With the wide adoption of AI applications, there is a pressing need of enabling real-time neural network (NN) inference on small embedded devices, but deploying NNs and achieving high performance of NN inference on these small devices is challenging due to their extremely weak capabilities. Although NN partitioning and offloading can contribute to such deployment, they are incapable of minimizing the local costs at embedded devices. Instead, we suggest to address this challenge via agile NN offloading, which migrates the required computations in NN offloading from online inference to offline learning. In this paper, we present AgileNN, a new NN offloading technique that achieves real-time NN inference on weak embedded devices by leveraging eXplainable AI techniques, so as to explicitly enforce feature sparsity during the training phase and minimize the online computation and communication costs. Experiment results show that AgileNN's inference latency is >6x lower than the existing schemes, ensuring that sensory data on embedded devices can be timely consumed. On-device training is essential for neural networks (NNs) to continuously adapt to new online data, but can be time-consuming due to the device's limited computing power. To speed up on-device training, existing schemes select trainable NN portion offline or conduct unrecoverable selection at runtime, but the evolution of trainable NN portion is constrained and cannot adapt to the current need for training. Instead, runtime adaptation of on-device training should be fully elastic, i.e., every NN substructure can be freely removed from or added to the trainable NN portion at any time in training. In this paper, we present ElasticTrainer, a new technique that enforces such elasticity to achieve the required training speedup with the minimum NN accuracy loss. Large Language Models (LLMs) are capable of reasoning over diverse input data modalities through pre-trained encoders. However, the growing diversity of input data modalities prevents incorporating all modalities into LLMs, especially when LLMs are deployed on resource-constrained edge devices for embodied AI applications. Instead, a better option is to adaptively involve only the useful modalities at runtime, depending on the current environmental contexts and task requirements. For such modality adaptation, existing work adopts fixed connections between encoders and the LLM's input layer, leading to high training cost at runtime and ineffective cross-modal interaction. In this paper, we address these limitations by presenting mPnP-LLM, a new technique that allows fully elastic, automated and prompt runtime modality adaptation, by connecting unimodal encoders to a flexible set of last LLM blocks and making such latent connections fully trainable at runtime. Experiments over the nuScenes-QA dataset show that mPnP-LLM can achieve up to 3.7x FLOPs reduction and 30% GPU memory usage reduction, while retaining on-par accuracy with the existing schemes. Under the same compute budget, mPnP-LLM improves the task accuracy by up to 4% compared to the best existing scheme.

Weakly supervised point cloud semantic segmentation has attracted a lot of attention due to its ability to alleviate the heavy reliance on fine-grained annotations of point clouds. However, in practice, sparse annotation usually exhibits a distinct non-uniform distribution in point cloud, which poses challenges for weak supervision. To address these issues, we propose an adaptive annotation distribution method for weakly supervised point cloud semantic segmentation. Specifically, we introduce the probability density function into the gradient sampling approximation analysis and investigate the impact of sparse annotations distributions. Based on our analysis, we propose a label-aware point cloud downsampling strategy to increase the proportion of annotations involved in the training stage. Furthermore, we design the multiplicative dynamic entropy as the gradient calibration function to mitigate the gradient bias caused by non-uniformly distributed sparse annotations and explicitly reduce the epistemic uncertainty. Without any prior restrictions and additional information, our proposed method achieves comprehensive performance improvements at multiple label rates with different annotation distributions on S3DIS, ScanNetV2 and SemanticKITTI.

To satisfy the high-resolution requirements of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, conventional deep neural network (DNN)-based methods using grid idea need to significantly increase the number of output classifications and also produce a huge high model complexity. To address this problem, a multi-level tree-based DNN model (TDNN) is proposed as an alternative, where each level takes small-scale multi-layer neural networks (MLNNs) as nodes to divide the target angular interval into multiple sub-intervals, and each output class is associated to a MLNN at the next level. Then the number of MLNNs is gradually increasing from the first level to the last level, and so increasing the depth of tree will dramatically raise the number of output classes to improve the estimation accuracy. More importantly, this network is extended to make a multi-emitter DOA estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed TDNN performs much better than conventional DNN and root-MUSIC at extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and can achieve Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Additionally, in the multi-emitter scenario, the proposed Q-TDNN has also made a substantial performance enhancement over DNN and Root-MUSIC, and this gain grows as the number of emitters increases.

In recent years, we witness the explosion of false and unconfirmed information (i.e., rumors) that went viral on social media and shocked the public. Rumors can trigger versatile, mostly controversial stance expressions among social media users. Rumor verification and stance detection are different yet relevant tasks. Fake news debunking primarily focuses on determining the truthfulness of news articles, which oversimplifies the issue as fake news often combines elements of both truth and falsehood. Thus, it becomes crucial to identify specific instances of misinformation within the articles. In this research, we investigate a novel task in the field of fake news debunking, which involves detecting sentence-level misinformation. One of the major challenges in this task is the absence of a training dataset with sentence-level annotations regarding veracity. Inspired by the Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) approach, we propose a model called Weakly Supervised Detection of Misinforming Sentences (WSDMS). This model only requires bag-level labels for training but is capable of inferring both sentence-level misinformation and article-level veracity, aided by relevant social media conversations that are attentively contextualized with news sentences. We evaluate WSDMS on three real-world benchmarks and demonstrate that it outperforms existing state-of-the-art baselines in debunking fake news at both the sentence and article levels.

This study enhances stance detection on social media by incorporating deeper psychological attributes, specifically individuals' moral foundations. These theoretically-derived dimensions aim to provide a comprehensive profile of an individual's moral concerns which, in recent work, has been linked to behaviour in a range of domains, including society, politics, health, and the environment. In this paper, we investigate how moral foundation dimensions can contribute to predicting an individual's stance on a given target. Specifically we incorporate moral foundation features extracted from text, along with message semantic features, to classify stances at both message- and user-levels using both traditional machine learning models and large language models. Our preliminary results suggest that encoding moral foundations can enhance the performance of stance detection tasks and help illuminate the associations between specific moral foundations and online stances on target topics. The results highlight the importance of considering deeper psychological attributes in stance analysis and underscores the role of moral foundations in guiding online social behavior., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures
