The site of Jebel Moya, situated in the center of the southern Gezira Plain in southcentral Sudan, has an occupational sequence spanning at least five millennia until around 2000 years ago. Renewed excavation is shedding new light on its occupational chronology and socioeconomic history, including activities such as burial, savanna herding, and domesticated sorghum cultivation practices dating to at least the mid-third millennium BC. In the present study, predominantly final phase pottery sherds from the first millennium BC to the start of the first millennium AD (Assemblage 3) have been analyzed via a combination of thin section petrography and instrumental geochemistry to determine their raw materials and place of manufacture and reconstruct their manufacturing technology. Organic residue analysis was also conducted to identify the products processed within vessels found at the site. The results suggest the existence of a well-developed local ceramic craft tradition that persisted for over one thousand years. Pots from Assemblage 3 were used to process, store, and consume animal and plant products, thus reinforcing emerging evidence for early agro-pastoral activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New stalagmites from Qadisha Cave (Lebanon) located at 1720 m above sea level provide a high-resolution and well-dated record for northern Mount Lebanon. The stalagmites grew discontinuously from 9.2 to 5.7 and at 3.5 ka, and they show a tendency to move from a more negative oxygen isotope signal at ~9.1 ka to a more positive signal at ~5.8 ka. Such a trend reflects a change from a wetter to a drier climate at high altitudes. The δ13C signal shows rapid shifts throughout the record and a decreasing trend toward more negative values in the mid-Holocene, suggesting enhanced soil activity. In the short-term trend, Qadisha stalagmites record rapid dry/wet changes on centennial scales, with a tendency to more rapid dry events toward the mid-Holocene. Such changes are characterized by overall good agreement between both geochemical proxies and stalagmite growth and might be affected by the seasonal variations in snow cover. The Qadisha record is in good agreement with other Levantine records, showing more humid conditions from 9 to 7 ka. After 7 ka, a drier climate seems to affect sites at both low- and high-altitude areas. The Qadisha record reflects uniquely mountainous climate characteristics compared with other records, specifically the effect of snow cover and its duration regulating the effective infiltration. Three variably old groups of banded iron formation (BIF) are known in the Kostomuksha Greenstone Belt (KGB) of the Karelian Craton. This paper deals with the earliest of them, Mesoarchean (2.87–2.81 Ga) BIF-1. BIF-1 occurs among the komatiite–basalt unit of the KGB. BIF-1 consists mainly of quartz and magnetite, with varying amounts of amphibole, biotite, and garnet; the variations of SiO2 (48.3–58.6 wt %) and (21.34–33.82 wt %) suggest that the rocks are BIF. BIF-1 of the KGB, as well as most Archean BIFs, contain high concentration, display a contrasting positive Eu anomaly, lack of Ce anomaly, and the depletion of LREE relative to HREE. However, they differ from other BIFs in the higher Al2O3, TiO2, MgO, K2O, Cr, Ni, Zr, Ba, Cu and Zn concentrations. BIF-1 was formed in a marine basin at an anoxic atmosphere due to hydrothermal fluids, the proportion of which varies from 20 to 80%, and a terrigenous component derived mainly from basalts, komatiites, and dacites of host rocks. Mesoarchean BIF-1 of the KGB was accumulated in a small rift structures within an oceanic volcanic plateau, the formation of which is associated with the influence of a mantle plume on the oceanic lithosphere. The Bam area is located north of the Kerman magmatic copper belt (KMCB) in SE Iran. It belongs to the Urumieh-Dothtar magmatic assemblage (UDMA) that hosts many large Cu-porphyry deposits such as Sarchemeh, Iju, Meiduk, Pakram, and Dalli. The area comprises volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of the Eocene intruded by some sub-volcanic patches. Geochemical analyses show that the sub-volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline granodiorites formed on an active continental margin. The rare earth elements (REE) distribution patterns are differentiated (LaN/YbN = 4–31), having weak to moderate Eu negative anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.4–0.8) and flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) sections. The MgO, SiO2, La, Yb, Sr, Sm, and Y contents of these rocks are consistent with adakite-like magmas formed by partial melting of thickened lower crust containing no garnet. Negative correlations of Al2O3, Y and Ba with SiO2 and moderate to weak Eu negative anomalies, indicate the role of hornblende, K-feldspar, and plagioclase fractionation in the formation of these rocks. Geochemical features of the Bam sub-volcanic rocks are similar to those of the Cu-porphyry deposits from UDMA and Malmyzh deposit from eastern Russia, indicating fertility of these rocks for Cu mineralization that should be considered in the future explorations. Halophytic plant communities have developed on exposed coastal landforms to form low-stature turf in several locations around New Zealand. We quantify the inorganic geochemistry, mineralogy and simulated ephemeral surface water composition of saline soil-free bare ground at a well-preserved site at Maori Head on Otago Peninsula, where halophytes have colonised from adjacent coastal turf. The community at this site is dominated by Leptinella dioica, Samolus repens, Disphyma australe and Selliera radicans. Maori Head substrates are dominated by clay-altered basalt colluvium and show a general trend from high electrical conductivity (EC > 10 mS/cm) and weakly acid pH (< 6) on bare ground to low EC (< 1 mS cm−1) and higher pH (> 7) in turf and adjacent pasture soils. High salinities on dry substrates and in simulated ephemeral surface waters result from surface evaporation of airborne sea spray and contain halite (NaCl) with some gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O). Chemical interactions with the substrate are minor. The high surface salinities were maintained despite a major winter rain event with strong onshore winds. However, surface salinity is frequently leached by rain and shallow groundwater, whereas inland saline sites (pH 8–11) have substantial salt accumulations driven by lower rainfall, high evaporation and chemical interaction with Otago Schist-derived substrates. The Lord Howe Volcanic Complex (LHVC) is part of a seamount chain associated with the detached continental crust of Zealandia. We present petrographic and geochemical data for the LHVC, including the first reported data for Balls Pyramid and the first trace element data for Lord Howe Island, clarifying the tectonic affiliation and general mantle source characteristics. Classification and discrimination diagrams based on concentrations and ratios of immobile elements, such as rare earth and high field strength elements, Th, Ti, Y, and Mg, show the LHVC comprises transitional to alkali basalts and at least two, and probably three, shield building complexes, consistent with an intraplate tectonic setting. Primitive-mantle normalised trace element patterns, variation in Dy/Yb for a restricted range of Dy/Dy*, Zr/Yb > 90, and variations in Zr/Hf and P2O5/TiO2 through the eruptive sequences indicate the mantle source may be a laterally heterogeneous enriched garnet peridotite that has undergone varying degrees of partial melting and carbonatitic metasomatism, both within the LHVC and along the Lord Howe Seamount Chain. The LHVC is thus an ideal natural laboratory for probing the probability of small intraplate volcanic fields originating via mantle plumes or from previously subducted slabs stagnating at the mantle transition zone. The Mengshan pluton provides an opportunity for studying the tectonic setting of the Indosinian orogeny and crustal evolution within the South China Block (SCB). Zircon laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb dating shows that the Mengshan pluton is mainly composed of medium- to coarse-grained porphyritic biotite granite, fine-grained porphyritic biotite granite, and medium- to fine-grained monzogranite from the middle–late Indosinian period. They have the characteristics of high-silica I-type granites: high SiO2 content, low Zr + Ce + Nb + Y and 10,000Ga/Al values, low A/CNK (molar ratio Al 2 O 3 / (CaO + Na 2 O + K 2 O) ) ratios, and relatively high whole-rock zircon saturation temperatures. During magmatic evolution, the crystallization differentiation process occurred, with potassium feldspar and plagioclase as the main minerals and apatite, allanite, and monazite as accessory minerals. The Mengshan pluton originated from a pelitic-rich source, with high Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios and variable CaO/Na2O and Al2O3/TiO2 ratios. The characteristics of low initial 87Sr/86Sr values and ancient two-stage model ages of Nd isotopes but relatively depleted εHf(t) values indicate that the genesis of the Mengshan pluton is related to the underplating of basic magma into the Mesoproterozoic crust. Combining these characterisrtics with different tectonic-magmatic activities in the southeastern coast and the southwestern inland, we believe that the Indosinian orogeny is controlled by multiple tectonic domains: the Paleo-Pacific subduction zone, the collision belts between the Indosinian Block and the SCB, and the collision belts between the SCB and the North China Block. The Indosinian Lu-Hf isotope data of igneous rocks in the SCB show that the εHf(t) values gradually increased over time, which reveals that crustal evolution is dominated by crustal thickening due to tectonic compression (major) and crustal growth in regional deep faults (minor). The Bayan-Uul porphyry Au-Cu-(Mo) deposit occurs within the Mongol–Okhotsk Orogenic Belt, which is a part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. To understand geotectonic, petrogenesis, mineralization, and ore-forming fluid evolution of the Bayan-Uul deposit, we report petrographic and geochemical analyses of host rocks, mineralogy of ores, and fluid inclusion characteristics. Based on petrographic and mineralogical analyses, Cu, Mo, and Au mineralization occurs as disseminated and sulfide-bearing quartz–tourmaline veins hosted within granodiorites, monzodiorites, and diorite porphyry and tourmaline breccia. Four main alteration assemblages are identified: potassic, phyllic, argillic, and quartz–tourmaline alteration. The ore mineralogy of quartz–tourmaline veinlets are classified into A-type veinlets (quartz + tourmaline + chalcopyrite + magnetite + pyrite ± electrum), B-type veinlets (quartz + tourmaline + molybdenum + chalcopyrite + pyrite), and C-type veinlets (quartz + tourmaline + pyrite ± chalcopyrite). Fluid inclusions are found in quartz–tourmaline veinlets consisting mainly of liquid-rich two-phase (L-type), vapor-rich two-phase (V-type), and solid-bearing multi-phase (S-type) inclusions. The homogenization temperatures for the fluid inclusions in A-type, B-type, and C-type veinlets range from 215 to 490°C, 215 to 500 °C, and 160 to 350 °C and their salinity varies from 5.4 to 43.5 wt.%, 16 to 51.1 wt.%, and 3.4 to 24.1 wt.% NaCl equivalent, respectively. Coexistance of (L-type), (V-type), and (S-type) inclusions support fluid boiling. The δ18O values of ore fluids from different mineralizing A-, B-, and C-type veins are 8.7‰, 10.9‰, and 8.4‰, respectively, and the δ34S values of sulfide minerals range from −1.4‰ to 5.3‰, which indicates magmatic origin. The Messejana–Plasencia great dyke (MPGD) is a Late Triassic tholeiitic gabbro intrusion related to the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. Its large outcrop extent (~530 km), combined with its prolongation below the Duero basin (additional 100 km), makes it one of the world's largest dykes known. We have studied felsic granophyric bodies appearing in its northernmost segment at different scales, from mm-sized (interstitial micrographic pockets) to felsic dykes of up to 10 m thick and 1.5 km long, intruding within the gabbros. Significant differences exist in the mineral and whole-rock composition of gabbros and granophyres, including the Sr–Nd isotopic ratios. The chemical variation in the gabbros is coherent with fractionation of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase at depth. However, the presence of a compositional gap between gabbros and granophyres (absence of intermediate compositions) and the formation of these late-stage intergranular felsic melts within the gabbro mesostasis suggest that they could be derived by liquid immiscibility. The Sr–Nd isotopic heterogeneity in the MPGD gabbros and the presence of zircons with Variscan ages (~286 Ma), inherited from granulitic rocks, indicate that the mafic magmas experienced some degree of lower crust assimilation during fractionation close to the Moho depth. On the contrary, the scarce xenocrystic Variscan zircon crystals found in a granophyric dyke within the MPGD gabbro display similar textures and ages (~299 Ma) to those of the country rock granites and point to contamination at a different crustal level. The Heshui area within the Ordos Basin holds significant strategic importance for the extraction and development of tight oil resources in the Changqing Oilfield. This study extensively explored the geochemical features and distribution tendencies of source rocks in the Chang 7 member, utilizing core samples and logging data for a comprehensive analysis. A more advanced model was utilized to predict the dispersion of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the Chang 7 member source rock. The properties and hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks were thoroughly assessed through a comprehensive analysis that involved evaluating their total organic carbon content, pyrolysis parameters, and reflectance (Ro) values. The research concluded that the source rocks boast substantial organic matter, predominantly categorized as type II-I organic material. The thermal maturation levels span from low maturity to maturity, signifying significant potential for oil generation. Generally, the source rock quality falls within the range of good to excellent. Sedimentary patterns notably influence the distribution of hydrocarbon-source rocks. The northeastern sector of the study area is situated in an area characterized by deep to semi-deep lake sedimentation, making it the primary location for the presence of Chang 7 member hydrocarbon source rocks. With a thickness ranging from 40 to 70 m, this zone becomes a pivotal focus for the potential exploration of tight oil resources in the future. The results of this study offer crucial insights for understanding the geochemical characteristics of hydrocarbon source rocks, evaluating their potential for hydrocarbon generation, and forecasting favorable zones for oil and gas exploration in similar regions. Mineral exploration has increasingly targeted areas covered by in situ or transported overburden for shallow to deep-seated orebodies. It remains critical to develop better means to detect the surficial chemical footprint of mineralized areas covered by thick regolith. In such settings, plant geochemistry could potentially be a useful exploration tool, as different plant species have varying degrees of tolerance to metal enrichment in the soil. This review provides insights into the geological and geochemical controls on metal accumulation patterns in soil–plant systems of the Central African Copperbelt. In addition, it highlights the opportunities for integrating the geochemistry of terrestrial plants in emerging exploration technologies, identifies research gaps, and suggests future directions for developing phytogeochemical sampling techniques. This review was conducted using reputable online scholarly databases targeting original research articles published between January 2005 and March 2023, from which selected articles were identified, screened, and used to explore current advances, opportunities, and future directions for the use of plant geochemistry in sediment hosted Cu–Co exploration in the Central African Copperbelt. Various plant species are recognized as ore deposit indicators through either independent phytogeochemistry or complementary approaches. In the Central African Copperbelt, the successful application of hyperaccumulator species for phytoremediation provides the basis for adopting phytogeochemistry in mineral exploration. Furthermore, current advances in remote sensing, machine learning, and deep learning techniques could enable multi-source data integration and allow for the integration of phytogeochemistry. Diamondiferous kimberlites occur in the Wafangdian area in the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC). In order to better constrain their magmatic source and emplacement time, we have investigated apatite from two kimberlites, i.e., the #110 dike kimberlite and the #50 root-zone kimberlite by measuring in situ their U–Pb and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. The crystallization ages of the #110 and #50 apatites are 460.9 ± 16.8 Ma and 455.4 ± 19.3 Ma, respectively. For the #50 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70453–0.70613 and εNd(t) = −2.74 to −4.52. For the #110 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70394–0.70478 and εNd(t) = −3.46 to −5.65. Based on the similar distribution patterns of the rare earth elements (REEs) and the similar Sr-Nd isotope compositions of the apatite, it is believed that the #110 and #50 kimberlites have the same source region and the kimberlite magmas in Wafangdian were derived from an enriched mantle source (EMI). The primary magmatic composition has little effect on the emplacement pattern. It is more likely that the geological environment played an important role in controlling the retention and removal of volatile components (H2O and CO2). This led to the different evolutionary paths of the kimberlite magma in the later period, resulting in differences in the major element compositions of the apatite. High Sr concentrations may be associated with hydrothermal (H2O-rich fluid) overprinting events in the later magmatic period; the higher light rare earth element (LREE) concentration of the #50 apatite reflects the involvement of the REE3+ + SiO44− ⇔ Ca2+ + PO43− replacement mechanism. Two emplacement patterns of the #110 dike kimberlite (#110 apatite, low Sr, and high Si) and the #50 root-zone (#50 apatite, high Sr, and low Si) kimberlites were identified via major element analysis of the #110 apatite and #50 apatite. Owing to the paucity of research on synchronous mafic rocks in the Tarim Basin, the late Paleozoic–early Mesozoic tectonic development of this region is not well defined. The Halaqi region is situated on Tarim's northwest edge, and numerous mafic dikes can be found cross-cutting the Permian strata. The whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb age, and Sr–Nd isotopic signature of these mafic rocks have never been reported before, and this contribution can offer geochronological and petrogenetic investigations that provide fresh insight into the geodynamic development of the area. Major oxide contents in the Halaqi mafic rocks vary, including SiO2 (45.74–50.31 wt.%), Al2O3 (13.28–14.8 wt.%), FeOT (16.48–19.19 wt.%), MgO (7.58–10.32 wt.%), CaO (7.19–12.39 wt.%), Na2O (2.97–4.50 wt.%), K2O (0.24–0.63 wt.%), TiO2 (1.11–1.29 wt.%), MnO (0.14–0.16 wt.%), and P2O5 (0.13–0.17 wt.%). The mafic rocks are enriched in high-field-strength elements (e.g., Zr and Hf) and large-ion lithophile elements (e.g., Sr, Th, and U) but depleted in Nb, Ta, and P. The total REEs in the rocks are lower (ΣREE = 72.80–86.85 ppm), and HREEs are somewhat depleted in comparison to LREEs, with positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 1.05–1.17) but weak negative Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.91–0.93). Zircon U–Pb ages of 201–247 Ma were obtained from a total of 18 magmatic zircon grains found in the mafic rocks that were studied. These results point to a middle-to-late Triassic emplacement. The mafic dikes exhibit somewhat enriched Nd isotopic compositions (εNd(t) = –1.6~–0.2) and an older Nd model age (TDM = 1.24–1.37 Ga). The Halaqi middle–late Triassic mafic dikes are thought to have originated from the same tectonic background as the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province, along with similar geochemical and isotopic compositions. This suggests that they are all products of the interaction between asthenospheric and lithospheric mantles in an intraplate extensional environment. Research indicates that the Triassic mafic magmatism in northwest Tarim could be the product of the continuous thermal pulse of the Tarim mantle plume and be a part of the Tarim LIP. The Three Rivers Lateral Collision Zone (TRLCZ), situated at the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, is a crucial frontier where materials from the plateau flow southeastward. This study extensively investigated the hydrochemical characteristics and origin of helium and carbon isotopes in 73 thermal springs within the TRLCZ. The analysis revealed dominant processes, including carbonate and silicate interactions, resulting in elevated concentrations of HCO3− and Na+. The impact of Ca/Mg-rich minerals, particularly dolomite, influenced the cation composition. Additionally, gypsum dissolution, notably in the Lancangjiang Fault and Weixi–Qiaohou Fault, was highlighted through Ca/SO4 ratios. The positive correlation between SO42− and Cl− indicated dilution by shallow cold water, explaining the lower SO42− content in the Jingshajiang–Zhongdian Fault and Nujiang Fault compared to the Weixi–Qiaohou Fault and Lancangjiang Fault. The circulation depth of thermal spring water varied, with the northern Weixi–Qiaohou Fault exhibiting the shallowest circulation depth (~3 km), while the Jingshajiang–Zhongdian Fault and southern segments of the Nujiang Fault displayed deeper depths—ranging from 4 to 7 km. A positive correlation between the circulation depth and fault activity was also observed. The Rc/Ra ratios of free gas samples, predominantly indicating crustal origin, varied from 0.01 Ra to 0.53 Ra. Elevated Rc/Ra ratios in the research area suggested potential minor additions of mantle helium through faults and fractures. Crustal limestone was identified as the primary source of CO2-rich samples, with δ13CCO2 values ranging from −1.6‰ to −7.2‰, while trace amounts of mantle CO2 were found. The spatial distribution of the H2 concentration, CO2 concentration, He concentration, and mantle He proportions in gases indicated that higher values of He concentration and mantle He% always occur near sampling points with deeper circulation depths. However, no similar correlation was observed for H2 and CO2. Most earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater occurred near the regions with high values of mantle source He release, highlighting the critical role of mantle fluids in the occurrence of earthquakes in the region. Whether from the near-surface or at great depths, geothermal energy aims to harness the heat of the Earth to produce energy. Herein, emphasis is put on geothermal reservoirs and their cap rock in crystalline rocks, in particular, the basements of sedimentary basins and volcanic islands in the context of subduction. This study is based on a case study of three examples from around the world. The aim of this paper is to show how the study of newly formed minerals can help the exploration of geothermal reservoirs. The key parameters to define are the temperature (maximum temperature reached formerly), fluid pathways, and the duration of geothermal events. To define these parameters, numerous methods are used, including optical and electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, microthermometry on fluid inclusions, chlorite geothermometry, and geochemistry analysis, including that of isotopes. The key minerals that are studied herein are phyllosilicates and, in particular, clay minerals, quartz, and carbonates. They are formed because of hydrothermal alterations in fracture networks. These minerals can have temperatures of up to 300 °C (and they can cool down to 50 °C), and sometimes, they allow for one to estimate the cooling rate (e.g., 150 °C/200 ka). The duration of a hydrothermal event (e.g., at least 63 Ma or 650 ka, depending on the site) can also be established based on phyllosilicates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Huayangchuan U-polymetallic deposit in the Qinling Orogen is a newly verified carbonatite-hosted deposit on the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) in Central China. Granitic magmatism is extensively developed in the Huayangchuan deposit area and is lacking analysis on the reasons for these situations; however, its ages, petrogenesis, and relationship with uranium mineralization are not well constrained. Zircon U–Pb ages for the hornblende-bearing granite porphyry and medium-fine-grained biotite granites in close proximity to carbonatite rocks are 229.8 ± 1.1 and 135.3 ± 0.6 Ma, respectively. High-K calc-alkaline series and weakly peraluminous Triassic hornblende-bearing granite porphyry are slightly enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) with flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns, enriched in Ba and Sr, and depleted in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, i.e., geochemical characteristics similar to those of adakite-like rocks. The Early Cretaceous medium-fine-grained biotite granites are characterized by LREE enrichment and flat HREE patterns, which belong to high-K calc-alkaline series, and metaluminous belong to weakly peraluminous I-type granite, with U and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment and high field strength element depletion. The high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and enriched Nd (εNd(t) = −10.7 to −9.5 and −19.9 to −18.9, respectively) and Hf (εHf(t) = −21.8 to −13.0 and −30.5 to −19.0, respectively) isotopes revealed that both granitic rocks from the Huayangchuan deposit mainly originated from lower crustal materials, generated by partial melting of the ancient basement materials of the Taihua Group. Triassic hornblende-bearing granite porphyry is significantly different from the mantle origin of the contemporaneous U-mineralization carbonatite. In combination with tectonic evolution, we argue that the Qinling Orogenic Belt was affected by the subduction of the North Mianlian Ocean during the Late Triassic. The ongoing northward subduction of the Yangtze Craton resulted in crustal thickening, forming large-scale Indosinian carbonatites, U-polymetallic mineralization, and contemporaneous intermediate-acid magmatism. Additionally, due to the tectonic system transformation caused by Paleo-Pacific Plate subduction, intracontinental lithosphere extension and lithospheric thinning occurred along the southern NCC margin in the Early Cretaceous. Intense magma underplating of the post-orogeny created a large number of magmatic rocks. Various isotopic and palynological indicators have shown interspersed periods of aridity and humidity for the late Paleocene to early Eocene in central China, so the paleoclimate conditions remain unclear. This research investigates the environmental characteristics of a saline lake in the Jiangling depression, southwestern Jianghan Basin, from the Paleocene to the Eocene, using bulk-rock geochemistry in a 1280 m sediment core. The ratios of FeO/MnO, Al2O3/MgO, and C-value indicate a semi-humid to semi-arid climate in the early–middle Paleocene. There was a rapid shift to a humid climate during the late Paleocene to early Eocene, following a short time of intense dryness. The Eocene climate was arid, but experienced intermittent humidity. The variation trend of the CIA, CIW and PIA was similar to that of FeO/MnO, Al2O3/MgO, and the C-value, so chemical weathering of the surrounding rocks was controlled by climate change. The lake redox conditions in the Jiangling depression from the Paleocene to the Eocene were reconstructed using the ratios of U/Th, Ni/Co, and V/Cr. During humidity and alternations of aridity and humidity, the lake water received external water input, resulting in weak stratification, so the sediments were in oxidizing conditions. During aridity, lakes become endorheic, leading to sediments forming in reduced conditions. The salinity of the lake in the Jiangling depression from the Paleocene to the Eocene was determined through analysis of sedimentary sequences and the trend of the Sr/Ba ratio. In the early–middle Paleocene, lake salinity varied greatly. From the late Paleocene to the early Eocene, lake salinity decreased. In the Eocene, lake salinity increased and halite precipitated, but lake salinity finally decreased due to a humid climate. During the late Paleocene–early Eocene, the occurrence of multiple humid climates in the Jiangling depression were not merely regional effects. The most significant humidity was caused by a global hyperthermal (PETM), which caused a huge increase in precipitation in the whole of East Asia and even in low latitudes around the world. During the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition, a series of stratal continuous and well-preserved siliceous rock and phosphorite assemblages developed in Qingzhen, Guizhou Province, China, facilitating research on the biological evolution, marine chemistry, and palaeoecological environment of this period. Therefore, we investigated the paleontology, trace and rare earth elements, total organic carbon, total sulfur content, and Zn isotopes of the phosphorus-bearing rock series in the Taozichong Formation of the Cambrian period in Qingzhen. Geochemical analysis reveals that the sedimentary rocks in this area were formed in the oxygen-rich seawater environment and were not affected by high-temperature hydrothermal activity. The upwelling ocean current provided abundant rare earth elements and other nutrient elements, as well as conditions for the prosperity of biota in Qingzhen. In addition, the δ66Zn value (−0.21‰–0.41‰ range and 0.17‰ mean) in the Qingzhen phosphorous rock series was much lower than that in seawater, indicating a strong level of biological productivity. The variation trend of δ13C, δ18O, and δ66Zn exhibited four stages and three obvious drift events. The results suggest that climate change during this period led to the intermittent flourishing and extinction of organisms, which triggered the negative drift of δ13C and δ18O in the ocean, resulting in a coordinated response of δ66Zn. The unique ecological environment of the Taozichong Formation in Qingzhen also provides favorable conditions for the population continuation of Ediacaran-type benthic soft-bodied metazoon dominated by discoid fossils, Shaanxilithes, worm fossils, and sponge fossils in the Cambrian strata, as well as participation in the global biological explosion events. The Aolunhua Mo deposit is a typical porphyry deposit, which is located in the middle southern section of the Da Hinggan Range metallogenic belt. Here, we report LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb age data from the Mo-associated granitoid, together with the element geochemistry of the zircons, discussing the source material of the ore-forming rock of the deposit. The zircon data constrain the crystallization age of the granite porphyry as 135.0 ± 1.0 Ma, correlating it with the widespread Yanshanian intermediate–felsic magmatic activity. The Th/U ratio of the zircon is greater than 0.1, with a significant positive Ce anomaly (Ce* = 1.72–188.71) and a negative Eu anomaly (Eu* = 0.05–0.57). The zircons show depleted LREE and enriched HREE patterns, as well as low La and Pr contents, suggesting crystallization from crust-derived magmas. Based on the geology of the ore deposit and the age data, in combination with the regional geodynamic evolution, we infer that the Aolunhua Mo deposit was formed near the peak stage of Sn poly-metallic metallogenesis in the Da Hinggan Range region at around 140 Ma, associated with a tectonic setting, characterized by the transition from compression to extension. Based on a comparison with the newly found Mo deposits along the banks of the Xilamulun River, we propose that the Tianshan–Linxi is an important Mo-metallogenic belt. This study investigates the responses of the depositional environments of Soda Lake sediments to climatic shifts from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene epoch based on the results of major and trace elements of the North Soda Lake (NSL) NSL1A core. The NSL1A core records the sedimentary evolution of the Soda Lake watershed since at least 25 cal ka BP. Element analyses provide evidence that Soda Lake sediments are mostly derived from marine sequences in the Southern Coast Ranges of California. Variation in proxies for paleoweathering, paleoclimate, paleosalinity, paleoproductivity, paleoredox, and water depth is utilized to reconstruct the evolution of the sedimentary environment. The Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values indicate low to moderate chemical weathering in the sediment source regions. Paleoredox proxies indicate that the NSL1A core formed in a mainly subreduction environment. The NSL1A core is divided into four zones based on the results of the proxies. Zone 4 (5.0–5.8 m) of the sediment core indicates stable hydroclimatic conditions with low and constant sand and silt content, suggesting a warm and relatively humid environment. Zone 3 (3.35–5.0 m) represents the early half of the Last Glacial Maximum interval and a high lake stand. The elevated sand content suggests postflood events due to the northerly migration of westerly storm tracks. Zone 2 (1.075–3.35 m) reveals nuanced changes, including decreasing salinity, slight increases in wetness, detrital trace metals, and paleoproductivity. These subtle shifts suggest a multifaceted environmental evolution: a trend toward wetter conditions alongside a prolonged shift from cooler to warmer periods. Zone 1 (0.15–1.075 m) spans the Lateglacial to Holocene transition as well as Early and Middle Holocene, marked by significant hydrologic and ecologic variability including rapid warming during the Bølling–Allerød and rapid cooling linked to the Younger Dryas. The Zagros foreland basin is an important sedimentary archive for the tectonic and paleoclimatic evolution of the Zagros Mountains and the entire Neotethyan Arabia-Iran collision zone. By combining new geochemical high-resolution whole rock XRF data with clay mineralogy and soluble salt geochemistry we propose an evolution of the sedimentary environment in the Lurestan arc from the Serravallian to the early Pleistocene, closing a gap in understanding the complex exhumation history of the central Zagros mountain belt. An increase in ultramafic sedimentary input indicates a shift from provenance 1 to provenance 2 by ophiolite exhumation at ca.10 Ma in the Imbricated Zagros north of the Lurestan arc. Our data further indicates that the sedimentary environment of parts of the Lahbari Mb within the Lurestan arc represents a piedmont deposition of finegrained alluvial fans and siltstones with aeolian contribution deposited under hyper-arid climate conditions. These represent provenance shift 3 and were likely sourced from evaporites of the underlying Gachsaran Fm and fluvial deposits of the Lower Aghajari Mb (provenance 1 and provenance 2), uplifted by the Mountain Front Flexure at around 5.6 Ma. Combining XRF whole rock data with clay mineral data refines formation conditions of the clay minerals in the foreland basin such as palygorskite, which is revealed to be authigenic in origin in the Lower Aghajari Mb. as a function of varying Mg-content due to variations of erosion of the ultramafic and mafic rocks in the Imbricate Zagros belt. Accurately determining the timing and mechanism of metallogenesis of ore deposits is essential for developing a robust genetic model for their exploration. In this paper, we analyze the formation conditions of cassiterite in five major deposits of southern Hunan Province, one of the most important tungsten-tin (W-Sn) provinces in South China, using a combination of cathodoluminescence imaging, in situ U-Pb geochronology, and trace-element concentration data. In situ cassiterite U-Pb geochronology constrains the main period of Sn mineralization to between 155.4 and 142.0 Ma, demonstrating a temporal and genetic relationship to silicic intrusive magmatism in the same area. Three stages of magmatic activity and metallogenic evolution are recognized: (1) Early Paleozoic and Triassic: the initial enrichment stage of tungsten and tin; (2) Jurassic: the metasomatic mineralization stage; and (3) Cretaceous: the magmatic-hydrothermal superposition stage. The cassiterite in these deposits takes four forms, i.e., quartz vein-type, greisen-skarn-type, greisen-type, and granite-type, representing a progression characterized by the increasing content and decreasing range of variation of high field strength elements (HFSEs), and reflecting a general increase in the degree of evolution of the associated granites. Rare earth element (REE) concentrations suggest that precipitation of cassiterite was insensitive to the redox state of the fluid and that precipitation of cassiterite in the southern Hunan Sn deposits did not require a high-fO2 environment. The Cobar Basin, in central New South Wales, is an Early Devonian extensional basin that formed in the western Lachlan Orogen. The basin was filled with shallow- to deep-water sequences of the Cobar Supergroup and hosts small to large polymetallic deposits. Detrital zircon geochronology and whole-rock geochemical data collected from the Amphitheatre Group of the Cobar Supergroup provide constraints on the history of basin fill and illustrate the dynamic interplay between basin provenance and mineralisation, corresponding to the evolving tectonic regime. Data reveal provenance dissimilarity between the southern and northern parts of the basin. In the south, units of the Amphitheatre Group received abundant detritus from ca 430–410 Ma magmatic rocks situated to the southwest and southeast of the basin. By contrast, the northern successions were predominately sourced from recycled Ordovician basement found to the northwest, north, northeast of the basin, along with contributions associated with the Macquarie Arc. This spatial provenance variation, however, is less significant in the younger formations: the northern and southern sequences both exhibit an increase in older recycled detritus upwards with time. This reflects a progressive modification of basin paleogeography, during the transition from rift phase to sag phase. The rift-phase basin geography is characterised by fault-restricted deposition with predominant sediments derived from local proximal sources. The subsequent sag-phase subsidence exhibits a uniform depositional system with more homogenised basin input. This provenance variation is coeval with the stratigraphically controlled mineralisation features within the Amphitheatre Group successions, implying a provenance influence on mineralisation. Data suggest the different sediment source regions have produced distinct detrital mineral compositions between the major mineral-hosting and mineral-barren formations. The enrichment of some detrital minerals in the mineral-hosting units, such as feldspar, muscovite, Ti-minerals (and carbonate), is suggested to be an important factor for mineralisation in the basin. Detrital zircon geochronology and whole-rock geochemistry illustrate the history of basin fill for the Cobar Basin. Spatial and temporal variation of basin provenance reflects a modification of basin geography, corresponding to the evolving tectonic regimes. Ancient faecal material is becoming a highly valuable more frequently investigated proxy with which to address a wide range of research questions. With advancing scientific methodologies it is becoming easier to identify and to analyse. The aim of this paper is to use a set of archaeological and ethnographic case studies to illustrate and evaluate the range of methods that can be used in conjunction with each other to aid investigation of archaeological faecal material. This multi-scalar and multi-method approach uses portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF), spot sampling and smear slide analysis, micromorphology, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), environmental scanning microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (ESEM-EDX), and phytolith analysis. The case studies presented here focus on the Neolithic because of this unique opportunity to examine concentrations of animal dung from managed or early domesticated herds. This research illustrates a range of the methods that can be used in conjunction with each other to locate, identify and analyse faecal material. The results demonstrate that an integrated, multi-scalar, multi-methodological approach enables detection, identification, and investigation of a range of faecal attributes and provides new insights into key issues and themes on environment, animal management, diet, health, the built environment and energy sources. This integrated methodology and pilot study highlights two main recommendations. Firstly, modern faecal comparative material should always be consulted within the study region as a baseline for identifying and classifying different types of faecal material. Secondly, micromorphology and GC-MS samples are always vital proxies in further investigations to confirm the nature and identity of the dung sources once potential sample locations have been identified. The Dakrong-A Luoi area is located in the South Truong Son belt in the Indochina block and has been affected by multiple stages of magmatic-metamorphic events. In this paper, Paleozoic-Mesozoic granitoids from the Dakrong-A Luoi area were studied using LA ICP-MS U-Pb zircon geochronologies, Hf isotopes on zircon and whole-rock geochemistry of the Paleozoic to examine the tectonic-magmatic history of the Southern Truong Son belt. The magmatism history of the area can be divided into three phases, at ~ 452 Ma (Ordovician), ~259 Ma (Permian), and ~ 243 Ma (Triassic). The Ordovician granites were exposed in the narrow belt of NW-SE trending, while the later two granite phases were exposed in E-W trending. The Ordovician granites show consistent LA-ICP-MS zircon ꜪHf(t) values from + 6.2 to + 8.3. Their corresponding Hf model ages (TDM2) from 0.9 Ga to 1.0 Ga suggest that the Ordovician granite was derived from the partial melting of ancient crustal rocks, which is related to the subduction of the Tam Ky-Phuoc Son (TKPS) ocean beneath the Truong Son belt. The Permian granites have Hf isotopic natures (ꜪHf(t)=-1.6 to 1.3, TDM2 = 1.2–1.3 Ga) of partial melting from ancient mantle components with minor Paleoproterozoic ancient continental crust The Triassic granites have negative ɛHf(t) values ranging from −11.9 to −7.0 and Hf model ages of 1.7–2.0 Ga suggesting that they were a product of partial melting from the Paleoproterozoic crust, corresponding to subduction/collision of the Paleo-Tethys ocean beneath the Indochina block along the Song Ma suture. The distribution and activity of polyphosphate-accumulating sulfide oxidizing bacteria within marine sediments control the spatial distribution of sedimentary phosphorite formation in the modern ocean. In modern phosphogenetic settings, the concerted effect of microbial sulfide oxidation and microbial sulfate reduction in sediment pore waters is preserved in the sulfur isotope composition of trace sulfate in authigenic and early-stage diagenetic carbonate cements and phosphatic cements, as well as that of authigenic pyrite. If such variations in microbial sulfur metabolism controlled the spatial distribution of early phosphate mineralization in the geologic past, then one would expect to find differences between the sulfur isotope composition of cement-forming minerals in phosphatic and non-phosphatic facies of ancient sedimentary phosphate deposits. Here, we present paired measurements of the sulfur isotope composition of structural sulfate and structural sulfide in pore cements from co-occurring phosphatic and non-phosphatic facies of the Ediacaran Salitre Formation (Northeastern Brazil). The difference between δ34S of trace structural sulfate in carbonate cements (CAS) or phosphate cements (PAS) and δ34S of structural sulfide in pyrite or chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS), defined as Δ34S, provides a constraint on sulfur cycling within the pore waters from which the cements precipitated. In carbonate-cemented textures of the Salitre Formation, Δ34S = 12 to 31 ‰. In phosphate-cemented textures, however, PAS and pyrite crystals had more similar sulfur isotope compositions: Δ34S = −5–12 ‰. These values support the hypothesis that microbial sulfide oxidation was more prevalent in pore waters where phosphate mineralization occurred compared to pore waters where carbonate mineralization occurred – suggesting that microbial sulfide oxidation may have enabled the formation of sedimentary phosphorite on an Ediacaran carbonate platform, just as in modern phosphogenetic sites. During the Late Cretaceous, a magmatic arc extended from the Lesser Caucasus through the northern margin of the Pontides into Srednogorie, Timok, Banat, and Apuseni (ABTS) in the Balkans for a distance of 2700 km. We studied the arc volcanic rocks in three regions in the Western Pontides and reviewed the geological data on the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS magmatic arc, which shows several common features. Prior to the start of the arc magmatism, the region underwent uplift and erosion. New and published geochronologic and biostratigraphic data show that magmatism in the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS arc started in the Turonian (ca. 93 Ma) peaked in the middle Campanian (80–78 Ma) and became rare and sporadic after the late Campanian (ca. 75 Ma). Magmatism was dominantly calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline and shows typical subduction geochemical signatures. Late Cretaceous volcanism took place in a submarine and extensional environment. In the Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS belt, the arc volcanic rocks are overlain by Maastrichtian to Palaeocene marine limestones and sandstones, marking the end of the main phase of arc magmatism. However, in the Kefken region in the Western Pontides, Maastrichtian limestone sequence includes a volcanic horizon with a U-Pb zircon age of ca. 71 Ma. The Maastrichtian volcanic rocks show a more varied geochemistry than the older arc volcanic rocks, and include alkaline basalts, calc-alkaline basalts, and adakites. The coeval start of arc magmatism in the 2700-km-long Lesser Caucasus-Pontide-ABTS belt is related to the inception of the Africa-Eurasia convergence at ca. 96 Ma, which is also independently indicated by the beginning of intra-oceanic subduction, inferred from the ages of sub-ophiolite metamorphic rocks in Anatolia. The end of magmatism is linked to a marked decrease in the convergence rate during the Campanian, which was also partitioned between the northern and southern Tethyan subduction zones. A combined study of whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic data, and zircon U-Pb geochronological and Hf isotopes has been carried out for several Neoproterozoic intrusions, including the Lung Thang, Posen and Sin Quyen in the Phan Si Pan Zone, northwest Vietnam to constrain their age, petrogenesis and tectonic implications. The Lung Thang and Posen intrusions, mainly composed of granodiorite, were formed at 803–777 Ma and are characterized by moderate SiO2 (64.43–66.65 wt.%), and K2O (4.05–4.89 wt.%), with A/CNK and A/NK values of (0.94–1.03) and (1.72–2.11), respectively. They have negative whole-rock εNd(t) (−6.16 to −3.73) and zircon εHf(t) values (−7.9 to −4.1), which suggest that the Lung Thang and Posen intrusions were generated by partial melting of ancient, K-rich crustal rocks. The Sin Quyen intrusion, occurring as dykes, is composed of monzodiorite and was emplaced at 742 ± 3 Ma. The Sin Quyen intrusion has high alkalies (K2O+Na2O = 7.42–7.47 wt.%), and low MgO (<1.31 wt.%) and Ni (6.55–6.93 ppm), with A/CNK and A/NK values of (0.67–0.68) and (1.64–1.68), respectively. Their whole-rock εNd(t) and zircon εHf(t) values are −6.15 to −5.92 and −5.8 to + 8, respectively. These geochemical characteristics suggest that the Sin Quyen intrusion was produced by the partial melting of ancient crustal sources mingled with mantle-derived components. Geochemically, the Lung Thang, Posen and Sin Quyen intrusions are medium- to high-K, calc-alkaline in nature and show enrichment in LILE (Th, U, K, Rb) and LREE, and strong negative anomalies of Nb, Ta, and Ti. Such geochemical characteristics suggest that they formed in a subduction-related tectonic environment. The geochronological and geochemical correlation of these intrusions with those along the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block in South China suggests that the Phan Si Pan zone in northwestern Vietnam is a constituent of the SW Yangtze Block. Additionally, these intrusions show a significant correlation with other contemporaneous magmatic rocks in the northeast Indochina Block, Lhasa Block, the northwestern margin of Greater India as well as those in Seychelles and northern Madagascar. This correlation suggests a similar history and synchronous episode of crustal growth/recycling in an Andean-type arc system along the western and northern margin of the Rodinia supercontinent during the Neoproterozoic. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopic and whole‐rock geochemical data for early Paleozoic–early Mesozoic igneous rocks from the Zhangguangcai Range, which are used to provide constraints on the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of these rocks and on the tectonic evolution of the eastern Songnen Massif. We dated five igneous rocks from the Zhangguangcai Range of the eastern Songnen Massif, namely, a late Cambrian (~489 Ma) syenogranite, a middle Silurian (~431 Ma) dacite, a Middle Triassic (~247 Ma) gabbro‐diorite and two Late Triassic (214–210 Ma) rhyolites. The late Cambrian syenogranite, middle Silurian dacite and Late Triassic rhyolites have high SiO2 and (Na2O + K2O) contents and low Mg# values. These four rocks are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large‐ion lithophile elements (LILEs) but depleted in heavy REEs (HREEs) and high‐field‐strength elements (HFSEs). In addition, the εHf(t) values and TDM2 ages of zircons from these rocks range from −1.31 to +5.88 and from 1264 to 896 Ma, respectively. These data suggest that their primary magma was derived from partial melting of the juvenile mafic lower crust that was generated during the Mesoproterozoic–Neoproterozoic. The Middle Triassic gabbro‐diorite has low SiO2 and high MgO, Sc, Co, Cr and Ni contents and is enriched in LILEs and LREEs but depleted in HREEs and HFSEs such as Nb and Ta. Combining these features with the zircon εHf(t) values of the gabbro‐diorite, which range from +0.02 to +1.79, the primary magma of this rock is inferred to have been derived from partial melting of an isotopically depleted lithospheric mantle. The late Cambrian syenogranites and the middle Silurian dacites are weakly peraluminous and are classified as medium‐ to high‐K calc‐alkaline series, indicating that they formed in an active‐continental‐margin setting. The Middle–Late Triassic igneous rocks exhibit a bimodal igneous rock association, suggesting that they formed within an extensional environment. Combining our new results with previous findings, the early Paleozoic–early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the eastern Songnen Massif is revealed. During the early Cambrian–early Silurian, the oceanic plate between the southern Songnen and southern Jiamusi massifs subducted westward beneath the Songnen Massif. The amalgamation between the southern Songnen and southern Jiamusi massifs occurred during the middle Silurian, and the southeastern Songnen Massif was in a post‐collisional extensional setting during the Devonian. During the late Carboniferous–Triassic, the Zhangguangcai Range was in an extensional environment, and the Mudanjiang Ocean started to open along the Jiayin–Mudanjiang Fault, separating the Songnen and Jiamusi massifs during the Middle–Late Triassic. The formation and evolution of the foreland basin in the south of the Dabie Orogen are both closely related to the uplift of the orogenic belt. However, the Late Triassic paleoenvironment and the provenance of the sediments in the foreland basin remain controversial. Nine samples from the Upper Triassic Puqi Group of the foreland basin were analysed for whole‐rock major and trace elements and three sandstone samples were selected for zircon dating by U–Pb laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The concentrations of some major (e.g., CaO and Na2O) and trace (e.g., Rb, Sr and Ba) elements varied over a large range and showed different degrees of depletion. A series of major and trace element indicators, as well as the patterns of the rare earth elements, suggested derivation from felsic igneous rocks. The Late Triassic experienced fluctuations between cold warm climates, as indicated by the chemical weathering index ranging from 51.33 to 88.65. The CaO/(FeO + CaO), Rb/Sr and Ba/K ratios indicated that the paleosalinity changed from high to low. The Fe2O3/FeO, U/Th, V/Cr and Ni/Co ratios indicated an oxidizing sedimentary environment. The cathodoluminescence images, Th/U ratios and rare earth elements patterns of the detrital zircons all indicated a magmatic origin. Three samples showed significant peak ages of 224, 440, 748, 1870 and 2492 Ma, corresponding to the development of the Dabie Orogen. Our comprehensive analyses suggest that the Upper Triassic Puqi Group was formed by deposition during continental–continental collision. The Palaeozoic magmatic history of Central Iran is related to the subduction of the Proto‐Tethys Ocean and the amalgamation of Gondwana continental fragments. This study presents whole‐rock geochemistry, Sr–Nd isotope and zircon U–Pb–Hf ages of shoshonitic plutonic rocks (e.g., monzonite–syenite) from the north Posht‐e‐Badam (NPB) district with a view to constrain their petrogenetic and tectono‐magmatic evolution during the Palaeozoic. The geochemical data show moderate enrichment in large‐ion lithophile elements and Ti, large positive Pb anomalies, and depletion or moderate enrichment in high‐field‐strength elements (e.g., Nb and Ta), typical of continental arcs. Zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb ages are in the range of 444–428 Ma. The Sr–Nd–Hf isotope data, for example, (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.7073 to 0.7089, εNd(t) = −1.4 to −0.2, and εHf(t) = −3.6 to +7.7, indicate derivation of the magma from a mantle source. The numerical modelling shows a contribution of less than 10% crustal assimilation and ~3% sediment into the melt‐derived mantle. We propose that metasomatic enrichment occurred during the subduction of Proto‐Tethyan Ocean between the Iranian microcontinents, leading to the formation of a shoshonitic melt. We infer that the recorded ages coincide with a continental rift episode followed by a rear arc tectonic region that spread along the northern active margin of Gondwana. Further, the change in magma affinity from calc‐alkaline (~474–512 Ma) to shoshonitic (444–428 Ma) in Central Iran is probably related to the gradual steepening of the slab dip angle and trench‐ward migration of the front arc into the region above metasomatically enriched rear arc mantle. Scheelite, one kind of common REE-rich and U-bearing hydrothermal mineral, is extensively developed in various types of gold deposits, which can be used to record nature and timing of metallogenesis. The Zhaishang Carlin-like gold deposit in the Qinling Orogen is a giant Au deposit, hosting 127t of Au @ 2.67 g/t with economic concentrations of tungsten and antimony. The study reports two types of scheelite based on the characteristics of petrography and geochemistry. Sch A shows significant oscillatory zoning with dark gray cathodoluminescence (CL) response, whereas Sch B displays patchy textures with brighter CL response. Systematic LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating of Sch A and Sch B yields ages of 227.1 ± 3.2 Ma and 226.2 ± 6.9 Ma, respectively. The new dates, constraining the Zhaishang Au–W mineralization to ~ 227Ma, coincide well with the western Qinling magmatism, metallogenic and tectonic events. There are significant variations in concentration, the Sch A has low REE content (mean = 41.3 ppm), negative Eu-anomaly with slightly positive Ce-anomaly, whereas Sch B, with small negative or positive Eu-anomaly, has higher REE content (mean = 247 ppm) and higher positive Ce-anomaly. The positive correlation of EuN and EuN* records oxidizing condition during the whole W mineralization event. Additionally, Sch B intergrown with selenides with an increase in the Ce-anomaly supports that the latter has higher oxygen fugacity environment. The Sr isotope signature for scheelite supports that ore-forming metals mostly inherited the host rock component, while the proportion of magma-derived Sr increased in the Sch B. Fluid–rock interactions co-precipitated Au and W caused by the release of Fe and Ca cations and the increase of pH. The study highlights that scheelite as a recorder can help in deciphering the nature and timing of metallogenesis of the studied Au–Sb–W deposit, and thus other similar Au–W deposits. The Lichi volcanics are a suite of mafic-intermediate-felsic rocks and are considered coeval with the Abor volcanics (~132 Ma) of the Siang window in the Eastern Himalaya. Here, we present the first report of trachytic rocks from the Lichi volcanics, which are exposed in the Ranga valley, along the Kimin-Yazali road section in the Eastern Himalayan Region, Northeast India. The trachytes occur in close association with sandstones of the Gondwana Group of rocks and are characterised based on field, petrographical, and geochemical investigations. These fine-grained trachytes are composed of alkali feldspar, biotite, plagioclase, sodic-amphibole, apatite, illmenite, and titanite. The REE profiles of the evolved trachytic rocks (higher SiO2 content) display fractionated trends. The fractionation of accessory mineral phases, like apatite and titanite, was possibly responsible for the strongly fractionated REE patterns of the evolved samples. The trachytic rocks demonstrate high apatite saturation temperatures of 988 ± 14 °C (1σ, n = 8). The Aluminium Saturation Index (< 1.1) and binary discrimination diagrams of these peralkaline trachytes define their affinity with A-type granitoids. Elemental ratios like Y/Nb, Nb/U, and Ce/Pb signify that the Lichi trachytes are differentiated products of mantle-derived ocean island basalts. Trace elemental discrimination diagrams Th/Yb versus Nb/Yb, Y versus Nb, and Y + Nb versus Rb reflect a within-plate tectonic regime for the trachytes. From the results presented in this work, we infer that the development of rifting events during the breakup of eastern Gondwana due to the onset of Kerguelen plume activity further led to underplating of basic magma in lower crustal levels. These parental basaltic magmas underwent fractionation processes forming differentiated trachyandesites and trachytes. Taking into consideration the similarities recorded between the Lichi volcanics and Abor volcanics, this study supports the idea that Kerguelen plume activities resulted in the emplacement of these volcanics in the Eastern Himalayas. In the south Eastern Desert of Egypt, two contrasting types of magmatism (mafic and felsic) are recorded in the Wadi Kalalat area, and form the Gabal El Motaghiarat and Gabal Batuga intrusions, respectively. The two intrusions post-dates ophiolitic and arc associations represented by serpentinite and metagabbro-diorite, respectively. The mafic intrusion has a basal ultramafic member represented by fresh peridotite, which is followed upward by olivine gabbro and anorthositic or leucogabbro. This mafic intrusion pertains to the Alaskan-type mafic–ultramafic intrusions in the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS) being of tholeiitic nature and emplaced in a typical arc setting. On the other hand, the Gabal Batuga intrusion comprises three varieties of fresh A-type granites of high K-calc alkaline nature, which is peraluminous and garnet-bearing in parts. A narrow thermal aureole in the olivine gabbro of the mafic intrusion was developed due to the intrusion of the Batuga granites. This results in the development of a hornfelsic melagabbro variety in which the composition changed from tholeiitic to a calc-alkaline composition due to the addition of SiO2, Al2O3, alkalis, lithosphile elements (LILEs) such as Rb (70 ppm) and Y (28 ppm) from the felsic intrusion. Outside the thermal aureole, Rb amounts 2–8 ppm and Y lies in the range < 2–6 ppm. It is believed that the Gabal Batuga felsic intrusion started to emplace during the waning stage of an arc system, with transition from the pre-collisional (i.e., arc setting) to post-collisional and within plate settings. Magma from which the Gabal Batuga granites were fractionated is high-K calc-alkaline giving rise to a typical post-collisional A-type granite (A2-subtype) indicating an origin from an underplating crustal source. Accordingly, it is stressed here that the younger granites in the ANS are not exclusively post-collisional and within-plate but most likely they started to develop before closure of the arc system. The possible source(s) of mafic magmas that resulted in the formation of the two intrusions are discussed. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the K-rich granites from the Armoor granitic rocks in the northeastern portion of the Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC) are presented. In order to understand its physicochemical conditions, the petrogenesis of the granitoid was explained from biotite chemistry and geochemical systematics. Studies of mineral chemistry expose that compositionally, K-feldspar and plagioclase in Armoor granite rocks range from An0, Ab3−5.9, Or94−96.9 and An5−29, Ab71.9−94.9, Or0−1.5, respectively. The mineral chemistry of biotite crystals exhibits composition that varies from primary to re-equilibrated primary biotites. Although biotites from the Armoor granites generally exhibit an I-type trend, with calc-alkaline parental magma in a subduction setting. Biotite chemistry of granites displays magnetite (oxidized) series nature, which has oxygen fugacity (fO2) = − 15.1 to − 16.7(log10 bar), under high oxidizing conditions. Temperature and pressure estimates for the crystallization of Armoor granites based on biotite composition are T = 612–716 °C and 1.0−0.4 kbar, respectively. Geochemically, these rocks are metaluminous to slightly peraluminous and magnesian, with calc-alkaline potassium-rich granite. On the chondrite normalized REE diagram, the granites have positive europium anomalies; rich Sr/Y, (Dy/Yb)N ratios and reduced Mg#, Rb/Sr, Rb, Sr indicate that the melting of earlier rocks, crystal accumulation and residual garnet source formed at high pressures. The examined granites show that they are produced from the melting of crustal sources. Geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology, and Hf isotope data for the Early Paleozoic granites in the Baoshan Block reveal the Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Proto-Tethys. The samples are high-K, calc-alkaline, strongly peraluminous rocks with A/CNK values of 1.37–1.46, are enriched in SiO2, K2O, and Rb, and are depleted in Nb, P, Ti, Eu, and heavy rare earth elements, which indicates the crystallization fractionation of the granitic magma. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that they formed in ca. 480 Ma. The Nansa granites have εHf(t) values ranging from − 16.04 to 4.36 with corresponding TCDM ages of 2.10–0.81 Ga, which suggests the magmas derived from the partial melting of ancient metasedimentary with minor involvement of mantle-derived components. A synthesis of data for the Early Paleozoic igneous rocks in the Baoshan block and adjacent (Tengchong, Qiangtang, Sibumasu, Himalaya, etc.) blocks indicates that these blocks were all aligned along the proto-Tethyan margin of East Gondwana in the Early Paleozoic. The Early Paleozoic S-type granites from Nansa were generated in a high-temperature and low-pressure (HTLP) extensional tectonic setting, which resulted from Andean-type orogeny instead of the final assembly of Gondwana or crustal extension in a non-arc environment. In certain places, an expanding environment may exist in opposition to the tectonic backdrop of the lithosphere's thickening and shortening, leading the crust to melt and decompress, mantle-derived materials to mix, and a small quantity of peraluminous granite to emerge. Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled (D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg, Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Despite the obvious methodological similarities between archaeology and geology, we argue here that the fundamental assumption in scientific provenance studies of inorganic artefacts provides an insufficient basis for the methodology. That assumption is that there is a geochemical link between the source of the raw material and the finished object. Although this is undoubtedly necessary, it is not sufficient. We argue that, particularly for highly processed materials such as metal, glass, or ceramics, an equally (if not more) important factor is the sequence of human activities which are applied to the raw material during processing to become an object. In fact, we suggest that the main requirement for successful provenance work is the existence of sustained and repeatable quality assurance processes during production, carried out within a defined resourcescape. The gabbro-dioritoid rocks from Veľké Železné (Nízke Tatry Mts., Western Carpathians, Slovakia) were recently studied in order to better understand the age, origin, and evolution of the basic/intermediate magmas associated with Variscan granitic rocks. Their genesis was investigated from the points of view of petrology, whole-rock geochemistry (including Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic characteristics), as well as U-Th-Pb zircon and apatite dating. The Famennian magmatic crystallization age of ca. 360 Ma (determined from zircon: 362.4 ± 2.9 Ma and apatite: 358.4 ± 2.8 Ma) is older than the Tournaisian-Visean ages for granite intrusions in the Tatric Unit. Geochemically, the studied rocks have an affinity to arc-related basalts, consisting of a metaluminous, magnesian, and high-potassium calc-alkaline character. Isotope data (i.e., (87Sr/86Sr)360 = 0.7035-0.7044 and εNd360 = +1.4 to +1.6) demonstrate that these gabbro-dioritoids were formed from the mantle-influenced, lower crustal and/or sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) sources, whereas the unsystematic increase of Pb isotope ratios indicate either the melting of an ancient Enriched mantle-II (EM-II) reservoir or the upper crustal assimilation and/or local fluid alteration. The data presented in this paper favour the origin of the studied gabbro-dioritoids at a continental arc, although we cannot rule out their genesis as a result of the subsequent slab break-off. New data on the U–Th–Pb geochronology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and Sm–Nd and Rb–Sr isotopes for granitoids and the associated subalkaline rocks of the Tarbagannakh pluton of the Allakh-Yun tectonic zone in the Verkhoyansk fold-and-thrust belt are presented. These rocks, including trachyandesibasalt dikes, combined into the Uemlyakh complex, were formed about 120 Ma from a continental crust source probably with input from an enriched mantle component. Rapakivi granites are reported for the first time among them; their origin is reference for understanding the geodynamic conditions of formation of rocks in this complex. A tectonic model for the formation of these rocks due to slab break-off during the development of the active continental margin in the Aptian age is proposed. It is discussed that this magmatism was conducive for the widespread development of metasomatic processes until the end of the Aptian age and was at the same time a source of the coinciding spatially gold mineralization of the Okhotsk–Koryak metallogenic belt. Scanning micro-X-ray fluorescence analysis with synchrotron radiation was applied to obtain the depth-variation profiles of element compositions of banded clays in Peyungda Lake (Krasnoyarsk krai, Evenkia) located 30 km southwest of the epicenter of the Tunguska event (1908). The age model was confirmed by a dated layer of anomalous thickness related to the fall and explosion of the Tunguska Cosmic Body (TCB). The variations in the element content in dated core layers were compared with the instrumental meteorological observation data over the last century. The regional average annual temperature and element compositions of the coeval bottom sediments (transfer function) were found to be interrelated. The approximation of the transfer function to the sampling depth of the sedimentary section made it possible to reconstruct the air temperature in the studied region over the past 1000 years. The average annual temperature reconstructions in the study area compared with the global temperature reconstructions in the Arctic region for the same period made it possible to reveal general trends and extreme values. The concentration and temperature dependences of the solubility of natural pyrochlore and columbite and Ta and Nb oxides are experimentally studied in NaOH and (mNaF + mNaOH) alkaline aqueous solutions at 300–550°C and 50 and 100 MPa and low oxygen fugacity (Co–CoO and Ni–NiO buffers). The initial NaOH and NaF concentrations varied in the range of 0.01–2 m and 0.01–1 m, respectively. It is established that the Nb content in alkaline solutions within the entire concentration range is higher than the Ta content by approximately two and half orders of magnitude. The solubility of pyrochlore in alkaline Na solutions is significantly higher than that of columbite allowing us to consider that Nb forms complexes in alkaline fluids, whereas the Ta complexes are suppressed. The solubility of pyrochlore and columbite with increasing temperature decreases, and the presence of an F ion in form of low NaF content positively affects the solubility of Ta and Nb minerals and oxides at high temperatures (500–550°C). It is established that the lower oxygen fugacity (Co–CoO buffer) is favorable for the precipitation of Nb in NaOH fluids. The study of the pressure effect at 50 and 100 MPa on the solubility of pyrochlore, columbite, and Na and Nb oxides in alkaline Na solutions showed that the solubility of pyrochlore increases with increasing pressure, whereas that of columbite remains almost unchanged. Thus, the decrease in pressure favors the Nb precipitation in form of tantaloniobates at the dissolution of pyrochlore. No this correlation is observed for columbite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The carbonatite-related Nb deposits of the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province (APIP) in central Brazil, currently account for ∼92 % of the global Nb production. In the APIP, pyrochlore is abundant in magnetite–apatite–tetraferriphlogopite ± carbonate rocks or phoscorites, occurring as interbedded layers with carbonatites in the lower hypogene zone, feeding dike swarms of phoscorite and calcite carbonatite, and late-stage carbothermal veins in the upper hypogene zone. The origin of the phoscorite-carbonatite association can be explained by three hypotheses: (1) crystal segregation from fractional crystallization, (2) liquid immiscibility, and/or (3) phoscoritic magma formation after basement metasomatism (fenitization). However, it is not well understood whether pyrochlore formation is limited to a carbonatitic event, carbohydrothermal, or both, and this gap of knowledge is addressed in this work. To investigate the petrogenesis of pyrochlore-rich phoscorite, cathodoluminescence (CL) images, chemical maps, and LA-ICP-MS data were acquired of pyrochlore crystals from magmatic and carbothermal rocks from the Boa Vista Nb mine, Catalão II Complex. In the Boa Vista mine, oscillatory and patchy zoning were identified as primary pyrochlore textures commonly recorded at the lower hypogene zone, while secondary dissolution, skeletal and zonation-free textures are registered at shallower depths in the upper hypogene zone. Calciopyrochlore is the dominant Nb phase at the Boa Vista mine, with only two kenopyrochlore outliers. The pyrochlore CI chondrite-normalized REE distribution is consistent with geochemical results of the carbonatite and phoscorite rocks, indicating a magmatic origin for pyrochlore and the presence of pyrochlore antecrysts in carbothermal veins. The Sr/Y vs La and Na vs Ce diagrams in pyrochlore indicate a continuous fractionation pattern, with some mixtures of antecrysts and primary phases. An examination of intercumulus calcite using CL provide evidence of carbonatitic magma residues within tetraferriphlogopite phoscorite dikes and suggests that alkaline–carbonate-rich fluids played a role in transporting heavy minerals (i.e., magnetite, apatite, pyrochlore). Consequently, the textural and chemical evidence in the Boa Vista Nb mine indicates that the origin of pyrochlore-rich phoscorites is the result of physical segregation of heavy minerals from a carbonatite magma by fractional crystallization, leading to the emplacement of pyrochlore-rich carbonatite and phoscorite dikes. The implications at Catalão II may extend to other APIP alkaline-carbonatite complexes, as they share a genetic connection, and should motivate further studies focusing on pyrochlore geochemistry in other carbonatite-related Nb deposits, which will be crucial for advancing our knowledge of global Nb metallogenesis. Arroyo Verde epithermal deposit, in the North Patagonia region of Argentina, is located within the Lower Chon Aike volcanism and is developed between 192.6 ± 2.5 Ma (mineralization host rock) and 189.5 ± 2.6 Ma (overlying lava). Marifil volcanic complex is the host rock for these veins, veinlets and breccias. This particular small deposit has developed low to intermediate sulphidation characteristics, with gangue mineral textures associated with several ore minerals. Electron probe microanalysis determines electrum, silver minerals such as acanthite, and tetrahedrite, related Ag-Cu minerals like jalpaite, mckinstryite, stromeyerite, and base metals like chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena and pyrite. Fluid inclusions in quartz of two out of five events indicate that these Low Jurassic veins were formed due to subtle boiling and dilution mechanisms and by low-salinity (3.4 wt.% to 6.7 wt.% NaCl Eq) magmatic-hydrothermal fluid at 225 to 310 °C. The fluid inclusion measurements that indicate boiling (Event 3) were plotted, and based on this data, we interpret that the Arroyo Verde deposit has been eroded between 550 and 700 m. The basalts within the greenstone belt worldwide serve as an ideal target to decipher the nature of Archean mantle sources and further to extend the understanding of the early stages of Earth's evolution. To provide important insights into the issues, we carried out a detailed investigation of whole-rock geochemistry and Sm-Nd isotopes, and zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopes for the Late Neoarchean metamorphosed basalts in eastern Hebei, North China Craton. U-Pb isotopic dating using the LA-ICP-MS on zircons reveals that the basalts in eastern Hebei erupted at ca. 2.48–2.51 Ga and subsequently experienced multiple regional metamorphic events at 2 477 and 1 798 Ma, respectively. The metamorphosed basalts are featured by low SiO2, MgO, K2O + Na2O, and high FeO contents, endowed with the subalkaline and high-Fe tholeiitic affinities. The radiogenic initial Nd and Hf isotope values and correlations among V, Ni and Cr contents strongly imply that the basalts experienced significant clinopyroxene and olivine fractionation and minor crustal contamination during magma evolution. They are also characterized by the relatively low total REE contents and exhibit significant depletions to moderate enrichments in the LREE contents, indicating the derivation from a deep mantle source in an Archean proto-mantle plume setting. The Bipindi iron ore district is located in the central section of the Nyong Complex at the northwestern margin of the Congo Craton in Southwest Cameroon. This iron district contains numerous iron mineralization hosted by the Mewongo, Bibole, Kouambo, and Zambi banded iron formations (BIFs). These BIFs contain magnetite as the main iron ore mineral associated with pyrite, and gangue minerals are quartz with minor chlorite and amphibole. The origin of iron ore from these BIFs was investigated using a combination of in-situ magnetite and whole-rock chemistry. The studied BIF ore samples have a narrow range of TFe between 30.90 wt.% and 43.20 wt.%, indicating a low-grade ore. The geochemical signatures of magnetite such as low contents of base metals (e.g., Cu, Co, V, and Zn) and low Co/Zn ratios < 0.85 indicate a hydrothermal origin. Combined with the geochemical features of these BIFs, e. g., high Fe/Ti and Fe/Al ratios (mean > 600 and > 75, respectively), we suggest that magnetite was derived from a mixture of seawater and ∼0.1% low-temperature hydrothermal fluids in an oxidizing environment. Collectively, low-temperature hydrothermal and later metamorphic fluids were necessary for the transformation of the protolith Nyong Complex BIFs to iron ore. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to decipher element mobility in UHP meta-sedimentary rocks in the continental subduction zone, major and trace element compositions are investigated for a continuous profile from a representative UHP region in the Dabie Mountains. Among the lithologic contact zone, contents of K, Ca, LREE, and LILE exhibit varying degrees of downward trends in both marble and eclogite toward the contact zone, indicating that marble and their associated eclogite can release a large amount of K, Ca, and a small number of LILEs and LREEs. Titanite is the main Ti phase in both marble and eclogite. Titanite rims around rutile can occasionally be seen in eclogite. Contents of Ti and HFSE exhibit a well-coupled relation among marble and eclogite, indicating that substantial Ti and HFSEs were migrated from eclogite to marble, in accord with the capacity of a melt medium. Rutiles and titanites in marble exhibit a relatively limited variation in Nb/Ta ratios (12.9–16.2), similar to those of titanites in eclogite (14.2–16.7), which demonstrates that rutiles and titanites in marble were sourced from eclogite because of short-distance migrations of Ti and HFSEs. According to the P-T path and the temperature and pressure conditions of the peak metamorphism reported by previous studies, the eclogite associated with marble may not form supercritical fluids in the subduction zone because of the addition of carbonate minerals. During the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian, a rift was formed by post‐collisional extension after ocean closure or an island arc‐related basin formed by Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) subduction in the Xi Ujimqin area. Nevertheless, the closure time of the PAO is still under debate. Thus, to identify the origin of the PAO, the geochemistry and U‐Pb age of zircons were analyzed for the extra‐large deep marine, polymict clastic boulders and sandstones in the Shoushangou Formation within the basin. The analyses revealed magmatic activity and tectonic evolution. The conglomerates include megaclasts of granite (298.8 ± 9.1 Ma) and granodiorite porphyry (297.1 ± 3.1 Ma), which were deposited by muddy debris flow. Results of this study demonstrated that the boulders of granitoids have the geochemistry of typical I‐type granite, characterized by low Zr + Nb + Ce + Y and low Ga/Al values. The granitoid boulders were formed in island arc setting, indicating the presence of arc magmatism in the area that is composed of the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian subduction‐related granitoid in southern Xi Ujimqin. Multiple diagrams for determining sedimentary provenance using major and trace elements indicate that Shoushangou sediments originated from continental island arc‐related felsic rocks. Detrital zircon U‐Pb age cluster of 330‐280 Ma was obtained, indicating input from granite, ophiolite, Xilin Gol complex, and Carboniferous sources to the south. The basin was geographically developed behind the arc during the Early Permian period because the outcropped intrusive rocks in the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian form a volcanic arc. The comprehensive analyses of source areas suggest that Shoushangou sediments developed in a backarc basin in response to the northward subduction of the PAO. The backarc basin and intrusive rocks, in addition to previously published Late Carboniferous to Early Permian magmatic rocks of arc unit in Xilin Gol, confirm the presence of an Early Permian trench‐arc‐basin system in the region, represented by the Baolidao arc and Xi Ujimqin backarc basin. This study highlights the importance and potential of combined geochemical and geochronological studies of conglomerates and sandstone for reconstructing the geodynamic setting of a basin. Lamprophyres typically appear in hydrothermal gold deposits. The relationship between lamprophyres and gold deposits is investigated widely. Some researchers suggest that the emplacement of lamprophyres triggers gold mineralization, whereas others hypothesize that the formation of lamprophyres increases the fertility of mantle sources and ore‐forming fluids. K‐feldspar veins, with ages between those of lamprophyres and gold deposits, appear in lamprophyres in Zhenyuan. Therefore, K‐feldspar veins are ideal for investigating the relationship between lamprophyres and gold deposits. Phlogopite in K‐feldspar veins has lower Mg#, Ni, and Cr contents and higher TiO2, Li, Ba, Sr, Sc, Zr, Nb, and Cs contents than phlogopite in lamprophyres. The in‐situ Sr isotopic values of apatites (0.7063–0.7066) in K‐feldspar veins are within the range for apatites (0.7064–0.7078) from lamprophyres. High large‐ion lithophile element concentrations and low Nb and Ta concentrations in phlogopite from lamprophyres, in addition to high (87Sr/86Sr)i values of apatite (0.7064–0.7078), indicate that the magma parental to these phlogopite and apatite crystals is derived from an enriched mantle. K‐feldspar veins are genetically correlated with lamprophyres, whereas sulfide mineral assemblage and trace element compositions of pyrite in K‐feldspar veins suggest that K‐feldspar veins in lamprophyres are not directly related to gold mineralization of the Zhenyuan deposit. The combined petrographic, petrological, geochemical and geochronological study of the Neoproterozoic gneisses of the Sarychabyn and Baskan complexes of the Junggar Alataw of South Kazakhstan elucidate the Precambrian tectonic evolution of the Aktau–Yili terrane. It is one of the largest Precambrian crustal blocks in the western Central Asian orogenic belt. The U‐Pb single‐grain zircon ages indicate that granite‐gneisses formed from the same source and crystallised in the early Neoproterozoic ca. 930–920 Ma. The chemical composition of gneisses corresponds to A2‐type granites. The whole‐rock Nd isotopic characteristics (εNd(t) = –4.9 to –1.0 and TNd(DM‐2st) = 1.9 to 1.7 Ga) indicate the involvement of Paleoproterozoic crustal rocks in magma generation. Early Neoproterozoic ca. 930–920 Ma A‐type granitoids in the Aktau–Yili terrane of South and Central Kazakhstan might reflect within‐plate magmatism adjacent to the collisional belt or a local extension setting in back‐arc areas of the continental arc.
