Abstract

This paper presents group discussions taking place within multidisciplinary topical network 33 of the CNRS Information and Communication Science and Technology (STIC) Department. It attempts to clarify the concept of document in its transtion to electronic form, based on research which tends to privilege form (as a material or immaterial object), sign (as meaningful object) or medium (as communication vector). Each of these terms reflects the radical transformations that are taking place. Their superposition stresses the importance of multidisciplinarity for a lucid and complete analysis of the concept and how it is changing.

Abstract

The presence and abundance of MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be studied with microlensing searches. The 10 events detected by the EROS and MACHO groups suggest that objects with 0.5 Mo could fill 50% of the dark halo. This preferred mass is quite surprising, and increasing the presently small statistics is a crucial issue. Additional microlensing of stars too dim to be resolved in crowded fields should be detectable using the Pixel Method. We present here an application of this method to the EROS 91-92 data (one tenth of the whole existing data set). We emphasize the data treatment required for monitoring pixel fluxes. Geometric and photometric alignments are performed on each image. Seeing correction and error estimates are discussed. 3.6" x 3.6" super-pixel light curves, thus produced, are very stable over the 120 days time-span. Fluctuations at a level of 1.8% of the flux in blue and 1.3% in red are measured on the pixel light curves. This level of stability is comparable with previous estimates. The data analysis dedicated to the search of possible microlensing events together with refined simulations will be presented in a companion paper. Recent surveys monitoring millions of light curves of resolved stars in the LMC have discovered several microlensing events. Unresolved stars could however significantly contribute to the microlensing rate towards the LMC. Monitoring pixels, as opposed to individual stars, should be able to detect stellar variability as a variation of the pixel flux. We present a first application of this new type of analysis (Pixel Method) to the LMC Bar. We describe the complete procedure applied to the EROS 91-92 data (one tenth of the existing CCD data set) in order to monitor pixel fluxes. First, geometric and photometric alignments are applied to each images. Averaging the images of each night reduces significantly the noise level. Second, one light curve for each of the 2.1 10^6 pixels is built and pixels are lumped into 3.6"x3.6" super-pixels, one for each elementary pixel. An empirical correction is then applied to account for seeing variations. We find that the final super-pixel light curves fluctuate at a level of 1.8% of the flux in blue and 1.3% in red. We show that this noise level corresponds to about twice the expected photon noise and confirms previous assumptions used for the estimation of the contribution of unresolved stars. We also demonstrate our ability to correct very efficiently for seeing variations affecting each pixel flux. The technical results emphasised here show the efficacy of the Pixel Method and allow us to study luminosity variations due to possible microlensing events and variable stars in two companion papers.

Abstract

We present the analysis of the first two years of a search for microlensing of stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud with the EROS (Exp\'erience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres) project. A single event is detected, already present in the first year analysis. This low event rate allows us to put new constraints on the fraction of the Galactic Halo mass due to compact objects in the mass range [10^-2, 1] Msol. These limits, along with the fact that the two SMC events observed so far are probably due to SMC deflectors, suggest that LMC and SMC self-lensing may dominate the event rate., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revised version accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Abstract

We present a new compilation of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), a new data set of low-redshift nearby-Hubble-flow SNe, and new analysis procedures to work with these heterogeneous compilations. This >Union> compilation of 414 SNe Ia, which reduces to 307 SNe after selection cuts, includes the recent large samples of SNe Ia from the Supernova Legacy Survey and ESSENCE Survey, the older data sets, as well as the recently extended data set of distant supernovae observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). A single, consistent, and blind analysis procedure is used for all the various SN Ia subsamples, and a new procedure is implemented that consistently weights the heterogeneous data sets and rejects outliers. We present the latest results from this Union compilation and discuss the cosmological constraints from this new compilation and its combination with other cosmological measurements (CMB and BAO). The constraint we obtain from supernovae on the dark energy density is ¿¿ = 0.713+ 0.027¿0.029(stat)+ 0.036¿0.039(sys) , for a flat, ¿CDM universe. Assuming a constant equation of state parameter, w, the combined constraints from SNe, BAO, and CMB give w = ¿ 0.969+ 0.059¿0.063(stat)+ 0.063¿0.066(sys) . While our results are consistent with a cosmological constant, we obtain only relatively weak constraints on a w that varies with redshift. In particular, the current SN data do not yet significantly constrain w at z > 1. With the addition of our new nearby Hubble-flow SNe Ia, these resulting cosmological constraints are currently the tightest available.

Abstract

We report on intensive photometric monitoring on 18 June 1998 of MACHO SMC-98-1, a binary-lens microlensing event seen toward the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The observations cover 5.3 hours (UT 5:17 -- 10:37), and show a sharp drop of 1.8 mag during the first 1.8 hours, followed by an abrupt flattening at UT 7:08 +- 0:02. We interpret the kink at 7:08 as the end of the second caustic crossing (when the source first moved completely outside the caustic). These results indicate that mu sin(phi), Comment: 4 pages, 4 ps figures. Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics. Halo interpretation excluded at the 93% CL (instead of 89%)

Abstract

We present here an analysis of the light curves of 5.3 million stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud observed by EROS (Exp\'erience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres). One star exhibits a variation that is best interpreted as due to gravitational microlensing by an unseen object. This candidate was also reported by the MACHO collaboration. Once corrected for blending, the Einstein radius crossing time is 123 days, corresponding to lensing by a Halo object of $2.6^{+8.2}_{-2.3} M_{\odot}$. The maximum magnification is a factor of 2.6. The light curve also displays a periodic modulation with a 2.5% amplitude and a period of 5.1 days. Parallax analysis of the candidate indicates that a Halo lens would need to have a mass of at least $0.3 M_{\odot}$, although a lens in the SMC could have a mass as low as $0.07 M_{\odot}}$. We estimate the optical depth for microlensing towards the SMC due to this event to be $\sim 3.3 \times 10^{-7}$, with an uncertainty dominated by Poisson statistics. We show that this optical depth corresponds to about half that expected for a spherical isothermal Galactic Halo comprised solely of such objects, and that it is consistent with SMC self-lensing if the SMC is elongated along the line-of-sight by at least 5 kpc., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures (9 included .eps and 2 separate .gif). Abstract

Background The paradigm™2 and 4 phase 3 clinical trials investigated the safety and efficacy of nonacog beta pegol, a recombinant glyco PEGylated factor IX ( FIX) with extended half-life, in previously treated haemophilia B patients. Aim These post hoc analyses investigated the bleeding patterns in target joints. Methods Patients randomized to 40 or 10 IU kg−1 once weekly prophylaxis who had at least one target joint were included. Baseline demographics and disease-specific data were collected. Bleeding patterns were assessed, and an International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis ( ISTH) definition of target joints was used. Results A total of 67% and 8% of patients in the 40 and 10 IU kg−1 arm, respectively, did not experience target joint bleeds during the paradigm™2 trial. Twenty-four target joints were recorded in each prophylaxis arm at baseline. During the paradigm™2 trial, no bleeds were reported in 17 (71%) and 7 (29%) target joints in the 40 and 10 IU kg−1 arms respectively. All target joint bleeds in the 40 IU kg−1 once weekly prophylaxis arm were controlled with a single injection of 40 IU kg−1 nonacog beta pegol. By the latest ISTH definition, 90% and 58% of target joints in the 40 and 10 IU kg−1 arms, respectively, were no longer considered target joints at the end of the paradigm™2 trial. At the end of the paradigm™4 extension trial, all target joints in the 40 IU kg−1 arm were no longer considered target joints. Abstract

Recent surveys monitoring millions of light curves of resolved stars in the LMC have discovered several microlensing events. Unresolved stars could however significantly contribute to the microlensing rate towards the LMC. Monitoring pixels, as opposed to individual stars, should be able to detect stellar variability as a variation of the pixel flux. We present a first application of this new type of analysis (Pixel Method) to the LMC Bar. We describe the complete procedure applied to the EROS 91-92 data (one tenth of the existing CCD data set) in order to monitor pixel fluxes. First, geometric and photometric alignments are applied to each images. Averaging the images of each night reduces significantly the noise level. Second, one light curve for each of the 2.1 10^6 pixels is built and pixels are lumped into 3.6"x3.6" super-pixels, one for each elementary pixel. An empirical correction is then applied to account for seeing variations. We find that the final super-pixel light curves fluctuate at a level of 1.8% of the flux in blue and 1.3% in red. We show that this noise level corresponds to about twice the expected photon noise and confirms previous assumptions used for the estimation of the contribution of unresolved stars. We also demonstrate our ability to correct very efficiently for seeing variations affecting each pixel flux. Abstract

The EROS-2 project was designed to test the hypothesis that massive compact halo objects (the so-called ``machos'') could be a major component of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way galaxy. To this end, EROS-2 monitored over 6.7 years $33\times10^6$ stars in the Magellanic clouds for microlensing events caused by such objects. In this work, we use only a subsample of $7\times10^6$ bright stars spread over $84 \deg^2$ of the LMC and $9 \deg^2$ of the SMC. The strategy of using only bright stars helps to discriminate against background events due to variable stars and allows a simple determination of the effects of source confusion (blending). The use of a large solid angle makes the survey relatively insensitive to effects that could make the optical depth strongly direction dependent. Using this sample of bright stars, only one candidate event was found, whereas $\sim39$ events would have been expected if the Halo were entirely populated by objects of mass $M\sim0.4M_{\odot}$. Combined with the results of EROS-1, this implies that the optical depth toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (\object{LMC}) due to such lenses is $\tau<0.36\times10^{-7}$ (95%CL), corresponding to a fraction of the halo mass of less than 8%. This optical depth is considerably less than that measured by the MACHO collaboration in the central region of the LMC. More generally, machos in the mass range $0.6\times10^{-7}M_\odot

Abstract

The recently cloned very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) receptor binds triglyceride-rich, apolipoprotein-E-containing lipoproteins with high affinity. The observation that VLDL receptor mRNA is abundantly expressed in extracts of tissues such as skeletal muscle and heart, but not liver, has led to the hypothesis that this receptor may facilitate the peripheral uptake of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. However, little information is available concerning the types of cells that express this receptor in vivo. As expression of the VLDL receptor in the vascular wall might have important implications for the uptake and transport of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, and perhaps facilitate the development of atherosclerosis in hypertriglyceridemic individuals, we used in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to determine whether VLDL receptor mRNA and protein was expressed in human vascular tissue. We observed expression of the receptor by both endothelial and smooth muscle cells within normal arteries and veins, as well as within atherosclerotic plaques. In the latter, the VLDL receptor was also expressed by macrophage-derived foam cells. The widespread distribution of the VLDL receptor in vascular tissue suggests a potentially important role for this receptor in normal and pathophysiological vascular processes.

Abstract

We present final results from the first phase of the EROS search for gravitational microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds by unseen deflectors (machos: MAssive Compact Halo Objects). The search is sensitive to events with time scales between 15 minutes and 200 days corresponding to deflector masses in the range 1.e-7 to a few solar masses. Two events were observed that are compatible with microlensing by objects of mass of about 0.1 Mo. By comparing the results with the expected number of events for various models of the Galaxy, we conclude that machos in the mass range [1.e-7, 0.02] Mo make up less than 20% (95% C.L.) of the Halo dark matter., 4 pages, 3 Postscript figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

We present optical spectra of the peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 1999ac. The data extend from -15 to +42 days with respect to B-band maximum and reveal an event that is unusual in several respects. Prior to B-band maximum, the spectra resemble those of SN 1999aa, a slowly declining event, but possess stronger SiII and CaII signatures (more characteristic of a spectroscopically normal SN). Spectra after B-band maximum appear more normal. The expansion velocities inferred from the Iron lines appear to be lower than average; whereas, the expansion velocity inferred from Calcium H and K are higher than average. The expansion velocities inferred from SiII are among the slowest ever observed, though SN 1999ac is not particularly dim. The analysis of the parameters v_10, R(SiII), dv(SiII)/dt, and d_m15 further underlines the unique characteristics of SN 1999ac. We find convincing evidence of CII 6580 in the day -15 spectrum with ejection velocity v > 16,000 km/s, but this signature disappears by day -9. Abstract

We present the type Ia rate measurement based on two EROS supernova search campaigns (in 1999 and 2000). Sixteen supernovae identified as type Ia were discovered. The measurement of the detection efficiency, using a Monte Carlo simulation, provides the type Ia supernova explosion rate at a redshift ~ 0.13. The result is $0.125^{+0.044+0.028}_{-0.034-0.028} h_{70}^2$ SNu where 1 SNu = 1 SN / $10^{10} L_{sun}^B$ / century. This value is compatible with the previous EROS measurement (Hardin et al. 2000), done with a much smaller sample, at a similar redshift. Abstract

We present an extensive new time-series of spectroscopic data of the peculiar SN 1999aa in NGC 2595. Our data set includes 25 optical spectra between -11 and +58 days with respect to B-band maximum light, providing an unusually complete time history. The early spectra resemble those of a SN 1991T-like object but with a relatively strong Ca H&K absorption feature. The first clear sign of Si II 6355, characteristic of Type Ia supernovae, is found at day -7 and its velocity remains constant up to at least the first month after B-band maximum light. The transition to normal-looking spectra is found to occur earlier than in SN 1991T suggesting SN 1999aa as a possible link between SN 1991T-like and Branch-normal supernovae. Comparing the observations with synthetic spectra, doubly ionized Fe, Si and Ni are identified at early epochs. These are characteristic of SN 1991T-like objects. Furthermore, in the day -11 spectrum, evidence is found for an absorption feature which could be identified as high velocity C II 6580 or H-alpha. At the same epoch C III 4648.8 at photospheric velocity is probably responsible for the absorption feature at 4500 A. High velocity Ca is found around maximum light together with Si II and Fe II confined in a narrow velocity window. Abstract

We report the first astrometrically determined mass of an extrasolar planet, a companion previously detected by Doppler spectroscopy. Radial velocities first provided an ephemeris with which to schedule a significant fraction of the {\it HST} observations near companion peri- and apastron. The astrometry residuals at these orbital phases exhibit a systematic deviation consistent with a perturbation due to a planetary mass companion. Combining {\it HST} astrometry with radial velocities, we solve for the proper motion, parallax, perturbation size, inclination, and position angle of the line of nodes, while constraining period, velocity amplitude, longitude of periastron, and eccentricity to values determined from radial velocities. We find a perturbation semi-major axis and inclination, $\alpha$ = 0.25 $\pm$ 0.06 mas, $i$ = 84\arcdeg $\pm$6\arcdeg, and Gl 876 absolute parallax, $\pi_{abs}= 214.6 \pm$ 0.2 mas. Assuming that the mass of the primary star is $M_* = 0.32M_{\sun}$, we find the mass of the planet, Gl 876b, $M_b = 1.89\pm0.34M_{Jup}$., Comment: to appear in ApJ Letters, 20 December 2002

Abstract

We are conducting a 377-square-degree proper motion survey in the ~V and I bands in order to determine the cool white dwarf contribution to the Galactic dark matter. Using the 250 square degrees for which we possess three epochs, and applying selection criteria designed to isolate halo-type objects, we find no candidates in a 5500 pc^3 effective volume for old, fast M_V=17 white dwarfs. We check the detection efficiency by cross-matching our catalogue with Luyten's NLTT catalogue. The halo white dwarf contribution cannot exceed 5% (95% C.L.) for objects with M_V=17 and 1
