152. Quantum Gravity and Astrophysics: The Microwave Background and Other Thermal Sources

Abstract

The problem of formulating a fully consistent quantum gravity theory (QGT) has not yet been solved. Even before we are able to work out the details of a complete theory, however, we do know some important qualitative features to be expected in any quantum theory. Fluctuations of the metric, for example, are expected and are associated with fluctuations of the lightcone. Lightcone fluctuations affect the arrival time of signals from distant sources in potentially measurable ways, broadening the spectra. In this paper, we start with a thermal spectrum and derive the form of spectral changes expected in a wide class of QGTs. We apply these results, valid for any thermal spectrum, to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The CMB offers two advantages: (1) deviations from a thermal spectrum are well constrained, and (2) the radiation emanates from the most distant source of light, the surface of last scattering. We use existing CMB data to derive an upper bound on the value of $\Delta t,$ the mean spread in arrival times due to metric fluctuations: ${\Delta t} < 2.1 \times 10^{-14}$ s at the 95% confidence limit. This limit applies to a wide range of QGTs, and falsifies those predicting a larger spread in arrival times. We find this limit rules out at least one QGT, the 5-dimensional theory in which the "extra" dimension is flat. Tests of other models may also be possible, depending on the results of calculations to predict values of \Delta t,$ and also a second time scale, $\tau_c,$ the correlation time, which is the characteristic time scale of the metric fluctuations. Abstract

The residual ranges of (900 + or - 3)-MeV/amu gold nuclei accelerated at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Bevalac have been measured in several different media. The energy of the beam of nuclei was measured directly using a new time-of-flight system. The ranges were measured by absorption in linear wedges of polyethylene, carbon, aluminum, copper, tin, and lead and in circular wedges of polystyrene, aluminum, and gold, and by total absorption in nuclear emulsion. The measured ranges were significantly different from those calculated from the best available theoretical estimates of the energy loss of highly charged nuclei. It is concluded that at present energy losses and residual ranges of relativistic heavy ions in an arbitrary medium cannot be predicted with better than an approximately 2 percent accuracy. more...

An observation of the abundances of cosmic-ray lead and platinum-group nuclei using data from the HEAO-3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment (HNE) which consisted of ion chambers mounted on both sides of a plastic Cherenkov counter (Binns et al., 1981) is reported. Further analysis with more stringent selections, inclusion of additional data, and a calibration at the LBL Bevalac, have allowed the determination of the abundance ratio of lead and the platinum group of elements for particles that had a cutoff rigidity R(c) 5 GV. The observed ratio for Pb/Pt is distinctly lower than that predicted by any of the standard models for cosmic ray sources. It is possible that the difference is not an indication that the cosmic ray source composition is greatly different from that of the solar system, but rather that there is less Pb in the solar system and in the r-process than is assumed in the standard models. more...

Nuclei of Xe-54, Ho-67, Au-79 and U-92 accelerated at the Bevalac to energies between 1200 and 900 MeV/n were stopped in nuclear emulsions. Abstract

An observation of the abundances of cosmic-ray lead-group and platinum-group nuclei is reported, using data from the HEAO 3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment. From an analysis of 580 days of exposure, 322 nuclei were selected with reasonable charge resolution, E at least 1.3 GeV/nucleon and Z at least 50. The data show a defined abundance peak in the 'platinum' region (Z from 74 to 80), a small abundance of 'lead' (Z from 81 to 83), and a significant number of 'secondary' nuclei in the range of Z between 62 and 73. Possible explanations are offered for the deduced ratio in space of 0.25 plus or minus 0.09 for 'Pb/Pt' being distinctly lower than that predicted by any of the standard models for cosmic-ray sources and propagation effects. more...

The LBL Bevalac for the Heavy Nuclei Experiment on HEAO-3, compared the response of a set of laboratory ionization chambers to beams of 26Fe, 36Kr, 54Xe, 67 Ho, and 79Au nuclei at maximum energies ranging from 1666 MeV/amu for Fe to 1049 MeV/amu for Au. The elemental composition of the cosmic-ray source is different from that which has been generally taken as the composition of the solar system. No general enrichment of products of either r-process or s-process nucleosynthesis accounts for the differences over the entire range of ultraheavy elements; specific determination of nucleosynthetic contributions to the differences depends upon an understanding of the nature of any acceleration fractionation. Comparison between the cosmic-ray source abundances and the abundances of C1 and C2 chondritic meteorites suggests the possibility that differences between the cosmic-ray source and the 'standard (C1) solar system' may not be due to acceleration fractionation of the cosmic rays, but may be due instead to a fractionation of the C1 abundances with respect to the interstellar abundances. more...

The residual ranges of Au-197(79) nuclei stopping in nuclear emulsions has been measured for nuclei with an incident energy of 991 MeV/amu. The mean ranges observed are appreciably less than those predicted from measurements made on energetic particles of lower charge. Abstract

The relative abundances of elements in the charge ranges of Z = 75-79 (platinum) and Z = 80-83 (lead) should be a sensitive indication of the contributions of the r- and s-processes in nucleosynthesis. Data from the HEAO 3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment are used to establish abundances, relative to iron, of these elements in the cosmic radiation, as well as the ratio of 'secondary' elements, in the Z = 62-74 range, to the primary lead-platinum elements. These results appear to suggest that either the source abundances are deficient in s-process elements or that they are not organized solely by first ionization potential. In addition, present propagation models can adequately represent the relative abundances of primary and secondary elements. more...

The HEAO-3 Heavy Nuclei Experiment has measured elemental abundances of ultraheavy cosmic rays near earth. The elements with atomic number (Z) in the intervals Z = 44-48 and Z = 62-74 arriving at earth are expected to have significant secondary components. However, their source abundances are unlikely to be low enough to warrant treating them as pure secondaries. A maser amplifier was incorporated into a low noise radiometer designed to measure large-scale anisotropy in the 3 deg K microwave background radiation. To minimize emission by atmospheric water vapor and oxygen, the radiometer is flown in a small balloon to an altitude to 25 km. Three successful flights were made - two from Palestine, Texas and one from Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. Good sky coverage is important to the experiment. Abstract

We examine cosmic ray rejection methodology on data collected from InSb and Si:As detectors. The application of an Up-the-Ramp sampling technique with cosmic ray identification and mitigation is the focus of this study. This technique is valuable for space-based observatories which are exposed to high-radiation environments. We validate the Up-the-Ramp approach on radiation-test data sets with InSb and Si:As detectors which were generated for SIRTF. The Up-the-Ramp sampling method studied in this paper is over 99.9% effective at removing cosmic rays and preserves the structure and photometric quality of the image to well within the measurement error., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

We present an algorithm to optimally process uniformly sampled array image data obtained with a nondestructive readout. The algorithm discards full wells, removes cosmic ray (particle) hits and other glitches, and makes a nearly optimum estimate of the signal on each pixel. The algorithm also compresses the data. The computer requirements are modest, and the results are robust. The results are shown and compared to results of Fowler sampled and processed data. Non-ideal detector performance may require some additional code, but this is not expected to cost much processing time. We present a data simulation package designed to create a series of simulated data samples for a detector with non-destructive sampling capability. The original intent of this software was to provide a method for generating simulated images for the Next Generation Space Telescope, but it is general enough to apply to almost any non-destructive detector or instrument. Abstract

The development of sensitive large format imaging arrays for the infrared promises to provide revolutionary capabilities for space astronomy. For example, the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on SIRTF will use four 256 x 256 arrays to provide background limited high spatial resolution images of the sky in the 3 to 8 micron spectral region. In order to reach the performance limits possible with this generation of sensitive detectors, calibration procedures must be developed so that uncertainties in detector calibration will always be dominated by photon statistics from the dark sky as a major system noise source. In the near infrared, where the faint extragalactic sky is observed through the scattered and reemitted zodiacal light from our solar system, calibration is particularly important. Faint sources must be detected on this brighter local foreground. We present a procedure for calibrating imaging systems and analyzing such data. In our approach, by proper choice of observing strategy, information about detector parameters is encoded in the sky measurements. Proper analysis allows us to simultaneously solve for sky brightness and detector parameters, and provides accurate formal error estimates. This approach allows us to extract the calibration from the observations themselves; little or no additional information is necessary to allow full interpretation of the data. 168. Dithering Strategies for Efficient Self-Calibration of Imaging Arrays

Abstract

With high sensitivity imaging arrays, accurate calibration is essential to achieve the limits of detection of space observatories. One can simultaneously extract information about the scene being observed and the calibration properties of the detector and imaging system from redundant dithered images of a scene. There are large differences in the effectiveness of dithering strategies for allowing the separation of detector properties from sky brightness measurements. In this paper, we quantify these differences by developing a figure of merit (FOM) for dithering procedures based on their usefulness for allowing calibration on all spatial scales. The figure of merit measures how well the gain characteristics of the detector are encoded in the measurements, and is independent of the techniques used to analyze the data. Patterns similar to the antenna arrangements of radio interferometers with good u-v plane coverage, are found to have good figures of merit. We present patterns for both deep surveys of limited sky areas and for shallow surveys. Optimal extraction of pulses of constant known shape from a time series with stationary noise is well understood and Widely used in detection applications. Applications where high resolution is required over a wide range of input signal amplitudes use much of the dynamic range of the sensor, The noise will in general vary over this signal range, and the response may be a nonlinear function of the energy input.
