More than 1 billion people worldwide have a disability, and they are all affected by politics. This two-volume work explores key topics at the heart of disability policy, such as voting, race, gender, age, health care, social security, transportation, abuse, and the environment.Disability policy is no longer an area that can be adequately addressed within major areas of public policy such as welfare, health, labor, and education. Disability has become widely acknowledged in recent decades, partly because of the increasing number of disabled citizens across all demographic populations. Advocates argue that diversity of all kinds deserves recognition and accommodation. This set examines policies targeting disability to provide a multifaceted description of the political participation of people with disabilities as well as disability policy development in the United States. The first volume focuses on political participation and voting issues, and the second volume covers disability public policy.In these two volumes, numerous scholars and experts in the social sciences and humanities explore timely topics that are key to disability policy questions, including activism, voting, race, gender, age, health care, social security, civil rights, abuse, the environment, and even death. This book highlights important but insufficiently documented dimensions of the experience of English-speaking Caribbean immigrants in the United States. It focuses on successes and challenges of what might be perceived as “living in two worlds.” The central theme, post-migration transnational connections, is informed by new research on the topic. The thrust of the book is on trends, practices, and policies pertaining to transnational issues, and it uses both academic and applied approaches in its research. Having examined contemporary adjustment concerns of Caribbean immigrants, the authors present research findings, critical analyses, and suggest possible solutions to social and psychological problems immigrants confront as their life space is influenced by both places of origin and destination. This book fills a void in the literature pertaining to the emerging transnational experiences of Anglophone Caribbean immigrants that has not been fully explored.

Many recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and other low-income individuals find or keep jobs for a while, but far fewer remain steadily employed, advance in the labor market, or earn wages that lift their families out of poverty. To address these issues, a number of initiatives have aimed to help low-wage workers stay employed and move up in the labor market. Several such programs, trying different strategies, were studied as part of a multiyear, multisite evaluation called the Employment Retention and Advancement (ERA) project. This book examines the ERA program which outlines a few strategies that succeeded in improving individuals'employment retention and earnings as well as strategies that did not. Key findings and lessons are detailed.

Homesickness today is dismissed as a sign of immaturity, what children feel at summer camp, but in the nineteenth century it was recognized as a powerful emotion. When gold miners in California heard the tune'Home, Sweet Home,'they sobbed. When Civil War soldiers became homesick, army doctors sent them home, lest they die. Such images don't fit with our national mythology, which celebrates the restless individualism of colonists, explorers, pioneers, soldiers, and immigrants who supposedly left home and never looked back. Using letters, diaries, memoirs, medical records, and psychological studies, this wide-ranging book uncovers the profound pain felt by Americans on the move from the country's founding until the present day. Susan Matt shows how colonists in Jamestown longed for and often returned to England, African Americans during the Great Migration yearned for their Southern homes, and immigrants nursed memories of Sicily and Guadalajara and, even after years in America, frequently traveled home. These iconic symbols of the undaunted, forward-looking American spirit were often homesick, hesitant, and reluctant voyagers. National ideology and modern psychology obscure this truth, portraying movement as easy, but in fact Americans had to learn how to leave home, learn to be individualists. Even today, in a global society that prizes movement and that condemns homesickness as a childish emotion, colleges counsel young adults and their families on how to manage the transition away from home, suburbanites pine for their old neighborhoods, and companies take seriously the emotional toll borne by relocated executives and road warriors. In the age of helicopter parents and boomerang kids, and the new social networks that sustain connections across the miles, Americans continue to assert the significance of home ties. By highlighting how Americans reacted to moving farther and farther from their roots, Homesickness: An American History revises long-held assumptions about home, mobility, and our national identity.

The emergence of the Hispanic population in the United States and the incre- ing pro?le of Latin America on the North and South American continents have raised the pro?le of “Latino” issues in the American consciousness. Much of this attention, however, has revolved around trends in culture, art, food and music or pathological concerns about poverty, crime, drugs, and immigration. At best, the scholarly and policy assessments of the implications of the impact of Latinos in the United States revolve around Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Central Americans(aswellasthechildrenofanolderCubanpopulation)andtheirstruggles toachieveameasureofeducation,healthcare,employment,andcivilrights. What have not been adequately addressed are the demographic trends affecting Latinos in the United States, Mexico, and Latin America, particularly the aging of the H- panic population and its resultant health and long-term care needs. That Latinos are living longer and shifting from a youthful population to an increasingly older cohort is little known, except among the small cadre of Hispanic gerontologists. Ironically, this invisibility of aging Hispanics is juxtaposed to the almost p- icked response of the U. S. media and public toward the aging of the general U. S. population and the?scal and political controversies over Social Security, Me- care, and health care costs. The policy debates of an aging U. S. population as a whole arise from substantial research and policy analysis—a level of attention not seen with regard to the aging of the Hispanic population.

The Geology and Hydrogeology of Carbonate Islands presents a survey of more than 30 selected islands such as Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, coastal Yucatan, Barbados, the Caymans, Isla de Mona, islands of Polynesia, the Cooks, Guam, Niue, Nauru, Rottnest Island, the Houtman Abrolhos, islands of the Great Barrier Reef and many atolls including Enewetak, Tarawa, Diego Garcia, Mururoa, and the Cocos Islands. The book provides a wealth of observational data and a survey of interpretations on the issues within the intersection of carbonate geology (depositional architecture, diagenetic processes and dolomitization, Cenozoic sea-level history, karstification and blue holes) and island hydrology (distribution of fresh and brackish groundwater, dual-aquifer conceptualizations, modeling of island lenses, water budgets and water resources, effects of climatic variations, island karst, endo-upwelling).
