Abstract

A stable generalized complex structure is one that is generically symplectic but degenerates along a real codimension two submanifold, where it defines a generalized Calabi-Yau structure. We introduce a Lie algebroid which allows us to view such structures as symplectic forms. This allows us to construct new examples of stable structures, and also to define period maps for their deformations in which the background three-form flux is either fixed or not, proving the unobstructedness of both deformation problems. We then use the same tools to establish local normal forms for the degeneracy locus and for Lagrangian branes. Applying our normal forms to the four-dimensional case, we prove that any compact stable generalized complex 4-manifold has a symplectic completion, in the sense that it can be modified near its degeneracy locus to produce a compact symplectic 4-manifold.

Abstract

Let C be a complex smooth projective algebraic curve endowed with an action of a finite group G such that the quotient curve has genus at least 3. We prove that if the G-curve C is very general for these properties, then the natural map from the group algebra $${{\mathbb {Q}}}G$$ Q G to the algebra of $${{\mathbb {Q}}}$$ Q -endomorphisms of its Jacobian is an isomorphism. We use this to obtain (topological) properties regarding certain virtual linear representations of a mapping class group. For example, we show that the connected component of the Zariski closure of such a representation often acts $${{\mathbb {Q}}}$$ Q -irreducibly in a G-isogeny space of $$H^1(C; {{\mathbb {Q}}})$$ H 1 ( C ; Q ) and with image a $${{\mathbb {Q}}}$$ Q -almost simple group.

Abstract

When the French mathematician Michel Chasles expressed his ‘principle of correspondence’ in 1864, he claimed to have obtained a theorem from which one could derive a general and systematic method for the effortless obtention of an infinity of geometrical propositions. And yet, barely two decades later, this very theorem was widely regarded as a boring or uninteresting result, whose teaching in universities might ingrain noxious mathematical habits in the minds of young students. In this article, Nicolas Michel uses the principle of correspondence as an example to show how different social contexts for the practice and teaching of science shaped different ways of valuing and measuring the worth of a result.

Abstract

We approach a problem of realising algebraic objects in a certain universal equivariant stable homotopy theory, the global homotopy theory of Schwede (2018). Specifically, for a global ring spectrum R, we consider which classes of ring homomorphisms ηe W πe eR ! Se can be realised by a map ηW R ! S in the category of global R– modules, and what multiplicative structures can be placed on S. If ηe witnesses Se as a projective πe eR–module, then such an η exists as a map between homotopy commutative global R–algebras. If ηe is in addition étale or S0 is a Q–algebra, then η can be upgraded to a map of E1–global R–algebras or a map of G1–R–algebras, respectively. Various global spectra and E1–global ring spectra are then obtained from classical homotopy-theoretic and algebraic constructions, with a controllable global homotopy type.
