151. Scintillation of a Ground-to-Space Laser Illuminator

Abstract

The problem of scintillation of a laser beam because of atmospheric turbulence, which has previously-been studied for a horizontal propagation path, is studied in this paper for a path from a ground-based transmitter to a measurement point in space. The results are presented in terms of the log-amplitude variance Cl(0), from which the intensity variance can be computed. The log-amplitude variance is found to be separable into a strength factor Cls(0) associated with the use of a zero-diameter source, and an aperture factor which measures the reduction of Cl(0) caused by use of a large-aperture transmitter. Values of the aperture factor are calculated.

Abstract

Steady state intravenous tyramine dose pressor-response tests were administered to a patient with bipolar illness during depressed and hypomanic phases of her illness. The greatest tyramine sensitivity while unmedicated occurred when the patient was hypomanic, and the least sensitivity when she was depressed before her first switch. The data raise the possibility that changes in peripheral alpha-adrenergic receptor sensitivity accompany spontaneous mood cycles. Tyramine produced a replicable mood and cognitive alteration only in the infusion closest to the switch from hypomania to depression, suggesting that the CNS may be particularly susceptible to peripheral noradrenergic inputs at specific points in bipolar illness.

Abstract

We present four children with benign paroxymsal torticollis (BPT) and a review of the literature. BPT appears to be a self-Iimited disorder that occurs predominantly in females. The attacks of head tilting usually start in infancy, may recur at varying intervals until the age of 1 to 5 years, and may be confused with other seizures. Other symptoms, such a ataxia and vomiting, may be associated with the attacks of torticollis. Less frequently, infantile migraine also may be associated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective of the research was to perform a design study and feasibility demonstration of a Doppler laser radar system for use in detection of clear air turbulence. Both CW and pulsed radar techniques were investigated to determine applicability to analysis of laser light backscattered from atmospheric molecules and aerosol particles in order to measure macroscopic motion of the air. It was desired to detect wind gusts in excess of 25 feet per second while operating in a jet aircraft at an altitude of approximately 30,000 feet. The program included analysis of design requirements, analysis of light scattering by the atmosphere, a design trade-off study, and an experimental demonstration. It was concluded that, if particulate matter exists at flight altitudes in sufficient concentration and if advances in the laser state of the art permit fabrication of a laser with the required performance, a system with a range of up to 50 nautical miles is feasible. The analysis showed that the system must depend on scattering from aerosol particles and that a pulsed system has significant advantages over a CW system. A system concept is described which employs detection of beat frequencies in the output current of a photodetector resulting from photo-mixing of the backscattered light from two laser pulses illuminating separated volumes of air. An experimental demonstration was attempted which optically combined the light scattered from two streams of smoke moving at different velocities. The scattering volumes were illuminated by focusing the expanded output beam of an argon laser. (Author)

Abstract

In this report, we describe torsion of the spleen in a five-and-a-half-month-old infant, thus far the youngest reported patient in the literature. Celiac angiography and tuftsin determination confirmed the clinical impression that the pathology was confined to the spleen. The infant underwent a splenectomy and made an uneventful recovery.
