Abstract

Unique methods for analyzing individual particles ranging in size from 0.01 to 1000 micrometers have been developed for investigation of nature of cosmic dust. Methods are applicable to particulate aerosols and contaminants characteristically encountered in studies of air pollution and in experiments designed to abate pollution.

Abstract

Four classified types of particles in stratospheric balloon collections include chains, aggregates, crystals, and irregular solids which are often liquid coated. An analysis has been made of many individual particles using an X-ray detector on a scanning electron microscope. Chain type particles are composed entirely of elements lighter than sodium. All other particle types are composed mostly of various combinations of the elements Al, Si, Na, K, Ca, Fe, Mg, Ti, and S. The most common element group is Al, Si, Ca or K, and Fe, followed by sulfur or calcium alone. At lower altitudes (12-15 km), liquid is usually associated with the particles and sulfur is prominent. At higher altitudes (23-36 km), liquids and sulfur are usually absent. However, when liquids are occasionally found, so is sulfur. Particles collected with NASA aircraft at 12 km also contain mostly the Al, Si, Ca, Fe element group with associated sulfur, or sulfur alone.

Abstract

A tyrosine protein kinase (TPK) partially purified and two co-purified proteins (pp39 and pp44) from HL-60 cells were used as a basis for a SDS-PAGE electrophoresis screening test of inhibitors of the activity catalyzed by this enzyme. Such inhibitors may constitute a new class of anticancer agents. TPK is a protein of about 32 to 35 kDa as measured by gel-sizing exclusion. This enzyme is apparently the main tyrosine protein kinase from the cytosol of HL-60 cells. The test was assessed using known inhibitors of various types of protein kinases. Erbstatin and Cibcron Blue--a nucleotide analog--were shown to be potent inhibitors of TPK activity.

Abstract

Serotonin N -acetyltransferase (arylalkylamine N -acetyltransferase, AANAT) is the penultimate enzyme in melatonin (5-methoxy- N -acetyltryptamine) biosynthesis. It is the key-enzyme responsible of the nocturnal rhythm of melatonin production in the pineal gland. Specific AANAT inhibitors could be useful for treatment of different physiopathological disorders encountered in diseases such as seasonal affective disorders or obesity. On the basis of previous works and 3D-QSAR studies carried out in our laboratory, we have synthesized and evaluated four novel benzo[b]thiophene derivatives designed as AANAT inhibitors. Compound 13 exhibited high inhibitory activity (IC 50 =1.4 μM) and low affinities for both MT 1 (1100 nM) and MT 2 (1400 nM) receptors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
