Abstract

This document summarizes the findings of the Accelerator Working Group (AWG) of the International Scoping Study (ISS) of a Future Neutrino Factory and super-beam Facility. The work of the group took place at three plenary meetings along with three workshops, and an oral summary report was presented at the NuFact06 workshop held at UC-Irvine in August, 2006. The goal was to reach consensus on a baseline design for a Neutrino Factory complex. One aspect of this endeavor was to examine critically the advantages and disadvantages of the various Neutrino Factory schemes that have been proposed in recent years., 73 pages, 60 figures

Abstract

HiRadMat (High Radiation to Materials), constructed in 2011, is a facility at CERN designed to provide high‐intensity pulsed beams to an irradiation area where material samples as well as accelerator component assemblies (e.g. vacuum windows, high power beam targets, collimators…) can be tested. The facility uses a 440 GeV proton beam extracted from the CERN SPS with a pulse length of up to 7.2 us, and with a maximum pulse energy of 3.4 MJ (3xE13 proton/pulse). In addition to protons, ion beams with energy of 440 GeV/charge and total pulse energy of 21 kJ can be provided. The beam parameters can be tuned to match the needs of each experiment. HiRadMat is not an irradiation facility where large doses on equipment can be accumulated. It is rather a test area designed to perform single pulse experiments to evaluate the effect of high‐intensity pulsed beams on materials or accelerator component assemblies in a controlled environment. The fa‐ cility is designed for a maximum of 1E16 protons per year, distributed among 10 experiments, each having a total of 1E15 protons or about 100 high intensity pulses. This poster will also demonstrate the possibilities for research using this facility and showing examples of upcoming experiments scheduled for the coming beam period starting in autumn 2014. Beam operation to HiRadMat will resume in autumn 2014, initially with proton beam availability, while in early 2015 Argon ions will also be available.

Abstract

The development of high‐power targets remains a key R&D activity for future facilities presently under study like the Neutrino Factory, Muon Collider or upgraded high‐ power super beams for long‐baseline neutrino experiments. The choice of materials to sustain the beam power ranging up to MW levels is not trivial. Granular solid targets have been proposed and are being studied as a candidate for such high‐power target systems. In the recently commissioned HiRadMat facility at CERN, a feasibility experiment of a tungsten powder target was performed. The experiment was designed to explore for first time the impact of a high‐power proton beam on a static W-powder target in a thimble configuration. The diagnostics of the experiment were based on remote high speed photography as well as on laser‐doppler vibration measurements of the target containers. Results from the experimental findings are presented in this poster.

154. Ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging using gradient pre-equalization and compressed sensing

Abstract

Ultrashort echo time (UTE) imaging is a well-known technique used in medical MRI, however, the implementation of the sequence remains non-trivial. This paper introduces UTE for non-medical applications and outlines a method for the implementation of UTE to enable accurate slice selection and short acquisition times. Slice selection in UTE requires fast, accurate switching of the gradient and r.f. pulses. Here a gradient "pre-equalization" technique is used to optimize the gradient switching and achieve an effective echo time of 10μs. In order to minimize the echo time, k-space is sampled radially. A compressed sensing approach is used to minimize the total acquisition time. Using the corrections for slice selection and acquisition along with novel image reconstruction techniques, UTE is shown to be a viable method to study samples of cork and rubber with a shorter signal lifetime than can typically be measured. Further, the compressed sensing image reconstruction algorithm is shown to provide accurate images of the samples with as little as 12.5% of the full k-space data set, potentially permitting real time imaging of short T2(*) materials.

Abstract

NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is a multi-purpose experimental facility to study hadron production in hadron-proton, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. It recorded the first physics data with hadron beams in 2009 and with ion beams (secondary 7Be beams) in 2011. NA61/SHINE has greatly profited from the long development of the CERN proton and ion sources and the accelerator chain as well as the H2 beamline of the CERN North Area. The latter has recently been modified to also serve as a fragment separator as needed to produce the Be beams for NA61/SHINE. Numerous components of the NA61/SHINE set-up were inherited from its predecessors, in particular, the last one, the NA49 experiment. Important new detectors and upgrades of the legacy equipment were introduced by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration. This paper describes the state of the NA61/SHINE facility - the beams and the detector system - before the CERN Long Shutdown I, which started in March 2013. © CERN 2014 for the benefit of the NA61/SHINE collaboration..

Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different treatment combinations on bupropion recovery as well as time to return of spontaneous circulation.Methods: We conducted an eight group, randomized, experiment to evaluate combinations of epinephrine, vasopressin, and lipids on the restoration of cardiac function in Yorkshire pigs. After tracking the animals' baseline vitals for 10 minutes, we injected the animals with bupropion (35 mg/kg) and initiated a randomized protocol 2 minutes after cardiac arrest.Results: Results demonstrated that animal survival given treatment combinations including epinephrine were statistically superior to any other group (p < 0.001, Fishers' exact test). The odds of survival with use of epinephrine vs. other options were 22:1 (5.47, 88.43). Further, all animals receiving only lipids died. Cox survival analysis with bootstrapped parameter estimates provided evidence that the rapidity of cardiac recovery was maximized with a combination of epinephrine and lipids (p < 0.05).Conclusions: Lipids may require an additional chemical catalyst in order to be effective in cardiac recovery. Due to limited resources and a minimal monitoring in-transit a regional anesthetic was placed for pain control. It has the virtue to respect the known limitations of the PS and SPS synchrotrons at CERN but it falls short of delivering the requested annual rate of anti-neutrinos. We here report on a first analysis on how to increase the rate.

Abstract

The paper presents the changes in the water surface area of Lakes Udzierz and Mątasek located in the headwaters of the catchment of the River Mątawa (tributary of the River Vistula). The assessment of the rate of changes was based on Polish and German topographic maps as well as orthophotomaps. The analysed lakes turned out to be two of the fastest disappearing Polish lakes. In the last century (1910-2010) the water surface area of Lake Udzierz decreased from 148.87 to 69.60 ha and that of Lake Mątasek from 29.5 to 0.64 ha. The average rate of loss of the lake surface area during this period was from 0.53 to 0.98% per annum. Such drastic morphometric changes in the studied lakes are, on the one hand, mainly due to poorly conducted drainage and, on the other hand, the eutrophication of the lake waters intensified by the anthropogenic impact.

Abstract

Infolge der zunehmend guten Erfahrungen mit der Katheterablation zur Behandlung von Vorhofflimmern (VHF) sollte die zurückhaltende Indikationsstellung für die Anwendung dieser Therapie bei Patienten, die an einer Herzinsuffizienz leiden, überdacht werden. Um herauszufinden, ob diese Empfehlungen noch gerechtfertigt sind, wurden in dieser Arbeit die Daten der deutschen "Ablationen-Qualitätsregister" des Institut für Herzinfarktforschung analysiert. Diese Daten wurden aus 50 Kliniken gesammelt, die alle zwischen 2009 und 2010 durchgeführten Ablationen gemeldet haben. Es wurden Daten der Patienten vor der Behandlung, die technischen Daten des Verfahrens, der unmittelbare Erfolg und Komplikationen sowie die langfristige weitere Behandlung und Verbesserungen der gesundheitlichen Bedingungen in einer Follow-up-Befragung mit 2409 Patienten nach Katheterablation bei VHF gesammelt. Diese Studie vergleicht die Wirkungen der Katheterablation bei VHF bei 208 Patienten Herzinsuffizienz mit einer linksventrikuläre Auswurffraktion von ≤ 50% und 2201 Patienten ohne Herzinsuffizienz (EF> 50%). Die Ergebnisse dieses Vergleichs zeigen, dass trotz der technisch komplizierteren Anwendungen in der Gruppe der herzinsuffizienten Patienten die befürchteten höheren Risiken in dieser Gruppe nicht beobachtet werden konnten. Patienten mit einer eingeschränkten Pumpfunktion können ebenso erfolgreich und risikoarm behandelt werden wie Patienten mit normaler Pumpfunktion. Der Gesundheitszustand der Patienten, die Lebensqualität und die körperliche Leistungsfähigkeit konnten über einen längeren Zeitraum wesentlich verbessert werden. Internationale Studien, die die Wirkung der Katheterablation bei VHF bei herzinsuffizienten Patienten beschreiben, haben ähnliche Ergebnisse berichtet. Basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen sollten die empfohlene Beschränkung für die Angabe der Katheterablation überdacht und erweitert werden. Ob diese Ergebnisse unter kontrollierten Bedingungen bestätigt werden, wird derzeit in einer prospektiven randomisierten Studie (CASTLE-AF-Studie) untersucht., Following to the increasingly good experience with the catheter ablation (CA) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) the recommended restrictions for the application of this therapy for patients with heart failure should be reconsidered. In order to find out if these recommendations are still justified this study analyses the data of the German “Ablations- Qualitätsregister” by the “Institut für Herzinfarktforschung”. These data are collected from 50 clinics that reported all CA performed between 2009/2010. The data cover the conditions of the patients before treatment, the technical specifications of the procedure, the immediate success and complications and the long term further treatment and improvements of the health conditions collected in a follow-up interrogation with 2409 patients treated with the CA for AF. This study compares the effects of the CA in 208 patients with AF and further heart failures defined by the ejection fraction (EF ≤ 50%) and 2201 patients without heart failure (EF > 50%). The results of this comparison indicate that in spite of technically more complicated applications in the group of patients with further heart failure the feared higher risks in the group could not be observed. The treatment has been applied in both groups with very similar positive results with a significant improvement in quality of life and physical functioning. The health condition of the patients could be improved substantially over a longer period of time. International studies describing the effect of CA in patients with left ventricular dysfunction have reported similar results. Based on these findings the recommended restriction for the indication of the CA should be reconsidered. Whether these results can be confirmed under controlled conditions is currently investigated in a prospective randomized trial (CASTLE-AF study).

161. A Feasibility Experiment of a W-powder Target in the HiRadMat Facility of CERN

Abstract

Granular solid targets made of fluidized tungsten powder or static pebble bed of tungsten spheres, have been long proposed and are being studied as an alternative configurations towards high-power (>1MW of beam power) target systems, suitable for a future Super Beam or Neutrino Factory. Serving the lack of experimental data on this field, a feasibility experiment was performed in HiRadMat facility of CERN/SPS that tried in a pulse-by-pulse basis to address the effect of the impact of the SPS beam (440GeV/c) on a static tungsten powder target. Online instrumentation such as high-speed photography and Laser - Doppler Vibrometry was employed. Preliminary results show a powder disruption speed of less than 0.5 m/s while the disruption height appears to be scaling proportionally with the beam intensity. Other analysis results will be discussed.

163. Quality control of ATLAS muon chambers

Abstract

ATLAS is a general-purpose experiment for the future Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Its Muon Spectrometer will require ∼ 5500m2 of precision tracking chambers to measure the muon tracks along a spectrometer arm of 5m to 15m length, embedded in a magnetic field of ∼ 0.5T. The precision tracking devices in the Muon System will be high pressure drift tubes (MDTs). Approximately 370,000 MDTs will be assembled into ∼ 1200 drift chambers. The performance of the MDT chambers is very much dependent on the mechanical quality of the chambers. The uniformity and stability of the performance can only be assured providing very high quality control during production. Gas tightness, high-voltage behaviour and dark currents are global parameters which are common to gas detectors. For all chambers, they will be tested immediately after the chamber assembly at every production site. Functional tests, for example radioactive source scans and cosmic-ray runs, will be performed in order to establish detailed performance maps. One major issue of the quality control, the gas tightness, is the topic of this thesis. The gas pressure inside the tubes will be 3 bar, the drift gas will be Ar/CO2 93/7. The high spatial resolution made it necessary to define the maximum allowed leak rate for MDT chambers to 2 ∗ 10−8 bar l s . This is equivalent to a pressure drop of about 1 mbar for MDT chambers within one day at the given working point. Several methods had been considered in the past. This thesis deals with an innovative method. The gas gain and hence the signals are a strong function of the gas density. The test on the gas tightness using the tubes itself as sensitive devices makes it possible to determine the leak rate with a sensitivity better than 10−4 within one day. The principle of this method will be discussed and demonstrated. Also the quality control of single tubes can be realized with it. The method allows easy-to-use series controls with integrated test of other chamber properties.

Abstract

MedAustron is a synchrotron based light-ion beam therapy centre for cancer treatment as well as for clinical and non-clinical research currently in its construction phase. The accelerator design is based on the CERN-PIMMS study and its technical implementation by CNAO. This paper presents a status overview over the whole project detailing the achieved progress of the building construction & technical infrastructure installation in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, as well as of the accelerator development, performed at CERN and partially at PSI. The design and procurement status and future planning of the various accelerator components is elaborated.

Abstract

Background: Apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) is the most significant risk factor known to cause Alzheimer dementia (AD) [1], but also crucial in atherogenesis as pathological correlative of coronary heart disease (CHD) [2]. Therefore, the present investigation aimed at unveiling the role of LDL-apoE isoforms in vascular reactivity, especially in flow-dilatation of human coronaries. Materials and Methods: Isometric tension was measured in segments of human coronary arteries from heart transplantations changing the superfusate flow rate in the sequence 3, 5, 20, 40 and 100 mL/min. The initial tension was 2 g. Krebs solution without (control) and with addition of 100 mg/dL pooled LDL, LDLapoE4/E4 or LDLapoE0/E0 (from an apoE ‘knockout man’) was used as superfusate. Intracellular recordings of membrane potential and determination of cAMP and cGMP concentrations were carried out. Results: Initial tension at 3 mL/min flow (T 3 ): control 1.649 g, pooled LDL 1.739 g, LDLapoE4/E4 1.773 g, LDLapoE0/E0 1.796 g; flow-dependent Δtension (T 100 - T 3 ): control -0.418 g, pooled LDL -0.263 g, LDLapoE4/E4 -0.197 g, LDLapoE0/E0 +0.313 g. Upon a basal flow rate of 3 mL/min, the initial tension showed a graded course both in normal and in deendothelialized preparations: both pooled LDL (+5.5% vs. +4.7%) and LDLapoE4/E4 (+7.5% vs. +5.6%) as well as LDLapoE0/E0 (+8.9% vs. +10.2%) enhanced mechanical force as compared to the controls. Endothelium-denuded segments had basically a higher tone (+5.2%) on grounds of an impaired basal NO release. Latter preparations demonstrated this graded course especially significant during flow-dependent dilatation, which was reversed to constriction by +109.3% under pooled LDL, by +160.1% under LDLapoE4/E4 and by +332.1% under LDLapoE0/E0 compared with the control. Membrane potentials reflected tension: hyperpolarization of the vascular smooth muscle cells preceded relaxation, depolarization preceded contraction. Relating the membrane potential to the corresponding tone revealed a sigmoidal electromechanical coupling curve. For the first time in literature, we report on a chemomechanical coupling curve by correlating the nucleotide concentration with the corresponding tension. Conclusion: LDLapoE4/E4 reversed flow-dependent vasodilatation to constriction and was only exceeded in its deleterious effect by LDL devoid of any apoE. There is growing evidence that binding of apoE4/E4 and apoE0/E0 to the flow sensor proteoheparan sulfate (endothelial syndecan superfamily) leads to nanoplaque build-up [1,2] at the endothelium-blood interface and thus impairs vascular reactivity. Irradiations will be performed using active scanning with a proton or carbon ion pencil beam which is subject to scattering in vacuum windows, beam monitors and air gap. For applications where sharp lateral beam penumbras are required in order to spare critical organs from unwanted dose, scattering should be minimal. A semi-empirical scattering model has been established to evaluate beam size growth at the patient due to upstream scattering. Major design choices for proton gantry and nozzle based on the scattering calculations are presented.

Major beam delivery system contributors to dose heterogeneities are evaluated: beam position, beam size and spot weight errors. Their individual and combined effect on the dose distribution is quantified, using semianalytical models of lateral beam spread in the nozzle and target and depth-dose curves for protons and carbon ions. Deduced requirements on critical parts of the beam delivery system are presented. Preventive and active methods to suppress the impact of beam delivery inaccuracies are proposed.

Abstract

We previously isolated a spontaneous mutant of Escherichia coli K-12, strain MG1655, following passage through the streptomycin-treated mouse intestine, that has colonization traits superior to the wild-type parent strain (M. P. Leatham et al., Infect. Immun. 73: 8039–8049, 2005). This intestine-adapted strain ( E. coli MG1655*) grew faster on several different carbon sources than the wild type and was nonmotile due to deletion of the flhD gene. We now report the results of several high-throughput genomic analysis approaches to further characterize E. coli MG1655*. Whole-genome pyrosequencing did not reveal any changes on its genome, aside from the deletion at the flhDC locus, that could explain the colonization advantage of E. coli MG1655*. Microarray analysis revealed modest yet significant induction of catabolic gene systems across the genome in both E. coli MG1655* and an isogenic flhD mutant constructed in the laboratory. Catabolome analysis with Biolog GN2 microplates revealed an enhanced ability of both E. coli MG1655* and the isogenic flhD mutant to oxidize a variety of carbon sources. The results show that intestine-adapted E. coli MG1655* is more fit than the wild type for intestinal colonization, because loss of FlhD results in elevated expression of genes involved in carbon and energy metabolism, resulting in more efficient carbon source utilization and a higher intestinal population. Hence, mutations that enhance metabolic efficiency confer a colonization advantage.

The formation of heterogeneous structures in biopolymer gels is of current interest for biomedical applications and is of fundamental interest to understanding the molecular level origins of structures generated from disordered solutions by reactions. The cation-mediated physical gelation of alginate by calcium and copper is analyzed using magnetic resonance measurements of spatially resolved molecular dynamics during gel front propagation. Relaxation time and pulse-field gradient methods are applied to determine the impact of ion front motion on molecular translational dynamics. The formation of capillaries in alginate copper gels is correlated to changes in translational dynamics.

Abstract

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20GeV and 180GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale. © 2011 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration, published under license by IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

To stay competitive, firms have to keep up a certain investment expenditure flow, and in addition, have to be in a position to take advantage of unexpected investment opportunities, which come up irregularly. The challenge for today’s CFOs is then to overcome the silo approach of financial institutions, and instead develop a strategic perspective on capital structure management based on maximizing equity value and optimizing reserve borrowing capacities throughout the business cycle. When managing the corporate capital structure, CFOs invariably are confronted with two fundamental questions: First, should they return excess cash to shareholders, save it, or invest it in positive NPV projects, and second, should they finance new growth opportunities by adding debt or drawing on equity? Indeed, achieving the optimal capital structure – the composition of debt and equity that a company uses to finance its operations and strategic investments – has attracted considerable attention from academics and practitioners alike.

Abstract

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. Abstract

The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

The Beta-Beam is a concept of large-scale facility that aims at providing pure electronic neutrino and antineutrino beams for the measurement of $ \nu_{e}^{}$ $ \rightarrow$ $ \nu_{\mu}^{}$ oscillations. Beta-decaying nuclides are produced in large amounts in a facility of the scale of EURISOL, and are then post-accelerated and stored at large $ \gamma$ in a racetrack decay ring. We present here a conceptual design of the accelerator chain of a Beta-Beam based at CERN.

Abstract

The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself.

Abstract

In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

MedAustron is a synchrotron based accelerator facility for cancer treatment in Austria currently in the development phase. The design is based on the PIMMS study* and CNAO** synchrotron. In addition to the clinical application, the accelerator will also provide beams for nonclinical research in the fields of medical radiation physics, radiation biology and experimental physics with an extended proton energy range beyond medical requirements to 800 MeV. The differences to others medical accelerator-based facilities will be elaborated, specifically the used source technologies and configuration (starting up with protons (p) and carbon ions (C⁶⁺) allowing a later upgrade to ion species up to neon) and the online verification of all relevant beam parameters. Abstract

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20 to 350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudorapidity values in the range 0.2-0.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit.

Abstract

Op­er­a­tion of a mer­cury jet de­liv­ery sys­tem is pre­sent­ed. The de­liv­ery sys­tem is part of the Mer­cury In­tense Tar­get (MERIT) Ex­per­i­ment, a proof-of-prin­ci­ple ex­per­i­ment con­duct­ed at CERN in 2007 which demon­strat­ed the fea­si­bil­i­ty of using an un­con­strained jet of mer­cury as a tar­get for a fu­ture Neu­tri­no Fac­to­ry or Muon Col­lid­er. The Hg sys­tem was de­signed to pro­duce a 1-cm-di­am­e­ter, 20 m/s Hg jet in­side a high-field (15 Tesla), 15-cm-bore solenoid mag­net. A high-speed op­ti­cal di­ag­nos­tic sys­tem al­lowed ob­ser­va­tion of the in­ter­ac­tion of the jet with both 14- and 24-GeV pro­ton beams. Per­for­mance of the Hg sys­tem dur­ing the in-beam ex­per­i­ment will be pre­sent­ed.

Abstract

MERIT is a proof‐of‐principle experiment of a target station suitable as source for future muon colliders or neutrino factories. When installed at the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) PS (Proton Synchrotron) complex fast‐extracted high‐intensity proton beams intercepted a free mercury jet inside a normal‐conducting, pulsed 15‐T capture solenoid magnet cooled with liquid nitrogen. Up to 25 MJ of Joule heat was dissipated in the magnet during a pulse. The fully automated, remotely controlled cryogenic system of novel design permitted the transfer of nitrogen by the sole means of differential pressures inside the vessels. This fast cycling system permitted several hundred tests in less than three weeks during the 2007 data taking campaign.

Abstract

The MERIT (MER­cury In­tense Tar­get) ex­per­i­ment was run in the fall of 2007 using 14 and 24 GeV in­tense pro­ton beams from the CERN PS. It is a proof-of-prin­ci­ple ex­per­i­ment de­signed to val­i­date a tar­get con­cept for pro­duc­ing an in­tense muon source for a fu­ture muon col­lid­er or neu­tri­no fac­to­ry. The ex­per­i­ment suc­cess­ful­ly demon­strat­ed a tar­get tech­nique for mul­ti-MW pro­ton beams that uti­lizes a free-flow­ing liq­uid metal jet with­in the con­fines of a high-field solenoid. We de­scribe the ex­per­i­men­tal strat­e­gy and pa­ram­e­ters, as well as the re­sults ob­tained and their im­pli­ca­tions for fu­ture muon-based ac­cel­er­a­tor fa­cil­i­ties.

Abstract

In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

Abstract

We re­port on the anal­y­sis of data col­lect­ed from the op­ti­cal di­ag­nos­tics of the MERIT ex­per­i­ment which was run at CERN in the fall of 2007. The breakup of the free mer­cury jet re­sult­ing from the im­pact of in­tense pro­ton beams from the CERN PS with­in a mag­net­ic field en­vi­ron­ment is de­scribed.

Abstract

The MERIT experiment is a proof-of-principle test of a target system for high power proton beam to be used as front-end for a neutrino factory complex or amuon collider. The experiment took data in autumn 2007 with the fast extracted beam from the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to a maximum intensity of about 30 × 1012 protons per pulse. We report results from the portion of the MERIT experiment in which separated beam pulses were delivered to a free mercury jet target with time intervals between pulses varying from 2 to 700 μs. The analysis is based on the responses of particle detectors placed along side and downstream of the target.

Abstract

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4.

Abstract

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The MERIT(nTOF-11) experiment is a proof-ofprinciple test of a target system for a high power proton beam to be used as front-end for a neutrino factory or a muon collider. The experiment took data in autumn 2007 with the fast-extracted beam from the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to a maximum intensity of $30 × 10^{12}$ per pulse. The target system, based on a free mercury jet, is capable of intercepting a 4-MW proton beam inside a 15-T magnetic field required to capture the low energy secondary pions as the source for intense muon beams. Partice detectors installed around the target setup measure the secondary particle flux out of the target and can probe cavitation effects in the mercury jet when excited by an intense proton beam.Preliminary results of the data analysis will be presented here.

Abstract

The carbon sources that support the growth of pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the mammalian intestine have not previously been investigated. In vivo, the pathogenic E. coli EDL933 grows primarily as single cells dispersed within the mucus layer that overlies the mouse cecal epithelium. We therefore compared the pathogenic strain and the commensal E. coli strain MG1655 modes of metabolism in vitro, using a mixture of the sugars known to be present in cecal mucus, and found that the two strains used the 13 sugars in a similar order and cometabolized as many as 9 sugars at a time. We conducted systematic mutation analyses of E. coli EDL933 and E. coli MG1655 by using lesions in the pathways used for catabolism of 13 mucus-derived sugars and five other compounds for which the corresponding bacterial gene system was induced in the transcriptome of cells grown on cecal mucus. Each of 18 catabolic mutants in both bacterial genetic backgrounds was fed to streptomycin-treated mice, together with the respective wild-type parent strain, and their colonization was monitored by fecal plate counts. None of the mutations corresponding to the five compounds not found in mucosal polysaccharides resulted in colonization defects. Based on the mutations that caused colonization defects, we determined that both E. coli EDL933 and E. coli MG1655 used arabinose, fucose, and N -acetylglucosamine in the intestine. In addition, E. coli EDL933 used galactose, hexuronates, mannose, and ribose, whereas E. coli MG1655 used gluconate and N -acetylneuraminic acid. The colonization defects of six catabolic lesions were found to be additive with E. coli EDL933 but not with E. coli MG1655. The data indicate that pathogenic E. coli EDL933 uses sugars that are not used by commensal E. coli MG1655 to colonize the mouse intestine. The results suggest a strategy whereby invading pathogens gain advantage by simultaneously consuming several sugars that may be available because they are not consumed by the commensal intestinal microbiota.

Abstract

Field management, through the use of specially trained field consultants, is a mechanism by which interdisciplinary interventions can be implemented in non-institutional settings. Management of the real environmental determinants (home, work, social) of pain and disability should improve the effectiveness of behaviorally based interventions and make these treatments more accessible. Over a 6 year period, 261 patients having various chronic somatic complaints (e.g., pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal complaints) underwent interdisciplinary outpatient treatment based on medical and behavioral sciences. Comparison of patients having field management with patients receiving office-based treatment found a significantly greater reduction in disability with field management. 84% of field managed patients had a successful outcome as defined by: (a) return to regular work, or (b) reduced limitations on work, exercise, and daily living activities, depending on functional status at assessment. Only 61% of patients with office-based treatment were successful. Compliance, defined as the frequency with which treatment was mutually terminated, was significantly higher with field management. The availability of long-term disability benefits was highly predictive of a poorer outcome. However, field management remained effective for improving functional status regardless of the availability of benefits. Finally, determination of the cost of non-institutional treatment indicated that field management is a cost-effective modality. Implications of these findings for the treatment of disability in chronic pain and other chronic illness syndromes are discussed.

Abstract

E. coli O157:H7 colonizes the bovine intestine, can contaminate food through fecal shedding, and causes human diarrheal and systemic illnesses. Catabolism of particular carbohydrates by E. coli has been found to be important for intestinal colonization of mice. In this study, we assessed whether catabolism of two mucin-derived carbohydrates are important for E. coli O157:H7 colonization of adult cattle. This was accomplished by competitively co-colonizing streptomycin-treated adult cattle with a wild-type strain of E. coli O157:H7 and isogenic mutants in catabolic pathways for mucin-derived carbohydrates N-acetylgalactosamine or l -fucose. Both mutants colonized poorly compared to the wild-type during the initiation stage of colonization (days 0–6). During the maintenance stage of colonization (days 7–15), the mutant unable to use N-acetylgalactosamine did not show a colonization defect, whereas the strain unable to use fucose had a significant colonization defect. These results support the concept that growth and colonization of E. coli O157:H7 in the bovine rectum has a nutritional basis, with a nutrient preference for l -fucose over N-acetylgalactosamine.

Abstract

Mammals are aerobes that harbor an intestinal ecosystem dominated by large numbers of anaerobic microorganisms. However, the role of oxygen in the intestinal ecosystem is largely unexplored. We used systematic mutational analysis to determine the role of respiratory metabolism in the streptomycin-treated mouse model of intestinal colonization. Here we provide evidence that aerobic respiration is required for commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli to colonize mice. Our results showed that mutants lacking ATP synthase, which is required for all respiratory energy-conserving metabolism, were eliminated by competition with respiratory-competent wild-type strains. Mutants lacking the high-affinity cytochrome bd oxidase, which is used when oxygen tensions are low, also failed to colonize. However, the low-affinity cytochrome bo 3 oxidase, which is used when oxygen tension is high, was found not to be necessary for colonization. Mutants lacking either nitrate reductase or fumarate reductase also had major colonization defects. The results showed that the entire E. coli population was dependent on both microaerobic and anaerobic respiration, consistent with the hypothesis that the E. coli niche is alternately microaerobic and anaerobic, rather than static. The results indicate that success of the facultative anaerobes in the intestine depends on their respiratory flexibility. Despite competition for relatively scarce carbon sources, the energy efficiency provided by respiration may contribute to the widespread distribution (i.e., success) of E. coli strains as commensal inhabitants of the mammalian intestine.

Abstract

In its report, the SPC Review Panel has highlighted that the construction of a 4 MW SPL has to be motivated by the needs of a well-defined and approved physics programme, and that it should be compared with a Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) when considering only the needs of LHC. This report is meant to answer these remarks by describing the version of the SPL that would be built for the needs of LHC alone (the Low Power SPL or LP-SPL) and by making a preliminary comparison with an RCS.
