Waves and wave breaking are important to many deep and shallow water processes. We describe the wavedrifter, an in situ water-following inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based drifter that measures wave steepening and overturning kinematics, and the subsequent transition to turbulence. The wavedrifter has 5 cm diameter, 77 g mass, and 0.84 saltwater specific gravity. GPS provides time synchronization. MATLAB's Attitude, Heading, Reference System (AHRS) library provides wavedrifter orientation. Laboratory experiments quantify the wavedrifter vertical oscillation mode, water following properties, and ability to reproduce wave spectra for small, $f = 1.5$ f = 1.5 Hz waves. The wavedrifter observed wave overturning and the transition to turbulence at the Surf Ranch wave basin. Synchronized video observations provide context. The upper-back of the overturn had large ($ \approx 4g$ ≈ 4 g) accelerations and $14g$ 14 g acceleration magnitude occurs with the impact of the overturning jet. Trajectories reveal the Lagrangian structure of the overturn and subsurface vortex. Although it has limitations, the wavedrifter is a powerful in situ tool to probe wave processes. The tendency of political journalists to form insular groups or packs, chasing the same angles and quoting the same sources, is a well-documented issue in journalism studies and has long been criticized for its role in groupthink and homogenous news coverage. This groupthink attracted renewed criticism after the unexpected victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election as the campaign coverage had indicated a likely win by the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. This pattern was repeated in the 2017 UK election when the Conservative party lost their majority after a campaign in which the news coverage had pointed to an overall Tory victory. Such groupthink is often attributed to homophily, the tendency of individuals to interact with those most like them, and while homophily in the legacy media system is well-studied, there is little research around homophily in the hybrid media system, even as social media platforms like Twitter facilitate the development—and analysis—of virtual political journalism packs. This study, which compares Twitter interactions among US and UK political reporters in the 2016 and 2017 national elections, shows that political journalists are overwhelmingly more likely to use Twitter to interact with other journalists, particularly political journalists, and that their offline tendencies to form homogenous networks have transferred online. There are some exceptions around factors such as gender, news organizations and types of news organization—and important distinctions between types of interactions—but overall the study provides evidence of sustained homophily as journalists continue to normalize Twitter.

The increasing role that new technologies play in intimate relationships has led to the emergence of a new form of couple violence, cyber dating abuse, especially among adolescents and young adults. Although this phenomenon has received increased attention, no research has investigated predictors of cyber dating abuse taking into account the interdependence of the two partners. The study examines adverse childhood experiences (abuse, neglect, and witnessed intimate partner violence) and early maladaptive schemas (emotional deprivation and abandonment) as possible predictors of young adults’ perpetrated and suffered cyber dating abuse. Adopting a dyadic approach, mediational models in which adverse childhood experiences were assumed to be related to individual and partner’s cyber dating abuse through individual early maladaptive schemas were tested. 134 couples completed online self-reports of the variables of interest, including a bidimensional measure of cyber dating abuse assessing pressure-aggression and control-monitoring. Actor-partner interdependence mediation model analyses were conducted. Results indicated that the emotional deprivation schema mediated the association between adverse childhood experiences and cyber dating abuse, whereas the abandonment schema did not. Specifically, more frequent experiences of emotional abuse and physical neglect during childhood were indirectly related to increased likelihood of perpetrating cyber dating pressure-aggression as well as of perpetrating and suffering cyber dating control-monitoring in both males and females. These associations were mediated by a stronger internalization of the emotional deprivation schema and were supported by both self-reported and partner-reported data. Also, a strong and direct association was found between childhood exposure to intimate partner violence by the opposite-sex parent and cyber dating pressure-aggression by females or control-monitoring by both males and females. These findings help to clarify the potential negative effects of specific adverse childhood experiences and early maladaptive schemas on the tendency to perpetrate and suffer cyber abuse in romantic relationships. The implications for prevention and treatment programs are noted and avenues for future research are described.

We describe the Sketch-and-Stitch method for bringing together a cognitive model and EEG to reconstruct the cognition of a subject. The method was tested in the context of a video game where the actions are highly interdependent and variable: simply changing whether a key was pressed or not for a 30th of a second can lead to a very different outcome. The Sketch level identifies the critical events in the game and the Stitch level fills in the detailed actions between these events. The critical events tend to produce robust EEG signals and the cognitive model provides probabilities of various transitions between critical events and the distribution of intervals between these events. This information can be combined in a hidden semi-Markov model that identifies the most probable sequence of critical events and when they happened. The Stitch level selects detailed actions from an extensive library of model games to produce these critical events. The decision about which sequence of actions to select from the library is made on the basis of how well they would produce weaker aspects of the EEG signal. The resulting approach can produce quite compelling replays of actual games from the EEG of a subject.

Although burnout is a risk factor for various negative mental and physical outcomes, its prevention is hampered by the stigma associated with burnout. The current research therefore reports on the initial development and validation of a novel measure of perceived burnout stigma. Study 1 (n = 318) describes the construction and initial evaluation of scale items derived from established mental health stigma and burnout scales. Study 2 (n = 705) then replicated the burnout stigma factor structure established in the initial study. Additionally, it evaluates relationships between occupational and school burnout stigma and indicators of mental health. Hierarchical multiple regressions showed that burnout stigma accounted for variance in depression, anxiety, and stress over and beyond that of burnout. Study 3 (n = 682) extended these findings via cross-lagged and bidirectional models, demonstrating that burnout stigma predicted mental health indicators 6 weeks later. Study 4 (n = 717) supplemented earlier exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using item response theory to further demonstrate that perceived burnout stigma is a unidimensional construct potentially applicable to both work and school settings. Overall, the current research resulted in an eight-item burnout stigma instrument (BSI-8) with excellent psychometric properties that predicts indicators of mental health.

The current research reports both latent profile (person-oriented) and item response theory (IRT) analyses of the School Burnout Inventory (SBI) in United States undergraduate samples. Study 1 (n = 1,007) comprises a latent profile analysis (LPA) that identified four mutually exclusive subgroups based on patterns of school burnout responses. Covariate analyses of grade point average and negative affect suggested that school burnout profiles function similarly to variable-oriented approaches. Study 2 (n = 544) explored longitudinal patterns of school burnout among college students via use of a repeated measures LPA. Findings suggested that the profiles identified reflect a relatively stable school burnout trajectory over time. Covariate analysis of sleep quality and academic engagement demonstrated differences across profiles, but the patterns were similar to variable-oriented statistical approaches. Study 3 (n = 2,364) utilized an IRT analysis of the SBI to identify a short, efficient measure. Item information curves and graded response model item discrimination parameters identified a 4-item SBI scale (SBI-4) that offered reasonably high levels of information for assessing school burnout in comparison to the original nine-item SBI. Implications and future research are identified.

Summary: Metabolic disorder has been suggested to underlie Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the decisive molecular linkages remain unclear. We discovered that human Molybdopterin Synthase Associating Complex, MPTAC, promotes sulfur amino acid catabolism to prevent oxidative damage from excess sulfur amino acids, which, in turn, advances fatty acid oxidation and acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) synthesis. The association of MPTAC with Protein arginine (R) Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) complex and small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (SNRP) splicing factors enables SNRPs to sense metabolic states through their methylation. This promotes the splicing fidelity of amyloid precursor protein (APP) pre-mRNA and proper APP fragmentation, abnormalities of which have been observed in the platelets of AD patients. The functions of MPTAC are crucial to maintain expression of drebrin 1, which is required for synaptic plasticity, through prevention from oxidative damage. Thus, adjustment of sulfur amino acid catabolism by MPTAC prevents events that occur early in the onset of AD. : Suganuma et al. show that the regulation of sulfur amino acid catabolism by MPTAC suppresses ROS generation and is crucial for the splicing fidelity of APP mRNA, maintaining synaptic plasticity. Thus, MPTAC prevents events that occur early in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Catholic schools. has articulated There are concerns that the curriculum of Catholic schools has been increasingly dominated by pressures to conform to a programme of education legitimised by an intrusive secular state and designated as a ‘national curriculum’. Accordingly, the curriculum of Catholic maintained schools is regulated within a standardised framework that is directed by government. Contentiously, it has been asserted that, as a result, the curriculum in Catholic schools in England has effectively been ‘de-Catholicised’. This claim has been contested. For example, it is maintained that the matter is more nuanced than this and the situation cannot be interpreted in such an unequivocal way. However, it might well be asked: what should a Catholic curriculum look like? In the face of this question, leaders in Catholic schools are encouraged to consider renewing and restoring a distinctive curriculum by permeating it systematically with the principles of Catholic social teaching. Ultimately, the writer argues, the curriculum of Catholic schools should provide students with an understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
