160. Causal Effect of Atrial Fibrillation on Heart Failure Risk in East Asian Ancestry: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study Using Genome-wide Association Data.

Abstract

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are prevalent cardiovascular conditions in East Asia, with a complex interrelationship. The directionality of the causal impact of AF on HF risk remains uncertain. This study employs Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the potential causal effect of AF on HF. Methods: Utilizing summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) within the Medical Research Council Integrative Epidemiology Unit open GWAS database, we analyzed 8180 AF cases and 28 612 controls, alongside 9413 HF cases and 203 040 controls, all of East Asian descent. We conducted MR analysis using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, complemented by various sensitivity analyses, including bidirectional MR to assess causality in the reverse direction. Results: Genetically predicted AF was found to be causally associated with an increased risk of HF in East Asian populations (odds ratio = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.10-1.19, P < .001) as per the IVW method. These findings were consistent across multiple MR methods. Sensitivity analyses revealed no significant heterogeneity or pleiotropy. Notably, bidirectional MR analysis showed no causal effect of HF on the risk of developing AF. Conclusions: The MR analysis supports a unidirectional causal relationship between AF and increased HF risk in East Asian individuals. The absence of a reverse causal effect reinforces the importance of maintaining sinus rhythm to mitigate HF risk. 180. Mechanistic Insights into N2O5-Halide Ions Chemistry at the Air–Water Interface

Abstract

The activation of halogens (X = Cl, Br, I) by N2O5is linked to NOxsources, ozone concentrations, NO3reactivity, and the chemistry of halide-containing aerosol particles. However, a detailed chemical mechanism is still lacking. Herein, we explored the chemistry of the N2O5···X–systems at the air–water interface. Two different reaction pathways were identified for the reaction of N2O5with X–at the air–water interface: the formation of XNO2or XONO, along with NO3–. In the case of the Cl–system, the ClNO2generation pathway is more favorable, while for the Br–and I–systems, the formation of BrONO and IONO is barrierless, making them the predominant products. Furthermore, the mechanisms of formation of X2from XNO2and XONO were also investigated. The high energy barriers of reactions and the high free energies of the products compared to those of the reactants indicate that ClNO2is stable at the air–water interface. Contrary to the widely held belief regarding X2producing from the reaction of XNO2with X–, our calculations demonstrate that BrONO and IONO initially form stable BrONO···Br–and IONO···I–complexes, which then subsequently react with Br–and I–to form Br3–and I3–, respectively. Finally, Br3–and I3–decompose to form Br2and I2.These findings have significant implications for experimental interpretation and offer new insights into halogen cycling in the atmosphere.

187. A New Insight into the Genesis of Graphite Deposits in Madagascar Using U–Pb Zircon Dating and Electron Microprobe Analysis.

Abstract

Madagascar is globally recognized as an important producer of high-quality flaky graphite. However, current research on graphite deposits in Madagascar remains insufficient. Previous studies have linked the genesis of Madagascan graphite deposits to the metamorphism of sedimentary organic matter. Here, we provide a case study of graphite deposits in Madagascar, combining new data from the Ambahita graphite deposit (AMG) in southern Madagascar with data from the Antanisoa graphite deposit (ANG) in central Madagascar and the Vohitasara graphite deposit (VOG) on the east coast of Madagascar. We note that the mineral assemblages of graphite-bearing rocks in the AMG, ANG, and VOG are not typical of metamorphic mineral assemblages but rather the results of filling and metasomatism by mantle-derived fluids that occurred after peak metamorphism. Electron microprobe analysis indicates that the graphite of the AMG, VOG, and ANG is usually associated with phlogopite or Mg-biotite; the phlogopite shares a common genesis with other widespread phlogopite deposits across Madagascar. We reveal that the distribution of graphite deposits in Madagascar is primarily controlled by ductile shear zones between blocks. Ductile shear zones that extend deep into the mantle can provide an ideal migration channel and architecture for the emplacement of mantle-derived fluids. The graphite mineralization formed no earlier than the peak metamorphism (490 Ma) and no later than the intrusion of pegmatite veins (389 ± 5 Ma). The distribution of graphite deposits, graphite orebody morphologies, mineral associations, and geochemical data suggest that the genesis of graphite deposits in Madagascar is linked to mantle-derived fluid filling rather than the metamorphism of sediments, as previously suggested.
