to believe that the gamma emission is strongly beamed.

Following the initial detection of 3C 279 as an intense high-energy gamma-ray emitter during a 1991, June 16-28 observation, the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory made a second observation during 1991, October 3-17. Low-sensitivity observations were also made during 1991, October 12-31 and 1992 April. The relatively intense June fluxes allowed the time structure to be determined down to the level of half-days. During this period a flux enhancement of about a factor of 4 is seen, lasting several days. The October exposures show fluxes somewhat below the minimum June flux, with no significant evidence of time variability. The 1992 April fluxes are well off the main instrument axis, and so the statistics are less compelling, but the evidence appears to show additional time variability. The observations are consistent with a model in which the gamma rays result from Compton scattering of low-energy photons by relativistic electrons in a jet.

The Crab pulsar and nebula were observed three times in 1991 April to June by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO): April 23 to May 7, May 16 to 30, and June 8 to 15. The results of analysis of the gamma-ray emission in the energy range from 50 MeV to more than 10 GeV are reported. The observed gamma-ray light curve exhibits two peaks separated in phase by 0.40 +/- 0.02, consistent with previous observations. The total pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar is found to be well represented by a power-law spectrum, softer than the spectrum measured by COS B (Clear et al., 1987). The interpulse emission has a harder spectrum than either of the pulses. The evidence for pulsed emission above 5 GeV in the EGRET data is not conclusive. Unpulsed emission in the energy range 50 MeV to 5 GeV was detected, with an indication of a hardening of the unpulsed spectrum above about 1 GeV. There was a significant change in the light curve over the 2 months of these observations, although the shape of the spectrum remained constant.

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) observed high-energy gamma rays from PKS 0537-441 during observations in 1991 July-August. Upper limits from later EGRET observations suggest time variability.

The calibration of the (EGRET) prior to its launch aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the continuing calibration after launch, and instrument-performance results based on calibrations and early postlaunch data, are described. Particular attention is given to the effective area, the annular resolution, and the energy resolution.

The first several pointing directions of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, launched on 1991 April 5, were toward the Galactic anticenter. In addition to the known gamma-ray sources, Crab and Geminga, high-energy gamma-ray emission was observed from the quasar PKS 0528 + 134 by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET). A redshift measurement, reported here, of 2.07 confirms the identification of this object as a quasar. The differential photon spectrum is well represented by a power law with an exponent of 2.56 +/- 0.09 and a photon intensity above 100 MeV of (8.4 +/- 1.0) x 10 exp -7 photons sq cm/s. There is evidence for time variability on a time scale of a few days.

High-energy gamma-ray emission has been detected from the quasar PKS 0208-512 in the energy range above 30 MeV by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. This region of sky was observed in five different viewing periods, and evidence of time variability in the gamma-ray emission by more than a factor of 3 was found. At the maximum intensity between 1991 September 19 and October 3, the flux density above 100 MeV was (9.1 +/- 0.4) x 10 exp -7 gamma/sq cm per sec. The photon spectrum during this period may be expressed as a power law with an exponent of - 1.69 +/- 0.05 between 30 MeV and 4 GeV. This is the hardest quasar spectrum observed by EGRET up to the present time.

The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory observed the Cygnus region of the Galaxy during the periods 1991 May 30-June 8 and 1991 August 8-15. We report on a periodicity analysis of the gamma rays originating from the direction of Cygnus X-3. This analysis showed no evidence of periodic modulation during these observations of the gamma-ray emission at the approximately 4.8 hr period observed at X-ray wavelengths.

The LMC provides a valuable site to study gamma-ray production, intensity, and distribution in an external galaxy. Using 4 weeks of data from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, high-energy gamma-ray emission was detected for the first time from the LMC region. These gamma rays are believed to be produced primarily through the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar matter. Hence, combined with a knowledge of the interstellar matter distribution, they can provide a direct measure of the cosmic-ray density in an external galaxy. The results obtained from EGRET observations indicate that the level of cosmic rays in the LMC is comparable to that in our Galaxy. The integrated flux above 100 MeV is (1.9 +/- 0.4) x 10 exp -7 photons/(sq cm s). The measured flux suggests a cosmic-ray density level consistent with that expected from a quasi-stable equilibrium model. This is the first detection of a normal galaxy outside the Milky Way in high-energy gamma rays.

Gamma radiation in the energy range from 50 MeV to well over 1 GeV has been observed from the direction of the BL Lac object Markarian 421 by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope on the Compton Observatory during the period 1991 June 27-July 11. The source flux is weak, but still statistically significant at the level of 10 exp -5; the integrated photon flux above 100 MeV is (1.4 +/- 0.3) x 10 exp -7/sq cm s. The differential photon energy spectrum can be represented by a power law with exponent 1.96 +/- 0.14. This is the first detection of gamma-ray emission from a BL Lac object.

Intense gamma radiation has been observed from the direction of the quasar 3C 279 throughout the energy range from 30 MeV to over 5 GeV by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) during the period June 15-28, 1991. Its spectrum is well represented by a photon differential power-law exponent of 2.0 +/- 0.1, with a photon intensity above 100 MeV of (2.8 +/- 0.4) x 10 exp -6/sq cm s. For E is greater than 100 MeV, the 2-sigma upper limits were 1.0 x 10 exp -6/sq cm s in 1973 from the SAS 2 observations and 0.3 x 10 exp -6/sq cm s for the combined 1976, 1978, and 1980 COS B observations. Hence, there has been a large increase in high-energy gamma-ray intensity relative to the earlier times, as there has been in the radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray ranges. This source is the most distant and by far the most luminous gamma-ray source yet detected.

The EGRET telescope, one of the instruments to be carried on NASA's Gamma Ray Observatory, is designed to explore the high-energy portion (20 - 24,000 MeV) of the electromagnetic spectrum. A calibration source of ?-rays over this wide energy range has been used at SLAC, together with an appropriate set of intensity-monitoring instruments, to conduct a calibration of the EGRET telescope over this energy range for the full telescope aperture. The calibration method and an overview of the results are described.

A search is made for anisotropic X-ray bremsstrahlung photon production from relativistic electrons by studying the heliocentric angular dependence of 53 flares detected at energies above 300 keV. No evidence is found for a higher rate of detectable flares near the limb at the 80 percent confidence level. This result implies that the X-ray directivity as defined by the ratio of photon intensity at 75 deg and 0 deg of heliocentric angle is less than 1.5 above 300 keV and strongly rejects any flare model predicting X-ray production from a radial 'beam' of energetic electrons.

The Crab pulsar (PSR0531 + 21) was one of the earliest identified sources of high-energy γ radiation1–6. As such it was selected as the first object of detailed study by ESA's γ-ray astronomy satellite COS B, launched in August 1975. The experiment and mission have been described elsewhere7. In the first 6 yr of operation COS B has made five observations (each of 30–40 days duration) in which PSR0531 + 21 was within 15° of the centre of the field of view. The first of these confirmed the result of the SAS 2 experiment that the γ-ray light curve for energies above a few tens of MeV consisted essentially of two equally strong peaks but the later measurements found a decrease in the strength of the second peak relative to the first. No change was observed in the 2–12 keV X-ray light curve simultaneously measured by COS B. The total data from the five observations contain the first evidence of interpulse emission between the two peaks in the energy range 50–3,000 MeV.

An analysis of the temporal distribution of 139 solar flares monitored by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer aboard the Solar Maximum Mission is reported. It is found that, instead of being randomly distributed in time, these events have a tendency to occur in groups with a mean spacing of about 154 days (75 nHz) over the observing interval. A larger sample of flares with an X-ray classification of M 2.5 or larger recorded by the GOES satellite showed a similar regularity.

The unidentified source of the γ-ray burst of 5 March 1979, GBS0526–66, may be located in the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud1, though some authors2,3 have questioned the implied distance of 55 kpc. Among several unusual features of the source (reviewed by Cline4) is its repeatability: a total of 16 γ-ray bursts have been reported3, which may be periodic5. Only γ-ray bursts have been detected from this source. The situation for other γ-ray burst sources is not very different. Optical transients are known, in three cases6,7, to have occurred near positions of later γ-ray bursts. Even so, no source has been identified optically8–10, and only upper limits are known for simultanous emission of optical radiation with γ-ray bursts11. Here we report that GBS0526–66 was monitored for ∼910 h, using a high speed photoelectric photometer, attached to a 50 cm telescope at ESO/La Silla. Three short optical flashes were found, which may possibly be related to the γ-ray burst phenomenon. The most intense of these occurred on 1984 February 8 UT 07:42. It reached a maximum brightness corresponding to m(visual) = 8.7. The shape of the light curve bears remarkable similarity to the initial 200 ms of the 1979 March γ-ray burst.

The Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) is currently planned for a launch from the space shuttle in 1990. After the long hiatus in high-energy gamma-ray astronomy since the end of the COS-B mission in 1982, the Soviet missions Granat and Gamma-1 and the NASA mission GRO will resume observations in the energy range from below 100 keV and extending to above 10 GeV. GRO will carry four instruments designed to cover this range of over five decades in photon energy. It is planned to perform a complete sky survey above 1 MeV in the first year of the GRO mission. Data from this survey will be used to study galactic and extragalactic sources of gamma radiation as well as the galactic and extragalactic diffuse emissions. Additionally, measurements of gamma ray bursts will be performed. The angular and spectral resolution of the GRO instruments is significantly improved with respect to previous experiments. The sensitivity for point sources will be better by an order of magnitude, and the location of strong, high energy sources will be determined to about 0.1°–0.2°. After a brief description of the complement of GRO instruments, a detailed discussion of the high-energy telescope EGRET, its design and scientific objectives, is presented in this review.

The fully samples Columbia 1/sup 0/ CO survey and the Berkeley H I survey are compared with the COS B gamma-ray survey. As a first step, the study is limited to the high-energy gamma-rays (Eapprox.300 MeV). It is found that a simple model, in which uniformly distributed cosmic rays interact with the interstellar gas, as traced by H I and CO, can account for almost all the observed gamma-rays. Furthermore, if the contribution from point sources to the gamma-ray flux is significant, these sources must have a galactic distribution similar to that of CO. The analysis permits calibration of the ratio between H/sub 2/ column density and integrated CO line intensity: N(H/sub 2/)/W/sub CO/ = (1-3) 10/sup 2/0 molecules cm/sup -2/ K/sup -1/ km/sup -1/ s.

Time histories and count-rate spectra of some of the gamma-ray bursts detected by the spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission between Feb. 20, 1980, and May 1981 are presented. Individual peaks observed in some of the bursts are found to differ significantly in hardness from one another. The similarity in the time profiles in the different energy bands is seen as suggesting that photons spanning two decades in energy are produced by the same mechanism. It is noted that all of the bursts are detected to energies greater than approximately 1 MeV. Two of the spectra presented are seen as being well fit by single power laws; the indices, however, are strikingly different. The other two sepctra require either two power laws or an exponential function. No clear evidence is found for the existence of narrow line features in any of the bursts.

Since launch in early 1980 the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) onboard the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite has monitored the sun at gamma-ray energies. In addition to observations of solar flares, cosmic gamma-ray bursts, and precipitating radiation belt electrons, the instrument has detected a new class of high-energy transient events that cannot be attributed to any of these phenomena. The duration of these transients can range from 1 second to more than 10 minutes. The average event rate between 1980 and 1986 was about five per month. However, in February 1987 this rate increased by more than a factor of 25 and continued at this high level until June 1988. These transients can be subdivided into three classes: (i) 0.511-megaelectron volt annihilation line events, (ii) particle events, and (iii) broad-band photon continuum-like events. Evidence is presented that these transients are not of natural origin. It is found that the most likely sources of these events are reactors in earth orbiting satellites. Apart from the threat these reactors pose upon accidental reentry, the reactor-generated transients may have a deleterious effect on cosmic observations obtained with gamma-ray detectors in low earth orbit.

Observations with the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) show more than 30 unidentified gamma-ray sources concentrated along the Galactic plane. Based on their spatial distribution, the typical distances of the sources are found to be between 1.2 and 6 kpc. Luminosity estimates made using the estimated distances of the sources and their observed gamma-ray fluxes lie in the range (0.7-16.7) x 10(exp 35) ergs/s. These values, on the average, appear to be higher than the luminosities of the gamma-ray pulsars observed by EGRET. The luminosity estimates indicate that the low-latitude unidentified EGRET sources cannot be explained as a group of older, low-luminosity pulsars like Geminga, although the high-latitude sources may be candidates.

We report upper limits to the high-energy gamma-ray emission from the millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in a number of globular clusters. The observations were done as part of an all-sky survey by the energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) during Phase I of the CGRO mission (1991 June to 1992 November). Several theoretical models suggest that MSPs may be sources of high-energy gamma radiation emitted either as primary radiation from the pulsar magnetosphere or as secondary radiation generated by conversion into photons of a substantial part of the relativistic e(+/-) pair wind expected to flow from the pulsar. To date, no high-energy emission has been detected from an individual MSP. However, a large number of MSPs are expected in globular cluster cores where the formation rate of accreting binary systems is high. Model predictions of the total number of pulsars range in the hundreds for some clusters. These expectations have been reinforced by recent discoveries of a substantial number of radio MSPs in several clusters; for example, 11 have been found in 47 Tucanae (Manchester et al.). The EGRET observations have been used to obtain upper limits for the efficiency eta of conversion of MSP spin-down power into hard gamma rays. The upper limits are also compared with the gamma-ray fluxes predicted from theoretical models of pulsar wind emission (Tavani). The EGRET limits put significant constraints on either the emission models or the number of pulsars in the globular clusters.

During its full-sky survey, the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) high-energy instrument aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory detected gamma-ray emission in the energy range above 30 MeV from a source identified as the blazar PKS 0420-014. This object was observed during two separate viewing periods in 1992 February/March and May/June. An intensity decrease above 100 MeV of a factor of at least 1.5 from a maximum of (5.0 +/- 1.4) x 10(exp -7) photons 1 sq cm/s was observed during that time interval indicating extensive variability. The photon spectrum in the range between 30 and 10,000 MeV at the time of the maximum intensity is well represented by a power law with an exponent of -1.9 +/- 0.3. Some similarities with other EGRET detected blazars are briefly discussed.

High-energy gamma radiation has been observed from the optically violent variable quasar 3C 454.3 (PKS 2251 + 158) by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope on the Compton Observatory. During the 1992 January-February observation, the emission showed a power-law photon spectrum with an exponent of -2.18 +/- 0.08. The flux density (greater than 100 MeV) was observed to vary within the range (0.4-1.4) x 10 exp -6 photon/sq cm s on a time scale of less than a week. Lower sensitivity observations during 1992 April and May also detected emission within that range, but with lower statistical significance. An earlier low-sensitivity exposure during 1991 August gave a 95 percent confidence upper limit of 0.26 x 10 exp 6 photon/sq cm s. The similarity of the gamma-ray emission of 3C 454.3 to that of 3C 279 parallels the similarity of these two objects at lower frequencies.

An array of gamma-ray detectors based on silicon drift detectors (SDD) coupled to thallium activated cesium iodide (CsI(Tl)) scintillating crystals is presented. Because of SDDs low output capacitance and the possibility to have the first amplifying stage directly integrated on chip, SDDs show better noise performance than traditional p-i-n photodiodes. The array is read out with custom made ASICs built to match with the SDDs electrical properties. Shaped signals are digitally converted by a digital front-end electronic board which also takes care of ASICs handshaking. The system architecture is based on that of the IBIS/PICsIT instrument onboard the INTEGRAL satellite, at present fully operative. The instrument has been designed as a calorimeter module suitable to work in conjunction with the MEGA Compton telescope prototype, developed at the Max-Planck Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE), Garching, Germany. The calorimeter module will detect photons scattered by the MEGA silicon tracker. The improvements in energy resolution provided by SDD/CsI(Tl) detectors should improve the overall energy and angular resolution of the Compton telescope. The detectors properties and the system performance, from analogue signal conditioning to the digital data handling will be reported and discussed.

We report the discovery of a remarkable gamma-ray transient source near the Galactic plane, GRO J1838-04. This source was serendipitously discovered by EGRET in June 1995 with a peak intensity of 4 E(-6) ph/cm/cm/s (for photon energies larger than 100 MeV) and a 5.9 sigma significance. At that time, GRO J1838-04 was the second brightest gamma-ray source in the sky. A subsequent EGRET pointing in late September 1995 detected the source at a flux smaller than its peak value by a factor of 7. We determined that no radio-loud spectrally-flat blazar is within the error box of GRO J1838-04. We discuss the origin of the \ggg-ray transient source and show that interpretations in terms of AGNs or isolated pulsars are highly problematic. In the course of a full-sky survey, the EGRET instrument aboard the Compton Observatory detected an intense, high Galactic latitude source, which is identified as the OVV (optically violent variable) quasar 1633 + 382. The spectrum is represented by a power law with an energy spectral index of 0.9 between 30 MeV and 30 GeV. The gamma-ray power per decade is about 100 times larger than typical values at any longer wavelength. Significant variation of the gamma-ray flux density on a time scale as short as two days was observed, limiting the size of the region in which the gamma-rays are produced. Assuming the X-rays detected by the Einstein Observatory from this quasar are produced in the same region as the gamma-rays, and a similar X-ray flux density was extant at the time of the EGRET observation, the emission must be beamed to avoid a pair-production optical depth of 10 exp 4 which would exist otherwise. If beaming arises from bulk relativistic motion, the minimum Doppler factor required is 7.6.

The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. The order-of-magnitude improvement compared to previous MeV missions also enables discoveries of a wide range of phenomena whose energy output peaks in the relatively unexplored medium-energy gamma-ray band., Comment: Astro2020 APC White Paper Updated to make small change to author list in metadata

In this paper we present first results of a statistical analysis of correlated variability behaviour of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ) on the basis of EGRET data and cm-wavelength monitoring data. We use EGRET observations obtained between April 1991 to September 1993 and multifrequency radio observations at 2.8cm, 6cm and 11cm taken with the 100-m-Effelsberg Telescope parallel to the CGRO observations. In the following discussion the observed FSRQ which have not been detected by EGRET yet, are referred to as ‘candidates’ in contrast to the detected ones, called ‘EGRET-sources’. The methods used in this paper are described in more detail in Mucke et al. (1996).

The data from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) all-sky survey are examined for emission from the nearby galaxies M31, M87, NGC 253, and M82 in the high-energy (E greater than MeV) gamma-ray range. No significant emission is observed from any of these galaxies. The derived upper limits for all four galaxies are consistent with that expected from cosmic-ray interactions. For M87, the combination of the high-energy gamma-ray and radio data point to a lower limit of 7 microG for the magnetic field in the disk and 4 microG for the magnetic field in the halo, consistent with equipartition arguments. A study of NGC 253 and M82 show that EGRET observations do not sufficiently constrain the mean cosmic-ray energy density to provide more details on the cosmic-ray distribution in starburst galaxies.

We discuss the feasibility of using the coherent electric field in crystal as a means for gamma-ray astronomy. At 100 GeV, pair production is enhanced along the crystalline axis. However, the expected celestial gamma-ray flux at this energy is insufficient for this technique to be viable with a conventional-size satellite detector.

LOCALISED γ-ray sources contribute to the overall galactic emission; some of these sources have been identified with known astronomical objects1,2, while several unidentified γ-ray sources have also been reported3,4. We describe here a search for γ-ray sources using data from the ESA γ-ray satellite COS B which revealed 10 new unidentified sources. These sources seem to be galactic with typical γ-ray luminosities above 100 MeV in excess of 1035 erg s−1.

Gamma-ray continuum emission from 0.3 to 1 MeV was observed with the gamma-ray spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite during two impulsive solar flares on 1980 March 29, from active region 2363 at 0918 UT and from active region 2357 at 0955 UT. Evidence is presented for a hardening of the spectrum during the impulsive phase of the flares. The photon intensity greater than 100 keV appears to decay at a slower rate than that at lower energies. Time-integrated photon spectra for both flares are incompatible with a single-temperature thermal-bremsstrahlung model. Upper limits for prompt and delayed gamma-ray lines are presented.

The Gamma-Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite observed ..gamma..-ray lines during the 0312 UT solar flare on 1980 June 7. The impulsive X- and ..gamma..-ray event lasted for or approx. =50 MeV, produced during a approx.40 s interval overlapping the impulsive photon emission time interval. A total production of 4 x 10/sup 29/ neutrons is required, if they were produced isotropically.

Data accumulated from 1980 to 1987 by the gamma-ray spectrometer aboard the SMM are analyzed to search for annual increases at 1.275 MeV as evidence of Na-22 decay in the Galactic center region and in the ejecta of recent individual novae. No evidence of any 1.275 MeV emission of celestial origin is found. A limit of 3 x 10 to the -6th solar mass is placed on the accumulated Na-22 from many novae occurring near the Galactic center, and a limit of 7 x 10 to the -7th solar mass is placed on the mass of Na-22 ejected by the closest of the recent neon-rich novae.

Results are presented for the flare of July 1, 1980, which started at approximately 1627 UT and in which simultaneous measurements were made of X-ray, gamma-ray, and optical continuum emission for the entire duration of the flare. The X-ray and gamma-ray observations were made by the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. The optical measurements were taken at the Sacramento Peak Observatory and the Big Bear Solar Observatory (Zirin and Neidig, 1981). It is found that the major white-light emission that occurs in the late phase of the flare could not have been due to heating by electron or ion precipitation. This conclusion derives from the fact that the X-ray and gamma-ray flux peaks approximately 1 minute before the maximum of the optical continuum mission emission. It is also found that approximately 73 percent of the optical continuum emission, representing a spatially and temporally distinct bright point, follows this maximum with little or no X-ray or gamma-ray emission in the same period.

The Gamma Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite has observed energetic solar neutrons (greater than 50 MeV) at the earth following a solar flare that occurred on the west limb on June 21, 1980 at 01:18:20 UT. Impulsive photon emission from 10 keV to greater than 65 MeV lasting over a period of about 66 s was followed by a transient flux of 50-600 MeV neutrons incident over a 17 minute period. The peak counting rate corresponds to an average flux at the earth of (3.8 + or - 0.6) x 10 to the -2nd neutrons/sq cm s at 130 MeV. These observations indicate the emission of 3 x 10 to the 28th neutrons/sr with energies greater than 50 MeV, requiring the rapid acceleration (much less than 60 s) of protons to GeV energies during the impulsive phase of the flare.

THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min±6 min, δ(1950)= +3°±1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50–500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s−1 for H0 = 60 km s−1 Mpc−1.
