Abstract: In the context of radioactive waste disposal related to the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, we study here the diffusion of lanthanide ions in hydroxyapatite. Two materials are considered as a possible migration barrier in the nuclear waste storage process. Lanthanum and europium have been chosen as representative elements of both fission products and actinide elements and were introduced in the apatite targets using ion implantation. The analysis of the evolution of profile distribution as a function of annealing conditions leads to low values of diffusion coefficients. A possible explanation is that the lanthanide ions substitute the calcium ions in the apatite structure and diffuse through these positions. Time-resolved laser induced luminescence measurements show that the europium ions substitute the calcium ions in both hydroxyapatite Ca(I) and Ca(II) sites. Probing the two sites has been performed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in order to precise the europium environment.

Abstract: Several experimental techniques have been developed and tested to improve the wavefront of low-loss mirrors used in the Virgo program. The most elaborated one, called `Corrective Coating Treatment', allows us to reach an R.M.S. wavefront of 1.5 nm at 633 nm on 100-mm diameter high reflectivity mirrors. The next development will be to make the same correction at 1064 nm, wavelength of the Virgo interferometer, on very large silica substrates (350 mm diameter).

Abstract: This article presents an overview of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment. This detector will be installed in the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) in 2005. This paper describes the characteristics of this homogeneous calorimeter made with PbWO/sub 4/ scintillating crystals read out with avalanche photodiodes (barrel) and vacuum phototriodes (endcaps). This calorimeter will play an important role in Higgs physics. (5 refs).

Abstract: We study the electromagnetic field radiated by high-frequency electric currents in infinite conducting cylinders, with longitudinal or solenoidal flows. We show that the behavior of the radiated fields is very different for radiofrequencies and for higher frequencies. When ωa/c is large (where a is the cylinder radius), the radiated power varies very rapidly as a function of the frequency and is almost zero for certain values.

Abstract: SUSYGEN is a Monte Carlo program designed for computing distributions and generating events for MSSM sparticle production in e+ e- collisions. The Supersymmetric (SUSY) mass spectrum may either be supplied by the user, or can alternatively be calculated in two different models of SUSY Breaking: gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking (SUGRA), and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB). The program incorporates the most important production processes and decay modes, including the full set of R-parity violating decays, and the decays to the gravitino in GMSB models. Initial state radiation corrections take into account pT/pL effects in the Structure Function formalism, and an optimised hadronisation interface to JETSET 7.4 including final state radiation is also provided., 68 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: Previous approaches to the photo- and electro-production of strangeness off the proton, based upon effective hadronic Lagrangians, are extended here to incorporate the so called off-shell effects inherent to the fermions with spin >= 3/2. A formalism for intermediate-state, spin 3/2, nucleonic and hyperonic resonances is presented and applied to the processes $\gamma + p ---> K^{+} + \Lambda$, for $E_{\gamma}^{lab}$ e' + K^+ + \Lambda$, as well as the branching ratio for the crossed channel reaction $K^- + p ---> \gamma + \Lambda$, with stopped kaons. Abstract: Using the data collected with the L3 detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 149 pb(-1), the tau longitudinal polarisation has been measured as a function of the production polar angle using the tau decays tau(-) --> h(-)nu(tau) (h = pi,rho,a(1)) and tau(-)-->l(-)(l)nu(tau) (l = e,mu). From this measurement the quantities A(c) and A(tau), which depend on the couplings of the electron and the tau to the Z, are determined to be A(c) = 0.1678 +/- 0.0127 +/- 0.0030 and A(tau) = 0.1476 +/- 0.0088 +/- 0.0062, consistent with the hypothesis of e-tau universality, Under this assumption a value of A(l) = 0.1540 +/- 0.0074 +/- 0.0044 is obtained, yielding the value of the effective weak mixing angle sin(2)(W) = 0.2306 +/- 0.0011. Abstract: The flow of γ-transitions through the superdeformed minimum of 143Eu is investigated by studying the intensities of four different types of γ-rays of superdeformed origin, obtained with a variety of gating conditions. They can all be explained rather well by schematic simulation calculations assuming only well known statistical properties. Information on level density, competition between E1 and E2 strengths and rotational damping width in the SD well is obtained, yielding a rather complete picture of the feeding mechanism into different regions of the second minimum.

Abstract: Secondary ion mass spectrometry based on High energy (MeV) Ar3+ ions and Fast extraction (time-of-flight or TOF) has been used for investigating the prephosphatation contribution to the phosphatation process of silicon steel sample surface. The so-called HSF-SIMS technique allows easy identification and semi-quantification of the Solid material-specific ions such as Na+, Na2OH+, PO−2 and PO−3. A high sensitivity for phosphate species present on steel surfaces is observed, enabling one to study the effects of pre- and post-deposition treatments on the state of the surface phosphate layer. Finally, the prospect for quantitative analysis is demonstrated by the good correlation between measured secondary ion yields and superficial concentration of the deposited phosphate. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: We have searched for evidence of Upsilon production in 3.5 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 detector at LEP in 1991-1995. No signals are observed for the decay chain Z -> Upsilon X; Upsilon -> l+l- (l= e, mu), therefore upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the following Z branching fractions: BR (Z -> Upsilon(1S) X) < 5.5 x 10**-5; BR (Z -> Upsilon(2S) X) < 13.9 x 10**-5; BR (Z -> Upsilon(3S) X) < 9.4 x 10**-5.

Abstract: We report on measurements of the inclusive production of J, $\psi'$ and $\mathrm{\chi_c}$ mesons in hadronic Z decays, based on 3.2 million hadronic events collected using the L3 detector at LEP. The J and $\psi'$ mesons are reconstructed through their decays into lepton pairs, while the $\mathrm{\chi_c}$ mesons are reconstructed via the decay mode $ \mathrm{\chi_c} \rightarrow \mathrm{J} + \gamma $. Abstract: La physique des ions lourds a pour objectif ultime d'étendre le domaine d'application du Modèle Standard de la physique des particules à des systèmes de taille finie, complexes et dynamiques. En particulier, elle vise à comprendre comment apparaissent, à partir des lois microscopiques de la physique des particules élémentaires, des phénomènes collectifs et des propriétés macroscopiques mettant en jeu un grand nombre de degrés de liberté. La réalisation de ce programme scientifique passe par une caractérisation du plasma de quarks et de gluons (QGP), l'état déconfiné de la matière nucléaire qui peut être formé à l'aide de collisions d'ions lourds accélérés à des énergies ultra relativistes. L'expérience ALICE exploite les collisions Pb-Pb, proton-Pb et proton-proton du LHC pour mesurer les propriétés fondamentales du QGP comme, par exemple, la température critique du déconfinement ou les coefficients de transport de la matière déconfinée. L'état QGP de la matière aurait été, selon le modèle cosmologique du Big Bang, l'état de la matière dans l'Univers naissant entre le moment de la transition de phase électrofaible et le moment du confinement, correspondant à une nouvelle transition de phase de la matière. Connaître la structure du QGP ainsi que ses propriétés dynamiques est ainsi un prérequis pour comprendre l'évolution de l'Univers. Une brève introduction au QGP et à la physique des ions lourds est donnée au Chapitre 1. L'équipe ALICE de l'IPN de Lyon a participé au développement de l'expérience ALICE à travers deux contributions. La première est la construction d'un détecteur nommé VZERO, qui se compose de deux hodoscopes de scintillateurs organiques situés de part et d'autre du point d'interaction. La fonction première du VZERO est le déclenchement de bas niveau de l'ensemble de l'expérience ALICE en fournissant également un déclenchement sensible à la densité d'énergie disponible lors de la collision. Les performances de ce détecteur se sont montrées suffisantes pour qu'il devienne un détecteur crucial à l'expérience, permettant la mesure de la luminosité délivrée par le LHC à l'expérience ALICE ainsi que la mesure des caractéristiques géométriques de la collision. Le VZERO est également utilisé pour des mesures relatives à la physique du QGP comme la mesure de la densité de particules chargées produites dans la collision ou la mesure de l'écoulement collectif induit par la présence du QGP. Le détecteur VZERO est décrit au Chapitre 2. Le QGP peut être étudié par le biais de nombreuses observables. Parmi celles-ci, l'étude de la production de muons est l'une des plus prometteuses. En effet, les muons sont produits à toutes les étapes de l'évolution du plasma et, n'interagissant pas fortement avec le milieu créé, s'échappent librement du plasma, nous renseignant ainsi sur les propriétés du milieu à toutes les phases de son évolution. L'expérience ALICE dispose d'un spectromètre à muons permettant ces mesures. La seconde contribution du groupe est le développement d'un système de contrôle de la position des chambres de trajectographie du spectromètre à muons de ALICE, nommé GMS (Geometry Monitoring System). Le système GMS, constitué d'un réseau de senseurs optiques, permet de mesurer les déplacements lents des chambres de trajectographie avec une résolution de l'ordre de 45 microns. Ce système a permis d'atteindre les performances attendues du spectromètre en terme de résolution en impulsion. J'ai eu la chance de participer à toutes les étapes de la construction de ces détecteurs, à leur mise en place et leur utilisation lors du run 1 du LHC (prise de données couvrant les années 2009 - 2013). Le spectromètre à muons et son système d'alignement sont décrits au Chapitre 3. Le groupe ALICE de l'IPNL a une longue histoire scientifique dans l'étude des collisions d'ions lourds. L'équipe a en particulier participé aux expériences NA38, NA50 et NA60 auprès du SPS du CERN. Historiquement, le groupe est donc impliqué dans l'étude du spectre en masse invariante dimuon. Depuis les débuts de la composante Muon de l'expérience ALICE, le groupe a la charge de l'étude de la production des mésons vecteurs de basse masse ( $\rho, \omega, et \theta$ ) dans leur canal de désintégration dimuonique. Les mésons vecteurs de basse masse, et principalement le méson , sont sensibles aux effets de milieu et à la restauration de la symétrie chirale, symétrie spontanément brisée dans QCD aux énergies et densités normales, mais une restauration de celle-ci est prédite par les calculs de QCD sur réseau aux températures atteintes au LHC. L'étude des mésons vecteurs de basse masse est décrite au Chapitre 4. Une nouvelle phase de l'expérience ALICE est devant nous : l'amélioration des détecteurs actuels afin de pouvoir profiter pleinement de la montée en énergie et en luminosité du LHC après 2018. Dans le cadre de ces améliorations, un nouveau détecteur en pixels de silicium (Muon Forward Tracker - MFT) a été proposé et accepté par la collaboration ALICE et le comité LHC, permettant la mesure des muons dans l'acceptance du spectromètre actuel. La mise en concordance des informations provenant du spectromètre à muons d'une part et du MFT d'autre part permettra d'enrichir de façon spectaculaire le programme de physique accessible dans le domaine des muons. Les analyses actuelles seront bien entendues améliorées, mais surtout de nouvelles mesures seront possibles grâce à l'ajout du MFT. Parmi celles-ci nous pouvons citer la possibilité de séparer les J/$\psi$ prompts de ceux provenant de la décroissance de hadrons beaux et ce jusqu'à une impulsion transverse nulle. Le MFT et ses performances attendues sont décrits au Chapitre 5.

Abstract: We consider the Higgs boson decay processes and its production and provide a parameterisation tailored for testing models of new physics. The choice of a particular parameterisation depends on a non-obvious balance of quantity and quality of the available experimental data, envisaged purpose for the parameterisation and degree of model independence. At present only simple parameterisations with a limited number of fit parameters can be performed, but this situation will improve with the forthcoming experimental LHC data. Abstract: This thesis focuses on the improvement of the energy resolution of hadron calorimeters. The approach is based on dual-readout, which consists in the simultaneous detection of both scintillation and Cherenkov light. The comparison of these two signals allows a compensation of the energy uctuations, which are inherent to the detection of hadronic showers. Lutetium Aluminium garnets (LuAG), which are effcient scintillators when activated with rare-earth dopants (i.e. Cerium), can also act as Cherenkov radiators when undoped. Both undoped and doped crystals can then be assembled to build an efficient dual-readout calorimeter. With the objective to investigate the feasibility of this concept, the effects of the doping concentration and the use of various co-dopant on the light output and the timing properties of LuAG were studied. The growth method was demonstrated to induce significant differences in the nature and concentration of structural defects. The optimum geometry, which is based on single-crystals shaped into fibers, favors the micro-pulling down technique. This technology does not outperform Bridgman and Czochralski techniques but was chosen on bases of cost considerations and large scale productions abilities. The optimization of the growth parameters led to the production of single-crystalline fibers of Cerium-doped LuAG with a light output of 8000 photons per MeV and an adequate behavior as light guide due to a well-controlled optical quality. Test with electrons and pions in high energy calorimetry conditions allow to engage a future production of a larger-scale prototype., L'amélioration de la résolution en énergie des calorimètres hadroniques est adressée dans cette thèse. L'approche envisagée se base sur la technique du dual-readout qui consiste à détecter simultanément les radiations Cherenkov et la scintillation. La comparaison de ces deux signaux permet en effet de compenser les fluctuations observées dans la détection de gerbes hadroniques. Les grenats d'Aluminium et de Lutetium (LuAG), qui sont d'efficaces es scintillateurs une fois activés avec des terres rares, peuvent aussi jouer le rôle de radiateur Cherenkov sous leur forme non-dopée. Les deux types de matériaux peuvent alors être assemblés pour former un calorimètre dual-readout performant. Dans l'objectif d'étudier la faisabilité de ce concept, les effets de la concentration en dopant et de l'addition de divers co-dopants sur le rendement lumineux et les propriétés temporelles ont été étudiés. Nous avons montré le rôle important de la technique de croissance choisie sur la nature et la concentration des défauts structuraux. La géométrie optimale, qui se base sur des monocristaux en forme de fibres, donne l'avantage à la technique de micro-pulling down. Cette technologie ne montre pas de meilleurs résultats que les techniques de Bridgman et de Czochralski mais a été retenue pour des raisons de coût et d'adaptabilité pour une production à grande échelle. L'optimisation des paramètres de croissance a permis la production de fibres monocristallines de LuAG dopées avec du Cérium présentant un rendement lumineux de 8000 photons par MeV et un bon comportement en tant que guide de lumière grâce à une qualité optique bien maîtrisée. Des tests avec des faisceaux d'électrons et de pions, en conditions de calorimétrie à haute énergie, permettent désormais d'envisager la production d'un prototype à plus grande échelle.

Abstract: The goal of the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS experiment at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, is to measure directly the Earth's gravitational acceleration on antimatter. To achieve this goal, the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS collaboration will produce a pulsed, cold (100 mK) antihydrogen beam with a velocity of a few 100 m/s and measure the magnitude of the vertical deflection of the beam from a straight path. The final position of the falling antihydrogen will be detected by a position sensitive detector. This detector will consist of an active silicon part, where the annihilations take place, followed by an emulsion part. Together, they allow to achieve 1$%$ precision on the measurement of $\bar{g}$ with about 600 reconstructed and time tagged annihilations. We present here, to the best of our knowledge, the first direct measurement of antiproton annihilation in a segmented silicon sensor, the first step towards designing a position sensitive silicon detector for the AE$\mathrm{\bar{g}}$IS experiment. We also present a first comparison with Monte Carlo simulations (GEANT4) for antiproton energies below 5 MeV, 21 pages in total, 29 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: The work done in this thesis has been made in the development of a proton irradiation platform dedicated for radiobiological studies from the 4 MV Van de Graaff accelerator of the Institut de Physique Nucléaire de Lyon (IPNL). These developments have been made through a close interdisciplinary collaboration between physicists and engineers from IPNL and biologists from the Laboratoire de Radiobiologie Cellulaire et Moléculaire (LRCM, CHU Lyon Sud). To present the development of Radiograaff platform, this manuscript will split into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the basics of hadrontherapy and the scientific context of the project. In the first part of this chapter, we present the interactions between ion and matter in order to better understand the theoretical concepts associated with the hadrons. Then, we present the scientific interests and objectives of the Radiograaff project. The second chapter concerns the instrumental developments of the beam line. After discussing the delivery mode and beam extraction in air and simulation methods that we used to design the theoretical line radiation, we present the dosimetric monitoring system. The chapter 2 is concluded by the results of the evaluation and qualification of the platform. Finally, in the third chapter, after a brief presentation of some aspects of biology and radiobiology, we present the first results on the relative biological effectiveness of protons delivered by the Radiograaff platform. We discuss the protocols, experimental conditions and methods for analysing results, Les travaux effectués au cours de cette thèse ont été réalisés dans le cadre du développement d'une plateforme d'irradiation protons dédiée aux études en radiobiologie (Radiograaff) à partir de l'accélérateur Van de Graaff 4 MV de l'Institut de Physique Nucléaire de Lyon. Ceci, grâce à une collaboration étroite et interdisciplinaire entre les physiciens et ingénieurs de l'Institut de Physique Nucléaire de Lyon (IPNL) et des biologistes du Laboratoire de Radiobiologie Cellulaire et Moléculaire (LRCM) du CHU de Lyon Sud. Afin de présenter le développement de la plateforme Radiograaff, ce manuscrit se découpera en trois chapitres. Le premier chapitre présente les fondements de l'hadronthérapie et le contexte scientifique du projet. Nous traiterons, dans une première partie, de l'interaction ions-matière vivante afin de mieux cerner les concepts théoriques associés à l'hadronthérapie. Et nous présenterons, dans un second temps, les intérêts scientifiques et les objectifs du projet Radiograaff. Le deuxième chapitre concernera les développements instrumentaux de la ligne d'irradiation. Après avoir discuté du mode de délivrance et d'extraction du faisceau ainsi que des méthodes de simulation que nous avons employées pour le dimensionnement théorique la ligne d'irradiation, nous présenterons le système de contrôle de la dosimétrie.
