Abstract

Se ha realizado un estudio experimental en 25 híbridos de conejo californiano con conejo blanco gigante neozelandés de 37 ± 3 días, lesionando la vascularización metamé- rica que irriga las vértebras lumbares con el propósito de alterar indirectamente el desarrollo de los cartílagos neurocentrales (CNC). La lesión vascular se produjo por la destrucción unilateral a dos o tres niveles de los vasos metaméricos de las vértebras L3 a L5. Las columnas vertebrales fueron disecadas, realizándose estudios radiológicos, macroscópicos e histológicos. Se obtuvieron curvas escolióticas (13 ±4°) de convexidad hacia el lado contrario al intervenido, con rotación de los cuerpos vertebrales (12 ± 5o ) hacia la concavidad de la curva, y rectificación de la cifosis lumbar fisiológica de los conejos (5 ±7°). El ascpecto macroscópico de las curvas era similar al que se observa en la escoliosis idiopática humana. Estos hallazgos apoyan la idea de que una alteración del desarrollo del CNC por déficit vascular, de forma unilateral, es capaz de inducir la aparición de una escoliosis. We have damaged the vascular supply to the right neurocentral cartilage (NCC) to 25 growing rabbits, in order to induce scoliosis. The employed technique was the section of the right metameric artery and vein at two or three levels in the lumbar region (L3 to L5). The spine was studied histologically macroscopically and radiologically. We got slight curves (13 ±4°) with the convexity towards the opposite side to the operated zone, and with rotation (12 ±5°) and lordosis (5 ± 7°). These lesions are similar to human idiopathic scoliosis and may be explained because of the NCC's physiological properties. Those findings support the idea that any mechanic, metabolic or endocrine alteration that cause damage to the NCC or to its vascularization, unilaterally, will induced a scoliosis development.

Abstract

Objectives: Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is a frequently used signal processing approach which adaptively decomposes a signal into a set of narrow-band components known as intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). For multi-trial, multivariate (multiple simultaneous recordings), and multi-subject analyses the number and signal properties of the IMFs can deviate from each other between trials, channels and subjects. A further processing of IMFs, e.g. a simple ensemble averaging, should determine which IMFs of one signal correspond to IMFs from another signal. When the signal properties have similar characteristics, the IMFs are assigned to each other. This problem is known as correspondence problem.Methods: From the mathematical point of view, in some cases the correspondence problem can be transformed into an assignment problem which can be solved e.g. by the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm (KMA) by which a minimal cost matching can be found. We use the KMA for solving classic assignment problems, i.e. the pairwise correspondence between two sets of IMFs of equal cardinalities, and for pairwise correspondences between two sets of IMFs with different cardinalities representing an unbalanced assignment problem which is a special case of the k-cardinality assignment problem.Results: A KMA-based approach to solve the correspondence problem was tested by using simulated, heart rate variability (HRV), and EEG data. The KMA-based results of HRV decomposition are compared with those obtained from a hierarchical cluster analysis (state-of-the-art). The major difference between the two approaches is that there is a more consistent assignment pattern using KMA. Integrating KMA into complex analysis concepts enables a comprehensive exploitation of the key advantages of the EMD. This can be demonstrated by non-linear analysis of HRV-related IMFs and by an EMD-based cross-frequency coupling analysis of the EEG data.Conclusions: The successful application to HRV and EEG analysis demonstrates that our solutions can be used for automated EMD-based processing concepts for biomedical signals. Abstract

A cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) was developed for the installation of curtain wall modules (CWM). The research addressed the question of whether the CDPR was capable installing CWMs with sufficient accuracy while being competitive compared to conventional manual methods. In order to develop and test such a system, a conceptual framework that consisted of three sub-systems was defined. The tests, carried out in two close-to-real demonstration buildings, revealed an absolute accuracy of the CWM installation of 4 to 23 mm. The working time for installing a CWM was reduced to 0.51 h. The results also show that the system is competitive for a workspace greater than 96 m2 compared to conventional manual methods. However, improvements such as reducing the hours for setting up the CDPR on the one hand and achieving a faster and more robust MEE on the other hand will be still necessary in the future. • Design, construction and validation of a cable-driven robot for on-site construction. • Successful real environment tests for installing Curtain Wall Modules and brackets. • Bracket placement only presented deviations of approximately 2 mm. • Curtain wall installation was achieved with sufficient accuracy. • The system is competitive in façade workspaces with more than 100 curtain wall modules.
