BACKGROUND Elevated CO2 can directly affect the toxicity of insecticides to insects and the physiological response of insects to insecticides. Frankliniella occidentalis and F. intonsa are highly destructive pests that target horticultural crops. Spinetoram is an effective pesticide against thrips. This study sought to explore the effect of elevated CO2 on efficacy of spinetoram against F. occidentalis and F. intonsa and effect of the spinetoram on activities of protective and detoxifying enzymes under elevated CO2. Notably, these enzymes can be exploited in further studies to develop interventions for thrips resistance management. RESULTS: Toxicity bioassay showed that the LC50 values of F. occidentalis and F. intonsa exposed to spinetoram at elevated CO2 (800 μL L−1 concentration) for 48 h was 0.08 and 0.006 mg L−1, respectively, which is 0.62 and 0.75 times of the values at ambient CO2 (400 μL L−1 concentration). The findings showed that elevated CO2 decreased activities of the superoxide dismutase and acetylcholinesterase in thrips, while increasing the activities of carboxylesterase and glutathione S‐transferase. However, spinetoram increased activities of protective and detoxifying enzymes in both thrips under the two CO2 levels. Elevated CO2 and spinetoram affect the physiological enzyme activity in thrips synergistically, and the activities of analyzed enzymes were generally higher in F. occidentalis than in F. intonsa. CONCLUSION: Elevated CO2 amplifies the efficacy of spinetoram on thrips, F. intonsa is more susceptibility to spinetoram than F. occidentalis and the latter showed better adaptation to adverse conditions than the former. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry. To describe the perceived participation and assess its determinants among young and middle-aged stroke patients following acute care one month after discharge in mainland China. Two hundred and twenty-three patients were consecutively recruited from two tertiary hospitals and were followed up 1 month after discharge in the outpatient department or their communities to assess their participation by using the Impact on Participation and Autonomy Questionnaire, with 23 patients lost to follow-up. Determinants (i.e., sociodemographic, diseased-related, physical, psychological, and social factors) of participation were identified in four domains: indoor autonomy; outdoor autonomy; family role; and social life. The overall perceived participation of our respondents was good to fair. Forty-six (23.0%), 32 (16.0%), 13 (6.5%), and 19 (9.5%) perceived their participation as "very good" in the domains of indoor autonomy, family role, outdoor autonomy and social life, respectively. Stroke severity, depressive symptoms, and social support were the common determinants of participation for all the domains, with stroke severity being the strongest correlate. Activities of daily living was associated with indoor autonomy, family role, and outdoor autonomy, but not associated with social life. The perceived participation of our respondents is relatively optimistic. Physical health along with mental and social status can affect participation. Tailored strategies should be implemented early in the rehabilitation phase to promote stoke survivors' participation in all the domains. Although the overall perceived participation of young and middle-aged stroke patients was fair to good, attention should be paid to their family roles. The strategies should be mainly focused on reducing the stroke severity to improve patients' participation. Background: The potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is a worldwide pest that feeds on both the leaves and tubers of potato plants. PTM larvae can digest leaves, or tubers, resulting in serious damage to potato plants in the field and potato tubers in storage. To understand how midgut bacterial diversity is influenced by the consumption of these two tissue types, the symbiotic bacteria in the potato-feeding PTM midgut and the endophytic bacteria of potato tissues were analyzed. Results: At the genus level, the bacterial community composition in the PTM midgut was influenced by the tissues consumed, owing to their different nutrient contents. Escherichia_Shigella and Enterobacter were the most dominant genera in the midgut of leaf-feeding and tuber-feeding PTMs, respectively. Interestingly, even though only present in low abundance in leaves and tubers, Escherichia_Shigella were dominantly distributed only in the midgut of leaf-feeding PTMs, indicating that specific accumulation of these genera have occurred by feeding on leaves. Moreover, Enterobacter, the most dominant genus in the midgut of tuber-feeding PTMs, was undetectable in all potato tissues, indicating it is gut-specific origin and tuber feeding-specific accumulation. Both Escherichia_Shigella and Enterobacter abundances were positively correlated with the dominant contents of potato leaves and tubers, respectively. Conclusions: Enrichment of specific PTM midgut bacterial communities was related to different nutrient levels in different tissues consumed by the insect, which in turn influenced host utilization. We provide evidence that a portion of the intestinal microbes of PTMs may be derived from potato endophytic bacteria and improve the understanding of the relationship between potato endophytic bacteria and the gut microbiota of PTMs, which may offer support for integrated management of this worldwide pest. The Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, is a serious pest and is widely distributed in corn-producing regions throughout China. This insect enters facultative diapause as fully grown larvae in response to short day lengths. Here, we evaluate the changes in diapause incidence and critical day length (CDL) by crossing a tropical strain with five subtropical and temperate strains from a 2897-km latitudinal gradient to investigate the latitudinal variations in diapause induction and CDL and their heredity. Photoperiodic responses of diapause induction in the different geographical strains at different temperatures showed that diapause incidence and CDL increased with increasing latitude and decreased with increasing temperature. Similarly, diapause incidence and CDL for the hybrid strains also showed an increase with increasing latitude or decreasing temperature. Conversely, the diapause incidences were significantly lower and the CDLs were significantly shorter in hybrid strains than their parents with high diapause incidence. Furthermore, the males had significantly more influence than the females on the incidence of diapause in subsequent progeny. Diapause incidence and CDL in O. furnacalis are strikingly different among pure strains and hybrid strains. The photoperiodic response controlling diapause is strongly heritable, with diapause being a partial dominant character over nondiapause, with the incidence of diapause mainly determined by the male parent. These results can help us to predict the time course of diapause induction in nature and may provide a genetic means for pest management by providing information on the overwintering capabilities of the hybrids. This paper presents the first report of the occurrence of the pinion-streaked snout Schrankia costaestrigalis (Stephens, 1834) in China and the first known record of this pest's damage to potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the world. This discovery allowed us to alert entomologists and farmers, as well as agricultural agencies, and to provide a diagnostic tool to prevent potential establishment and spread of this newly introduced species in the potato-growing region of China and worldwide over the next few years.
