In this paper, nonequilibrium capillary electrophoresis (NECE) was attempted for the first time to investigate a dual equilibrium system, where the intramolecular G-quadruplex folding was in competition with the intermolecular duplex formation. Samples of an equilibrium mixture of human telomeric DNA and its complementary strands were separated in capillaries under nonequilibrium conditions without [K.sup.+]. Polyethylene oxide was added to the running buffer facilitating the separation of single-stranded DNA, duplex, and G-quadruplex. Thus, the folding/unfolding rate constants of the G-quadruplex and the association/dissociation constants of the duplex could be simultaneously derived from the same experiment. Results indicated that the duplex formation induced minimal influence on the G-quadruplex folding. On the basis of the kinetic characterization of the G-quadruplex at varying temperatures, the thermodynamic parameters of the G-quadruplex could also be determined. Thus, the NECE method provided a new avenue for studying the kinetics and thermodynamics of nucleic acids within dual equilibrium systems with significant advantages of extreme-low sample cost ([~10.sup.-18] mol) and high repeatability.

We have fabricated electrochemical electrodes in picoliter-sized wells for measuring catecholamine release from individual cells with millisecond resolution. Each well-electrode roughly conforms to the shape of the cell in order to capture a large fraction of released catecholamine with high time resolution. Using this device, we can resolve spikes in amperometric current corresponding to quantal catecholamine release via exocytosis. In addition, we have combined amperometric recording on the chip with patch-clamp recordings of membrane capacitance as an assay of exocytosis. A quantitative comparison of the two methods suggests that a large fraction of catecholamine release is oxidized on the surface of the well-electrode. This technology has applications in cell-based biosensor development, high-throughput screening of drugs, and basic science investigations.

The 1‐year mortality and health consequences of COVID‐19 in cancer patients are relatively underexplored. In this multicenter cohort study, 166 COVID‐19 patients with cancer were compared with 498 non‐cancer COVID‐19 patients and 498 non‐COVID cancer patients. The 1‐year all‐cause mortality and hospital mortality rates in Cancer COVID‐19 Cohort (30% and 20%) were significantly higher than those in COVID‐19 Cohort (9% and 8%, both P <.001) and Cancer Cohort (16% and 2%, both P < 0.001). The 12‐month all‐cause post‐discharge mortality rate in survival discharged Cancer COVID‐19 Cohort (8%) was higher than that in COVID‐19 Cohort (0.4%, P <.001) but similar to that in Cancer Cohort (15%, P =.084). The incidence of sequelae in Cancer COVID‐19 Cohort (23%, 26/114) is similar to that in COVID‐19 Cohort (30%, 130/432, P =.13). The 1‐year all‐cause mortality was high among patients with hematologic malignancies (59%), followed by those who have nasopharyngeal, brain, and skin tumors (45%), digestive system neoplasm (43%), and lung cancers (32%). The rate was moderate among patients with genitourinary (14%), female genital (13%), breast (11%), and thyroid tumors (0). COVID‐19 patients with cancer showed a high rate of in‐hospital mortality and 1‐year all‐cause mortality, but the 12‐month all‐cause post‐discharge mortality rate in survival discharged cancer COVID‐19 patients was similar to that in Cancer Cohort. Comparing to COVID‐19 Cohort, risk stratification showed that hematologic, nasopharyngeal, brain, digestive system, and lung tumors were high risk (44% vs 9%, P < 0.001), while genitourinary, female genital, breast, and thyroid tumors had moderate risk (10% vs 9%, P =.85) in COVID‐19 Cancer Cohort. Different tumor subtypes had different effects on COVID‐19. But if cancer patients with COVID‐19 manage to survive their COVID‐19 infections, then long‐term mortality appears to be similar to the cancer patients without COVID‐19, and their long‐term clinical sequelae were similar to the COVID‐19 patients without cancer. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory, metabolic, and epigenetic disease, which leads to the life-threatening coronary artery disease. Emerging studies from bench to bedside have demonstrated the pivotal role of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. This article hereby reviews oxidation mechanism of LDL, and the pro-atherogenic and biomarker role of oxidized LDL in atherosclerosis. We also review the pharmacological effects of several representative natural products (vitamin E, resveratrol, quercetin, probucol, tanshinone IIA, epigallocatechin gallate, and Lycopene) in protecting against LDL oxidation and atherosclerosis. Clinical and basic research supports the beneficial effects of these natural products in inhibiting LDL oxidation and preventing atherosclerosis, but the data are still controversial. This may be related to factors such as the population and the dosage and time of taking natural products involved in different studies. With the increasing depth of underground engineering, the risk of coal–rock dynamic disasters such as rockburst is becoming more and more serious and complex, which seriously threatens the safety of coal resource, mine production and the surface ecological environment. However, the existing risk indices and methods used for evaluating rockburst risk cannot be fully applied to deep goal seam group (DCG) mining. For the safe exploitation of coal resources, in this paper, based on statistical analyses of 300 cases of rockburst, six new indices are proposed for evaluating rockburst risk in the DCG, namely dip angle, moisture content, stability of coal seam, advancing speed of working face, disturbance factors and support patterns. In addition, the influence of multiple factors coupling and superposition on rockburst risk was considered. Thus, the Comprehensive Index Method of rockburst risk of Deep Coal seam Group (DCG–CIM) based on analytic hierarchy process was established. Finally, rockburst risk in the evaluation area was quantitatively assessed into four grades, including "No rockburst risk", "Weak rockburst risk", "Medium rockburst risk" and "Strong rockburst risk". Taking the 2233 working face of Hengda Coalmine as an example, the evaluation results show that the ranges of 0–184 m, 224–284 m, 324–384 m, 424–484 m, 524–584 m and 594–624 m from terminal line of haulage roadway on 2233 working face were the medium rockburst risk zones, which are in accordance with the on-site impact damage results and are more accurate than the traditional method. The DCG–CIM can consider more inducing factors and obtain more accurate and reliable evaluation results and is more suitable for deep coal seam group mining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
