Abstract

Proliferating cells remain transiently blocked at different cycle compartments until specific stressors are removed or until the cells become adapted to their presence. This paper investigates the efficiency of cycle blocks in three sugarcane hybrids with the full noble cane (Saccharum officinarum) genome (2n = 8x = 80) but differing in the number of introgressed S. spontaneum (2n = 8x = 64) chromosomes. The My5514, B42231 and C236-51 cultivars possess 20, 30 and 40 additional S. spontaneum chromosomes, respectively. Flow cytometry showed that over 90% of cells were accumulated with a 2C DNA content in their dormant primordia. The presence of S. spontaneum chromosomes decreased the low stringency of the 4C block. The greater the number of these chromosomes, the lower was the number of quiescent cells with a 4C DNA content (P<0.05). Shortly after stimulation of the primordia (85% relative humidity and 30°C), i.e. in the 2 mm long roots, a negative correlation was found between the number of introgressed S. spontaneum chromosomes and the frequency of cells undergoing replication and mitosis. On the other hand, when roots were already proliferating under steady-state conditions (15 mm long roots) the more S. spontaneum chromosomes the cells possessed, the longer the relative time it took for all chromosomes to replicate and segregate, and the longer the relative time they spent in G2, with the 4C DNA content. The presence of S. spontaneum chromosomes seems to be recognized by these proliferating cells as a stressor which preferentially activates checkpoint pathways operating at the second half of the cycle, but not at its onset.

Abstract

Magnetic measurements were performed on Ferromagnetic/Antiferromagnetic (F/AF) Ca-doped manganite bilayers in order to elucidate the interface contribution to the total magnetic moment. A 10-nm-thick La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (F) film was used as a ferromagnetic layer and a 60-nm-thick La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 (AF) film as an Antiferromagnetic. The low thickness ratio (1/6) allowed us to enhance the magnetic moment effects due to the AF layer. The temperature dependence of the saturation magnetic moment (MS) was studied. MS was extracted from isothermal magnetic hysteresis loops from room temperature down to 10 K. By using the Heisenberg model frame for the saturation magnetization change, a τ5/2 term was found to better describe the experimental data, meaning long-wavelength spin waves dominate the temperature behaviour. By applying a field cooling field (FC), a significant exchange bias field (Hex) was found (around 20 Oe at 10 K). The Hex temperature dependence follows an exponential decay similar to that observed in the F/AF superlattice case.

Abstract

Fat-tree topology has become very popular among switch manufacturers. Routing in fat-trees is composed of two phases, an adaptive upwards phase, and a deterministic downwards phase. The unique downwards path to the destination depends on the switch that has been reached in the upwards phase. As adaptive routing is used in the ascending phase, several output ports are possible at each switch and the final choice depends on the selection function. The impact of the selection function on performance has been previously studied for direct networks and has not resulted to be very important. In fat-trees, the decisions made in the upwards phase by the selection function can be critical, since it determines the switch reached in the upwards phase, and therefore the unique downwards path to the destination. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the selection function on fat-trees. Several selection functions are defined, compared and evaluated. Abstract

Staining with bismuth salts after glutaraldehyde fixation is a very useful technique for preferential detection of phosphorylated nucleoproteins in mammalians and insects. In the present work we report an adaptation of this method for plant nuclei: staining with bismuth salts either in tissue blocks before embedding, or on thin sections of acrylic resin. Both procedures are highly reproducible and give the same pattern of staining in the nuclei in situ or isolated at the electron microscope. The specificity of bismuth binding to the dense nucleolar fibrillar component and interchromatin granules is proven by X-ray microanalysis. The nuclear proteins which bind bismuth have been identified by bismuth and immunostains of blots from total nuclear proteins. This technique is a very useful and specific cytochemical tool for studying nuclear organization and functions in plants.

Abstract

In this paper, details of synthesis and structural, morphological, electrical, and mag-netic characterization of the new La0.37Ca0.17Ba0.43Mn0.52Ti0.44Zr0.04O3 multiferroic complex perovskite are reported. Mixtures with 50% mass of ferromagnetic lanthanum calcium manganite Lao.67Cao.33Mn03 and ferroelectric barium-lanthanum zirconate ti-tanate Ba0.9Lao.067Ti0.91Zr0.09O3 were prepared by the solid state reaction technique. Patterns of X-ray diffraction showed that the materials have reacted resulting in a new perovskite-like structure with tetragonal symmetry, space group Pmrajf 99). The struc-ture of the material was refined using the Rietveld method through the GSAS code. ZFC and FC magnetization curves show the occurrence of two phase transitions at 42.25 K and 203.9 K which have been associated with two different magnetic regimes. Hysteresis curves measured confirm that the relationship between the applied field and the mag-netization does not evidence a linear behavior. These curves also show that in the low temperature regime the magnetic memory of the material is greater than in the high temperature region. AC impedance as a function of temperature measurements show the same two regions observed in the magnetization curves. The ferroelectric behavior with relative permittivity of 153.12 is observed by polarization curves performed at room temperature in the synthesized materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cu-8 wt-%SmCo5 alloys were obtained through mechanical milling for novel industrial applications. Copper and SmCo5 powder mixtures were mechanically alloyed in a planetary ball mill to disperse SmCo5 fine particles in the copper matrix with the aim to modify the structural, mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties. The resulting alloyed powders were characterised as a function of milling time. Under the magnetic field, SmCo5 particles achieved Ms to improve the soft magnetic properties of copper-8 wt-%SmCo5 to be used in dielectromagnetic components. The magnetic properties of Cu-8 wt-%SmCo5 powders reached their optimum values after milling time ranging from 10 to 15 h. The consolidation of milled alloy powders was performed by uniaxial hot pressing at 923 K for 2 h under argon atmosphere to obtain dense compacts. The consolidation process resulted in good dense metal matrix composite materials with adequate properties of compression strength >900 MPa, 95 HRB in hardness, electrical conductivity up to 43% of that of the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) and magnetic properties such as coercive field, saturation and remanent magnetisation obtained at 218 Oe, 70·23 emu g-1 and 6·09 emu g-1 respectively at 300 K. The existence of a coercive field and a little magnetic memory of the consolidated system is a typical behaviour of magnetically soft materials. The variation of electric and magnetic properties and its dependence on structure strength change with milling time were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
