We describe the evolution of of Swift J1644+57, whose unique X-ray properties have led several groups to interpret its behavior as corresponding to an extraordinary event of tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole in the nucleus of a (z = 0.3545) galaxy, as derived by GTC. Multiwavelength observations (X-rays, optical, millimetre, centimitre) are proving to be essential to reveal the long term nature of the emission in this source. In particular, we identify for the first time the properties of a forming relativistic jet. In our interpretation of the phenomenon, we leave the still open possibility that it may correspond to the onset of a dormant AGN, but this may only be tested with longer term X-ray, millimetre and centimetre monitoring.

We have investigated particle acceleration and shock structure associated with an unmagnetized relativistic jet propagating into an unmagnetized plasma for electron-positron and electron-ion plasmas. Strong magnetic fields generated in the trailing jet shock lead to transverse deflection and acceleration of the electrons. We have self-consistently calculated the radiation from the electrons accelerated in the turbulent magnetic fields for different jet Lorentz factors. We find that the synthetic spectra depend on the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet, the jet temperature, and the strength of the magnetic fields generated in the shock. We have investigated the generation of magnetic fields associated with velocity shear between an unmagnetized relativistic (core) jet and an unmagnetized sheath plasma. We discuss particle acceleration in collimation shocks for AGN jets formed by relativistic MHD simulations. Our calculated spectra should lead to a better understanding of the complex time evolution and/or spectral structure from gamma-ray bursts, relativistic jets, and supernova remnants.

Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,active [galaxies] ,Astrophysics::Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics ,individual (BL Lacertae = VER J2202+422) [BL Lacertae objects] - Abstract
Combined with measurements made by very-long-baseline interferometry, the observations of fast TeV gamma-ray flares probe the structure and emission mechanism of blazar jets. However, only a handful of such flares have been detected to date, and only within the last few years have these flares been observed from lower-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects and flat-spectrum radio quasars. We report on a fast TeV gamma-ray flare from the blazar BL Lacertae observed by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). with a rise time of ∼2.3 hr and a decay time of ∼36 min. The peak flux above 200 GeV is (4.2 ± 0.6) ×10-6 photon m-2 s-1 measured with a 4-minute-binned light curve, corresponding to ∼180% of the flux that is observed from the Crab Nebula above the same energy threshold. Variability contemporaneous with the TeV gamma-ray flare was observed in GeV gamma-ray, X-ray, and optical flux, as well as in optical and radio polarization. Additionally, a possible moving emission feature with superluminal apparent velocity was identified in Very Long Baseline Array observations at 43 GHz, potentially passing the radio core of the jet around the time of the gamma-ray flare. We discuss the constraints on the size, Lorentz factor, and location of the emitting region of the flare, and the interpretations with several theoretical models that invoke relativistic plasma passing stationary shocks.

We present multi-wavelength studies of the blazar CTA102 and the radio galaxy 3C120 during bright gamma-ray flares for both sources. The Fermi Large Area Telescope registered in September-October 2012 an extraordinary bright gamma-ray outburst in the quasar CTA102, and between December 2012 and October 2014 a prolonged gamma-ray activity in the radio galaxy 3C120. In both studies the analysis of Fermi data has been compared with a series of 43 GHz VLBA images from the VLBA-BU-BLAZAR program, providing the necessary spatial resolution to probe the parsec scale jet evolution during the high energy events. In the case of 3C120, in order to extend the observing period covered by radio data, we also used 15 GHz VLBA data from the MOJAVE sample. Although these two objects represent very different classes of AGN, we found they have similar properties during the gamma-ray events. The gamma-ray flares are associated with the passage of a new superluminal knot through the mm VLBI core, but not all ejections of new components lead to gamma-ray events and components responsible for the gamma-ray emission are not necessary bright components. Both in CTA102 and in 3C120, gamma-ray events occurred only when the new components are moving in a direction closer to our line of sight. We locate the gamma- ray dissipation zone a short distance downstream of the radio core but outside of the broad line region, suggesting synchrotron self-Compton scattering as the probable mechanism for the gamma-ray production.

individual: 3C 279 [Quasars] ,active [Galaxies] ,Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Polarization ,jets [Galaxies] - Abstract
Context. Over the past few years, on several occasions, large, continuous rotations of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of linearly polarized optical emission from blazars have been reported. These events are often coincident with high energy γ-ray flares and they have attracted considerable attention, since they could allow us to probe the magnetic field structure in the γ-ray emitting region of the jet. The flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 is one of the most prominent examples showing this behaviour. Aims. Our goal is to study the observed EVPA rotations and to distinguish between a stochastic and a deterministic origin of the polarization variability. Methods. We have combined multiple data sets of R-band photometry and optical polarimetry measurements of 3C 279, yielding exceptionally well-sampled flux density and polarization curves that cover a period of 2008-2012. Several large EVPA rotations are identified in the data. We introduce a quantitative measure for the EVPA curve smoothness, which is then used to test a set of simple random walk polarization variability models against the data. Results. 3C 279 shows different polarization variation characteristics during an optical low-flux state and a flaring state. The polarization variation during the flaring state, especially the smooth ∼360° rotation of the EVPA in mid-2011, is not consistent with the tested stochastic processes. Conclusions. We conclude that, during the two different optical flux states, two different processes govern polarization variation, which is possibly a stochastic process during the low-brightness state and a deterministic process during the flaring activity.

- Abstract
Adding VLBI capability to the SKA arrays will greatly broaden the science of the SKA, and is feasible within the current specifications. SKA-VLBI can be initially implemented by providing phased-array outputs for SKA1-MID and SKA1-SUR and using these extremely sensitive stations with other radio telescopes, and in SKA2 by realising a distributed configuration providing baselines up to thousands of km, merging it with existing VLBI networks. The motivation for and the possible realization of SKA-VLBI is described in this paper.

NRAO 150 is a very bright millimeter to radio quasar at redshift z=1.52 for which ultra-highresolution VLBI monitoring has revealed a counter-clockwise jet-position-angle wobbling at an angular speed ~11°/yr in the innermost regions of the jet. In this paper we present new total and linearly polarized VLBA images at 43 GHz extending previous studies to cover the evolution of the jet in NRAO 150 between 2006 and early 2009. We propose a new scenario to explain the counter-clockwise rotation of the jet position angle based on a helical motion of the components in a jet viewed faced-on. This alternative scenario is compatible with the interpretation suggested in previous works once the indetermination of the absolute position of the self-calibrated VLBI images is taken into account. Fitting of the jet components motion to a simple internal rotation kinematical model shows that this scenario is a likely alternative explanation for the behavior of the innermost regions in the jet of NRAO 150.

The preparation procedure, an undefined notion in quantum theory, has not had the relevance that it deserves in the interpretation of quantum mechanical formalism. Here we utilize the concepts of identical and similar preparation procedures to show the conceptual differences and mutual interconnections between the statistical and the conventional interpretation of quantum formalism. Although the statistical understanding, and its final logical consequence, hidden variables theories (this connexion being explained in the text), have a great intuitive appeal due to its fewer ontological difficulties, both recent experimental results and some theoretical developments seem to support an epistemic alternative closer to the conventional one. Nevertheless, we must not rule out the possibility that new theorems or new explanatory principles may modify the reigning supremacy of this interpretation., Comment: Updated version. 12 pages, 2 figures
