Abstract

Relapsed or refractory pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with poor outcomes and relapse risk prediction approaches have not changed significantly in decades. To build a robust transcriptional risk prediction model for pediatric AML, we perform RNA-sequencing on 1503 primary diagnostic samples. While a 17 gene leukemia stem cell signature (LSC17) is predictive in our aggregated pediatric study population, LSC17 is no longer predictive within established cytogenetic and molecular (cytomolecular) risk groups. Therefore, we identify distinct LSC signatures on the basis of AML cytomolecular subtypes (LSC47) that were more predictive than LSC17. Based on these findings, we build a robust relapse prediction model within a training cohort and then validate it within independent cohorts. Here, we show that LSC47 increases the predictive power of conventional risk stratification and that applying biomarkers in a manner that is informed by cytomolecular profiling outperforms a uniform biomarker approach.

Abstract

A rotation curve inequality that holds for spherically symmetric mass distributions is derived, and tested against the SPARC galaxy rotation curves dataset. We identify several Galaxies, eg NGC7793 and UGC05253, which are candidates for hosting non-spherical dark matter structures that could be detected by more precise measurements.

Abstract

At any epoch, particle physics must be open to completely unexpected discoveries, and that is reason enough to extend the reach of searches for ultra-high energy (UHE) photons. The observation of a population of photons with energies $E \gtrsim 100$ EeV would for example imply the existence of either a completely new physical phenomena, or particle acceleration mechanisms heretofore never seen or imagined. But as we outline in this Letter of Interest, there are also good arguments for super-heavy dark matter (SHDM) in a parameter range such that it could be discovered via its decays to, in particular, UHE photons. Only ultra-high energy cosmic ray observatories have capabilities to detect UHE photons. We first investigate how current and future observations can probe and constrain SHDM models in important directions, and then outline some of the scenarios that motivate such searches. Abstract

We use the galaxy rotation curves in the SPARC database to compare 9 different dark matter and modified gravity models on an equal footing, paying special attention to the stellar mass-to-light ratios. We compare three non-interacting dark matter models, a self interacting DM (SIDM) model, two hadronically interacting DM (HIDM) models, and three modified Newtonian dynamics type models: MOND, Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR) and a maximal-disk model. The models with DM-gas interactions generate a disky component in the dark matter, which significantly improves the fits to the rotation curves compared to all other models except an Einasto halo; the MOND-type models give significantly worse fits., Comment: We fixed a typo in eq A3, added fig 6 and updated fig 1 and fig 8 with two galaxy subsets of high and low inclinations

155. The Impact of Frequent, Targeted One-to-One Conversations on Special Education Learning Support

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of structured, five-to-seven-minute, one-to-one conversations every other day between the special educator and each student. Retrospective cohort analysis of six years of student grade point average data was used to measure the effect of the one-to-one conversations. Statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement (Cohen's effect +0.83) in academic outcomes in the one-to-one conversations cohort as compared to student outcomes prior to the course and versus the control cohort. These increases persisted in the after-transition period (Cohen's effect +0.99). Data from student feedback surveys revealed that students perceived one-to-one conversations as helpful and self-identified gains in self-reflection and independence. These results and their implications for future research and practice are described.

Abstract

Abstract Background Childhood dementias are a group of rare and ultra-rare paediatric conditions clinically characterised by enduring global decline in central nervous system function, associated with a progressive loss of developmentally acquired skills, quality of life and shortened life expectancy. Traditional research, service development and advocacy efforts have been fragmented due to a focus on individual disorders, or groups classified by specific mechanisms or molecular pathogenesis. There are significant knowledge and clinician skill gaps regarding the shared psychosocial impacts of childhood dementia conditions. This systematic review integrates the existing international evidence of the collective psychosocial experiences of parents of children living with dementia. Methods We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We systematically searched four databases to identify original, peer-reviewed research reporting on the psychosocial impacts of childhood dementia, from the parent perspective. We synthesised the data into three thematic categories: parents’ healthcare experiences, psychosocial impacts, and information and support needs. Results Nineteen articles met review criteria, representing 1856 parents. Parents highlighted extensive difficulties connecting with an engaged clinical team and navigating their child’s rare, life-limiting, and progressive condition. Psychosocial challenges were manifold and encompassed physical, economic, social, emotional and psychological implications. Access to coordinated healthcare and community-based psychosocial supports was associated with improved parent coping, psychological resilience and reduced psychological isolation. Analysis identified a critical need to prioritize access to integrated family-centred psychosocial supports throughout distinct stages of their child’s condition trajectory. Conclusion This review will encourage and guide the development of evidence-based and integrated psychosocial resources to optimise quality of life outcomes for of children with dementia and their families.

Abstract

Abstract Glycogen storage type V (GSD V—McArdle Syndrome) is a rare neuromuscular disorder characterised by severe pain early after the onset of physical activity. A recent series indicated a diagnostic delay of 29 years; hence reports of children affected by the disorder are uncommon (Lucia et al., 2021, Neuromuscul Disord, 31, 1296–1310). This paper presents eight patients with a median onset age of 5.5 years and diagnosis of 9.5 years. Six patients had episodes of rhabdomyolysis with creatine kinase elevations >50 000 IU/L. Most episodes occurred in relation to eccentric non‐predicted activities rather than regular exercise. One of the patients performed a non‐ischaemic forearm test. One patient was diagnosed subsequent to a skeletal muscle biopsy, and all had confirmatory molecular genetic diagnosis. Three were homozygous for the common PYGM:c.148C > T (p.Arg50*) variant. All but one patient had truncating variants. All patients were managed with structured exercise testing to help them identify ‘second‐wind’, and plan an exercise regimen. In addition all also had an exercise test with 25 g maltodextrin which had statistically significant effect on ameliorating ratings of perceived exertion. GSD V is under‐recognised in paediatric practice. Genetic testing can readily diagnose the condition. Careful identification of second‐wind symptomatology during exercise with the assistance of a multi‐disciplinary team, allows children to manage activities and tolerate exercise. Maltodextrin can be used for structured exercise, but excessive utilisation may lead to weight gain. Early intervention and education may improve outcomes into adult life.

Abstract

Abstract Background Cervical traumatic spinal cord injury is a devastating condition. Current management (bony decompression) may be inadequate as after acute severe TSCI, the swollen spinal cord may become compressed against the surrounding tough membrane, the dura. DISCUS will test the hypothesis that, after acute, severe traumatic cervical spinal cord injury, the addition of dural decompression to bony decompression improves muscle strength in the limbs at 6 months, compared with bony decompression alone. Methods This is a prospective, phase III, multicenter, randomized controlled superiority trial. We aim to recruit 222 adults with acute, severe, traumatic cervical spinal cord injury with an American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale grade A, B, or C who will be randomized 1:1 to undergo bony decompression alone or bony decompression with duroplasty. Patients and outcome assessors are blinded to study arm. The primary outcome is change in the motor score at 6 months vs. admission; secondary outcomes assess function (grasp, walking, urinary + anal sphincters), quality of life, complications, need for further surgery, and mortality, at 6 months and 12 months from randomization. A subgroup of at least 50 patients (25/arm) also has observational monitoring from the injury site using a pressure probe (intraspinal pressure, spinal cord perfusion pressure) and/or microdialysis catheter (cord metabolism: tissue glucose, lactate, pyruvate, lactate to pyruvate ratio, glutamate, glycerol; cord inflammation: tissue chemokines/cytokines). Patients are recruited from the UK and internationally, with UK recruitment supported by an integrated QuinteT recruitment intervention to optimize recruitment and informed consent processes. Estimated study duration is 72 months (6 months set-up, 48 months recruitment, 12 months to complete follow-up, 6 months data analysis and reporting results). Discussion We anticipate that the addition of duroplasty to standard of care will improve muscle strength; this has benefits for patients and carers, as well as substantial gains for health services and society including economic implications. If the addition of duroplasty to standard treatment is beneficial, it is anticipated that duroplasty will become standard of care. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory, at present the largest cosmic-ray observatory ever built, is instrumented with a ground array of 1600 water-Cherenkov detectors, known as the Surface Detector (SD). The SD samples the secondary particle content (mostly photons, electrons, positrons and muons) of extensive air showers initiated by cosmic rays with energies ranging from $10^{17}~$eV up to more than $10^{20}~$eV. Measuring the independent contribution of the muon component to the total registered signal is crucial to enhance the capability of the Observatory to estimate the mass of the cosmic rays on an event-by-event basis. However, with the current design of the SD, it is difficult to straightforwardly separate the contributions of muons to the SD time traces from those of photons, electrons and positrons. In this paper, we present a method aimed at extracting the muon component of the time traces registered with each individual detector of the SD using Recurrent Neural Networks. We derive the performances of the method by training the neural network on simulations, in which the muon and the electromagnetic components of the traces are known. We conclude this work showing the performance of this method on experimental data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We find that our predictions agree with the parameterizations obtained by the AGASA collaboration to describe the lateral distributions of the electromagnetic and muonic components of extensive air showers., Comment: Published version, 23 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the fluctuations in the number of muons in extensive air showers produced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We find that the measured fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions from air shower simulations. This observation provides new insights into the origin of the previously reported deficit of muons in air shower simulations and constrains models of hadronic interactions at ultrahigh energies. Our measurement is compatible with the muon deficit originating from small deviations in the predictions from hadronic interaction models of particle production that accumulate as the showers develop., Comment: Published version, 11 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Supplemental material appended

Abstract

FRAM (F/Photometric Robotic Atmospheric Monitor) is a robotic telescope operated at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina for the purposes of atmospheric monitoring using stellar photometry. As a passive system which does not produce any light that could interfere with the observations of the fluorescence telescopes of the observatory, it complements the active monitoring systems that use lasers. We discuss the applications of stellar photometry for atmospheric monitoring at optical observatories in general and the particular modes of operation employed by the Auger FRAM. We describe in detail the technical aspects of FRAM, the hardware and software requirements for a successful operation of a robotic telescope for such a purpose and their implementation within the FRAM system., Comment: Published version, 27 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The Auger Muon Infill Ground Array (AMIGA) is part of the AugerPrime upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory. It consists of particle counters buried 2.3 m underground next to the water-Cherenkov stations that form the 23.5 km$^2$ large infilled array. The reduced distance between detectors in this denser area allows the lowering of the energy threshold for primary cosmic ray reconstruction down to about 10$^{17}$ eV. At the depth of 2.3 m the electromagnetic component of cosmic ray showers is almost entirely absorbed so that the buried scintillators provide an independent and direct measurement of the air showers muon content. This work describes the design and implementation of the AMIGA embedded system, which provides centralized control, data acquisition and environment monitoring to its detectors. The presented system was firstly tested in the engineering array phase ended in 2017, and lately selected as the final design to be installed in all new detectors of the production phase. The system was proven to be robust and reliable and has worked in a stable manner since its first deployment., Comment: Accepted for publication at JINST. Abstract

Modern Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are commonly fabricated from either Al or Nb electrodes, with an in-situ oxidation process to create a weak link between them. However, common problems of such planar nano- and micro-SQUIDs are hysteretic current-voltage curves, and a shallow flux modulation depth. Here, we demonstrate the formation of both Josephson junctions and SQUIDs using a dry transfer technique to stack and deterministically misalign flakes of NbSe$_{2}$; allowing one to overcome these issues. The Josephson dynamics of the resulting twisted NbSe$_{2}$-NbSe$_{2}$ junctions are found to be sensitive to the misalignment angle of the crystallographic axes. A single lithographic process was then implemented to shape the Josephson junction into a SQUID geometry with typical loop areas of $\simeq$ 25 $\mu m^{2}$ and weak links $\simeq$ 600 nm wide. These devices display large stable current and voltage modulation depths of up to $\Delta I_{c} \simeq$ 75$\%$ and $\Delta V \simeq$ 1.4 mV respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are atomic nuclei from space with vastly higher energies than any other particles ever observed. Their origin and chemical composition remain a mystery. As we show here, the large- and intermediate-angular-scale anisotropies observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory are a powerful tool for understanding the origin of UHECRs. Without specifying any particular production mechanism, but only postulating that the source distribution follows the matter distribution of the local Universe, a good accounting of the magnitude, direction and energy dependence of the dipole anisotropy at energies above $8 \times 10^{18}$ eV is obtained, after taking into account the impact of energy losses during propagation (the "GZK horizon"), diffusion in extragalactic magnetic field and deflections in the Galactic magnetic field (GMF). This is a major step toward the long-standing hope of using UHECR anisotropies to constrain UHECR composition and magnetic fields. The observed dipole anisotropy is incompatible with a pure proton composition in this scenario. With a more accurate treatment of energy losses, it should be possible to further constrain the cosmic-ray composition and properties of the extragalactic magnetic field, self-consistently improve the GMF model, and potentially expose individual UHECR sources., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

The atmospheric depth of the air shower maximum $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ is an observable commonly used for the determination of the nuclear mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Direct measurements of $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ are performed using observations of the longitudinal shower development with fluorescence telescopes. At the same time, several methods have been proposed for an indirect estimation of $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ from the characteristics of the shower particles registered with surface detector arrays. In this paper, we present a deep neural network (DNN) for the estimation of $X_{\mathrm{max}}$. The reconstruction relies on the signals induced by shower particles in the ground based water-Cherenkov detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The network architecture features recurrent long short-term memory layers to process the temporal structure of signals and hexagonal convolutions to exploit the symmetry of the surface detector array. We evaluate the performance of the network using air showers simulated with three different hadronic interaction models. Thereafter, we account for long-term detector effects and calibrate the reconstructed $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ using fluorescence measurements. Finally, we show that the event-by-event resolution in the reconstruction of the shower maximum improves with increasing shower energy and reaches less than $25~\mathrm{g/cm^{2}}$ at energies above $2\times 10^{19}~\mathrm{eV}$., Comment: Published version, 29 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Obtaining the ability to make informed decisions regarding the operation and maintenance of structures, provides a major incentive for the implementation of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) is an established methodology that allows engineers to make risk-informed decisions regarding the design and operation of safety-critical and high-value assets in industries such as nuclear and aerospace. The current paper aims to formulate a risk-based decision framework for structural health monitoring that combines elements of PRA with the existing SHM paradigm. As an apt tool for reasoning and decision-making under uncertainty, probabilistic graphical models serve as the foundation of the framework. The framework involves modelling failure modes of structures as Bayesian network representations of fault trees and then assigning costs or utilities to the failure events. The fault trees allow for information to pass from probabilistic classifiers to influence diagram representations of decision processes whilst also providing nodes within the graphical model that may be queried to obtain marginal probability distributions over local damage states within a structure. Optimal courses of action for structures are selected by determining the strategies that maximise expected utility. The risk-based framework is demonstrated on a realistic truss-like structure and supported by experimental data. Finally, a discussion of the risk-based approach is made and further challenges pertaining to decision-making processes in the context of SHM are identified.

Abstract

BackgroundThe risk of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) varies significantly among persons of similar age and is higher in males. Age-independent, sex-biased differences in susceptibility to severe COVID-19 may be ascribable to deficits in a sexually dimorphic protective attribute that we termed immunologic resilience (IR).ObjectiveWe sought to examine whether deficits in IR that antedate or are induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection independently predict COVID-19 mortality.MethodsIR levels were quantified with 2 novel metrics: immune health grades (IHG-I [best] to IHG-IV) to gauge CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell count equilibrium, and blood gene expression signatures. IR metrics were examined in a prospective COVID-19 cohort (n = 522); primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Associations of IR metrics with outcomes in non-COVID-19 cohorts (n = 13,461) provided the framework for linking pre-COVID-19 IR status to IR during COVID-19, as well as to COVID-19 outcomes.ResultsIHG-I, tracking high-grade equilibrium between CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell counts, was the most common grade (73%) among healthy adults, particularly in females. SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with underrepresentation of IHG-I (21%) versus overrepresentation (77%) of IHG-II or IHG-IV, especially in males versus females (P < .01). Presentation with IHG-I was associated with 88% lower mortality, after controlling for age and sex; reduced risk of hospitalization and respiratory failure; lower plasma IL-6 levels; rapid clearance of nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 burden; and gene expression signatures correlating with survival that signify immunocompetence and controlled inflammation. In non-COVID-19 cohorts, IR-preserving metrics were associated with resistance to progressive influenza or HIV infection, as well as lower 9-year mortality in the Framingham Heart Study, especially in females.ConclusionsPreservation of immunocompetence with controlled inflammation during antigenic challenges is a hallmark of IR and associates with longevity and AIDS resistance. Independent of age, a male-biased proclivity to degrade IR before and/or during SARS-CoV-2 infection predisposes to severe COVID-19.

Abstract

Experimental data about gene functions curated from the primary literature have enormous value for research scientists in understanding biology. Using the Gene Ontology (GO), manual curation by experts has provided an important resource for studying gene function, especially within model organisms. Unprecedented expansion of the scientific literature and validation of the predicted proteins have increased both data value and the challenges of keeping pace. Capturing literature-based functional annotations is limited by the ability of biocurators to handle the massive and rapidly growing scientific literature. Within the community-oriented wiki framework for GO annotation called the Gene Ontology Normal Usage Tracking System (GONUTS), we describe an approach to expand biocuration through crowdsourcing with undergraduates. This multiplies the number of high-quality annotations in international databases, enriches our coverage of the literature on normal gene function, and pushes the field in new directions. From an intercollegiate competition judged by experienced biocurators, Community Assessment of Community Annotation with Ontologies (CACAO), we have contributed nearly 5,000 literature-based annotations. Many of those annotations are to organisms not currently well-represented within GO. Over a 10-year history, our community contributors have spurred changes to the ontology not traditionally covered by professional biocurators. The CACAO principle of relying on community members to participate in and shape the future of biocuration in GO is a powerful and scalable model used to promote the scientific enterprise. It also provides undergraduate students with a unique and enriching introduction to critical reading of primary literature and acquisition of marketable skills.

Abstract

While children have experienced less severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after SARS-CoV-2 infection than adults, the cause of this remains unclear. The objective of this study was to describe the humoral immune response to COVID-19 in child vs. adult household contacts, and to identify predictors of the response over time. In this prospective cohort study, children with a positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test (index case) were recruited along with their adult household contacts. Serum IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 S1/S2 spike proteins were compared between children and adults at 6 and 12 months after infection. A total of 91 participants (37 adults and 54 children) from 36 families were enrolled. Overall, 78 (85.7%) participants were seropositive for anti-S1/S2 IgG antibody at 6 months following infection; this was higher in children than in adults (92.6% vs. 75.7%) (p = 0.05). Significant predictors of a lack of SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity were age ≥ 25 vs. < 12 years (odds ratio [OR] = 0.23, p = 0.04), presence of comorbidities (vs. none, adjusted OR = 0.23, p = 0.03), and immunosuppression (vs. immunocompetent, adjusted OR = 0.17, p = 0.02).

173. Evaluation of a Novel Enteral Phosphorus Therapy with Enteral Nutrition during a National Intravenous Sodium Phosphate Shortage

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intragastric administration of small volumes of sodium enema solution containing phosphorus as phosphorus replacement therapy in critically ill patients with traumatic injuries who required continuous enteral nutrition. Adult patients (>17 years of age) who had a serum phosphorus concentration 1.4 mg/dL (124 µmol/L) were excluded. Patients were given 20 mL of saline enema solution intragastrically, containing 34 mmol of phosphorus and mixed in 240 mL water. A total of 55% and 73% of patients who received one (n = 22) or two doses (n = 11) had an improvement in the serum phosphorus concentration, respectively. The serum phosphorus concentration increased from 2.5 [2.1, 2.8] mg/dL (0.81 [0.69, 0.90] mmol/L) to 2.9 [2.2, 3.0] mg/dL (0.94 [0.71, 0.97 mmol/L) for those who received two doses (p = 0.222). Excluding two patients with a marked decline in serum phosphorus by 1.3 mg/dL (0.32 mmol/L) resulted in an increase in the serum phosphorus concentration from 2.3 [2.0, 2.8] mg/dL (0.74 [0.65, 0.90] mmol/L) to 2.9 [2.5, 3.2] mg/dL (0.94 [0.81, 1.03] mmol/L; n = 9; p = 0.012). No significant adverse effects were noted. Our data indicated that intragastric phosphate administration using a small volume of saline enema solution improved the serum phosphorus concentrations in most patients.

174. Resonant Scattering between Dark Matter and Baryons: Revised Direct Detection and CMB Limits

Abstract

Traditional dark matter models, eg. WIMPs, assume dark matter is weakly coupled to the standard model so that elastic scattering between dark matter and baryons can be described perturbatively by Born approximation. Most direct detection experiments are analyzed according to that assumption. We show that when the fundamental DM-baryon interaction is attractive, dark matter-nucleus scattering is non-perturbative in much of the relevant parameter range. The cross section exhibits rich resonant behavior with a highly non-trivial dependence on atomic mass; furthermore, the extended rather than point-like nature of nuclei significantly impacts the cross sections. The repulsive case also requires full numerical calculation. These non-perturbative effects change existing constraints. Near a resonance value of the parameters, the cross section has non-trivial velocity dependence rather than the usual $\sigma \sim v^0$; we take the velocity dependence into account. (However doing so has little impact on current constraints.) We report the corrected exclusion regions superseding previous limits from XQC, CRESST Surface Run, CMB power spectrum and extensions with Lyman-$\alpha$ and Milky Way satellites, and Milky Way gas clouds. Some limits become weaker than previous bounds in the literature, while others become stronger. Gaps which open by correct treatment of some particular constraint can sometimes be closed using a different constraint. We also discuss the dependence on mediator mass and give approximate expressions for the velocity dependence near a resonance. Sexaquark ($uuddss$) DM with mass around 2 GeV, which exchanges QCD mesons with baryons, remains unconstrained for most of the parameter space of interest. Abstract

To obtain direct measurements of the muon content of extensive air showers with energy above $10^{16.5}$ eV, the Pierre Auger Observatory is currently being equipped with an underground muon detector (UMD), consisting of 219 10 $\mathrm{m^2}$-modules, each segmented into 64 scintillators coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). Direct access to the shower muon content allows for the study of both of the composition of primary cosmic rays and of high-energy hadronic interactions in the forward direction. As the muon density can vary between tens of muons per m$^2$ close to the intersection of the shower axis with the ground to much less than one per m$^2$ when far away, the necessary broad dynamic range is achieved by the simultaneous implementation of two acquisition modes in the read-out electronics: the binary mode, tuned to count single muons, and the ADC mode, suited to measure a high number of them. In this work, we present the end-to-end calibration of the muon detector modules: first, the SiPMs are calibrated by means of the binary channel, and then, the ADC channel is calibrated using atmospheric muons, detected in parallel to the shower data acquisition. The laboratory and field measurements performed to develop the implementation of the full calibration chain of both binary and ADC channels are presented and discussed. Abstract

We present a summary of the recent results obtained with the novel hadron resonance gas model with the multicomponent hard-core repulsion which is extended to describe the mixtures of hadrons and light (anti-, hyper-)nuclei. A very accurate description is obtained for the hadronic and the light nuclei data measured by STAR at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$ GeV and by ALICE at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =2.76$ TeV. The most striking result discussed here is that for the most probable chemical freeze-out scenario for the STAR energy the found parameters allow us to reproduce the values of the experimental ratios $S_3$ and $\overline{S}_3$ without fitting., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

AMIGA (Auger Muons and Infill for the Ground Array) is an upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory to complement the study of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) by measuring the muon content of extensive air showers (EAS). It consists of an array of 61 water Cherenkov detectors on a denser spacing in combination with underground scintillation detectors used for muon density measurement. Each detector is composed of three scintillation modules, with 10 m$^2$ detection area per module, buried at 2.3 m depth, resulting in a total detection area of 30 m$^2$. Silicon photomultiplier sensors (SiPM) measure the amount of scintillation light generated by charged particles traversing the modules. In this paper, the design of the front-end electronics to process the signals of those SiPMs and test results from the laboratory and from the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. Compared to our previous prototype, the new electronics shows a higher performance, higher efficiency and lower power consumption, and it has a new acquisition system with increased dynamic range that allows measurements closer to the shower core. The new acquisition system is based on the measurement of the total charge signal that the muonic component of the cosmic ray shower generates in the detector., Comment: 40 pages, 33 figures

Abstract

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is vital to form various chiral spin textures, novel behaviors of magnons and permits their potential applications in energy-efficient spintronic devices. Here, we realize a sizable bulk DMI in a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) 2H-TaS2 by intercalating Fe atoms, which form the chiral supercells with broken spatial inversion symmetry and also act as the source of magnetic orderings. Using a newly developed protonic gate technology, gate-controlled protons intercalation could further change the carrier density and intensely tune DMI via the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida mechanism. The resultant giant topological Hall resistivity of 1.4 uohm.cm at -5.2V (about 460% of the zero-bias value) is larger than most of the known magnetic materials. Theoretical analysis indicates that such a large topological Hall effect originates from the two-dimensional Bloch-type chiral spin textures stabilized by DMI, while the large anomalous Hall effect comes from the gapped Dirac nodal lines by spin-orbit interaction. Dual-intercalation in 2HTaS2 provides a model system to reveal the nature of DMI in the large family of TMDs and a promising way of gate tuning of DMI, which further enables an electrical control of the chiral spin textures and related electromagnetic phenomena., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Results of a search for ultra-high-energy neutrinos with the Pierre Auger Observatory from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 are presented. They were obtained as part of the follow-up that stemmed from the detection of high-energy neutrinos and gamma rays with IceCube, \textit{Fermi}-LAT, MAGIC, and other detectors of electromagnetic radiation in several bands. The Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos in the energy range from 100 PeV to 100 EeV and in the zenith angle range from $\theta=60^\circ$ to $\theta=95^\circ$, where the zenith angle is measured from the vertical direction. No neutrinos from the direction of TXS 0506+056 have been found. The results were analyzed in three periods: One of 6 months around the detection of IceCube-170922A, coinciding with a flare period of TXS 0506+056, a second one of 110 days during which the IceCube collaboration found an excess of 13 neutrinos from a direction compatible with TXS 0506+056, and a third one from 2004 January 1 up to 2018 August 31, over which the Pierre Auger Observatory has been taking data. The sensitivity of the Observatory is addressed for different spectral indices by considering the fluxes that would induce a single expected event during the observation period. For indices compatible with those measured by the IceCube collaboration the expected number of neutrinos at the Observatory is well-below one. Abstract

In this letter, we describe quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ in order to investigate the unique interplay between the magnetic and superconducting sublattices. Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently-developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. These results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuFe\textsubscript{4}As\textsubscript{4} with important implications for future investigations of physical phenomena arising from the interplay between them.

Since the first reports of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-like coronavirus in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, there has been intense interest in understanding how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in the human population. 182. Generalizing Expert Misconception Diagnoses through Common Wrong Answer Embedding

Abstract

Misconceptions have been an important area of study in STEM education towards improving our understanding of learners' construction of knowledge. The advent of largescale tutoring systems has given rise to an abundance of data in the form of learner question-answer logs in which signatures of misconceptions can be mined. In this work, we explore the extent to which collected expert misconception diagnoses can be generalized to held-out questions to add misconception semantics. We attempt this generalization by way of a question-answer neural embedding trained on chronological sequences of learner answers. As part of our study, we collect natural language misconception diagnoses from math educators for a sampling of student answers to questions within four topics on Khan Academy. Drawing inspiration from machine translation, we use a multinomial logistic regression model to explore how well the expert misconception semantics, in the form of bag-of-words vectors, can be mapped onto the learned embedding space and interpolated. We evaluate the ability of the space to generalize expert diagnoses using three levels of cross-fold validation in which we measure the recall of predicted natural language diagnoses across rater, topics, and questions. We find that the embedding provides generalization performance substantially beyond baseline approaches. [For the full proceedings, see ED599096.]

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the operationalisation of non-COVID-19 clinical trials globally, particularly site and participant recruitment and trial success/stoppage. Trials which anticipate recruitment challenges may embed methods such as the QuinteT Recruitment Intervention (QRI) to help identify and understand the sources of challenges. Such interventions can help shed light on pandemic-related challenges. This paper reports our experience of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on conducting clinical trials with an embedded QRI, highlighting how the QRI aided in identifying challenges and potential solutions, particularly related to the site set-up and participant recruitment. Main body We report on 13 UK clinical trials which included a QRI. Information is from QRI data and researchers’ experience and reflections. In most trials, recruitment was lower than even the lowest anticipated rates. The flexibility of the QRI facilitated rapid data collection to understand and document, and in some instances respond to, operational challenges. Challenges were mostly logistical, pandemic-related and beyond the control of the site or central trial teams. Specifically: disrupted and variable site opening timelines —often due to local research and development (R&D) delays— shortages of staff to recruit patients; fewer eligible patients or limited access to patients; and intervention-related factors. Almost all trials were affected by pandemic-related staffing issues including redeployment, prioritisation of COVID-19 care and research, and COVID-19-related staff illness and absence. Trials of elective procedures were particularly impacted by the pandemic, which caused changes to care/recruitment pathways, deprioritisation of services, reduced clinical and surgical capacity and longer waiting lists. Attempted solutions included extra engagement with staff and R&D departments, trial protocol changes (primarily moving online) and seeking additional resourcing. Conclusion We have highlighted wide-ranging, extensive and consistent pandemic-related challenges faced by UK clinical trials, which the QRI helped to identify and, in some cases, address. Many challenges were insurmountable at individual trials or trials unit level. This overview highlights the need to streamline trial regulatory processes, address staffing crises, improve recognition of NHS research staff and for clearer, more nuanced central guidance on the prioritisation of studies and how to deal with the backlog. Pre-emptively embedding qualitative work and stakeholder consultation into trials with anticipated difficulties, moving some processes online, and flexible trial protocols may improve the resilience of trials in the current challenging context.

The OS impact of maintenance for the 1L PBT–treated population is unknown since it was not measured from 1L initiation, nor can it be benchmarked with other 1L therapies. To characterize the OS impact of maintenance avelumab, we used an oncology simulation model to estimate the OS of maintenance-eligible and -ineligible patients with aUC from 1L PBT initiation.Methods: We developed a simulated cohort of 1L PBT–treated patients with aUC, including those who did and did not receive maintenance avelumab. Eligibility was assessed at 5.6 months post 1L PBT initiation based on the JAVELIN trial design. Among the 1L-treated population, 58% (95% credible interval [CrI] 49– 67%) were projected to be eligible (calculated from contemporary phase 3 trials); of those, 85% were assumed to receive maintenance. The model estimated median OS (mOS) among a maintenance-ineligible simulated cohort which when combined with the maintenance-eligible cohort yielded an estimated OS in the overall maintenance- intended population from 1L PBT initiation.Results: Approximately half of the modeled 1L PBT–treated population received maintenance. Estimated mOS was 10.1 months (95% CrI 7.5– 13.5) for the maintenance-ineligible cohort, 29.3 months (95% CrI 24.8– 33.9) for the maintenance-eligible, received maintenance cohort, and 15.9 months (95% CrI 13.2– 19.1) in the overall maintenance-intended, 1L PBT–treated population, including those eligible and ineligible for maintenance.Conclusion: The model shows that maintenance avelumab has a modest impact on OS in the overall 1L PBT–treated population of patients with aUC. Abstract

Aims: To identify variables independently associated with same-day discharge (SDD) of patients following revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) and to develop machine learning algorithms to predict suitable candidates for outpatient rTKA. Methods: Data were obtained from the American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Programme (ACS-NSQIP) database from the years 2018 to 2020. Patients with elective, unilateral rTKA procedures and a total hospital length of stay between zero and four days were included. Demographic, preoperative, and intraoperative variables were analyzed. A multivariable logistic regression (MLR) model and various machine learning techniques were compared using area under the curve (AUC), calibration, and decision curve analysis. Important and significant variables were identified from the models. Results: Of the 5,600 patients included in this study, 342 (6.1%) underwent SDD. The random forest (RF) model performed the best overall, with an internally validated AUC of 0.810. The ten crucial factors favoring SDD in the RF model include operating time, anaesthesia type, age, BMI, American Society of Anesthesiologists grade, race, history of diabetes, rTKA type, sex, and smoking status. Eight of these variables were also found to be significant in the MLR model. Conclusion: The RF model displayed excellent accuracy and identified clinically important variables for determining candidates for SDD following rTKA. Machine learning techniques such as RF will allow clinicians to accurately risk-stratify their patients preoperatively, in order to optimize resources and improve patient outcomes. Abstract

Abstract Over 15% of probands in a large cohort of more than 1500 inherited retinal degeneration patients present with a clinical diagnosis of Stargardt disease (STGD1), a recessive form of macular dystrophy caused by biallelic variants in the ABCA4 gene. Participants were clinically examined and underwent either target capture sequencing of the exons and some pathogenic intronic regions of ABCA4, sequencing of the entire ABCA4 gene or whole genome sequencing. ABCA4 c.4539 + 2028C > T, p.[= ,Arg1514Leufs*36] is a pathogenic deep intronic variant that results in a retina-specific 345-nucleotide pseudoexon inclusion. Through analysis of the Irish STGD1 cohort, 25 individuals across 18 pedigrees harbour ABCA4 c.4539 + 2028C > T and another pathogenic variant. This includes, to the best of our knowledge, the only two homozygous patients identified to date. This provides important evidence of variant pathogenicity for this deep intronic variant, highlighting the value of homozygotes for variant interpretation. 15 other heterozygous incidents of this variant in patients have been reported globally, indicating significant enrichment in the Irish population. We provide detailed genetic and clinical characterization of these patients, illustrating that ABCA4 c.4539 + 2028C > T is a variant of mild to intermediate severity. These results have important implications for unresolved STGD1 patients globally with approximately 10% of the population in some western countries claiming Irish heritage. This study exemplifies that detection and characterization of founder variants is a diagnostic imperative.

Abstract

Armed conflict has a damaging effect on the lives of children and young people and affects their school education and future possibilities. This creates a serious challenge to the exercise of the human right for education and the achievement of a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – notably SDG 4, education for all, and SDG 5, gender equality. This paper examines the effects of armed conflict by discussing school closures, or partial closures, internal and external displacement, child soldiers, the six grave violations and the education of girls during armed conflict. The paper concludes with a discussion that argues that the policy of protection promoted by the United Nations is one that should be supported but there are other dimensions that also have to be considered: a more nuanced conceptualisation of childhood and a greater awareness and understanding of the child’s lived experience and agency, the protection of children to be ensured in ceasefire and peace agreements and implementation of strategies to protect children from the effects of war and the enforcement of legal measures and political sanctions that can be used to hold to account the perpetrators of the abuse of children in armed conflict.

190. Software compatibility analysis for quantitative measures of [18F]flutemetamol amyloid PET burden in mild cognitive impairment

Abstract

Abstract Rationale Amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology is one of the earliest detectable brain changes in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. In clinical practice, trained readers will visually categorise positron emission tomography (PET) scans as either Aβ positive or negative. However, adjunct quantitative analysis is becoming more widely available, where regulatory approved software can currently generate metrics such as standardised uptake value ratios (SUVr) and individual Z-scores. Therefore, it is of direct value to the imaging community to assess the compatibility of commercially available software packages. In this collaborative project, the compatibility of amyloid PET quantification was investigated across four regulatory approved software packages. In doing so, the intention is to increase visibility and understanding of clinically relevant quantitative methods. Methods Composite SUVr using the pons as the reference region was generated from [18F]flutemetamol (GE Healthcare) PET in a retrospective cohort of 80 amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients (40 each male/female; mean age = 73 years, SD = 8.52). Based on previous autopsy validation work, an Aβ positivity threshold of ≥ 0.6 SUVrpons was applied. Quantitative results from MIM Software’s MIMneuro, Syntermed’s NeuroQ, Hermes Medical Solutions’ BRASS and GE Healthcare’s CortexID were analysed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), percentage agreement around the Aβ positivity threshold and kappa scores. Results Using an Aβ positivity threshold of ≥ 0.6 SUVrpons, 95% agreement was achieved across the four software packages. Two patients were narrowly classed as Aβ negative by one software package but positive by the others, and two patients vice versa. All kappa scores around the same Aβ positivity threshold, both combined (Fleiss’) and individual software pairings (Cohen’s), were ≥ 0.9 signifying “almost perfect” inter-rater reliability. Excellent reliability was found between composite SUVr measurements for all four software packages, with an average measure ICC of 0.97 and 95% confidence interval of 0.957–0.979. Correlation coefficient analysis between the two software packages reporting composite z-scores was strong (r 2 = 0.98). Conclusion Using an optimised cortical mask, regulatory approved software packages provided highly correlated and reliable quantification of [18F]flutemetamol amyloid PET with a ≥ 0.6 SUVrpons positivity threshold. In particular, this work could be of interest to physicians performing routine clinical imaging rather than researchers performing more bespoke image analysis. Abstract

Abstract Following primary SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, whether boosters or breakthrough infections provide greater protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection is incompletely understood. Here we investigated SARS-CoV-2 antibody correlates of protection against new Omicron BA.4/5 (re-)infections and anti-spike IgG antibody trajectories after a third/booster vaccination or breakthrough infection following second vaccination in 154,149 adults ≥18 y from the United Kingdom general population. Higher antibody levels were associated with increased protection against Omicron BA.4/5 infection and breakthrough infections were associated with higher levels of protection at any given antibody level than boosters. Breakthrough infections generated similar antibody levels to boosters, and the subsequent antibody declines were slightly slower than after boosters. Together our findings show breakthrough infection provides longer-lasting protection against further infections than booster vaccinations. Our findings, considered alongside the risks of severe infection and long-term consequences of infection, have important implications for vaccine policy.

Abstract

1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ is host to coexisting strongly-correlated phases including charge density waves (CDWs) and an unusual Mott transition at low temperature. Here, we investigate coherent phonon oscillations in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ using a combination of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) and time-resolved reflectivity (TRR). Perturbation by a femtosecond laser pulse triggers a modulation of the valence band binding energy at the $\Gamma$-point, related to the Mott gap, that is consistent with the in-plane CDW amplitude mode frequency. By contrast, TRR measurements show a modulation of the differential reflectivity comprised of multiple frequencies belonging to the distorted CDW lattice modes. Comparison of the temperature dependence of coherent and spontaneous phonons across the CDW transition shows that the amplitude mode intensity is more easily suppressed during perturbation of the CDW state by the optical excitation compared to other modes. Abstract

We report the crystal structures and magnetic properties of two psuedo-polymorphs of the $S=1/2$ Ti$^{3+}$ coordination framework, KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O. Single-crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction measurements on $\alpha$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O confirm its structure in the tetragonal $I4/mcm$ space group with a square planar arrangement of Ti$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetometry and specific heat measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions, with $J_1\approx7$ K and $J_2/J_1=0.11$ indicating a slight frustration of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Below $1.8$ K, $\alpha$ undergoes a transition to G-type antiferromagnetic order with magnetic moments aligned along the $c$ axis of the tetragonal structure. The estimated ordered moment of Ti$^{3+}$ in $\alpha$ is suppressed from its spin-only value to $0.62(3)~\mu_B$, thus verifying the two-dimensional nature of the magnetic interactions within the system. $\beta$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O, on the other hand, realises a three-dimensional diamond-like magnetic network of Ti$^{3+}$ moments within a hexagonal $P6_222$ structure. An antiferromagnetic exchange coupling of $J\approx54$ K -- an order of magnitude larger than in $\alpha$ -- is extracted from magnetometry and specific heat data. $\beta$ undergoes N\'eel ordering at $T_N=28$ K, with the magnetic moments aligned within the $ab$ plane and a slightly reduced ordered moment of $0.79~\mu_B$ per Ti$^{3+}$. Through density-functional theory calculations, we address the origin of the large difference in the exchange parameters between the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ psuedo-polymorphs. Given their observed magnetic behaviors, we propose $\alpha$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$xH$_2$O and $\beta$-KTi(C$_2$O$_4$)$_2\cdot$2H$_2$O as close to ideal model $S=1/2$ Heisenberg square and diamond lattice antiferromagnets, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report a measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic rays for energies above $2.5 {\times} 10^{18}~$eV based on 215,030 events recorded with zenith angles below $60^\circ$. A key feature of the work is that the estimates of the energies are independent of assumptions about the unknown hadronic physics or of the primary mass composition. The measurement is the most precise made hitherto with the accumulated exposure being so large that the measurements of the flux are dominated by systematic uncertainties except at energies above $5 {\times} 10^{19}~$eV. The principal conclusions are: (1) The flattening of the spectrum near $5 {\times} 10^{18}~$eV, the so-called "ankle", is confirmed. (2) The steepening of the spectrum at around $5 {\times} 10^{19}~$eV is confirmed. (3) A new feature has been identified in the spectrum: in the region above the ankle the spectral index $\gamma$ of the particle flux ($\propto E^{-\gamma}$) changes from $2.51 \pm 0.03~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.05~{\rm (sys.)}$ to $3.05 \pm 0.05~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.10~{\rm (sys.)}$ before changing sharply to $5.1 \pm 0.3~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.1~{\rm (sys.)}$ above $5 {\times} 10^{19}~$eV. (4) No evidence for any dependence of the spectrum on declination has been found other than a mild excess from the Southern Hemisphere that is consistent with the anisotropy observed above $8 {\times} 10^{18}~$eV., Comment: Published version; 16 figures, 6 table

Abstract

These features of the spectrum can be reproduced in models with energy-dependent mass composition. Abstract

The weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets has confined their application to two dimensional (2D) spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the interlayer coupling in a vdW magnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) can be largely modulated by a protonic gate.With the increase of the protons intercalated among vdW layers,interlayer magnetic coupling increases.Because of the existence of antiferromagnetic layers in FGT nanoflakes, the increasing interlayer magnetic coupling induces exchange bias in protonated FGT nanoflakes. Most strikingly, a rarely seen zero-field cooled (ZFC) exchange bias with very large values (maximally up to 1.2 kOe) has been observed when higher positive voltages (Vg>4.36 V) are applied to the protonic gate, which clearly demonstrates that a strong interlayer coupling is realized by proton intercalation. Abstract

We report on the possibility that the Dark Matter particle is a stable, neutral, as-yet-undiscovered hadron in the standard model. The existence of a compact color-flavor-spin singlet sexaquark (S, uuddss) with mass ~2m_p, is compatible with current knowledge. The S interacts with baryons primarily via a Yukawa interaction of coupling strength alpha_SN, mediated by omega and phi vector mesons having mass ~1 GeV. If it exists, the S is a very attractive DM candidate. The relic abundance of S Dark Matter (SDM) is established when the Universe transitions from the quark-gluon plasma to the hadronic phase at ~150 MeV and is in remarkable agreement with the observed Omega_DM/Omega_b = 5.3+-0.1; this is a no-free-parameters result because the relevant parameters are known from QCD. Survival of this relic abundance to low temperature requires the breakup amplitude gtilde <~ 2 10^-6, comfortably compatible with theory expectations and observational bounds because the breakup amplitude is dynamically suppressed and many orders of magnitude smaller, as we show. The scattering cross section can differ by orders of magnitude from Born approximation, depending on alpha_SN, requiring reanalysis of observational limits. We use direct detection experiments and cosmological constraints to determine the allowed region of alpha_SN. For a range of allowed values, we predict exotic nuclear isotopes at a detectable level with mass offset ~2 amu. The most promising approaches for detecting the sexaquark in accelerator experiments are to search for a long-interaction-length neutral particle component in the central region of relativistic heavy ion collisions or using a beam-dump setup, and to search for evidence of missing particle production characterized by unbalanced baryon number and strangeness using Belle-II or possibly GLUEX at J-Lab., Comment: 25 pp, 13 figs. abstract abbreviated here; FIGURE 2 has been replaced (plotting bug) -- other content is correct and unchanged

Abstract

Cosmic rays arriving at Earth collide with the upper parts of the atmosphere, thereby inducing extensive air showers. When secondary particles from the cascade arrive at the ground, they are measured by surface detector arrays. We describe the methods applied to the measurements of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory to reconstruct events with zenith angles less than $60^\circ$ using the timing and signal information recorded using the water-Cherenkov detector stations. Abstract

Extensive air showers, originating from ultra-high energy cosmic rays, have been successfully measured through the use of arrays of water-Cherenkov detectors (WCDs). Sophisticated analyses exploiting WCD data have made it possible to demonstrate that shower simulations, based on different hadronic-interaction models, cannot reproduce the observed number of muons at the ground. The accurate knowledge of the WCD response to muons is paramount in establishing the exact level of this discrepancy. In this work, we report on a study of the response of a WCD of the Pierre Auger Observatory to atmospheric muons performed with a hodoscope made of resistive plate chambers (RPCs), enabling us to select and reconstruct nearly 600 thousand single muon trajectories with zenith angles ranging from 0$^\circ$ to 55$^\circ$. Comparison of distributions of key observables between the hodoscope data and the predictions of dedicated simulations allows us to demonstrate the accuracy of the latter at a level of 2%. As the WCD calibration is based on its response to atmospheric muons, the hodoscope data are also exploited to show the long-term stability of the procedure., Comment: Published version, 25 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Cosmic neutrinos provide a unique window into the otherwise-hidden mechanism of particle acceleration in astrophysical objects. A flux of high-energy neutrinos was discovered in 2013, and the IceCube Collaboration recently reported the likely association of one high-energy neutrino with a flare from the relativistic jet of an active galaxy pointed towards the Earth. However a combined analysis of many similar active galaxies revealed no excess from the broader population, leaving the vast majority of the cosmic neutrino flux unexplained. Here we present the likely association of a radio-emitting tidal disruption event, AT2019dsg, with a second high-energy neutrino. AT2019dsg was identified as part of our systematic search for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with the Zwicky Transient Facility. The probability of finding any coincident radio-emitting tidal disruption event by chance is 0.5%, while the probability of finding one as bright in bolometric energy flux as AT2019dsg is 0.2%. Our electromagnetic observations can be explained through a multi-zone model, with radio analysis revealing a central engine, embedded in a UV photosphere, that powers an extended synchrotron-emitting outflow. This provides an ideal site for PeV neutrino production. Assuming that the association is genuine, our observations suggest that tidal disruption events with mildly-relativistic outflows contribute to the cosmic neutrino flux., Comment: Title and text modified during journal review.
